In a quote that may raise even more eyebrows than his feelings about gays, Robertson claims he "never" saw black people mistreated during the pre-civil rights era in his home state, and strongly suggests that African Americans were more content under Jim Crow.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

Titles of movies often change from script to screen.  Sometimes itÂ’s because the original title doesnÂ’t fit the film: AhhhnullldÂ’s The Last Action Hero was originally titled Extremely Violent.  Sometimes itÂ’s because the studio insists: 1919s The Admirable Crichton, based on the James Barrie play, was retitled Male and Female because Paramount was afraid people would think it was a movie about an admiral.*  And sometimes directors or producers use an alias title in order to get a controversial subject past the studio chiefs: Sunset Boulevard went under the innocuous title of A Can of Corn.

During the golden days of film, sometimes small-town exhibitors would change titles to pump up the local box office; one changed 1950s The Asphalt Jungle to Babes and Bullets while the Dan Dailey comedy  A Ticket to Tomahawk became The SheriffÂ’s Daughter.**

The practice was so well-known that Bob Condon, a comedy writer at the Poverty Row studio Eagle-Lion once posted a notice on the companyÂ’s bulletin board:

“The picture The Noose Hangs High will be retitled Laughter On The Gallows.  The Noose Hangs High was formerly titled The Tight Necktie and was adapted from the novel Give Him Some Rope.  In all communications, please refer to the picture as Laughter On The Gallows.  A rough print, unscored, now has the working title Laugh Till You Choke.  The finished print will carry the final title.  If further changes come through, you will be notified.”

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

IÂ’ve been reading Stephen Michael ShearerÂ’s new biography Gloria Swanson: The Ultimate Star.  At my current point in the book (1927), sheÂ’s just met the odious Joe Kennedy.  HereÂ’s what she looked like around then – a still from the movie Sadie Thompson:  http://tinyurl.com/o9sqedz

HereÂ’s Marilyn Monroe in A Ticket to Tomahawk:  http://tinyurl.com/kory7en

*ThereÂ’s also the myth that The Madness of George III was changed to The Madness of King George because suits at the Samuel Goldwyn Company thought people would think it was a sequel and wonder where Madness I and II were.

**The female lead in the picture was Anne Baxter.  A young Monroe had a bit part as the showgirl Clara.

91 70 Here's the full quote from the Phil Robertson GQ story:

Phil On Growing Up in Pre-Civil-Rights-Era Louisiana
“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I’m with the blacks, because we’re white trash. We’re going across the field.... They’re singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, ‘I tell you what: These doggone white people’—not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.” Posted by: Insomniac

Sounds about right- SSI was a third black folks when I grew up there. Except for those obnoxious "colored" signs, we were pretty much the same.

94 Grace and peace, Happy Friday to you, Gabriel, and best wishes for a great weekend. Here's an Advent tune that I wasn't acquainted with. The words encourage Christians prepare for Christ's second coming and the second and third stanza make reference to the parable Jesus told of the Bridemaids with the lamps. I can't really find much history on this hymn and am in kind of a rush today, but it has a lovely Welsh tune with it: The music as sung by a choir http://tinyurl.com/nqj4cvy And the stanzas in case you can't hear the all the words: 1. Rejoice, rejoice, believers! And let your lights appear; The evening is advancing, And darker night is near. The Bridegroom is arising, And soon he will draw nigh; Up! pray, and watch, and wrestle! At midnight comes the cry. 2. See that your lamps are burning; Replenish them with oil; Look now for your salvation, The end of sin and toil. The watchers on the mountain Proclaim the Bridegroom near, Go meet him as he cometh, With alleluias clear. 3. O wise and holy virgins, Now raise your voices higher, Until in songs of triumph Ye meet the angel choir. The marriage-feast is waiting, The gates wide open stand; Up, up, ye heirs of glory! The Bridegroom is at hand. 4. Our hope and expectation, O Jesus, now appear; Arise, thou Sun so longed for, O'er this benighted sphere! With hearts and hands uplifted, We plead, O Lord, to see The day of earth's redemption, And ever be with thee! Amen. Prayers for the folks who post here. For strength and God's protection for Ace and the cob bloggers and all who speak truth to power in the conservative blogosphere (Hope Ace is feeling better too) For blessings for everyone, for healing for those who need it and for rough places to be smooth. For the Christians: 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[a] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

That's why the BS outrage has to be questioned every time and about everything. Are they outraged at this one person, or the group that they belong to no matter how loosely (tea party racists). The tables need to be turned on the outragers every time they speak. Obama bad mouthing repubs because they won't kiss his ass? He needs to be questioned about why EXACTLY he is butt hurt. And WHY he thinks his idea is better. Show some numbers. Don't let anyone from any party get away with "for the children" bullshit anymore. The same with Tingles and the rest. Why is what someone did or said so offensive to you? How can you degrade an entire community/ organization  for what one person is saying? Is that not racist/sexist/ whateverist of you?

