FRIIIIIIDAAAAAAY!

Ken White aka @Popehat on speech and outrage.

Obama's Top 10 Constitutional Violations of 2013.

The academic boycott of Israel continues to go not-so-well for the idiot group that proposed it.

How Obamacare Costs Michigan: among other things, "when Jan. 1 arrives there will actually be less people who have health care coverage than there were when Obamacare was passed." He means "fewer," but you get the point.

Have a great weekend.

8 The first federal hate crime charges on the "knock out game" have been charged against a white man who broke an elderly black man's jaw.  Where are the hate crime charges for the hundreds of "knock out game attacks" by blacks on white people, including ones that have resulted in deaths?   This is why I hate "hate crime" laws.  And it is also not supposed to be filed by the feds unless local authorities are not adequately prosecuting the case.  There is no indication of that here.  Of course we are talking about the corrupt DOJ here.

Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at December 27, 2013 03:04 AM (b/lt+)

34 What they won't mention about the NE ice storm blackouts?

The majority of the problem is that the electrical grid infrastructure in the NE is over loaded out of date and badly in need of repairs.

This has been brought about over the years by NIMBY and eco freaks fighting tooth and nail every upgrade and add on that the electric companies have tried to bring in.

As a result in CT in Stamford a large and fairly modern city in one of the richest counties in the US has more than it's share of blackouts and brown outs due to equipment failure.

And as each year goes by the potential cost of upgrading the equipment rises exponentially.

I live there 18 yrs and at least twice a year we would lose power.

I've been in PA now for 7 yrs and only had one power loss when a lightning strike occurred a block away and blew out a transformer and the top of the pole.

People don't understand that if there isn't extra capacity, then when part of the grid fails, it goes out. With extra capacity, usually rerouting can be done and either there is no outage or the outage is short lived.

(this one here was because it was so close that there was not rerouting possible.)

Vera-Ellen started her career as a Rockette as a teenager, but was fired after two weeks for "being to individualistic." Her career on screen was not as appreciated as Ginger Rogers, Eleanor Powell or Anne Miller, but she was arguably the best overall female dancer of that era. Tragic end for her as well. And she was a staunch Republican to boot.

Tree trimming, more substations for rerouting when lines go down, lines restrung with stronger wire.

Also they have stymied a new high voltage feeder line into the NE for over 15 years because of emf concerns, property values and prices and of course the environment.

When I told her, she said, "I never saw that." I do not think I've watched it in its entirety since it was in the movie theaters. My wife watched it with me, and it scared the shit out of her. In case you haven't seen it in a while, these things were freaky: 1. The description of the world situation at the beginning of the movie 2. The Nicaraguan colonel's order to grab the 4473s out of the sporting goods store 3. The propaganda at the drive-in movie theater reeducation camp is about what you'd expect from the MSM 3a. The soviet soldier's then-hilarious translation of the Arapaho National Forest sign is probably being taught earnestly in more than one university in this country 4. Powers Boothe's description of how the soviets sent advance agents across the southern border as illegals who then infiltrated key military bases and communication/transportation centers

I asked them if they could quickly top the tree, and I would haul off the branches. they wouldn't have had to move the truck. They could just swing the bucket. They said no. They then proceeded to load up and sit on the side of the street for 45 minutes before leaving. Postscript: About 5 months later, that tree rubbed through the insulation and caused the line to break. The power company had to come out and trim the tree and fix the line.

I love White Christmas; it's one of my favorite movies.  Fred Astaire was originally supposed to play the comic Phil Davis - the movie was supposed to be part of an unofficial trilogy consisting of Holiday Inn, Blue Skies and Christmas, but Astaire turned the script down (he also believed he was too old for the role) and it was offered to Donald O'Connor, who had to drop out before shooting began because of serious illness.

I have a nephew who is a UPS manager. While working for UPS is never fun at Christmastime, it was especially bad this year, because they were short-staffed. An ice storm in Texas really threw things off and managers from UPS facilities all over the country were sent to Texas to work as deliverymen for a few weeks. The bad weather in much of the country meant that many more people did their shopping online and UPS wasn't prepared for it. My nephew says everyone has been busting tail nonstop since Thanksgiving. The things I ordered online though Amazon Prime came in 2 days without a glitch - but I didn't wait until the last minute to order them.

I did not know that if a UPS driver ever gets into an accident while making deliveries and it is his fault, he's fired. It doesn't matter how long he's been with the company. UPS works its' employees very hard - but also compensates them very well.

Rosemary Clooney recalled that, although Vera-Ellen was polite to her, the two weren't close during the filming of White Christmas, mainly because Clooney couldn't dance.  But the film was the start of her lifelong friendship with Bing Crosby, who had suggested her for the part of Betty Haynes.  It's uncertai whether Crosby had heard Clooney sing or had merely seen her, but suggested to Paramount that she would make a good partner.

