HUMP DAY.

USAToday: "Insurers, consumers await HHS guidance as deadline looms." Just go read the whole thing. These folks are so boned. The woman who plans to take money from her IRA to pay for health insurance? No. NO. NO. The dude planning to pay cash for the birth of his child? Oy. The chick who is letting her son's insurance lapse for at least a month so that she can get covered? What in the world?

A federal district court judge ordered the Obama administration to disclose a "global directive" that it was trying to keep secret. The directive was a widely-disseminated, nonclassifed order that has the force of law, but the administration claimed it could keep its content secret merely because Obama Himself issued it. This was the second benchslap (PDF) for the administration this week:

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Wednesday, December 18, 2013.  On this day in 1777 the United States celebrated its first Thanksgiving after the victory over the British forces at Saratoga.  And today I am a proud great grandpa, yesterday evening; 8 pounds 5 ounces.

10 This came up yesterday and there were a lot of questions about it.  Especially since Obamacide is assigning a LOT of people to Medicaid.   If you are above the age of 55 (and below 65 when Medicare takes over) if you get health insurance from Medicaid your estate will be billed for healthcare expenses after you die.

And please note, this is from a federal law so it applies to every State unless they have specifically passed legislation to stop it.  This issue came about by a shitty hidden rule in the Obamacide act which forces people in a certain salary range onto Medicaid whether they wanted it or not and the new rule neglected the conflict with previous federal law.

11 Marc Faver (publisher of the Gloom and Doom Report) says the Fed will never end the QE program which buys bonds from the treasury.  However, in this MSNBC article they do not give the real reasons for this.  The real reason is that we continue to spend over $1T a year in deficits and foreign investors are not buying these bonds.  The Ryan budget did nothing to stop this shit either.  So basically QE is nothing more than printing money.  So what does that mean to the average citizen?  It means you will live with 20%+ inflation forever.

54 Military academies are internal-reviewing their sports involvement. One has the goal of dropping 13 teams. Now the only reason they're defined "Division I" in most activities is because of the "full ride scholarship" each and every athlete receives (and once you're counting it that way, their academic and equality scholarship rates are pretty high too), so look for some league downgrades at the very least.

Come to think, this is a great time for the annual attack on the existence of the academies to come to the fore. They're awfully expensive, we're laying off, and that equal civilian force we were promised needs a lot more training EBT funds.

The federal guidelines for weight have long been worthless.  And to make matters worse, recent "studies" have shown that just being overweight does not have an adverse impact on health unless you are either morbidly obese or have the so called-beer belly syndrome.  And I don't believe that last one either.

Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Thanks for the morning news, Vic.

Today's little story is about the luscious Constance Bennett.  If you're a fan of classic movies, you know her as Marion Kerby in 1937s Topper and 1939s Topper Takes a Trip. Born in NYC, she originally entered a convent (fantasy material for you pervs), but left to become an actress, following in the footsteps of her father and sisters*

She signed with Sam Goldwyn and made a splash in the movie Cytherea, a lost silent which was the first film to use the Technicolor process under artificial light.**  But she abruptly cut her career short in 1925 to marry a fellow named Philip Plant.  Always independent and outspoken, she didn't make too many friends at this point in her career; as costume designer Howard Greer remembered, "Constance Bennett, forsaking the New York stage for a patronizing try at pictures, looked upon our wardrobe in exactly the same way she might have looked upon a dead animal aswarm with maggots.  She wore what she brought with her and that was that!”

But weÂ’re joining her at a party thrown at the Colony Club in 1925, shortly after Gloria Swanson had married her second husband, impoverished French nobleman Henri, Marquis de la Falaise.  While indulging in bootleg champagne, the Marquis popped open a fresh bottle which spurted all over Bennett's bare back.  Henri apologized effusively, but Bennett laughed, "Think nothing of it, Marquis!  I never complain about bathing in champagne!"

So what's the point of the story?  None, really, except - after Swanson divorced de la Falaise, Bennett married him.  Of course, in Hollywood, nothing lasts forever, and the two divorced in 1940.

While Bennett is known for madcap comedy, she's well worth watching in 1932s What Price Hollywood? – occasionally seen on TCM - where she plays an ordinary waitress elevated to stardom, with all the heartbreak such a change brings.

Here she is in Topper Takes a Trip:  http://tinyurl.com/mp9qdto

And here she is again - wouldn't you love to take a champagne bath with her?  I know I would:  http://tinyurl.com/n5rad5y

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

* Her sisters were Joan and Barbara Bennett.  Joan is best known as Jo in 1933s Little Women, but she also achieved small screen success as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard in Dark Shadows.  Barbara more or less drifted through life, and if she's remembered at all, it's for being the mother of talk show gadfly Morton Downey Jr.

