— Gabriel Malor Happy Thursday.
The DOD's new medal for cyber and drone warfare is getting a fair bit of scrutiny.
Sen. Graham's Hatch-like reinvention for his reelection campaign next year is well underway.
Rep. Justin Amash, the guy who Speaker Boehner kicked off the Budget Committee for being a jerk, ran to Buzzfeed yesterday to unload on the GOP for trying to pin the sequester idea on President Obama. Then he took to Twitter to accuse "most ppl in DC" of playing "petty partisan battles" with no attempt at "legislating or persuading." Pot, kettle, Congressman.

Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. I was asked for a Mickey Rooney story the other day, so here we go:
Like most American men of the 30s and 40s, the former Joe Yule, Jr., was a fan of Clark Gable. Of course, as a fellow actor on the MGM lot, Rooney got to see Gable up close and in person much more than other people and was able to make a close study of the Gable persona. A notorious womanizer even at that age (Ava Gardner was his biggest, but far from only, conquest), Rooney began imitating the Gable swagger in order to help him get women. Not only that, he also copied Gable’s half-cocked smile and Gable’s clothing. If Clark wore a certain hat, so did Mickey. Gable smoked a pipe – so did Rooney.
Gable was amused by the imitation; one day, while watching a nearly-twin Rooney saunter by, Gable waved and then whispered to friends standing nearby, “One of these days I’ll really throw him for a loop – I’ll start wearing a sarong!”
Rooney was married eight times, not counting the many affairs he had with co-stars, starlets and civilians.* During the filming of Baby Face Nelson, he became close friends with co-star Carolyn Jones (the future Morticia Addams). One afternoon between takes, Rooney talked about the women he had wooed and lost: “I buy them shoes, and the next thing you know, they put them on and walk away from me.”
Hope you all have a wonderful day.
*The one woman he never had an affair with was Judy Garland. Rumor has it that he did once try to bed her, but never followed through, saying that it would have been like doing it with his sister.

My wife wants flowers on VDay, so off to the florist I go. Except, unlike most women, or at least the perception most men have of most women, my wife hates roses and wants daisies. Daisies are cheap. I wonder if most women really do want roses or just get them because that's what's expected.

TCM showed in the early hours this morning a movie called 'Susan Slept Here.' Could not sleep nor could I write. So I watched TCM and was suprised at what a rom-com gem this movie was.
Dick Powell plays this screenwriter trying to write his next success and is in a dry patch. So its Christmas Eve and cop buddies decide to drop off a bundle of inspiration, namely Debbie Reynolds as a 17 yr old who should be heading to Juvie. They really don't want to do that so bring her over to Powell's pad. Just to baby sit over night and give him inspiration. Well one things leads to another, including Powell's fiancee, played by Anne Francis, talking to the juvie... Taschlin, who had earlier made cartoons, directed this movie.
Anne Francis as Isabelle 'the baby faced killer' was just wow. She nailed the peroxide blonde gold digger with the killer blue stare role. And Debbie was pure comedy as she watched and reacted to the home movies of Powell and Francis, Powell's character had run off to Big Bear with his secretary to write, leaving Debbie being chaperoned by Powell's old Navy commanding officer who is now his flunky.
Great movie. I laughed and howled at it. Thinking of getting it on DVD.

Yes, Anna, Susan is an underappreciated movie. It's probably Tashlin's best, IMO - frankly, The Girl Can't Help It and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? are little more than extended dirty jokes - and Debbie Reynolds is very bunk-worthy, especially at the end.
BTW, did you know that Dick Powell's house was used as the house in the TV series Hart to Hart?

I think the best part about 'Susan Slept Here' is how the characters all change and grow. Even as the laugh riot is happening. And the ending was just perfect. Virgil looking like he is finally going to score with the sultry brunette with the come hither prowl... and he has to report in that night at San Diego.

I vaguely recall some scandal connected to Tax Masters but can't remember the details. I wonder if the new lot is really the old lot with a new name.

"My wife wants flowers on VDay, so off to the florist I go."
After giving my wife a florist shop for Valentine's Day 15 years ago, I've got a bit of insight into this whole flower thing.
The big problem now for people buying flowers is overseas phone banks. A normal customer will want to send flowers to someone in a different town, so they get on the internet and search "flowers" and the town of the recipient. New programs take the town name and attach it to the word "Florist" and provide an 800 number connected to Malasia.
The phone bank takes the order posing as a local florist. They skim 30% off the top and send an order to an actual local florist. The customer receives an arrangement smaller than what they paid would justify and they end up complaining to the local florist.
Of course, the phone bank operators don't give a shit. They've got your money so everything is good with them.
If the florist you're dealing with doesn't list a physical address where you think you're sending flowers, keep looking.

Spouse's NCOiC went to the mattresses on several occasions...she pretty much singlehandedly thwarted 10th MTN trying not to give CABs for FOB attacks by indirect fire....
10th MTN invented language in the CAB requirements that subject had to have been in point fire, Sgt and Maj argued it to the Corps level and won.

Not only is he a RINO, but he is a lying RINO as well.
In his book The Price of Politics, the reporter who gained fame from the Watergate scandal outlined that it was White House Office of Management Director Jack Lew and Legislative Affairs Director Rob Nabors who took the sequestration proposal to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid. They also presented it to House Republicans.

Jesus.
He "spared" everybody who's not on his list...and most of the people on his list.
So, he meant his list. Workplace Shooting Guy almost always does, whether his list is on paper or in his head. The normal pattern is, they go to shoot up the assholes at work, shoot nobody else on the way there, then they shoot the assholes, then...nothing, usually. They frequently sit around and wait for the cops. We'll never know, but this character seems to have done a version of that. He started his list, fucked up, then did nothing, right down the damn street from the cops. For days! ...Apparently.
"Compassion." Hey! That's precisely what you racists! are always said not to have. But the specific contrast being pointed to is between this character and other recent shooters, who've been (understood as) crazy white People Like You. Like in that Chris Rock joke. HEY REMEMBER DAT
The idea that all white people (who aren't famous) are soulless monsters who all need to die (self-defense!) is pervasive among black people.
Pervasive.

Brown's attitude is a sad relic from the heyday of California in the last century.
It really was the golden state.
It saddens me, because I lived there when it was an amazing place. I had always hoped to retire to Northern California. But now? Not a chance.

It really was the golden state.
It's really amazing to me when I actually stop to think just how fast California has declined.
It took 50 - 60 years of Democrat mismanagement to turn Michigan (and Detroit, specifically) into the dumps they are. California was almost conservative-ish just 30 - 40 years ago.
They voted for Ronald Reagan both times, didn't they? (I was not quite 1 when Reagan was first elected, and 4 the second time).
