Merry Christmas.  For those of you that don't work in always-on industries, please take a moment to thank those who sacrifice their holidays to keep your power, internet, water, and the many other functions that make modern life so enjoyable operating.  For my part, I'll be happy when I see the paycheck.  20 hours of overtime in two days!  Woo!

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  ThereÂ’s nothing I can say today that would better the words of Charles Dickens:*

"There are many things from which I might have derived good by which I have not profited, I dare say," returned the nephew, "Christmas among the rest. But I am sure I have always thought of Christmas-time, when it has come round-apart from... the veneration due to its sacred name and origin, if anything belonging to it can be apart from that-as a good time; a kind, forgiving, charitable, pleasant time; the only time I know of, in the long calendar of the year, when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut-up hearts freely, and to think of people below them as if they really were fellow-passengers to the grave, and not another race of creatures bound on other journeys. And therefore, uncle, though it has never put a scrap of gold or silver in my pocket, I believe that it has done me good, and will do me good; and I say, God bless it!"

A very merry Christmas to you all.

43 Christmas Eve Prayer Loving God, Help us remember the birth of Jesus, that we may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and worship of the wise men. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children,and Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake. Amen. Robert Louis Stevenson

Despite mild weather, I find myself singing this. A lot. I suppose it is yet another way to say "goodbye" to my Emily-child, since it was one of her favorite hymns: http://www.hymnsite.com/lyrics/umh221.sht

1. In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
in the bleak midwinter, long long ago.

2. Our God, heaven cannot hold him, nor the Earth sustain;
heaven and earth shall flee away when he comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
the Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

3. Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
but his mother only, in her maiden bliss,
worshiped the beloved with a kiss.

4. What can I give him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
if I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
yet what I can I give him: I can give my heart.

Heard this on Bill Bennet's morning in america earlier this week:

The Hands that First Held Mary's Child by Thomas H. Troeger

The hands that first held Mary's child were hard from working wood, from boards they sawed and planed and filed and splinters they withstood.  This day they gripped no tool of steel, they drove no iron nail, but cradled from the head to heel our Lord, newborn and frail.

When Joseph marveled at the site of that small breathing frame, and gazed upon those bright new eyes and spoke the infant's name, the angel's words he once had dreamed poured down from heaven's height, and like the host of stars that beamed blessed earth with welcome light.

"This child shall be Emmanuel, not God upon the throne, but God with us, Emmanuel, as close as blood and bone."  The tiny form in Joseph's palms confirmed what he had heard, and from his heart rose hymns and psalms from heaven's human word.

The tools that Joseph laid aside a mob would later lift and use with anger, fear, and price to crucify God's gift.  Let us, O Lord, not only hold the child who's born today, but charged with faith may we be bold to follow in his way.

Merry Christmas! Not much of a Christmas holiday this year as I'm working right through it (12 hour mids). Stuff happens. Anyway while scouring the bowels of Youtube I came across a beautiful version of Oh Come, Oh Come, Emmanuel by The Franz Family. I never heard of them but they are impressive. Plus the gals singing are cute as kittens (and probably still teenagers so behave).

Copy and paste and enjoy. Merry Christmas!

JJ - It is subtle on a number of levels, particularly because they botched the quotes on the real oval office rug trying to attribute a quote to MLK.  But there is no doubt who is responsible for "If You Like Y.."  Not to get all gestalt on this, but they did put out a big plate of cookies to draw the big guy in.  (Maybe Santa was trying to find the one PC in the country that actually could bring up healthcare.gov)

92 I will be so glad when tomorrow is over. I am tired of spending money and wrapping presents. I have to say my holiday shopping was a pleasant surprise this year. I did most of mine online so when I went to the mall I didn't have much left. I got "Merry Christmas-ed" at every store I went to except for one. (pretty sure the gal at the gap hissed at me as I was walking away). My last purchase today will be crab legs for tomorrow.

In some cases competition is good, but I am not a fan of Repubs trying to out-RINO each other.

In most cases, I think politicians are Establishmentarians that came to government wanting to do good and most of them did quite well.