Deety: I spurgled on Great Courses DVDs on How to Listen to and Understand Great Music. It's wonderful - something like 37 1 hour courses on music from the ancient Greeks up to the 20th century. I'm really developing a love of Bach.

Some people are all to willing to take what Hollywood says about southern people or ridiculous caricatures made by the press, as fact.  I guess it makes them feel superior to "that" group of people.  Nothing like dumb, stupid southerners to fill the bill.  And they talk funny.  The Beverly Hillbillies, Gomer Pyle, USMC, etc.  And who better to blame all the countrys ills on.  Sure, we have our share of racists and down right mean people but we are no worse than  the rest of the country.  We are everything the left hates, so there must be some good in us.

Genesis Chapter 3 Verse 1:
'Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field the Lord God had made.'
So, Satan has been lying to man since dang near the beginning? Is that how he gained control of the culture/media of the world? Lying? Yep. I believe GOD. I support Phil.

243 @96. There is a saying down here in the South, "you have to be from the South to understand the South."

The movie "Winter's Bone" was imo an unsparingly honest portrayal of people in the Ozarks which went well beyond the Whoreyweird stereotypes.  Earlier this week I very quickly read a book, "Give Us a Kiss", by the author of the book the movie was based on, Daniel Woodrell, which I'll comment on at length in the Sunday book thread; but for now I'll say that he's a major talent and definitely an insider to the area.  The late Harry Crews also wrote from the heart on the South.

246 Serious point.

What has offended me for well over 10 years now is being called a "breeder" by gays.  Every time I hear it, it sets my teeth on edge.  It really, really offends me to hear my relationship with my wife trivialized like that.

As I hear the self righteous liberals whining about Robertson's unwillingness to celebrate homosexuality, it has become a bludgeon I am using in response.

I've always just let that term slide, but no longer.

What outrages me about the "breeder" label is that it's is glaringly sexist and completely condescending, yet, those selfsame babies that Gay men insisted they be allowed to adopt are produced by people breeding with other people, either naturally or artificially.  No matter how fabulous one may be--like say Neil Patrick Harris or Elton John, one still needs a uterus--rented, borrowed, or coerced to produce a baby.

I grew up in the south. I lived in New Yuck for a couple of years. On a trip to a baseball game, I was harangued by a New Yucker about those awful southerners. They are the raciest. My response was that having lived in both places, I found New Yuck to be the more hateful. While blacks and whites had their problems in the south, New Yuckers of all ethnicities hated each other.

268 Drudge is flash reporting that King Barry will again come amongst us and hold a press conference, no doubt to trumpet his latest magnanimity in granting people whose insurance he stole an opportunity to temporarily replace the cafeteria-menu comprehensive policies they liked with truly shitty, overpriced cat-only plans, assuming of course that insurers (who truly have to be getting tired of this shit by now) can write, advertise and sell them between now and the end of the year. At best, these poor folks will be under-insured; at worst they will be uninsured, but King Barry has a new plan for that too: they won't have to pay the mandate/tax/royal-tribute the law clearly says they should. From Barry's perspective he probably thinks this is all their fault anyway for not being in a union. Thus will speak Thutbama. Be still my beating heart.

280 By Tuesday afternoon Mike Donnelly from HSLDA put out a statement saying "This is the biggest over reach I've seen in a very long time if ever in the area of imposing regulation on home schoolers." Later that evening, HSLDA sent out their evening e-mail that anounced a headline of "Worst-Ever Homeschool Law Proposed". We were receiving intel reports that Cafaro's office had been overwhelmed and inundated with phone calls all day on Tuesday and it was continuing through Wednesday. OEF called to confirm and received confirmation calls were coming in from home schoolers and not stopping.

By Wednesday, the OEF site had been registering a hit count of 157,474 times on Tuesday! On Wednesday it was 148,115 for a two-day total of 305,589 times. Just a month ago we were considering shutting down the domain for a season hiatus. We at OEF knew the Lord has been orchestrating this before we knew what was to happen.

The OEF Facebook group was receiving a large influx of new members and we had volunteers to organize a TweetFest to tweet legislators and influential conservatives to give the issue more traction. The Cato Institute dropped a huge post eluding to the far-reaching infringement on the rights of home schoolers in Ohio. The pieces were falling into place for the "perfect storm" to overwhelm the opponents of home schooling and charter schooling parents.

