Happy Festivus. I got a lot of problems with you people! And now you're gonna hear about it!

There's no shortage of Obamacare news on Deadline Day. Support for Obamacare has hit an all-time low in CNN's poll.

The AP realized yesterday that people might not be taking into account the full cost of Obamacare plans when they purchase them, suggesting that "buyers will be in for a shock when they get medical care next year and discover they're on the hook for most of the initial cost." While AP was catching up with this idea yesterday, the rest of us have been pointing out the concept of "sticker shock" for quite some time now.

Reuters, meanwhile, catches something I missed: the Obama admin suggested, vaguely, that there will be a "good faith exemption" from the individual mandate next year with a "special enrollment period."

The academic group that called for a boycott of Israel is getting more scrutiny than it bargained for. As many schools condemn the organization, it turns out that the organization was falsely listing member schools.

Posted by: BackwardsBoy, who did not vote for this shit [/i][/s][/b] at December 23, 2013 03:00 AM (0HooB)

Morning,Â’rons and ‘ronettes.  Am I in before Teh Vic?  This will be my only story this week; IÂ’d like to take a Christmas break and recharge.  I hope you enjoy it.

Some of the best acting in Hollywood took place off the screen.  HereÂ’s an example:

Cinematographer Leon Shamroy (Cleopatra, The Agony and the Ecstasy, Planet of the Apes) was a great artist, but director Andrew Stone (Julie, A Blueprint for Murder)* thought he was just as great an actor.  During the filming of 1943s Stormy Weather, Shamroy insisted that he needed an entire day to light one set, a request that drove Stone to fits of anger, especially when he saw how Shamroy did it.

He would sit in a chair, reading a paper, until a gaffer came on to the set.  Shamroy would get up, strut onto the stage and point to different lights – all without saying a word.  The gaffer would nod – in silence – and then Shamroy would go back to his paper.  Half an hour later, the two would go through the same pantomime again, over and over until the set was properly lit.

“All done in silence, for dramatic effect,” Stone later fumed.  “Just an absolute act.”  And while he agreed that Shamroy got fabulous results, the director was certain it was all a trick to lengthen the time needed on set and to justify the cinematographerÂ’s huge salary.

When, after principal shooting on the film was complete, Stone and Shamroy were called back for additional footage.  Stone was working on another movie at this time, so he could only spare one Saturday to collaborate with Shamroy.  Shamroy, for his part, was furious – he was supposed to catch a private plane to the Stanford game, and with his way of lighting a set, he would never make it.

Stone pulled the fuming cameraman aside.  “Look, Shamy,” he told him, “youÂ’re not fooling me.  IÂ’m on to you.  Nobody is here.  ItÂ’s Saturday.  IÂ’m not going to tell anybody.  So why donÂ’t you just light the set in ten minutes and get your plane?”

Fifteen minutes later, the set was lit, the scene shot and Shamroy caught his plane.

Hope you all have a wonderful day and a merry Christmas.

*Stone also directed 1943s Hi Diddle Diddle, silent star Pola NegriÂ’s penultimate film role until 1964s The Moon-Spinners.  HereÂ’s a publicity still of the seductive actress, born Barbara Apollonia Chalupiec:

Not that there is that much difference, but even Columbia makes NYU look like Hillsdale College in comparison. And it is the home of such wonderful Judeophiles as Rashid Khalidi. It's all a lie. ? for you.

what could cause a dns server to be slow all of a sudden.

My home page is loading slowly not like usual but if I use a more popular site as homepage there's no problem and then I can access the lesser used page that was my home page with no delay.

I may not be explaining that well.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with a delay from the dns server of my isp when my browser starts up but using a different site will make it load faster.

I think they gave the storms names so that the Weather Channel can have cool graphics on the screen, like when HURICANESSSSS are coming,  while they have some "reporter" standing somewhere with snow coming down getting all doom and gloomy on the "storm". That way they can waste each half hour telling us nothing except what the current temp is, instead of telling us what the forecast is.

57 And I said nothing about the ethnicity of the doctors.

If you've ever been in a hospital, if you pay attention you will find them sticking all kinds of stuff on your bill that are barely justified.

I got billed once for a session where I was supposed to have been taught how to use a wheelchair (which I never needed or used).

I had all kinds of stuff and doctors tacked on to that bill that made no sense at all considering what I was there for.

