— Gabriel Malor Happy Wednesday.
I didn't watch any of the speeches last night, but I'm told Sen. Rubio's was good. Here's the text. The chattering class appears to be spending all its time this morning poring over Obama's speech and, since I don't give a damn, that's the only link you're getting.

Heat waves, droughts, wildfires, and floods – all are now more frequent and intense. We can choose to believe that Superstorm Sandy, and the most severe drought in decades, and the worst wildfires some states have ever seen were all just a freak coincidence. Or we can choose to believe in the overwhelming judgment of science – and act before it’s too late."

Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Yesterday Hrothgar wanted to hear about Wallace Beery, so here’s a little bit on the Missouri-born actor:
Beery (it was his real name) found his greatest fame playing palookas-with-a-heart-of-gold characters in such films as Min and Bill, The Champ and Tugboat Annie, even assaying more complex characters as Long John Silver in Treasure Island and General-Director Preysing in Grand Hotel*
During his high period at MGM in the 1930s, he was one of the studio’s top box office draws, a bottom-line fact which rendered his personal life as an abusive, drunken brawler moot. Not just a scene-stealer, he was an actual thief as well, repeatedly taking props, clothing and furniture from the sets of any movie he worked on, an action which caused at least one Metro head to sigh, “he’s a son of a bitch, but he’s our son of a bitch.”
This “our son of a bitch" attitude was starkly illustrated in 1937, when MGM spirited Beery out of the country so that he couldn’t be arrested, subpoenaed or even questioned about the death of former Three Stooges frontman Ted Healy, who was beaten to death outside of the Trocadero nightclub. For years, it was presumed that the belligerent Healy had insulted some anonymous college students outside the Troc and been beaten for his pains; it wasn’t until much later that it was revealed that it had been Beery, along with Albert “Cubby” Broccoli** and gangster Pat DiCicco who had killed Healy during a drunken brawl.
But that penchant for violence would have come as no surprise to Gloria Swanson. The two of them had met on the lot of the Keystone studio, where a young Beery was finding fame in a series of comic shorts where he played a gangling, rough-hewn Swedish maid of all work named “Sweedie.” The petite, lovely Swanson was an ill-fit at the knockabout studio, and Beery was instantly attracted to her luminous beauty. He wooed and courted her insistently until their marriage in 1918.
But Beery had already shown a darker side; when Swanson became pregnant at 16, he forced her to abort the child. Then, once the ring was on her finger the next year, Beery’s sour attitude towards Swanson – exacerbated because she was making more money than he - turned rancid. As she told it in her autobiography Swanson on Swanson, on their wedding night, Beery hustled Swanson’s mother out of the house they shared with some weak excuse; locking the bedroom door, he proceeded to rape Swanson. From that point, Swanson’s life with Beery was a round of mental, physical and sexual abuse until they divorced two years later.
In the 1940s, Beery’s box-office appeal began to slip; although none of his movies lost money, it was clear that his appeal was fading. His last movie was 1949s Big Jack, where he co-starred with old partner Marjorie “Ma Kettle” Main. He died on April 15 of that year.
*Beery was one of the few who didnÂ’t attempt a German accent in the film; he merely roughened his already deep voice.
**later producer of the Bond films.

Yeah, Swanson had bad luck with marriage and bad judgement with men. In her defense, however, she was one of the biggest movie stars of the 1920s - I'll tell you a story about her second marriage one day and the hysteria that followed - so unless you were a man with supreme self-confidence and brass balls, being "Mr Swanson" was hard to swallow.
That rat bastard Kennedy's another story.

MPPPP, I assume you have a good Bette Davis story or two?
I'm sure you heard my best one, but I'll tell it again: Davis was a hostess at the Hollywood Canteen during WWII and had a reputation for taking the hunkiest serviceman home with her each night. A radio reporter caught up with one khaki-clad gent outside the Canteen and asked him, "Hoping to see some stars tonight?"
"Yup," the soldier replied. "Bette Davis."
"Oh, she's your favorite?"
"Nope," the soldier finished. "I just hear she screws like a mink!"

Good, I'm glad. I'm almost never on the ONT, but I was sending prayers his way.
Icedog, here's another Davis story: on the first day of shooting All About Eve, Celeste Holm saw Davis sitting off to the side. She walked up to her and said, "Good morning, Miss Davis."
Davis looked up at Holm with those large sloe eyes. "Oh, shit," she rasped. "Good manners."
As Holm later told it, "I turned around and walked away. And I never spoke a word to her again."

"Cardinal Peter Turkson, a 64-year-old Ghanaian prelate, is the bookmaker's early favourite to succeed Pope Benedict XVI." -- The Telegraph
Turkson is reputed to have led the Vatican's announcement last year advancing the case for a single global bank. Imo, hardly helpful to local grassroots entrepreneurs, as the current credit unions provide responsive services to local individuals without the "need" of global banking authoritarian interventionism, overseeing who gets what, according to whatever political agenda, particularly the influence of "social justice". That American trend made Obama POTUS, gifting his agenda into law. So how goes Rome, "needing" its Southern Hemisphere membership financially/politically?
Meanwhile, watch the media obsess over the typical social conservative sexual role issues per candidate towards next month's new Pope election.

