— Gabriel Malor Happy Friday.
The NYTimes and green automaker Tesla are in a bitchfight over a test drive utilizing Tesla's East Coast charging stations. NYTimes' reporter says the car broke down and cites misleading info from Tesla as well as unexpectedly cold temperatures. Tesla says the reporter set out to sabotage the test drive. Root for injuries.
A meteor strike in Chelyabinsk, Russia, caused about 400 injuries. The second video here demonstrates how people had plenty of time to rush to look at the phenomenon out the windows only to have the windows shatter in their faces.
Have a good long weekend.

Did they actually get an SA-10 to fire? Was the crew sober? Do we care?
The line of debris could have taken more chunks over British Columbia, just north of the US-Canadian border. If travelling eastward from the Ural site. Until it crosses the Pacific there are no really major areas to notice any more booms.

Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes and fellow subjects of Alextopia (all hail to Her Imperial Stompyness). Thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic. And thanks to all of you who’ve bought a copy or downloaded my book, The Director’s Cut: A Theda Bara Mystery. I do hope you’ve enjoyed it, and if you have, would be very grateful for a small review, either on your own blogs (which leaves out Allen G) or on Amazon.
HereÂ’s a quick story to go with your morning java:
In the first rush of talking pictures, Hollywood scoured the Broadway stages and almost anyone, from leading man to chorus girl, could be snapped up if they were deemed able to “talk.”
Among that first wave were the “First Couple of the Stage,” Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne. Both vain and self-centered, they were concerned that their first screen test show them at their best, and Lunt was understandably nervous when his wife returned from seeing the rushes. “How was I?” he asked.
“You were wonderful, of course, darling,” Fontanne answered. “You’ll have to change your makeup – you looked like you hadn’t any lips – but me! Oh, Alfred, it was awful! My makeup was all smeary, my hair was a mess, my mouth was flapping and my hands looked like blocks of wood waving in the air! I look like a scarecrow on the screen! Oh, darling, what will I do?”
Lunt, who had been closely watching his wife all through this, narrowed his eyes, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. Finally, he spoke.
“No lips, eh?”
I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. For my fellow NE morons, letÂ’s hope the weekend storm fizzles out before it gets to us. IÂ’ll see you all on Monday with another story.

LOL MPPP. "No lips, eh?" Lunt was Canadian?
LOL, Anna!
The Lunts liked to one-up each other on stage. A story I heard tells that, during one show, an on-set telephone began ringing by mistake. Lunt turned to Fontanne and smirked, "You'd better answer that."
Fontanne picked up the phone. "Yes?" Then she turned to Lunt. "It's for you, dear," she smiled, and walked off the stage.

That article and the bitchfest after proves why electric cars simply are not ready for real world usage. It gets cold out. People need to run other errands on trips. People get caught in traffic. What would have happened if the driver got a call that a family member was ill and he had to get to a hospital where no chargers were located? Hell, if that had been a gas powered vehicle that ran out of gas, when the tow guy showed up he would have put in a gallon or two and the guy could have then driven to a nearby gas station to fill up. Not to mention that the refueling would have taken a few minutes to full, not an hour to maybe 60%.
Right now, all electric vehicles are toys, not practical usage vehicles.

I'm sorry, but my atlas shows Somali in, of all places, AFRICA. So since they're muzzies they don't qualify to be african Americans? What exactly qualifies one to be an AA then? Can I claim to be 1/64th then with no qualifications needed?

When I was stationed in Italy, we would often have local crimes reported in the Stars and Stripes. And occasionally the perp would be described as an African American from northern Africa.
I keep thinking that in order to be an African American, you need to be able to trace your lineage to the African continent. And be an American.
Of course, this presented an issue for a friend of mine. Born on a US Military base, on the African continent, and being a US citizen. As both parents were white, apparently he could not self identify as an African American.

The Lunt-Fontanne opened in 1910 as the Globe, and in the 30s was turned into a movie theater. When it was converted back in the 50s, it was named for Alfred and Lynne in honor of all their contributions to stage arts (despite my stories, they were a devoted couple and were great champions of youg actors and playwrights).
I saw Titanic, the musical, there when it ran in 1997.