**some day I will have to do a post about the difficulties of lighting early movies.

A story from The Barrel:

Here's a picture of Paulette Goddard in 1940s North West Mounted Police:  http://tinyurl.com/o4ykfaa

Why am I posting that?  To answer, here's a publicity shot from 1949s Anna Lucasta:  http://tinyurl.com/p7ht4fj

Now, I'm not overly fond of the shoes, but I could have a lot of fun with them.  The reason I bring it up is that Cecil B. DeMille, director of North West, was well-known in Hollywood for having a foot fetish; aspiring actresses were advised to have the finest pedicure and wear their best shoes when going to see the great man*

When casting North West, Goddard got her part very simply - she walked into DeMille's office, took off her shoes and put her bare feet on the director's desk.

She walked out with a contract.

*DeMille didn't like nail polish, though; if he saw that on an actress' foot, he instantly dismissed her.

179 For those upset that people have the foresight to plan the transfer of their estates so as to avoid the most taxes, let me remind you - it is 100% legal, just and moral. Judge Learned Hand in two separate cases: "Any one may so arrange his affairs that his taxes shall be as low as possible; he is not bound to choose that pattern which will best pay the Treasury; there is not even a patriotic duty to increase one's taxes." "Over and over again courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging one's affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everybody does so, rich or poor; and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands: taxes are enforced exactions, not voluntary contributions. To demand more in the name of morals is mere cant."

The water outlet actually sits slightly below the top of the filter, so there's no chance of the water getting anything but grounds. The coffee outlet also has a filter on it to catch anything should it get through.

221 211 Posted by: Ed Anger at December 18, 2013 08:31 AM (tOkJB) As potentially hazardous as it might be, someone has to engage these people and have a REAL talk about race. I give credit for Rand Paul and others for going into the lion's den at places like the NAACP convention. But that group is a leftist front. Blacks have to be engaged on their own turf away from the Sharptons and other race-baiters. And black folks have to be engaged interpersonally at work and elsewhere by all of us. It goes back to a post here the other day about fear of saying anything lest you be called a racist. This is how the left silences opposition and perpetuates the big lie. Now, I will play the knockout game with myself. But Jon Stewart says it's a myth, so it's all good.

224 We hear that there is looming banana crisis in Costa Rica—the world’s 2nd leading exporter of the fruit—as this year’s crop is being threatened by an infestation of mealybugs, scale insects, and fungal infection.

Petulance, plagues, disease? It must be climate change, of course!

The Director of the Costa Rican Agriculture and Livestock Ministry’s State Phytosanitary Services, Magda González, told the San José Tico Times, “Climate change, by affecting temperature, favors the conditions under which [the insects] reproduce.” González estimated that the rising temperature and concomitant changes in precipitation patterns could shorten the reproduction cycle of the insect pests by a third. “I can tell you with near certainty that climate change is behind these pests.”

This is bananas.

True?  Yes and no.  While sleeping with a casting director or executive in the old days might have got you on the lot and perhaps a cameo, I can think of very few actresses who slept their way to the top.  Marilyn Monroe is an exception, but without her innate talent, her bedroom skills would have gotten her only so far.  The danger for a starlet* were the people on her level - the grips, prop men, other actors - who would trade food, money or "access" in exchange for sexual favors.

Now, as far as the "starlets" each studio had on call to provide attention to visiting VIPs - well, that's a different story and one too long to get into here.

*the writer Ben Hecht called a starlet "the term given to any woman in Hollywood over twenty who isn't actively employed in a brothel."

302 Shia LaBeouf has admitted to ripping off someone elseÂ’s work for his short film HowardCantour.com but claimed it wasn't intentional.

The 27-year-old actor released his 12-minute short starring Jim Gaffigan online on Monday but quickly pulled it down after the striking similarities between it and Daniel Clowes' comic Justin M. Damiano were revealed.

Shia, whose actions were called ‘shameless theft’ by the comic’s publisher Eric Reynolds, then took to Twitter to post a series of apologetic tweets, finishing with a dramatic 'I f****d up' although ironically it has been claimed his apology is strikingly similar to a four-year-old entry on Yahoo Answers.

The report said school officials deny they are trying to force Adler out. Adler, 62, told students the skit on prostitution was seen as a risk to the university.

