3 Congress to allow 55 "tax breaks" to expire today.  Judging from this article these are not "tax breaks", they are legitimate tax deductions for business expenses.  Why is it when they talk about some liberal "cause" it is an incentive are a business expense but when you are talking about corporations and small businesses it is a "break".

4 New Boston mayor and police chief clash over arming 33 cops with AR-15 (described stupidly in this article as "high powered rifles").  My question is why are they paying $2500 a piece for these things?  The Army only pays about $70 for theirs.  And what is the problem with arming the cops with these?  Hell security guards at some places I know are armed with them.  But hey, it's Boston.

19 The thing that aggravates the crap out of me about this light bulb bull shit is that it is all just another huge scam.  Doing away with all the incandescent light bulbs will not save enough electricity to run one 50 hp motor at one factory for one day.


All these so-called savings have to assume that everyone burns every light bulb in their house 24/7 all year.



But this reminds me of another stupid piece of propaganda I heard on the radio news yesterday.  Some green outfit was reporting that electrical usage in the country has been consistently dropping the past few years due to "higher energy efficiency" in home appliances.   I wanted to throw shit at the radio.  Yes, electricity usage is dropping, but only because the entire economy is in the shitter.

True, and I was only in the States for one New Years Eve.  All the rest of the time I was over in WESPAC except when I was going to schools.  And there were no NCO clubs at the places I went to school at.  In MD they did have the Aberdeen Proving Grounds NCO club which was OK but I wasn't there for NYE.

While Hollywood legend credits Erich von Stroheim for the bits of fetishism in Sunset Boulevard*, director Billy Wilder himself introduced one bit of perversion that generally goes unrecognized.

 

If youÂ’ve seen the movie, you recall that when William Holden approaches the apparently deserted Desmond mansion, he is mistaken for an emissary from the local funeral parlor.  He is led into an adjoining room, where, under a silken cloth, is the body of a chimpanzee.  The chimp is supposed to have been Norma DesmondÂ’s pet – although the word is never spoken in the film – and so the scene is merely remembered as a bit of creepiness reflecting NormaÂ’s own warped existence.

 

Wilder, however, had other ideas.  A subtle clue is found in NormaÂ’s detailing of the apeÂ’s pleasures: “He always liked fires and poking at them with a stick.”.  But the director made it more obvious during the filming of the scene.  “Here comes your boyfriend, Norma,” he laughed as the ape was wheeled in by a stagehand.  After one take, when the chimpÂ’s arm dropped before it was supposed to, Wilder cracked, “Look at him, Gloria, you wore him out.”

 

And eventually, Wilder gave voice to the unspeakable.  “Remember, Gloria,” he instructed Swanson before a take, “Norma was fucking the monkey.”

 

A horrified Swanson rushed off the set, only to return when she realized Sunset was the movie that would resurrect her dead-end of a career.  But she never truly forgave Wilder his joke.

78 Good Morning, Sven, My father taught me to be aware of all cars around me when he took me out to help me learn to drive. I always glance in rear view mirror to see them. It was in the early 80s & I always had to schlep everyone around. Me & a friend went to a New Years party & we were on Tobin Bridge in way home. I saw the car behind be start to spin out & got out of the way. I probably saved us from being in serious accident. Since then I would rather stay home because people are too drunk to drive or it is Amateur night for people behind the wheel. I was planning to go to a party tonight, but I'm still sick from December 13. I felt better enough to go to work everyday last week, but I had pains when I took a deep breath. Now it's a head & chest cold. I'm working from here after in take a nap.

 I stocked up at the local HomeDepot a couple days ago, they are having a great sale on them.   Who wants to pay $15+ for an LED bulb when I could buy 48 incandescent bulbs for the same price?

It's minus 2 here right now.  Heat is a useful byproduct of something I need. During the summer,  I don't use as much light because...wait for it... the sun is out longer and the days are warmer.

It is colder than hell here in Chi and the driving conditions are bad and are expected to worsen as the day progresses. Worried about my daughter and her friends tonight. I know we have car experts here...wonder if anyone can explain this: yesterday I took my 12-yr-old car on a quick, there and back errand in the a.m. Went out at about 2 p.m. to go the store, turned the key, and... nothing. Ok. Dead battery, I think. Old car, old battery, super cold, not a surprise. Later, I go out to the garage thinking I would put it in neutral and get my son to help me roll it into the driveway so at least my husband could get his car in the garage. So I do that, turn key, press brake, put in neutral, all still dead. Got out, rocked the car back and forth and got it to roll a few inches to prove to myself that between the two of us we could handle this. Went around to go inside and call the boy, when I notice suddenly the panel is lit up. Get in, turn key in ignition, and voila, engine turns over no problem. What just happened? Sorry such a long, stupid story, but I was gobsmacked. TIA.

If you use this single LED bulb 3 hours a day continuously for a year it will take you over 2 years before you realize any savings based on todays utility prices. If you switch out all of your incandescent bulbs for LED and use them as most people do it will take 25 - 30 years before you have amortized the cost of the bulbs. So you can look at it as a tax for when ever the government forces you to pay more money it's a tax. Another gift from them GOP and the bush family.

After you clean the cable and battery see if wiggling the cable interrupts the current. Just leave the engine off and use the headlights or whatever to test the connection.

