Happy Tuesday.

You might recall the dustup last year when Komen for a Cure announced that it would stop funding Planned Parenthood. Komen eventually reversed course and sacked its founder and CEO, but not before Planned Parenthood had raised $3 million with the promise to expand breast cancer screenings. Surprise! Planned Parenthood offered 90,000 fewer exams than the previous year.

Poll: Obama ends the year with approval ratings lower than all other modern two-term presidents. In fact, you gotta go back to Richard Nixon to find worse numbers. Click that link, there's a ton of other info in that poll.

36 Hot Air is dead to me now. Each morning I visit a number of websites for a general overview of what is going on in the world. From Drudge and Newsbusters to Huffington Post and Gawker. One of the stops has always been Hot Air, but that is going to change. I don't have the time to read 3 page articles on every subject. Hot Air, instead of giving me a couple well written paragraphs to summarize what the author is saying gives me a one-sentence teaser then essentially says "you're on your own, sucker". Well, I'm sorry, but I just don't have the time for that anymore. If you want good writing, drop Hot Air and put Just One Minute and Protein Wisdom on your lists. And let's get Ace to clean up his link list. Some of those websites haven't worked since disco was king.

51 From an earlier BB article:

Under the Ryan-Murray deal, active-duty personnel and retired veterans younger than 62 would be forced into a new pension plan. Traditional veterans received a yearly cost-of-living adjustment on their pension equal to inflation. Under Ryan-Murray, however, veterans will now receive inflation, minus 1%. In other words, their yearly pension payment will be below the increase in the cost of living. When a veteran reaches the age of 62, the cost-of-living adjustment would again be equal to inflation.

I got an increase on my SS yesterday.  A whopping 1.5%.  If they cut it by 1% they may as well save another 45 cents and not even mail out a notice.

56 Grace and peace be with you! Great Advent Hymns- "Lo, he comes with clouds descending" A majestic hymn with words originally by John Cennick and reworked by the great English Hymn writer, Charles Wesley. Advent has a dual emphasis. Not only do Christians look forward to the celebration of the birthday of the Lord Jesus Christ and prepare to make room in their hearts for him again,. They also look forward to his coming again in glory. The scripture readings for the season not only use the prophets in speaking of the coming of the Messiah, but they also use readings that emphasize being prepared for Christ's return. The History: http://www.oystermouthparish.com/lo-he-comes-with-clouds-descending. The music (with slightly different lyrics) from a lovely British Advent/Christmas music service This arrangement is probably by the contemporary English hymn writer and composer John Rutter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzmwmqxuhV0 In each heart lies a Bethlehem, an inn where we must ultimately answer whether there is room or not. When we are Bethlehem-bound we experience our own advent in his. When we are Bethlehem bound we can no longer look the other way conveniently not seeing stars not hearing voices. We can no longer excuse ourselves by busily tending our sheep or our kingdoms.... Ann Weems-"Kneeling In Bethehem"

Admittedly, I don't know a great deal about Hughes, but he always was a bit of a loner.  I think the crash shook him very deeply and amplified his desire to do what he wanted without anyone telling him differently.  And if you have his money, you can move around at 1 in the morning or call people up at midnight - you can go months without having to see anyone except for your immediate aides, and even then, you don't have to see them.  Remember that it took Hughes months to respond to his aides' insistence that he come out and deny the phony autobiography.

I think, as well, that having that sort of money would amplify your own feelings of worthlessness, if you have them.  "I'm ugly."

"No, you're not."

**thinks** "you just want my money.  Of course you'd say that."

Speaking from personal experience, I can tell you it's a vicious cycle.

82 Thanks for the Fontaine and De Havilland stories, MPPPP. I always enjoyed Fontaine's performance in "Rebecca" among other movies and she did a fine job in "Jane Eyre", but it drives me crazy how they left put the part of the book related to Rev St John Rivers and his sisters. That is a crucial part of the story, I guess there is only so much they can put in a 2 hour film.

There was a wonderful little tv show that arrived somewhere around the same time as X-Files, and covered much of the same topic.  It was called Dark Skies, and the concept was a  young couple  in the early 60s  who go to Washington with the Kennedy wave of do-gooders.  He is recruited into a secret organization  that is involved with aliens.

They do a lot of historical referencing, including the Kennedy assassination, but there was an episode with Howard Hughes, where he's notorious germaphobia is  explained.  Needless to say it has a supernatural origin.

106 Recall how Obama was going to support Nuclear Power?  Well I recieved some inside info a recently that his new and improved NRC headed up by the rabid anti-Nuke from Hairy Reid's office has embarked on a program requiring modifications at all the plants to combat a Fukashima type accident.  These are being required at plants 100's of miles from the ocean and the cost is ranging into the 100's of millions of dollars.  This will cause the older plants to shutdown.