Adler told the newspaper that she’s unsure if she wants to continue to teach in an atmosphere where her job is at risk over a complaint filed by a student. “That is a risk that really scares me. I can’t afford to take that kind of risk,” she said.

I told her one of my concerns was that I'd be tutoring at a school I was still attending. She said "how exactly is that a problem, I did that too." I responded "well you're not a guy. Somebody decided they didn't like my tutoring but the company refuses a refund, I'm one baseless claim away from being expelled because....justice. Even if I set up sessions in the middle of the quad at 12PM, it's still a possibility." She didn't really understand, and frankly I'm glad they just said "we don't need you." (I applied because a friend of hers at work said they needed people with expertise in bioethics, he even sent me the email that said that, but they place was disorganized and couldn't figure out if they actually needed that, then decided I should tutor high school biology. I haven't opened a biology book in 4 years. So obviously I wasn't ready for their "assessment." It was a clusterfuck.)

My father is a saint.  He was involved in my childhood, treats his wife with respect, and worked harder than he had to in order to provide more than was necessary.

I'm lucky.  Lots of boys don't have fathers like that, and they used to be able to find a mentor-figure in one of their teachers.  As more and more men realize what I've realized, that mentor stand-in will go away, and MORE boys will grow up without a positive male influence.

It's when consumers get BOHICA'ed by the Democrats prize piece of legislation, and millions wake up to the reality of no medical insurance.  Families, sick kids,  and  the  elderly, they will all be pre-bankrupt at that moment in time  thanks to the Democrat Party.

And where will the Man In Charge be while Rome burns?  Why, he will be taking a taxpayer-funded $4 million vacation to the sunny islands of  Hawaii  for some rest and relaxation.  If there were any justice in the world, he'd just stay there playing golf  or  whatever  for the remainder of his days so the rest of us have a fair chance to pick up the pieces of this disaster of a Presidency.

369 My father is a saint.

381 As a male, I will never consider a job as a teacher. The risks are simply too great. There are too many people who think 'a 30-something man with kids? Something's not right there...' Additionally, in the higher grades, I'd be one teenaged girl's wrongful complaint from unemployment, having my life destroyed and defending myself in court. It's not worth it. I was a fifty-something male who taught -- married, kids, and grandkids. I finally left because I hated the Principal -- who was the leftiest lefty I ever met. She took the school to the absolute brink of failure. Next thing you know, she started a whispering campaign against me. Vile stuff, though people won't tell me what she said. That's the bad. Parents still see me, years later, and thank me for inspiring their sons or daughters to have an interest in science. That's the good. Was it worth it? I'm not sure, the bitterness is still there.

There were many times when I regretted that I was missing the 'usual' high school experience, but as the years passed, I came to genuinely appreciate the fact that my fellow cadets had become better, more mature men as a consequence. I suppose that sounds elitist, but the facts is the facts. Males surrounded by males come to recognize and value leadership qualities, and manliness. Therein lies the virtue of organizations like the Boy Scouts, the military (well, it used to).

412 Vic - congratulations. God speed to you and yours. And thanks for the links as always, love to start my day with snark, links and coffee. Now, I need to pick a bone w/you. "I think there are probably some worse. If I had my way I would eliminate the civil lawyer profession and make everyone represent themselves in court for tort actions. And there would be no payout for anything other than actual provable damages." In 1982, my sister and some friends went up north 2 weeks before Christmas to play in the snow. On their way back, at 3:00 in the afternoon, a drunk SOB crossed the double yellow line and took out my sister, one of friends and did permanent damage to a third. It was his 3rd DUI. Your position is that my parents should have recovered, what, the ambulance bill and the burial costs? I dissent. Where pain and suffering are real, they should be recoverable. I went on to become a lawyer (although I don't practice in this area with rare exception). But that brings me to your other point. Requiring people to represent themselves is a bad idea. First. Freedom. If people want to hire a lawyer they should be able to do so. Second, some people are perfectly capable of representing themselves. I tell people that they don't need me when I think they don't. Many more don't have the ability to do it. They would get crushed if forced to represent themselves. I think you sometimes refer to "lawfare." I agree on many of those points; lawsuits shouldn't be like the lottery, although they sometimes are. Tort reform is needed. I look at this way: if you went up to a person on the street and said "this is going to happen to you (for example, a car accident with certain injuries and recovery times)" and told them "this is how much you're going to get; would you do that?" If the answer is "yes," the money given is too much. IOW, if the amount a person receives is well worth the injury and pain they went through, they have hit the lottery in a sense. If the answer is justifiably "no," (or in my families case, hell no), than what was received isn't too much.