The solenoid can become intermittent, but it should only affect the starter itself.  Panel lights, head lights etc. should still work with a solenoid problem.  I had a truck that needed to have its solenoid whacked with a hammer every now and again.  Battery corrosion will exhibit similar symptoms, but usually the solenoid will click or chatter, but not engage the starter.  Lights and other low amperage circuits may still seem to work with battery corrosion, but usually the starter will not.  Battery corrosion is the easiest thing to check first.

I am inclined to agree with others upthread that this is likely loose battery and/or ground connections. Also, "old battery", as Gem said, in seriously cold weather, means you better be ready for a long walk or a long wait. Nothing beats the stuffing out of a car battery like freezing temperatures. That's on the top ten list of winterization tips.

When you go to buy that new battery, be ready for sticker shock. Another item where thanks to green ecoholic stupidity, prices have been rising far faster than the allegedly "low" rate of inflation.

My first stop would be the ground (-) battery cable. Tighten, and check for corrosion. Then do the same with the "hot" (+) cable.

I've had similar problems twice over the years. First time was a failed ground cable on a 15 year-old car. Second time, the connection was simply loose. Miraculous repair with a wrench.

But hey, it's a Toyota. Japanese electricity may not be the same as American, British or French electricity.

I am still gobsmacked at the reports that Prince Bandar (now running Saudi intelligence) went to Moscow to try to muscle Putin out of supporting Syria as a client regime, and while there, remarked casually that "we [the Saudis] control" the Chechen militants who have caused so much trouble for Russia in recent years.

Bandar basically said, get with the program on Syria and we'll muzzle our muzzies and make sure that the Sochi Olympics come off safely with no terror incidents.

Needless to say, this is NOT A GOOD THING TO SAY to a cold-eyed, stone-hearted former KGB officer like Putin. This is ESPECIALLY not a good thing to have said when there have been multiple lethal terror incidents which killed Russian nationals, as just happened.

Because even if those terror attacks were not by groups under Saudi control, the assumption in the Kremlin will of course be that they were, and that the attacks are payback for Putin's intransigence in continuing to support Assad.

Culture is politics. If a person does not care for the prevailing culure and political environment in which they reside, they should move to a more palitable locale.

 

If moving is not an option, for whatever reason, then that person should stop being the sheep among wolves, and DO something to change the situation. This may mean sacrificing some comfort, fortune, or even well being.

I was in high school, and this was my intro to these great comedies. Sat up and watched them with my dad. Good memories

Did the "business girls" still carry health cards stamped by the base medics in 1990 or had they moved on to a more advanced system by then?

 

Down in Kunsan the bar mommasans would hang on to them and you could see it if you asked.  Most were good about not letting the girls work if they caught something.You could see the girls lining up for their STD checks every month at the local clinic.  In Kunsan, then, the only time you got concerned about getting the clap or something was when a TDY returned from the Philippines. You just stayed away from the girls for a couple weeks and things returned to normal. Ironically, things have now changed greatly. At most bases now the girls can't dance at the bars and GIs get Art. 15s for taking one out. I think I remember reading that thy can get in trouble for buying a juicy now. I've long since retired but I would not make a career of it again they way things are going.

If it was able to start without struggling once the connectivity restored itself, then the battery just may be fine. If you do get a new battery, take your old one in with you. I don't know how it works where you live, but around here (and I think it might be a federal reg) we have to put a deposit down on returning the old battery. Also, stores like Auto Zone or Advance Auto Parts will change it out for you in the parking lot. Just tip the kid that does it for you.

They started that shit when I was at Kunsan in '01. We had to take human trafficking training. Anyone caught paying a barfine got an automatic Article 15.

 

The squadron hooches started doing good business though. Not much reason to go to A-Town unless you were old enough to keep your wits about you.

About the mid 90s, the philipinas started coming to A Town as well as a few Russian girls. Korean girls actually became a minority in their own bar district. They first instituted a curfew again in 97 or 98 at the Kun. Osan had one since 95 when a couple GIs died in different incidents but both alcohol related. I lived outside A Town and had a POV so I got around most of the bullshit. The really bad thing about this is you have a couple thousand testosterone filled GIs and no place to relieve it.  I never had the slightest interest in most of the beauty queens at the Kun. We used to joke that they took their ugly papers away at LAX and gave them back when they returned.

I had a house in A-Town (just a block to the left of the big arch), and it was a sweet setup. I worked swing shift, and by the time I got home, I had a friendly "houseguest" who got off of her shift when her club shutdown for the night.

 

I enjoyed all three flavors. And not a penny was spent. Other than booze and food. They did all the cooking and kept me happy. Best damned tour I ever had.

I, for one, am very grateful that the most talented president evah (John McVain) is on a long vacation - it's been nice not hearing his fucking voice every day.

 

I plan on buying a new washing machine at Home Depot today.  It will not be energy efficient, my toast to the California greenies who have destroyed this once great state.  I will also be picking up some incandescents, my last act of "fuck you" for the year.

The stats show that the biggest referrer to my site in 2013 was Ace. Since this is practically the only place I plug my stuff, not a big surprise. I hope there aren't too many followed my links and got disappointed, and that some got a smile or something now & then. 338 The first time I went to Kunsan, A Town was for Americans only. Unescorted Korean men were told to leave. I lived in a two room hooch down the ally before the big arch right by where it curved to go to Mimyon. The second time I lived in Mimyon and the big rice paddy was right across the street before the highway to Kunsan City. I loved it there and would drive to Osan or Seoul for the weekends. I also married a Korean and we were together for 22 years before she passed last February. Juvats Rule!!