In short, Obama is still a colossal liar. So when all the coal plants are gone and all the Nukes are gone what is next?   On that score he is doing everything he can do to eliminate natural gas which has made the gas fired plants somewhat cheaper to operate.

As I'm sure you know, federal employees have had their pay "frozen"  at levels from 2009, or thereabouts.  At least that's what they say.

The dirty little secret of course, is that federal employees  who are in the GS system get step increases every year for several years, then every other year, I think.  And the "locality  pay" gets factored in too, so if anybody says federal workers are not getting raises, it's not really true.  The pay grid may not change, but individuals get more cash, at least every other year.

Like Chesterton once said, sometimes you're lost for words just because of the giant obviousness of a thing. "He's...Pavarotti. Famous opera singer...?" I stammered. She'd never heard of him.

163 The last Cat Stevens album I got was Buddha and the Chocolate Box, an interesting endpiece to his heyday. Like poor old John Lennon, Cat was searching, so hard, but not finding truth. John found domestic bliss. Regardless of what we think of Yoko, aspiring to just be a better husband and father was something I was glad for John that he found, after his lost years. And he was right to not record for years. While disappointed in Cat Stevens' choice, I'd hoped he found peace, and was glad that when he thought he had, he quit music. Because... It is seeking and struggle which make for good rock (and other stories); rockers adapt poorly to hymns of joy and salvation. Would that some other 'enlightened' musicians had not tried to share. *cough* Starship *cough*

168 Good. GASTON COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - David Hendrix was outraged to learn that his son, 5, was issued a suspension from school for making a gun gesture with his hand. "He was playing army on the playground," Hendrix told WBTV. "I just felt like the punishment was way too severe." Hendrix's son is in kindergarten at Pinewood Elementary School in Gaston County. The boy was issued a one day in-school suspension, according to Hendrix. Looking to resolve the issue, Hendrix told WBTV that he met with the school principal to plead his case. At first, the school didn't budge, according to Hendrix. But Hendrix wasn't giving up. "I requested an immediate meeting that night with him myself and the school board, at their pleasure, anytime that night. And at that point they decided it was not worth the effort, not worth the headache and dropped everything right then and there," Hendrix said. Give these assholes migraines for their stupid ass policies.

Moreover, while I used to support the death penalty as a younger man, long-term observation has led me to believe it is inequitably applied. 258 Posted by: Blacksheep at December 17, 2013 09:05 AM (bS6uW) Catholic tradition actually allows for a death penalty under various conditions. Although many believe modern society with it's ability to build prisons and at least nominally care for prisoners does not fit those conditions. I'm still mostly ambivalent about the death penalty. I actually find the most persuasive argument to be the economic one: over time, accounting for the increased cost of appeals, it costs more to kill someone than to keep them alive for life sans parole. At the same time, some people (like Ariel Castro) just need to be wiped off the earth as a matter of vengeance if not justice.

Abortion is not the same as the death penalty: that is a false equivalence.

Babies are innocent of wrongdoing, whereas a convicted murderer clearly is guilty of something terrible, for which society has decided the penalty to be death.

But I agree that it is inequitably applied.

276 From Wiki:

In 2007 Schaeffer published his autobiography, "Crazy for God: How I Grew Up As One of the Elect, Helped Found the Religious Right and Lived to Take All (or Almost All) of It Back", in which he goes into much more detail regarding what it was like to grow up in the Schaeffer family and around L'Abri.

In 2011, he published another memoir, called "Sex, Mom, and God", in which he discusses growing up with his parents and their role in the rise of the American religious right and argues that the root of the "insanity and corruption" of this force in U.S. politics, and specifically of the religious right's position on abortion, is a fear of female sexuality.

287 A venerable American academic group's planned boycott of Israeli educational and cultural institutions over that nation's conflict with Palestinians has prompted a backlash from Jewish groups and at least one critic who plans to challenge the organization's tax exempt status. The 5,000-member American Studies Association, which bills itself as the nation’s oldest and largest association devoted to American culture and history, voted Sunday to boycott Israeli academic institutions. More than 1,200 members voted and 66 percent endorsed the resolution, which was unanimously supported earlier this month by the group's national council. At least one critic told FoxNews.com he’ll be taking his issues with Monday’s announcement to federal officials at the Internal Revenue Service. William Jacobson, a professor of law at Cornell Law School who runs LegalInsurrection.com, said he believes the boycott violates the group’s 501(c)(3) tax exemption status pertaining to its educational classification. “They can hold any view they want on the Middle East, but now that, as an organization, they have joined a boycott of Israel, they’re now a boycott organization and no longer a charitable one,” Jacobson said. “Our intention is to file a whistleblower claim with the IRS, asking the IRS to look into whether this conduct negates their 501(c)(3) status. I expect that to be done by year-end, if not sooner.” Nice idea, but with this Justice Department, don't hold your breath or bet heavy on the outcome

What she did was travel around, go on expensive retreats, give speeches where she collected a healthy salary, and shill for obama. She has told blatant lies about the guilt of murderers in her books. At an execution where everyone was ordered that they must be quiet and not talk, she started wailing forgive them lord they know not what they do. I'm amazed that the father of the victim who was raped and tortured didn't turn around and cold cock the bitch. She's an awlful woman who lies and feels justified for it. Fuck her.