115 "Y'all" is a contraction of "you all."( Hang around southerners long enough and one of them will say it that way out loud when he is applying emphasis.) Thus, the part that has been contracted out is the "ou" from "you." The contraction is "Y'all." Spelling it otherwise marks you as either a Yankee or ignorant, although, if you are a Yankee, you are by definition ignorant, at least as it regards things Southern.

235 Not being backwards compatible with existing games is gonna tamp down sales somewhat. Meh. That's always been the way. NES games weren't compatible with SNES. I think original PlayStation games would play on PS2, but PS3 wouldn't play PS1 or PS2 games. XBox 360 wasn't backward compatible to XBox except for a few games- and those not especially well. I do think it hurts, but I don't think it hurts the way a lot of industry outsiders assume it does- MS and Sony (and, therefore, we) knew that only (well: mostly) Early Adopters were going to buy. I think the real problem is game selection- most of the stuff that's come out that people like was already available on XBox 360 or PS3, the stuff that is "new" has received fairly lackluster reviews. Nobody had a HALO waiting in the wings.

The old stuff is "good enough" syndrome has been tamping down PC sales for years now.   From the 8088 thru about P4, there were compelling seat of the pants felt performance gains with each new generation.  These days not so much.

For general purpose use, a 4-5 year old laptop or PC is often enough.

Regarding Homepath, I can't speak to that program specifically, but it looks an awful lot like the plain old vanilla mortgage I got when we bought our home. Now it's been rumored that we were the last crop of those mortgages (getting in just before Dodd-Frank finally kicked in.) But the basics of our mortgage were is follows: 1) 5% down. 2) 3.5% Interest. 3) No monthly PMI. Now here's how 3 worked. Our lender paid the lump sum PMI and then tacked it on to our mortgage balance, financing it out for 30 years. When you do the totality of the math it comes to like $32/month it added to the mortgage (a far cry from the $150 it would have been had we paid it monthly). Not exactly 0, but pretty darn close. (This means our "APY" was actually 3.67% because you calculate the APY by factoring in the total interest and fees, and this was considered a fee.) It may not be what homepath is doing, but it looks damned similar. We looked into a few bank owned homes during our housing hunt, they were in pretty rough shape, if you're going to lose your home you tend to stop caring for it.

256 Posted by: Purp at December 24, 2013 09:14 AM (70Unk) It also doesn't help that there really haven't been any really interesting games out in a few years. For the most part, an FPS is an FPS. Sure, some "do that" better than others, but they're all basically the same. And every game that comes out (well, mostly) is designed for you to sit and play for hours. Here's the problem- the primary demographic for electronic consoles is 25 - 35. These are people who have the kind of money it takes to be "gamers." But that *also* means they're the kind of people with jobs, and probably spouses and kids (or at least significant-others and kids), and a social circle and such. Kongregate.com has a whole section of "5-minute" games. Consoles need to get back to that idea- give me 5 - 30 minutes of action with a pause (even just a minute or two) where I can save and I'm much more likely to play your game- because I can work it in around my schedule. Then, if I *have* hours to play, I can keep going (because the pause in the action is only a minute or so).

A bit, but I still have my 360 if I want it. Is it a PITA? Perhaps. But I've always considered consoles in each generations silos of sorts. Did I get my value from the 360 so far, yes. Am I ready to buy an Xbox one because I think I'll get the immediate value from it: no. Will I get one in the future, probably. (FWIW, my calculus was the same for the 360, I waited until after Halo 3 came out to get it.) If you're early adapting and not waiting for the price drop, then backwards compatibility probably isn't your primary concern. And yes, I've spent a ton on the Xbox. In fact, I bought a second xbox as part of a Kinect bundle in 2011 and sold my first 360 to my brother for $60.