Speaking of Baba Wawa, I broke out the dvd of Season 2 of SNL recently, and it's amazing how thoroughly they trash Walters with Gilda Ratner's impersonation of her.

Vapid and egocentric is the way she is portrayed, which we know is strikingly accurate.

Incidentally, for  anyone who is old enough to remember SNL from those days?  Chevy Chase is mostly an idiot.  Jane Curtain, unfunny, Lorraine Newman, unfunny, Garrett Morris, unfunny.

433 Didn't get to this earlier and there doesn't seem to be a daily dump to put it on now. Anyhow.... A beautiful advent hymn: "Savior of the Nations, Come" "Savior of the Nations Come" ("Nun komm der Heiden Heiland," LBW 2 . One of twelve hymns definitely ascribed to St. Ambrose, it is mentioned in manuscripts by Augustine (372) and other 8th and 9th century writers. Its Latin title is "Veni, Redemptor gentium." Ambrose was born in Trier, in Germany, between 337 and 340. When he was 13 years old his father died and his mother moved the family to Rome. There he received his education, distinguished himself as a lawyer and was appointed consul of two provinces (374) headquartered in Milan. Although he was only a layman and a catechumen, he was elected bishop of Milan, taking office a week after his baptism. As bishop, he found himself in direct conflict with the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ. He defended the orthodox faith vigorously throughout his life. Exhausted from his labors, Ambrose died on April 4, Easter Eve, in 397. He was considered Augustine's father in the faith. One of the distinguishing features of this hymn is that it expresses the longing of the nations, that is of the whole world, for the Redeemer. The hymn is informed by the theology of the Gospel of John. Originating with God the Father, the Redeemer comes to earth to do His work, even descending to death and hell, then reascending to God's high throne. What a reassuring message it is to us. The last stanza is a doxology to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, restating Ambrose's commitment to the orthodox faith against the Arians. Ambrose is known as the father of Latin hymnody. His hymns, intended for congregational singing, were characterized by simplicity and austerity. They were so popular that they found imitators, hence the te rm "Ambrosian hymns," Latin hymns ascribed to Ambrose but written by others. Ambrose is also said to have introduced the practice of antiphonal singing to the western church. Martin Luther prepared a quite literal translation of Ambrose's text, and it was included in the first Protestant hymnals, including the Erfurt Enchiridia (1524) and Johann Walter's 1524 collection of hymns. The words: Savior of the Nations, Come" by Martin Luther, 1483-1546 1. Savior of the nations, come, Virgin's Son, make here Thy home! Marvel now, O heaven and earth, That the Lord chose such a birth. 2. Not by human flesh and blood, By the Spirit of our God, Was the Word of God made flesh-- Woman's Offspring, pure and fresh. 3. Wondrous birth! O wondrous Child Of the Virgin undefiled! Though by all the world disowned, Still to be in heaven enthroned. 4. From the Father forth He came And returneth to the same, Captive leading death and hell-- High the song of triumph swell! 5. Thou, the Father's only Son, Hast o'er sin the victory won. Boundless shall Thy kingdom be; When shall we its glories see? 6. Brightly doth Thy manger shine, Glorious is its light divine. Let not sin o'ercloud this light; Ever be our faith thus bright. 7. Praise to God the Father sing, Praise to God the Son, our King, Praise to God the Spirit be Ever and eternally. lyrics: The music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldb56S3ZQ7M .

437 Eh, Something that bugged me the other day. Supposedly we have this "budget" and it's a shit deal admittedly but it seems to be the deal. And it "supposedly" cuts costs sometime in the future. But Harry Reid has already said he's gunning for an unemployment benefit extension when he gets back, and there's a farm (pork) bill still floating around. Exactly how the fuck do they play into the "budget" we supposedly already have? Or is this just the "doc fix" on a grander scale, we fooled the CBO but just not passing shit, which we'll pass separately.

438 In the '90s, a guy I knew at my gym (mid or late 40s) who tutored for money got into a Jerry Springer-esque situation with one of his students and the student's husband. His side of the story was that she was hitting on him incessantly so he referred her to another tutor. When he did that, she told her husband that either they had gotten involved or that he was making passes at her. He had to get the police involved, and I never did find out how everything ended. There were two punchlines to this story: 1. He was gay (quietly so) 2. When he was talking about the situation (in a group including a couple of people who did personal training on the side), he said, "Hell. If I wanted to be banging my clients, I'd become a personal trainer."