*rolling eyes*    The left really    DOES believe that everything is a kneejerk reaction against sex, doesn't it?   How incredibly boring.    For a religio-sociofascistic ideology   that     depends on nuance to explain away    its   many    faux pas,     they really don't know how to use nuance at all.

I note that no one    on our side    ever    blames     the left's positions     on a fear of MALE sexuality, despite the fact that that's clearly    the basis for everything they hate.    Maybe we should start doing that.

301 A 13-year-old Northern California girl will be taken off life support Tuesday after she was declared brain dead following complications from surgery to remove her tonsils. KTVU-TV reported Monday that the head of the pediatrics department at Children's Hospital Oakland had told the family of Jahi McMath that the girl would be pulled from life support because she had been declared dead under California law. "We didn't want her to be removed from life support, but the decision is out of our hands, because it's been declared a legal death," Omari Sealey, McMathÂ’s uncle, told the station. Under California law, legal brain death must be declared by two separate doctors performing two separate sets of tests at least 3 hours apart. McMath had gone to Children's Hospital Oakland on December 9 to have her tonsils removed to cure a sleep apnea problem. Sealey told KTVU that McMath had trouble breathing and suffered "an enormous amount of bleeding" after the procedure. Then, on Thursday, McMath went into cardiac arrest, and was declared brain dead. I'd be curious to know what kind of insurance she had? Anyone know?

304 197. FenelonSpoke Holst is really something, as is his musical ouevre. Interesting Swedish musical family history, employed by the Russian Czar before exile to Germany, and on to England where Gustav was born. From the online Mark Levin Show, our taxes are spent in public service announcements repeatedly propagating to so-called anti-bully boo hoo hoo campaign: "the only thing I didn't learn in school today was why no one cares." Remind ourselves what we can yet create out of personal adversity, calling upon our own inner strength rather than self victimization or self destructive determination in life, waiting for someone else to "care". There is the spirit within which is the life and light and love emanating from The Ultimate. http://tinyurl.com/lstemmc "Gustav was an oversensitive and somewhat miserable child. His eyes were weak, but no one realized that he had to wear spectacles. His chest was also weak, and again no one bothered much with his asthma. He had to rest while climbing stairs. His father was determined to make young Gustav a good pianist, but even in his youth Holst was troubled with neuritis in his hands. That made his long hours of practice a severe strain. As he grew older, Gustav tried his hand at composition, but failed to gain scholarships to the Royal College of Music and various other colleges in London." Yet from Holst, we enjoy the purest, gentlest of lyrical carols, In The Bleak MidWinter, and the epic culmination of Lisztian transcendental programme music inspiring those who hear and reflect upon "The Planets" symphonic poems. http://tinyurl.com/k3kk975 Even as the world darkens, all the more strength comes from within letting shine upon the razor's edge.

318 "I have come to oppose the death penalty. As a Catholic, I believe in the sanctity of life and would therefore refrain from carrying out a death sentence the same as I would an abortion." While in some regards, I respect this as an attempt at moral logical consistency, the failure of the parallel is this: no unborn has ever proved to be an irredeemable sociopath too dangerous to be allowed to live, as far as I know. We need to improve our standards of justice, but I don't think mortal society is wrong to send certain cases to the higher courts where true justice prevails. But I'm not a Catholic nor a Fundamentalist, and while the climate of the times means I don't talk about it much, I also believe there are instances when the grievous choice of abortion may be the wisest course (and I mean 'dire threat to the mother and liitle chance if mother or baby surviving very earlist stages' type of hard material-life realities, not the wanton, egregious slaughter of healthy babies for 'birth control'), but I add that only to emphasize there are utterly different processes of reasoning involved in these different, unrelated instances of killing. Would you end the life of your fellow on the battlefield, obviously mortally wounded, screaming in anguish, begging for death? Talk about tough choices! Would you keep alive great gramma's body when she psychically flatlined long ago and her soul is already up there saying, gross, pull the plug, already? Yeah, I know that's tough, too, because we can only infer from brain activity, but the body is not the person. Would you respect the 'sanctity' of the life of some armed thug about to maliciously murder you, if you were cornered? Or if you'll turn the other cheek to that, how about if the thug is threatening your family or other innocents? My understanding is if its in your power, you don't shoot to disarm or disable a severe threat; you make sure the thug gets no second chance at you. These are the toughest choices; there is no one easy doctrine that covers every case. Life is precious, but not divine, or my miscarried grandchild would be school age today. Sometimes dealing with life means dealing death, by God. May mercy always guide us. ____ Woo. My tl;dr du jour. New one surely up. Siiigh