292 :sigh: Horde, I need to vent. My local city is still bugshit crazy. They can't see the writing on the wall and are still spending money because they have it (ignorant to all the places are here that had money just 5 short years ago and now are draining reserve funds dry.) Worse yet, people are coopting the normal conservative language to argue for more spending. "It's not Government's money it's our money." Well actually, it's neither, you voted for a sales tax, which because of the makeup of the area is largely paid by *non-residents.* So it's money you forcibly took from people to give services to yourself. So it's not government's money this is true, but it's also not YOUR money it's someone else's. And even discounting this epic level of liberal stupid masquerading as conservatism, I only have to go 2 cities over to find a city that did the exact same thing 7 years ago. They were flush with funds then, and boy did the spending flow. Last week however, they voted to pull from the reserve fund for the 3rd year in a row. This is the last time they can do that because the fund is to low. Even if they waive those rules if current projections hold in 3 years they'll be quite literally broke, no reserve fund and too little revenue. But by all means, let's just follow them down this rabbit hole. Fuckers. All over (I shit you not) rear yard trash pickup. We can't get rid of rear yard trash pickup. This country is well and truly fucked.

306 All over (I shit you not) rear yard trash pickup. We can't get rid of rear yard trash pickup. This country is well and truly fucked. What. Like, people can't be bothered to haul their trash to the curb? Or are we talking about dumpsters in alleys behind a row of houses? That said- it is unfortunately the way of the world. It's why taxes MUST be kept low and services kept at the lowest possible level. Because people look at Government spending as though it has no cost to them. They can't (or won't) associate the money the Government spends with money that comes out of their own pockets (or, in this case- the pockets of passers-through). I'm nearly 100% certain that if the city said, "Sure, we'll contract with the garbage company to do rear yard trash pickup. Your water bill (which includes your trash collection fees) will go up by $10 each per month," that these same people would screech that "Government should pay for that."

Which, BTW tells you something. These fuckers would rather keep taxing and spending than walk across the street and take their neighbor's trash out. Da Fuq?! I already decided that in protest I'm going to sign up for rear trash service myself and tell my neighbors to do the same. That sounds weird it really does, but when you listen to the totality of the meetings it's pretty clear, the trash company is teetering on telling the city to go fuck itself anyway, if the number of people demanding rear service increases the contract becomes unviable for him as well (and he'll take his option to leave since we're already in an extension.) It's make it burn by proxy, make the system so unaffordable that the city has no choice but to switch. By the by, savings for switching range from 500k to 700k PER YEAR, which one resident called a "rounding error." WTF? we're only a city of 17,000, (and only 5k single family homes) that's not a rounding error, it's damned significant. In fact it's almost 3% of the yearly budget. That's HUGE!

Of course, it helped that Baryshnikov himself was pretty easy on the eyes, even to a little girl.       And Gelsey Kirkland as Clara was GORGEOUS;   the perfect fairy tale princess.   Too bad her offstage life was such a shambles.

Yeah, that was a good way to spend city funds, rather than, I don't know, building a new reservoir that might actually catch rain water, instead of of the one you have that was built with no survey, no engineering plan, and now only fills up when rain falls on a town a good 20 miles away?

359 Posted by: AllenG (DedicatedTenther) Ah, F It. at December 24, 2013 10:01 AM (PYAXX) One formulation of Kant's Categorical imperative was to never use a person as merely a means. This case gets incredibly close to that area. Does that mean I'd yank life support: no, I'm actually pretty evenly conflicted on this case. Here's the thing though, delaying the mother's death (and passage into the next world) for the sake of the unborn child, seems equally problematic to me. And IMHO, the double effect is squarely in play here. Again, all that puts me at is "jeebus, this is complicated." There are so many competing interests there's no way I could even begin to weigh them at this current level of facts. Hell, I'm not sure I could weigh them with an entire detailed medical file sitting in front of me. But at least that'd be a start. It's one of those rare real life "Trolley Problems."

369 Posted by: tubal the bad at December 24, 2013 10:13 AM (YEQ2h) If the state grants rights (rather than merely protecting rights granted by God) then the state can determine rights. If the state can determine rights, than the state gets to determine who is worthy of them. In which case the state controls you. Plus IIRC, the Moderists were OK with natural rights, it's the post-moderns who are all about legally formulated rights. I'm very happy with my natural rights, it means there is such a thing as a illegitimate state!

385 No doubt this has been pointed out multiple times since Pajamaboy sprung on to the scene, but when Captain Dick Winters of 'Band of Brothers' fame celebrated his 27th birthday he was an executive officer of a Parachute Infantry battalion.  He had gone through Basic Training, OCS, Jump School, was a platoon commander for the jump into Normandy. He assumed command of his company, was promoted to Captain, and jumped again into  the Netherlands, and then became the XO of his battalion.