On the other hand, battery tech. is notoriously not advancing as fast as these companies would have you believe, and further, did he actually need to have the car towed? Because if he did when it died, it seems to me that Tesla is the one lying. The fact of the matter is he could not drive the car in a normal manner and make it to his destination on a cold day, because of the cold.
Not to mention that, because the heater in that thing runs entirely off the battery, he had to freeze himself to get as far as he did by turning off the heat, in the middle of winter.

If you go to the JPL risk page you will note that the scientists there say that anything up to 50 meters in diameter "is too small to cause damage on the ground" - what a crock. A 50 meter diameter asteroid would weigh about 150,000 tons - at a velocity of 20 Km/sec (average collision speed) it would be the equivalent of about a 7 megaton H-bomb. That is where JPL starts talking about "damage on the ground" . Seven megatons would wipe out most any city on the planet - the heat alone would give 3rd degree burns to anyone exposed to it out to a range of about 6 miles. Surely the government wouldn't be lying to us about the actual danger of impact events could it?

No case for Defamation, that's true.
But someone crunched the numbers on that nice little data dump, and the reporter's version of events actually comes a lot closer to what the logs show than what Tesla is saying.

Which might also be a reason that the reporter didn't let the the battery fully discharge (which is Tesla's claim regarding him getting the tow- that he still had X miles of range left).
Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) Channelling Breitbart at February 15, 2013 04:12 AM (8y9MW)
The reporter asked him about the new Honda hybrid which had been on sale in SC for two years but had only sold two units. He said even then that due to the expense of the car it could not be cost-justified until gasoline reached $5/gal.
The Tesla is even worse in that department and it appears that it is about as reliable as a first generation Hyundai.

You're welcome, Nighthawk, and thank you very much for the compliment. I don't know any Myrna Loy off the top of my head, but here's a Robinson:
Many people donÂ’t know that Robinson didnÂ’t like guns, which is ironic, considering his screen reputation. During the filming of Little Caesar, every time he had to shoot, he would wince and scrunch up his eyes. At last, director Mervyn LeRoy (a very underappreciated director, IMO) had to tape RobinsonÂ’s eyelids open for any scene where he shot a gun. And yes, he was quite different from his on-screen persona, a very cultured polyglot whose hobby was collecting fine art, much like Vincent Price.
IÂ’ll give you a Myrna Loy story or two on Monday.

From the monroecounty .gov website:
"New York State’s new gun law (NY SAFE Act) includes the ability for pistol permit holders to request that their information be kept private and confidential by completing and submitting a State Police “Opt-Out” form.
The New York State Police has stated that the “Opt-Out” form would be created and made available by February 15th. In preparation of this and in an effort to provide this new form as quickly and conveniently as possible for our customers, we are encouraging all Monroe County Pistol Permit Holders to submit your current e-mail address to our "Opt-Out" Form Registry. When this form is made available, we will send you an electronic version of the form so you can complete and return it to the County Clerk’s Office.
It is important to note that, according to the NY SAFE Act, Pistol Permit holders will have 60 days after the forms are made available by the State Police to submit completed forms to the ClerksÂ’ Office. Again, we have been informed that the form will be made available by February 15th."
So yes, everyone in NYS should opt-out, I guess. Of course that gives them a nice little list if they didn't have one already.

Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at February 15, 2013 04:17 AM (GsoHv)
And Musk was also caught lying. That is: what HE said the data showed (also including speed, range, etc.) was not what the data showed. The data conformed more closely (which is not the same as "matching") what the NYT Reporter said.
Go read that link, it breaks it down in pretty good detail.
I should also point out that your speedometer lies to you. It can be off by as much as (IIRC) 7 miles an hour. So he may have been saying what speed the speedometer was telling him, while the actual logs (based on GPS data, which the speedometer might not have) show a different rate of speed.

Teslas were never meant for people who drive to work. These are cars designed for going to brunch from your Malibu beach house.
No one follows a snow plow in a Ferrari to punch in by 7am. Same with a Tesla, you just don't expect it to do what a real car can do.

