Happy Monday.

Iowa poll finds Rep. Paul Ryan with the best favorability/unfavorability rating from GOP voters in the early state, 75/10. That's followed by Mike Huckabee (66/17), Rick Santorum (58/21), Rick Perry (55/19), and Chris Christie (51/30).

A new AP/GfK poll finds nearly half of folk with employer-based health insurance coverage believe their plans will change for the worse in the next year, with 4 out of 5 of those citing Obamacare. Also, 69 percent say their premiums will be going up, while 59 percent say annual deductibles or copayments are increasing.

Yesterday, the Yemen parliament banned drone strikes in the country. That'll do the trick.

40 We had January temperatures starting Dec 1.
If January is colder than December, as it usually is, we will see minus twenty to minus thirty degrees (on the 'F' scale)  all of January and perhaps well into February.

The Good News is the Federal reserve might stop printing money in January, just as people lose their jobs, get cut back to half time, and lose their health insurance. At the same time Doctors and Hospitals will be paid less for doing more work.

This is called 'progress'.

This is cool.  A mad Brit created a garden straight out of the Addam's family:

The Poison Garden is part of the larger complex of gardens in the town of Alnwick, Northumberland, England.

There are over 100 plants in the garden, some the kind of poisonous that's okay in any garden – foxglove, for example – and some that required a government permit to grow. The garden is home to Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade), Strychnos nux-vomica (strychnine), Conium maculatum (hemlock), and Ricinus communis (ricin). In addition to the obvious and not-so-obviously poisonous, the garden is also home to the infamously narcotic: coca (from which you get cocaine), poppies (heroin), cannabis, and various magic mushrooms.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Thanks for the morning briefing, Vic.  And prayers for Neets.

I try to stay off the web during the weekend, so I wasnÂ’t ready with a story about the late, great Peter OÂ’Toole (and yes, that really was his name).  I do have an OÂ’Toole story that IÂ’ve told before, but perhaps some of you havenÂ’t heard it:

Sometime in the mid ‘60s, OÂ’Toole and Richard Harris were wandering around London, calling in at every pub along their way.  Long after midnight, they found themselves in a veddy posh part of the city, and both of them realized they knew a delicious bird who lived somewhere in the area.

Eventually, the two boozehounds found the girlÂ’s flat and began throwing pebbles at her window to wake her.  Eventually she did wake up, opened the window and old the two to get lost.  Now nothing daunts a romantic Irishman, so both OÂ’Toole and Harris pleaded, wheedled and begged for her to open her door and heart (not to mention other bodily parts) and let them in.

OÂ’Toole finally decided on a more direct route – he shimmied up the drainpipe clamped to the wall of the building, and within minutes was in the arms of his lady-love.  Harris decided that if it was good enough for OÂ’Toole, then by God, it was good enough for him.  He, too, began climbing up the drainpipe.

But the pipe had seen better days, and as Harris was halfway up, it broke from its clamps and swung out over the road, a cursing Harris clinging on for dear life.

At just that moment, a policeman appeared.  “Officer, arrest that drunken Irishman!” OÂ’Toole shouted.  “HeÂ’s trying to break into our flat!”

And with that, OÂ’Toole slammed the window shut, leaving Harris to cool his heels in a cell until he was bailed out the next morning by a grinning, sexually satisfied OÂ’Toole.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

I was going to say that I installed a new one with great trepidation having heard all the stories.

I think that the crapper makers (some of them) finally made designs that worked with one flush.

I think also that TP makers making the paper smaller helped. (or didn't you realize that?)

It also requires a good waste line, ventilation and good water pressure. (if you're running a weak well, you may have problems)

As far as the incandescent? >> #%&(((%%$$$$# the ones who voted for that shite.

If we had true freedom, and were intelligent, we'd have 'winter' light bulbs (incandescent) and 'summer' light bulbs (cfl). But nanny state knows best. Was it in the best interests to shut down domestic incandescent light bulb makers and lose hundreds of jobs and tens of millions in revenue?

89 I think that the crapper makers (some of them) finally made designs that worked with one flush. Even the cheap house brand Home Depot toilets work well now. This is a somewhat interesting lesson about the limitations of technology. It took so long to get it right because the manufacturers had to get there by physical trial and error. You would think that they could have used computer simulation to model different designs, but the capability was not there for even so small a system as a toilet flush. But somehow those AGW dickheads can tell us where the climate is headed.

90 Here's a question: if the whole point of insurance, traditionally speaking, has been to protect people from bills too high to pay, then will there be some kind of assistance for situations where someone can't pay the $10,000 deductible in order to get that surgery they need? Currently, if you don't have insurance and are stuck with a huge bill, the hospital and docs will generally knock off 50% off the top, and work out some sort of payment method for the rest. But if you're insured and have a $10k deductible to meet before you get any benefits, then how many people can pay that money out of pocket? Especially on top of already paying a similar amount in monthly premiums? Will hospitals and docs be expected to eat that 50%, as well? How long will they remain in business if that's the case?

Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing

Great Catherine [1968]. Virtually unknown in the US, but I gather a perennial on Christmas UK television for some reason.

O'Toole is a tightly-wound British officer sent to the court of Russian empress Catherine the Great, who has to deal with a debauched and ineffectual royal retinue and a naughty Empress who find him -- intriguing.

Zero Mostel steals the movie as a corrupt eye-patch wearing Potemkin, swilling vodka and spouting epigrams.

103 Don't forget pappy bush signed the law that banned high flow showerheads. Something I noticed; I have an outdoor shower-head, fed by about 100 feet of garden hose sitting in the sunshine. If it is slightly overcast the water feels cold. So I unscrew the shower nozzle, letting the water really flow, and it feels about 20 degrees warmer. So by the law of unintended consequences I have to think that atomizing the water flow mixes the water droplets with ambient air and chills the water. So people in turn crank the water temp higher, increasing cost and using more energy.

The contamination by the mercury in cfl isn't really all that bad.

However, as you say, when you have a bunch in one spot, it suddenly becomes a problem.

Trouble with the law they passed is they didn't set any design parameters on what could/would replace them.

So now we have bulbs that are toxic and don't last as long.

Here in Kentucky there is no mandatory recycling of anything outside of Louisville and Lexington.  I cant break the habit and I still sort our stuff and pile it in the truck and make the drive to a recycle center.

123 Story Behind the great Christmas hymns. "Angels From The Realms of Glory" James Montgomery was the son of Missionaries who went to the WestIndies and left their son in a boarding school when he was only 6years old. While his devout parents shared the gospel, their son was shuttled from home to home. He failed at school. He failed as a baker's apprentice. But, he could write poetry. In time,he worked for The Sheffield Register, a newspaper which he later bought out and renamed, The Iris. Because of addressing sensitive political issues in his paper, twice Mr. Montgomery was fined and imprisoned. On Christmas Eve, 1816, at the age of 45, James published his poem, "Angels from the realms of glory," in his paper. The stirring tune, Regent Square came from the pen of the blind musician composer, Henry Smart who was born in 1813 and lived until 1879. The name Regent Square was taken from the most prominent Presbyterian Church in London. Montgomery produced more than 400 hymns, surpassed only by Charles Wesley and Isaac Watts in the number of hymns now in general use throughout Christendom. The hymn: http://tinyurl.com/mcvo63z "The Christmas spirit is that hope which tenaciously clings to the hearts of the faithful and announces in the face of any Herod the world can produce and all the inn doors slammed in our faces and all the dark nights of our souls that with God all things are possible, that even now unto us a Child is born." 149 @131 Other than being 25-30 times more expensive than the bulbs They replace, they work well. Dimmable, right color temperature. The break even point for a led bulb is 5 years. So if it lasts more than 5 years its a "win" if it doesn't you get to go out and buy really expensive government mandated light sources.

152 How do those LED lights measure up? I have a pair of those funky Philips ones that are yellow when off, and I have a couple of the cheaper Cree ones promoted by Home Depot. I have no problem with the quality of the light. The problem is that I have no confidence whatsoever in the estimated lifespan of the devices, so I have no idea whether these will pay back in the near term or be a complete ripoff. All of the lying—acceptable so long as it's for a good cause—has rotted away the trust that is the foundation of civilization.

154 How do those LED lights measure up? I have one in a table lamp. It was expensive as hell, but it comes with a cool little remote. You can vary the color, the intensity, and even make it blink, and a few other tricks. It's life expectancy is probably longer then mine. It's kinda funny to look at the lamp and realize I'll never have to replace that bulb, ever again. There's a place for them, especially in hard to reach locations. Do it once, forget it.

Posted by: Regular Moron at December 16, 2013 08:07 AM (1H61p) The swirly CFLs are palatable in a shower recessed with a cover or an overhead with a frosted globe. I have a Reiker Ceiling Fan/Heater with one in it and it's alright. I have yet to put one in my recessed lights, as they are all dimmered and I fucking refuse anyway. I've lived in my current home for close to 14 years.  I have two hall lights that have good old regular bulbs in them.  They were there when I moved in and I've never replaced them once.  Being hall lights, they are turned on and off all the time.  Regular bulbs, probably cost 50 cents each.  14 years.