Called up these places and got either reduced (and I mean really reduced to like 10%) or removed from the billing AFTER i complained and wrote them letters. Funny thing that. Think they would've bothered if I'd had insurance or paid it without complaint?

It's the only service industry where you can't find out what it will cost until after you agree to have anything done. No others do that sort of thing only the medical industry. (that I know of. Now some moron out there will tell me I'm wrong and show me up so go ahead.)

It may be doing more than just DNS things, and/or it may be under attack, or a drive could be failing and its doing a lot of recalibrate re-tries.  There's a zillion reasons why some machine might be slower than normal.

60 Susan Rice, who was rewarded for lying her ass off about Benghazi, shows she still has the touch:

National Security Advisor Susan Rice appeared on Sunday night’s 60 Minutes with Lesley Stahl, and one of the issues she addressed was the continued fallout from the Edward Snowden NSA leaks. Rice argued that NSA officials didn’t lie about intel dragnets, they just “inadvertently made false representations.”

62 I posted this last night, but for those that missed it, it's beautiful version and a short video about a lovely carol: Stories of great hymns- "I Wonder As I Wander" The story of a haunting ballad heard in Appalachia in 1933. The Mayor of Murphy, NC tells the story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FttMHRyD6E.. A beautiful version sung by Joan Baez: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FttMHRyD6E The words: I wonder as I wander out under the sky How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die For poor on'ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander out under the sky When Mary birthed Jesus 'twas in a cow's stall With wise men and farmers and shepherds and all But high from God's heaven, a star's light did fall And the promise of ages it then did recall. If Jesus had wanted for any wee thing A star in the sky or a bird on the wing Or all of God's Angels in heaven to sing He surely could have it, 'cause he was the King I wonder as I wander out under the sky How Jesus the Saviour did come for to die For poor on'ry people like you and like I; I wonder as I wander out under the sky .

I've heard about that before. Something to look into.

Plus I've wondered a few times lately if Verizon isn't delaying stuff for me because I'm a dsl only subscriber and they've been trying to marginalize that service for a couple years now. I understand I use the same pipe that their higher priced services do and cost the same for them to maintain but they only get a third of the money.

But then maybe my tinfoil hat is too tight.

however after the snowden files, who knows what anyone is doing.

I got billed once for a session where I was supposed to have been taught how to use a wheelchair (which I never needed or used).

I had all kinds of stuff and doctors tacked on to that bill that made no sense at all considering what I was there for.

.They charged me $85 for a "garment bag" where they put my clothes while I was in for knee surgery.  It was a large zip lock plastic bag.  I tried and tried to get them to remove it but they said it already had my ID sticker placed on it and they could not remove it or reuse it so Tricare had to pay.

Don't forget, Medicaid, Medicare and mandatory treatment protocols have been screwing with the mechanics of free market principles for the medical industry.

Top that off with every hospital using different proprietary software to do their billing. (the hospital where I went would bill me differently than their financial accounting office and payments would get all screwed up.)

Also there is the factor of guilds (nurses, doctors, techs) all being separate from the hospital billing system.

Who here hasn't got a shock when you get a hospital bill and then five different bills from the radiologist, the gas passer, the surgeon, etc.)

But most of that is because people have been insulated from the actual payment for services for so long it's distorted the market and the billing procedures.

There is a tendency to take advantage of that.

But I'm pretty sure that if the Gov't hadn't started screwing around with the market place that all that could've gotten sorted out.

152 I agree that healthcare costs are way out of hand. I took my daughter to the ER for pyelonephritis and the bill was $2600.00 for a 4 hour stay. The Doc's professional fee was $400, but the insurance allowed only $160.00. The rest was hospital charges, not the physician. I get paid $700.00 to do your laminectomy-including all post operative care, but your bill will be close to $10k. That isn't my charge, that is the facility mostly. Physicians fees make up 18% of healthcare expenditures in this country. The propaganda works, doesn't it? Even here at AoS, healthcare costs=it's the doctor's fault

171 The ASA thing is easily explained: individual membership in the ASA is dependent on salary but is at most $120/yr. This is in line with most professional orgs. "Institutional membership" comes with a magazine which is more expensive without the institutional membership. The institutional membership is...$170/yr. That's petty cash in the department budget and would be paid on the request of a faculty member without controversy (until now). Even so, some faculty member could be paying the fee out of his own pocket.