The two would later record an album together, with arrangements by the great Billy May - Fancy Meeting You Here.  I highly recommend it.

108 There's a particular scene in White Christmas that always cracks me up.  Danny Kaye and Vera-Ellen  are discussing  the fact that her older sister won't get involved with any man  because she feels the need to protect her younger sister.

So the comely Ms. Ellen (or however you would  write her name) very strongly starts to suggest that she and Mr. Kaye hook up, so as to give her sister  the freedom to pursue her relationship with Mr. Crosby.

Well, Mr. Kaye is having none of that!  He behaves like someone who has no idea  what to do with a woman... which of course he didn't.

What I'm wondering is, since I'm  sure it was an open secret that Mr. Kaye was gay,  did they have a ball with that scene, or was it an open joke at his expense?  I mean, I'm sure the audience was unaware of it, and since  it was played for laughs, I guess it works.

For me though, I'm watching it and thinking "lady, you're wasting your time!"

>>What they won't mention about the NE ice storm blackouts?

The majority of the problem is that the electrical grid infrastructure in the NE is over loaded out of date and badly in need of repairs.

This has been brought about over the years by NIMBY and eco freaks fighting tooth and nail every upgrade and add on that the electric companies have tried to bring in.

As a result in CT in Stamford a large and fairly modern city in one of the richest counties in the US has more than it's share of blackouts and brown outs due to equipment failure.

And as each year goes by the potential cost of upgrading the equipment rises exponentially.

I live there 18 yrs and at least twice a year we would lose power.
.

.

.We lived in Connecticut for 15 years and power outages were extremely common.  Often times we would get a black out for an hour or so during the day for no apparent reason.  We wouldn't know about them until we got home from work and the clocks on the stove and microwave were blinking.  Very odd and about a weekly occurrence during the summer months.

150 *dances for MP4's amusement* Good morning. My wife lost a diamond out of her engagement ring yesterday. Not that big a deal to me, except The ring was from the 1920s and belonged to my grandmother. She is really upset.Anybody know how much little diamonds go for? Posted by: Herr Morgenholz at December 27, 2013 08:24 AM (rSuZe) How little? Having been through this issue with a ring of my own, I will bet that the setting is coming loose so that will have to be fixed or it will just keep happening. So setting getting fixed and a new chip could be $80. Could be $800. If you don't know a good jeweler, ask around. You should be able to find someone who will do it for a reasonable amount of money. Horde! My day just got a whole lot better since in the bottom of my purse I just found the $20 that I was certain I had lost. It's a Saturnalia miracle!

Yes, it does.  Obviously, the acting art has a higher percentage of gays than other endeavors, but unless the actor's sexuality is an absolute - Rock Hudson's gayness or Lilyan Tashman's lesbianism - then scepticism is always warranted, especially if an author promises "new, shocking revelations."

He said he couldn't even get to my place for a quote until late January and no way he could do an install until the spring. My electrician is the locally certified Generac company. In 2012 he said they did less than 300 generators and in 2013 they did over 2000. The electrical grid in this country is a huge, mostly ignored problem.

Our govt today, and this Administration in particular, interferes with the market so much that companies make decisions with the understanding that Big Brother is watching snd waiting to reward or punished. So imho that's why Robertson's defenders are reacting the way they are and why invoking the First Amendment is not complete bullshit (or sloppy thinking). Free speech IS under attack in this country. All you have to do is look at the IRS scandal. Popehat cones off as chiding and naive. Tree Trimming is sacrilege in CT...  When I go back for Christmas, I'm amazed at how overgrown it is, compared to 90's when I left and even more so than when I was a kid in the 70's.  Look up the old pictures from the 30's, and it is shocking.   Farmland has returned to forest.

The ecoturds have been blocking the highway from Hartford to Providence since the early 70's.  Finally the Feds gave up, changed what parts had been built from I-84 to I-384, and renamed I-86 from Hartford to the Mass-pike in Sturbridge to I-84....

217 Most of the Northeast had no forest in the 19th century. It had all been cut down for heating fuel. Vast parts of CT and Mass were abandoned after the year of No Summer. In colonial times 95% of CT was under cultivation. It was the coming of the automobile to the cities, which put the hay farms out of business, that caused brush growth, reforestation, and the recovery of the white-tailed deer. Other people's financial devastation looks romantic in a Currier & Ives print.

I speak from experience. My grandfather's family "homesteaded" (read "squatted") an abandoned tract in NW CT. He left the hay farm to work as a hardwood lumberjack in Maine. The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

219 MamaAJ,

I'd recommend a yahoogroup called PrepJr. They have some excellent information in the group files and can answer any prep question you might have. Yes, many of the group are Mormons, but anyone can join.