By 3:30pm on Thursday afternoon, Senator Cafaro had issued this statement, which we had confirmed on the phone an hour before it was released:

SB 248 was never meant to be a policy debate about educating children in the home. It was meant to address weaknesses in the law pertaining to child protection. Unfortunately, the true intent of the bill to curtail child abuse has been eclipsed the by the issue of homeschooling.

After consultation with TeddyÂ’s family, we have collectively decided the best course of action is for me to withdraw SB 248, and instead pursue a more comprehensive approach to address the current challenges in the stateÂ’s social service and criminal justice system.

It is our hope that this new focus will bring the discussion back to where it was always intended to be: protecting children.

... but of course, it's FOR THE CHILDREN

285 Speaking of Free Speech:

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) signed a controversial bill Thursday that makes it harder to force schools to change race-based team names and mascots.

In a statement, Walker invoked the First Amendment as an explanation for supporting the bill.

"I am very concerned about the principle of free speech enshrined in our U.S. Constitution," he said. "If the state bans speech that is offensive to some, where does it stop? A person or personsÂ’ right to speak does not end just because what they say or how they say it is offensive.

Hint: Unpossible for a number of reasons.   But, it is about time for Bobo to try and shift the blame once and for all to the insurance companies.

1. Everyone is exhausted from all of the 404Care programming already done this year.

2. There are no available programming resources available--they are all frantically trying to finish project that must implement by 12/31/13.

3. The actuaries can't rate it that fast.

4.  Underwriting can't write the policies that fast.

5.  50 insurance commissioners can't sign off on the policies and rates that fast.

6.  Legal can't review the policies and underwriting that fast.

7.  Additionally, there are two holidays next week and most people take three days of vacation to spend the whole week with their families.  I will only be working two days next week.

I try to talk to people at work about games, teams and wins and losses and they don't have a clue much less any allegiance to a team. It's all about individual players. Hell, most of them don't even have a favorite team.

305 If you were working on a state exchange project, no worries in getting your 40 hours in for the week during those 2 days...lol.

It's bad. And everything you said is true.

I'm only planning to work 4 days next week at this point...sigh

I love that Obammy thinks he can just wave a magic wand and the insurance companies will     be able to create, out of thin air, a slew of catastrophic coverage plans for the poor souls who have lost their insurance because of his infernal "law."   Does he believe insurance companies are staffed by unicorns and Keebler elves?     Does he think it's just a matter of a few spreadsheets being updated and everything's going to be hunky dory?   Does he think that people are going to break their backs over the Christmas and New Year holidays to cater to HIS illegal Executive dictats?   And if they do, does he think they'll be HAPPY about it?

And    does he think that people who had very good, COMPREHENSIVE plans are going to be     thankful that he's deemed to act    on their behalf    (*snort*)   by permitting them to buy CATASTROPHIC coverage?

Of course no one can ask him any of this, since he'll be winging his way to Hawaii soon, if he hasn't already.   Just because everyone else's holiday week(s) get to be ruined by his petulant    monarchism doesn't mean HE should have to deal with the fallout.   He's Preezident, bitches.

*spits on him!*

SB 248 was never meant to be a policy debate about educating children in the home.

Sure it wasn't, you statist scrunt.

It was meant to address weaknesses in the law pertaining to child protection.

Uh, huh.  "for the children."  The first refuge of the scoundrel.

Unfortunately, the true intent of the bill to curtail child abuse has been eclipsed the by the issue of homeschooling.

Funny, that - people don't want Marxists like you bringing up another generation of Obot Pajama Boys.  Time to increase school fees or something like that to punish those racist taxpayers.

Yeah, it's a total pain to get up, bake the cookies, ship the cookies, then strap the saddle onto the unicorn, and schlep into work to program the code, ship the code, get screamed at for one burnt cookie or one bad bit of syntax, ride the unicorn home, unsaddle the unicorn, feed the unicorn, and get two hours of sleep disturbed by horrible dreams of cookies that won't bake and code that won't scan and then do it all over again.  Helluva life.

341 Definitely different levels/forms of race-related interactions depending on geography. I hesitate to call it different levels of "racism", because I think it's more how people view things, often without malice or any of the other connotations of the "-ism". I've heard he n-word in MA and in NC, but I've never been somewhere where it was used frequently or by more than one or two people. That's just assholes being assholes, no matter where you are. A thing I definitely noticed down here in NC is how plain-spoken people are about things that would cause a New Englander to pause. Like the terms "black" neighborhoods, black "schools", even "black" chicken places and movie theaters. Everybody from our Realtor the day we got here to my current neighbors, some black, uses the "black" descriptor when giving directions, etc. Of course, we have specifically "Black" newspapers and Universities in town, so it's part of the fabric.