Meh.
SARS was over-blown. I figure this is, too. It's a respiratory disease; like all such diseases, it'll kill the old, the young, and the poor-in-health.
Not that I'm okay with the death part, that sucks beyond measure, but a) you have to die of something (I'm hoping for too much Jama-haran) and b) I think we've become a little over-sensitized to these kinds of things because we've knocked most of the fatal respiratory diseases out of the 1st world (or we think we have).
But we still have some of them. RSV kills infants every year, so does Whooping Cough. Pneumonia kills old people, or people who are already sick otherwise, all the time too. Same for the Flu and West-Nile.
It sucks, and it would be nice if it didn't happen. But when you look at HOW MANY Brits (in their armed forces, if nothing else) have been to the ME (not to mention there are no reported cases in the US- and we have even more people over there), I'm thinking we're not exactly in line for the next great pandemic.

I know you guys probably beat this to death in the ONT, but I'm still seething over the proposed increase in the minimum wage. People in low-skilled, entry-level jobs are going to get an almost 20% raise in pay not because of merit, but because TFG said so.
Minimum wage jobs were never meant to be a family's primary source of income. The only reason it is now because they're the only jobs left. Thanks, TFG!

First, it has to pass congress. Okay, that's probably a given.
Then, it goes into effect- at which point the people in those "low-skilled, entry-level jobs" get kicked to the curb as quickly as possible, so that restaurants, grocery stores, and other such places don't have to jack all their prices (as high) and still don't hurt their bottom line (as much).
Increasing the minimum wage is a good way to a) spark inflation while b) increasing unemployment.
Of course, with TFG, that could be exactly the point.

I think the snark factor is why they brought Brian Estrich on- but he's really just annoying.

So the cost of everything is going to go up...but if you're not making under $9/hr, your wages aren't.
It's not just bad for the people who want an entry-level job so they can move up the ladder or off welfare, it's bad for everyone who works for wages.

It's the old argument (that Democrats never answer): "If raising the minimum wage really doesn't hurt business, and really does 'help people,' why not raise it to $15/hr? 20? 100?"
Of course, the answer is that it does hurt business (they'll never admit that), and they've just decided that no one needs those icky profits, and our economy should run on "from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs."

Not a bad plan. Get some case worker who knows the system and play on the scenario that you're all fucked up right now. You might be able to get SS disability for depression. Use the benefits that they have for education, because they're better than for simply unemployed.

Here's a question.
How long before Cali's fiscal woes force it to start selling off bits and pieces of itself to other states? I'm only partially joking, btw. As far as the prigs in CA are concerned the only places that matter are LA and its immediate vicinity, San Fran, and maybe Sacramento. I can see them willingly selling off the rest of their land to other states and just keeping one long, contiguous strip along the coast to connect together their havens of leftist bigotry. How hilarious would that be? Areas of CA's rich farmland that have been left fallow and unworked for years because of crushing regulation and taxes suddenly springing back to life as other, less fucked up states take charge.
Hell, if we had enough money we could buy a chunk of CA, name it "Moron Nation," and BOOM. Instant awesome.

Nope. They simply ignore that which does not fit their preconceived notions. It was ok, for instance, for a group of people to wear t-shirts emblazoned with the word 'cunt' to SP rallies. The left in general refused to talk about it, report it, and in 99/100 cases, even refused to condemn it.
When I was working in White Plains, there was a woman that was yucking it up one night about how SP said she could see Russia from her house. I corrected her, told her that was from an SNL skit, and even emailed her a link to the video clip. A week later, the woman was yucking it up about how SP said she could see Russia from her house.
They truly believe they're entitled to their own facts, and beating them over the heads with their obvious racism, misogyny, and bigotry is like trying to teach math to a pig....it wastes your time, and only annoys the pig.

"...use anything they offer..."
Forget "anything they offer". You've got to get in there and demand everything they've got and more. Tell them you want a big titted nurse to come over and give you a sponge bath every day. This is you're money, so let them know you want some back now.
For the SS disability, if you happen to have a police report that says they found you hanging around from a chandelier, you go right the front of the line.
There are programs in place that aren't against conservative principles. They are there to help people at times in their lives when they need help. We don't begrudge helping people, we just think there are a lot of people who use it that aren't really in need.
You, even though you deny it, need the help. Take it.

Fucking don't.
"Racist" has a definition. It means you. You can't "turn" that "back." You have no power to.
All you can do by condemning people with "racist" is give yourself a habit of condemning people with "racist." Whose habit is that?
Is it yours? Do you want it? Why? What for?
Who are you going to use "racist" against, when the actual functioning definition of the word--the only one with any real-world credibility--is people like you?
You'll use it on people like you--and you'll become someone else.
John McCain, for example.

I'm not sure where it's available, but if you ever get a chance, watch the documentary "Ernest Borgnine on the Bus". It came out probably 15 years ago and follows Ernest and his son on a roadtrip. Really entertaining and great insight into a great guy.

I would of watched Rand Paul's if it was on anywhere. What little I do know is how the overton window has slid left again. From the Libertarians being the radicals to now the Tea Party.