189 The CFLs I've kept on have lasted quite a long time. Same experience here. The last owner of this house we bought three years ago installed recessed lighting in the kitchen and the adjoining mud/laundry room. It was a knucklehead move because it's only 7-1/2 feet between floor and ceiling in that part of the house, and it felt like my hair was going to catch fire with incandescents in the fixtures. I bought a multipack of the CFL PAR-30s (65w equivalents) at Costco, but they take too long to warm up, so we leave the kitchen lights (six fixtures) on all the time. The CFLs in the adjoining laundry room (two fixtures) that came out of the same package as four of the kitchen ones were lit only when needed, and those burned out long before any of the kitchen CFLs died. The CFLs in the kitchen all burned out about the same time as each other except for one that lasted about three months longer than the others.

Doubt this is "uninteneded" consequences. This is all part of the wealth redistribution plan. The ACA removed any limits on personal assets from qualifying for Medicaid specifically so that more people would be added the Medicaid. The states are going to be looking for some way to find money to pay for all of these new Medicaid users when the federal subsidies go away in a few years, so they can use the Medicaid Recovery Act to go after peoples estate.

Remember: the Obamacare site *automatically* enrolls people who qualify for Medicaid, whether they want it or not; they are not given the option to purchase a health plan.

233 SC has been trying to get rid of open primaries for decades.  They have sued in federal court, they have sued in State court.  And they have lost every time.  The ruling has been that if the State contributes anything at all to the primary, including polling places and workers, they may dictate the terms of the primary.

Now why the Republicans do not change the law I do not know.  The current law was passed when the Democrats controlled the Statehouse.  And that hasn't been the case for a long time.

The only thing I can figure is that among all these "converted Democrats" they do not want to change the law.

H/T to Insty:

Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., took a more conciliatory tone towards conservative groups who criticized the House budget deal with Democrats during an interview on "Fox News Sunday."

Host Chris Wallace replayed a clip of Republican House Speaker John Boehner's outburst regarding the conservative groups earlier this week and asked Ryan to react.

"Look, I think John got his Irish up there," Ryan said, shrugging off Boehner's comments.

Ryan added that the groups were "part of our conservative family" even though they opposed their budget compromise with Democrats.

"I would prefer to keep these conversations within our family," he said. "John was frustrated because they came out against our agreement before we even reached an agreement. I was frustrated with that as well."

Ryan added that the Tea Party was "indispensable" and "invaluable" to the Republican party and keeping Washington accountable.

Fuck you, weasel.  Go back to sucking Establishment dick.

Plus, it means she and her sister will never "make up".

Rebecca is one of my all time favorite movies.  I've always been very fond of Joan Fontaine.  She's one of my favorite actresses and it always shocked me to read about the lifelong feud between she and her sister.  Two such beautiful, classy women.  It just didn't seem to fit somehow.  But it had apparently lasted nearly their entire lives.  Olivia de Havilland is 97 now.  They sure had some longevity in their genes.

296 131 How do those LED lights measure up?
Posted by: Azenogoth at December 16, 2013 08:04 AM (LJpVo)

I got 2 Cree brand bulbs for my workdesk area overhead light.
They're dimmable, and come in 3 color choices -- cool, warm, daylight. (I got 'warm', which is close to incandescent).

LED's are current (as opposed to voltage) devices, which means that power 'spikes' are unlikely to take them out (unless lightning gets through).  There's an internal circuit that drops "whatever input voltage" is present to charge a capacitor that provides the correct amount of current through the LED.

They were expensive, but so far (2 weeks later), I like the light output a lot better than what I was getting with the incandescents.

I detest CFL bulbs, though.  Wavelength almost makes me depressed.

I used to work in the "photonics" (laser) industry.  When high powered LED's came out several years ago (they were seriously unaffordable), I ran a spectrum analysis of the output.  VERY smooth.  No spikes.

This is by design. The Medicaid Recovery Act has been around since 1993, but it is the ACA that is vastly increasing the medicaid rolls by removing limits on persona; assets when determining eligibility. The Obamacare site is forcing people onto Medicaid if they qualify; they don't have the option of purchasing a plan.

You can buy CFL bulbs in all different "colors" (eg., warm, cool) so unless you buy a color you don't like that characteristic of the bulb shouldn't bother you.

What bothers me with all fluorescent bulbs is they flicker with the wall  current -- 60 Hz. Normally that's not noticeable. But when the refresh rate of my monitor is also set to 60 Hz I get a very noticeable flicker from the combo that drives me nuts. So whenever I use a computer under fluorescent lights I have to set the monitor refresh rate to 70 or the strobe effect drives me buggy.

345 Since we're talking LED bulbs, It's getting time to replace a few bulbs around here (Ever have that feeling, that bulbs are about to go dead?) The whole house was outfitted with CFL's when we moved in, as well as CFL's in some of our table lamps. But frankly, I hate them. The light doesn't seem as bright. If I pick up the Cree LEDs from home depot (geebus that's pricy.) do I want the soft white (Color temp 2700) or the Daylight (Color temp 5000.) Despite the time I spent putting up projectors in college, color temp always escaped me as a concept. I want whatever light is going to look/feel brightest (even if the lumens output in the same.)