I like Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas because it is bittersweet and reminds us of those away fighting the war.

The original  Hugh Martin and  Ralph Blaine  lyric was:

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,

This may be our last;

Next year we will all be living in the past.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas,

Pop that champagne cork;

Next year we may all be living in New York.

"God, that's so sad," Judy Garland told Blaine.  "Can't you make a more positive, happy lyric?  I can be sad, but if I'm sad and the lyrics are sad, it's too sad.  It's too much of one thing."

Blaine understood and came up with the version we still sing every December.

181 DrC -

I look at my bills in detail, and I fully agree with your assessment.  The docs get peanuts in comparison with the facility fees.

But.. here's the thing.. in many places, doctors ARE the facility owner/managers.

So many hospitals and surgical centers are now owned by consortia of doctors that it is hard to tell who runs what.

I don't really know the answer to these costs problems, but I believe having a multi-tiered pricing system is probably one of the base causes.

Personally, I have always been a proponent of a universal catastrophic safety net administered through private insurers.  You, as a patient, may or may not decide to purchase gap/supplemental coverage through those private insurers.

But with everyone's catastrophic illnesses covered, I do believe those wildy expensive prices that almost no one pays would go away.

Never underestimate inertia.

Things at rest tend to stay at rest. (or something like that)

And since Obama himself seems to be thrashing around; who cares? Who knows what's going to happen now? Better to wait and see. Especially if you don't have any pressing need.

It's really only the desperate and the foolish who are signing up.

I spent the better part of yesterday evening performing PM on the sleigh.  Needed a little touch-up paint, and I cleaned the underside that was coated with reindeer poop.

The reindeer have been on a high protein diet for the past month because of the rigorous routine demanded on Christmas Eve.  Unlike Obama and his minions, we're ready to meet the demands of children worldwide, and we will perform as we have for decades.

Ms. Claus has been rather cranky since yesterday, and I believe she has probably begun her monthly period.  This is most unfortunate because I would have liked farewell sex prior to beginning the adventure.  Oh well, all is not lost, and in the proud tradition of my favorite military blog, Ace of Spades HQ, Ms. Claus will be called upon to blow me as a send off gift.  Yeah, that's it, a good old fashioned blowjob to celebrate the birth of Christ.

The ratio of teachers to 'other support personnel' has climbed through the roof. During a period when the personal computer made access to information and the ability to quickly disseminate it a simple task. But who cares? It's only taxpayer money. In your example; who cares? They had this weird statement about it only being Duck Dynasty merchandise, not Duck Commander.  But maybe their DC stuff didn't have Phil on it.

Anyway, they got a shit storm as a result.  Cracker Barrel is one of the few places you can go and find outright Christian gifts for sale.  Members of GLAAD aren't their target clientele.

Hell, I don't watch DD, didn't know who Phil Robertson was when this started, and have a gay daughter, and even I was going to stop going to Cracker Barrel (and it is a favorite local spot for me).

I think a lot of the push back right now is over the blatant bullying tactics of GLAAD.  They want to think is is homophobia, but they are reading it wrong.

Ah, here we go. . .     Former Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Gabriel Gomez attacked two prominent GOP activists on Facebook.

Gomez wrote a blistering attack on Rob Eno of the influential blog RedMassGroup and Worcester GOP official Chris Pinto.

Gomez alludes that they are involved with the Klu Klux Klan and "are an embarrassment to our civil society:"

"I thank God every day for people like Chris Pinto and Rob Eno because they serve as perfect examples to my kids of who and what not to be when they grow up. . .the level of ignorance and intolerance exhibited by them and their small "Klan" are an embarrassment to our civil society.  Merry Christmas."

Just a few months later, when Gomez was a candidate for U.S. Senate against ultimate winner Ed Markey, Gomez actively sought the support of the Worcester GOP and RedMassGroup.

In response to Gomez's charges, Chris Pinto issued the following statement:

As some of you may know the former candidate for US Senate in Massachusetts recently made vile and defamatory statements against myself and Mr. Rob Eno, who runs the conservative website Red Mass Group.  I had considered not saying anything about this publicly but now that the horse is out of the barn I find it necessary to defend my reputation especially when it comes to the "Klan" comment that he made about me.

My feeling on gun control and the Klan are well documented.