And then we have Pajamaboy. Words fail.  Major Winters life was extraordinary, in an extraordinary time.  Combat jumps aren't the only way to display manhood and untold numbers of men have done so without wearing the uniform of their country. Responsibility, maturity*, sobriety**, among other traits.  But for sake of all that's holy, a onsey and an ironic quirk of perfectly waxed eyebrows in bemusement are not on that fucking list you pussy-assed hipster.  Get a fucking job that actually does something instead of suckling at the public teat*** by way of your 'non-profit' 'employer'. Asshole.

* Including the CS Lewis way.
** In the 'clear eyed assessment of circumstances' way. Not the other way. Know your audience, kids.

Merry Christmas all y'all!

One more trip to the grocery store  this morning.  Went to the mall last night and searched in vain for affordable  (under $25) women's gloves for my daughter.  It was a horror worse than any zombie flick.

The JCP creatures just drop onto the floor any and all merchandise they  look at but  choose not to buy.  Was informed by a haughty Dillard's  matron  that they don't sell Isotoner gloves.  Like I had asked her did they sell Duck Commander t-shirts.  After reforming my request she did casually wave her hand over to an area where they did sell fine ladies leather gloves.  Three left  and all north of $50.  Fashion gloves, not warmth gloves.  Sears, the bastion of middle class, was eerily empty of shoppers.  No, the bored clerk said, we don't sell ANY ladies gloves here.  None, nada, zip.  Hmmm, there might be a connection if I could just figure it out.

Saw many yutes  with saggin' britches.  Wanted to pants one that was particularly low saggin' and then laugh at the dude saying, "If you kept yer britches pulled up normal like you could catch this  jolly old fat man."

Got home and found everything she wants at a reasonable price on LandsEnd.  Goodby brick-and-mortar mall, forever.

Military jobs especially wouldn't fall into that category- and there are other Fed jobs that are really the authority of the Federal government. Are you kidding? Unless they're going to invite me to be a complete parasite, I cannot afford anything they have to offer. Every spare cent I have goes to paying down my debt in hopes I won't be destroyed when something like an expensive car repair comes along as it inevitably well.

It remains to be seen how the IRS is going to enforce this as there appears to be a great lack of definition there.

Instead of imposing new bullshit on us, it would be better to go to the UN and suggest the rest of the world start paying their fair share for the cost of newly developed drugs that Americans pay excessively for because we're the only nation on the planet that recognizes the need of the companies to recoup their investment and turn a profit while the patent lasts. Without that, all new drug development slows to a crawl.

One of my blood pressure meds is still under patent. It is a significant improvement over what it replaced but costs nearly $80 a month. If the UK and Europe were to pay as we do, my cost would be cut in half as the market would be spread over more double the number of patients. The way we in the US are footing the bill for the rest of the world is one of the severely under-reported stories of the day.

I can only hope I continue to lose weight and eventually no longer need the blood pressure meds.

438 Not sure the EMT's would ask if she had a DNR if her husband was giving her mouth to mouth when they got there. The EMTs wouldn't anyway. The Hospital staff would. But, since he's her Husband, even without her having an advance directive or DNR, normally the Hospital would accept his word.

Merry Christmas to all as it's Christmas Day in Sydney in the land Down Under

It's way past 3am and I can't sleep - this time of the year makes me wish I still had my lovely parents with me

Then again, my son is visiting from interstate, and later today I see my daughter, her hubby and my gorgeous grandson plus my stepdaughter's new son...so all will be good

No heatwave here today - a pleasant 25C forecast

BTW I just love NORADs Santa Tracker - what a great concept!

475 The Muppets Christmas Carol is my favorite.  I first saw it on VHS a looong time ago, and while overall a solid movie, there was a musical scene between Belle and Scrooge that was just awful.  I'd have to fast forward through it every time I watched it.

When we eventually got it on DVD, it had both the theatrical version and an extended version available on the disk.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that the musical number was not part of the theatrical release.  I assume it's in the extended version, but I haven't bothered to check (I'd rather just forget about that song entirely).