That's a good screed, but there's flip side. OK, so first freedom, someone should be able to hire someone to represent him if he wishes. But right there that moves the needle toward a system where justice is dependent upon how much money you have and not the merits of your case.

I'm not saying there's an easy answer, but I do believe that the justice system should be more egalitarian.  Perhaps part of the reason representation is so often necessary is because the legal system has turned into something that is inaccessible to the common man.  Laws are written in such complex language as to be nearly incomprehensible, the various courtroom procedures create a maze of crap for normal people to despair entering, etc etc.

I agree. In the contract area, there has been a move afoot for many years to simplify language. I often draft agreements where the person on the other side is not represented. It is important that they are readable and understandable and I use plain English. That hasn't happened on the legislative side. The ACA is virtually unreadable. Conservatives running for office should make this a part of their pitch and actually work on writing clear laws. They should also run on repealing crap laws.

Belushi visiting their graves was brilliant  at the time, and of course as you say, ironic.

The episode I just watched, they did a musical tribute to coins, and the joke was  a running  text scroll over the singers, referring to Belushi stealing coins from everybody.  The things is though,  other cast members sang  in silly ways, songs about pennies (from heaven), nickels (in the nickelodeon), and when Belushi got to his song "Quarter to 3," which was a silly pun, the thing is, he  belted out the number, and was drop dead perfect at presenting the song  as it should be sung.

488 This is not just about providing added muscle to a beleaguered and undermanned West Wing staff. According to interviews in recent weeks with an array of Obama insiders and a dozen current and former senior aides, Podesta’s hire is explicitly meant to shake things up inside the White House. In effect, I was told, it represents the clearest sign to date of the administration’s interest in shifting the paradigm of Obama’s presidency through the forceful, unapologetic and occasionally provocative application of White House power. Podesta, whose official mandate includes enforcement of numerous executive orders on emissions and the environment, suggested as much when he spoke with me earlier this fall about Obama’s team. “They need to focus on executive action given that they are facing a second term against a cult worthy of Jonestown in charge of one of the houses of Congress,” he told me.

We sometimes stumble across sites like this: http://tinyurl.com/ocx78 Granted, that's from a university with loads of resources. There's a guy who just put up a ton of math worksheets (dadsworksheets dot com) If you search "homeschool history curricula" you can see what's out there. 588 So I'm at the Doctor's office this morning reading a copy of Reader's Disgust and there's an article in it about what holds America together. The authors traveled from coast to coast to Alaska asking people what they thought. They said they got the best answer from some Podunk town in Texas. They asked the question to some couple in the Texas town and the couple asked the question back to the authors. The authors answered with what they thought was the best explanation they had heard so far. It was an analogy between the forces that hold a star together. The mass of the star attracts matter inward while its nuclear fusion pushes it apart. If not in balance the star would either collapse or explode. Similarly, they said, America is "pushed apart" by the Jeffersonian ideal of personal freedoms and limited government. But that's balanced by the Hamiltonian notion of a strong central government. Too much of Jefferson blows America apart into a nova of anarchy and too much Hamilton pulls the country into a black hole of tyranny. The authors thought this was very clever. But the authors felt the couple from Texas answered the question best with only one word: "Hope." Hmm... Who else pushed the word "hope" as the solution to America's problems? Did I ever tell you that I despise the hopium smokers?

595 Is Vic still around? On the plus side, I typed in "Chet Atkins" on Pandora, and the searches came up with: "and Mark Knopfler, and jerry Reid, and Les paul... at least I have something new to listen to now

596 Are we letting this post sit here to, sorta, "rise" like bread dough?

Is that why it smells so "yeasty"?

Or is there a dead hobo under the floor?

597 well, ya don't get to be the #8 conservative blog with like *content* or anything, it's because of the 600+ comment long open threads

You use the Democrat healthcare plan: Step 1: Don't get sick. Step 2: If you get sick- die. Step 3: If you get really sick- die quickly.

605 #59 #51 Therein lies the rub. I've studied Kate Upton ad nauseam. Sadly - that doesn't make me an expert.

Nothing beats hands-on training.

606 I am in PCA, but I've never done a track. I use to have access to most NASCAR tracks before I retired, but the car is too valuable for me to fuck up in a curve. I have enough fun taking those 20 MPH exit ramps at 70. Posted by: Nip Sip at December 18, 2013 11:07 AM (0FSuD) I agree. I drove my dad's car nowhere near as hard as he did. I didn't want to be the one behind the wheel if one of us put in the tire barriers.