GoLocalWorcester's effort to reach Gomez were unsuccessful. It should be noted that Gomez changed his position on gun control during the course of the U.S. Senate campaign which raised concerns about Gomez's GOP credentials with many conservatives.

It's also noted that the post was deleted, but sadly for the winner of the "John McStain Dishonoring Your Uniform Award," screencaps are forever.

I won't bother with Hanukkah, that ended weeks ago.

Kwanzaa?  Nope, when your holiday is more than 50 years old, I'll think about it.

219 It's the same thing in public schools. The ratio of teachers to 'other support personnel' has climbed through the roof.

There was an article in the local fishwrap this morning about how "guidance counselors are more necessary now than ever."  I'm guessing the decline of the family means a lot more fucked-up kids than before, but apparently these crucial programs that need funding include a year-long program for 8th graders so they don't feel scared when they move into 9th grade.  O_o

I know I'm not fully human, but that just seems like make-work/revenue stream for adults.

220 Just read the Fox story about how Jim Lovell is going to help re-enact the Christmas eve broadcast from Apollo 8. How the country has changed, huh? Can you imagine an astronaut broadcasting a reading from Genesis today? NASA's front office would go crazy.

Movie trivia:  at the end of Apollo 13, when Tom Hanks shakes hands with the commander of the carrier that picks him up, the commander is played by the real Jim Lovell.

221 @19 The lead bullet ban? It's not going to happen. It was pointed out somewhere 95% of all the lead used in bullets is recycled. The smelter closing will have no affect on production. The CA affect? Meh.

223 Theycharged me $85 for a "garment bag" where they put my clothes while I was in for knee surgery. It was a large zip lock plastic bag. I tried and tried to get them to remove it but they said it already had my ID sticker placed on it and they could not remove it or reuse it so Tricare had to pay. Posted by: Registered Voter at December 23, 2013 07:44 AM (MZGhy) then Tricare is stupid. AFAIK, that type of thing is considered a "Modality" and most insurance companies don't pay for modalities. Other fun Modalities include: $10 for a paper cup to put your pills in Gloves $25 for an ice pack for Physical Therapy (in addition to the cost of the session). That one was a fun one to argue when my wife had PT and they tried to get me to pay full price *before* billing my insurance, because, they claimed, deductible. The chargemaster needs to go. It's entire purpose is to scare consumers, it's basically extortion. I've argued this before in a room full of hospital mission VPs and gotten "nobody pays it, it's not a problem." To which I responded "Then get the hell rid of it." and got "we can't do that we need it." (WTF?!) Idiots, all of them, and now they'll reap the government fueled whirlwind they sowed.

225 >>That treaty Carter brokered between the Poles and the Hawaiians never was honored. Heh. Good morning all y'all. I have extra wrapping paper if anyone needs a roll or 10. Seems I stocked up last year and didn't need to buy several rolls this year. Some of it would make nice wallpaper...

226 I will never forget one of those "Parade Magazine" "What do people earn" articles.  Some career counselor in it had an income of something like $14,000 per year.

Nobody making that little has any business counseling anyone about career choices.

I remember having a conversation on thiis very blog about what a creep I suspected this guy to be. Others amoungst us agreed. This was when he was singing a consevative tune on the radio and making TV appearances. I think we should vet all candidates. It seems none of us rons have the perfect BS detecter, but together there would be no way to put anything over on us.

The  biggest  scam on earth is to be a "grief counselor" at school.

You want to know why we have a nation of PJ Boys?  Grief  counselors.

237 North Korea wants Santa to ID himself and adhere to a predetermined flight zone. Normally Santa delivers sticks and coal to A holes, but in this case I think the bad kids get Kill em Jong socks full of maggots. The good kids get some Kimchi slopped in there too!

247 ** The biggest scam on earth is to be a "grief counselor" at school. You want to know why we have a nation of PJ Boys? Grief counselors. ** Or any sort of counsellor, really. In retrospect, the presence of one on the bridge of the Enterprise D in "Star Trek, the Next Generation" should have been a sign (or at least a reflection) of where society was heading. In Kirk's era she would have been in the sickbay or the ship's bar, always assuming the Kirk-era Enterprise even had one, she would have had bigger cojones than Kathryn Janeway, and anyone reporting to her with whiny self-esteem issues might have been told to harden the fuck up or find themselves transferred off at the next Starbase maintenance stop.