346 "I have a pair of those funky Philips ones that are yellow when off, and I have a couple of the cheaper Cree ones promoted by Home Depot." The Philips ones look like bug lights when they're off, but when they're on they have by far the most pleasant light quality to my eyes. That's something that varies with the person; lots of people like the Crees, too (don't go by charts and specs -- your personal taste in light color can't be matched by a spectrum chart). The OP may want to buy one of each and see which one he prefers. The Philips models are a lot cheaper than they were, but they still aren't cheap. They have some serious metal in them for heat sinking, and will likely outlast the lighter-weight cheapies by many times.

I suspect it's programmed into some primitive area of our brain so when we see light that is red, yellow, maybe even green we think of things like fire and warmth. People used to say that they 'got the blues' to let you know they were depressed. Houses of ill repute would be in the 'red light district'. When I used to photograph professionally I used a film that accentuated red and gave a 'positively glowing' appearance to my models. I like my LED which I occasionally turn on full red, and at night I dim to just the lowest red setting, as a night light. I used to have issues with seasonal affective disorder. I don't anymore. It's probably all in my brain.

353 "600 amp residential service? You sure about that? I ain't going to argue with you, but..." It's split into three 200 amp panels. Two of the panels handle lights and outlets, etc. and the third is for the high load items like the three air conditioning compressors, refrig, etc.

354 @ 217

I was pointing out that without the open primaries you don't like, we might never have gotten Reagan.  You think the party bosses wanted Reagan instead of Bush?  The open primary helped to defeat their wishes that year.

And again, as a matter of principle, I AGREE WITH YOU.  But it's worth remembering that things you don't like sometimes lead to results that you love.  You could have gotten all of that from what I said if you weren't so busy spewing your bile all over me.

People like you, who respond to every point you don't like with sarcasm and ridicule (in your case, ineptly) instead of a counterpoint, are rapdily driving this comment section from a must-read to the mental equivalent of a toxic waste dump.  It's like you read what Ace and Drew write, take away the funny and the nasty, and miss the substance and the thought.

355 "Look, I think John got his Irish up there," Ryan said, shrugging off Boehner's comments.

Funny stuff coming from the same Paul Ryan who promised Irish immigration advocates amnesty for their clients at a recent meeting.

What are you running?

A backup center for the NSA?

358 What are you running? A backup center for the NSA? He supplies weed for CAC, is my suspicion. Grow lights take a shitload of power. Or so I've heard.

359 Is there any conservative that actually wants Iowa to be the first contest for the Presidential primary?

In a sick way, it has made Iowa more liberal as every politician has to promise the state government goodies.  Now all the farmers are part of the Free Shit Army.

Oh, and it also brings out the freak wing of the GOP, with Republicans making all sorts of absurd policy announcements.

Candidates like Santorum, Huckabee, Michelle Bachman are always to scare the hell out of the rest of the country.  I remember Rick Perry started falling behind and had a sudden conversion that he was for outlawing abortion even in cases of rape and also wanted to talk about gays in the military.

It brings out the worst in the Party, I'd be all for a nationwide primary, or large blocks of states at a time.

360 "He supplies weed for CAC, is my suspicion. Grow lights take a shitload of power. Or so I've heard." That's an option I just might consider. Actually, it used to be the right sized house for the family. But now that the kids have their own homes, it's a little big for the wife and I. I just need to find the right east indian surgeon with a few generations of family living with them to sell this thing to.

361 I just need to find the right east indian surgeon with a few generations of family living with them to sell this thing to. In the exact same boat. Last time I checked Zillow my 'hood was outside even surgeons price range. Gotta find a husband and wife surgeon team who want enough acreage to land a small plane on. Gotta dump it at some point but I don't see any light at the end of the tunnel. #ThreeMoreYears

362 "Gotta find a husband and wife surgeon team who want enough acreage to land a small plane on." The couple next door are an Indian husband and wife, both radiologists. We've only got 2 acre lots, so I've got to find ones with a helicopter.

363 The couple next door are an Indian husband and wife, both radiologists. Another year or so, when ObamaCare bites the medical community in the ass, even they'll be sticking a sign out at the curb. I did find a buyer years ago, a school superintendent making ~300k, with a huge frickin 401k, in the Philly school system. But she got cold feet.

364 "Another year or so, when ObamaCare bites the medical community in the ass, even they'll be sticking a sign out at the curb." Our local hospital was just bought out by University of Michigan Medical Center, and they are talking about expanding it to a teaching hospital. This would help the local (upper) market. I'm thinking condo after this is sold. If not, we'll just hand the headache down through the generations.