No, I don't just believe the NYT. I do believe the data- which shows that the reporter was wrong, but a) not that he was lying and b) his account was closer to the truth than Musk's.
Personally I'm taking the stance on this that I do with the Syria conflict- let's arm both sides. But just because someone dumps some fancy graphs and says, "These show he was lying!" doesn't mean the graphs actually show the other guy was lying.

Pre-xactly.
Teslas were never meant for people who drive to work. These are cars designed for going to brunch from your Malibu beach house.
Exactly incorrect, with the Model-S. You're right about the Tesla Roadster, but the Model-S is supposed to be their entry into the "Family Sedan" market. They're expecting to sell to CEOs to drive in to work to impress potential customers/partners.
So, no, you may not be punching in at 7, but you expect to make it to and from work.

I wonder if the teacher encouraged/discouraged the window viewing.
Speaking of deaths at school, getting away from windows for safety still applies in the more recent application if given a school shooter taking aim, though huddling under one's desk once a shooter's in the room is dubious as a safety measure.
At what point will economical windows generally consist of a more shatterproof material? Do clear plastics amalgamate with glass, improve insulation as well?

" I do believe the data- which shows that the reporter was wrong, but a) not that he was lying and b) his account was closer to the truth than Musk's."
It is crystal clear from the data that if the reporter isn't lying, he is completely devoid of any common sense. No one, even a New York liberal, can report on energy for 15 years and believe that by speeding up and using the regenerative brakes you can make power.

The Model-S is for those brunches when you want to take your publicist and your dog groomer in the same car. No one who "has" to be somewhere would ever consider an electric car.

"May" have? Really?
But I can tell (for instance) about the speed that she's pretty spot on. There may be some discrepancy between what the reporter said and what actually happened, but his story there conforms more closely to the data than what Tesla reported. I could see some of that just by eye, without even examining the data particularly closely.
The NYTs reporter lied (perhaps not intentionally).
Ah! The old "unintentional lie." Got it. We also call that "a mistake." In this case, I'm more inclined to call it "the truth, but the data he had was imperfect."
But that really brings us to the main two points. One, who has more to gain here, Tesla or NYT? Oh, sure, the "Oh, the Tesla Model-S didn't perform as promised!" might be good to sell a few extra newspapers, but it's not like it's going to make this guy's career. On the other hand, it could really hurt Tesla.
Tesla has more at stake, making their motives more questionable.
Two, the question is if the car can perform like a car worth $100,000. I think, even if he hadn't had any trouble with the car at all, I could say without fear of contradiction: no.

It's kinda cute watching folks decide who of two hated parties they're going to hate more, regardless of the actual data, init? Knee-jerk hatred uber alles.
As you say, the speedometer may have been off. The reporter writes that the tires were not the standard tires and that, itself, may account for a major difference.

Except that's exactly what Tesla is marketing the Model-S for. It's supposed to be an entry into the mainstream auto market. It doesn't matter that it would suck for that purpose.
If all they were interested in were the "Malibu Brunch Set" they wouldn't be taking the line of argument they are against the NYT. They'd be saying, "Yeah, when you try to drive it in a way other than it was intended to be driven, it fails. So what? When you drive for purpose X and in conditions, Y, Z, or Alpha, it works just fine."
They're not. They're contemplating suing the NYT over this because they want the Model-S to be seen as something that could compete against a Lexus LS, or some other luxury sedan.

As for the data itself- I know I've never been misled by my GPS data AT ALL. So of course it must be 100% accurate.
I'm not saying that he got it all right. I'm saying there's an explanation other than "lying," and that when the data is examined it conforms more closely to what the reporter said than what Tesla says.
And, again, if the point of the Model-S is to be a competitor against other luxury sedans: even if Tesla's account were 100% accurate, it would show that it fails at that.

In the '60s, Dr. Strangelove made an iconic image of a bronco billy riding the bomb. Now NASA is attempting to capitalize on the Bruce Willis flick. Talk about a death wish, instead of letting it pass by, blasting the earth with millions of asteroid fragments because some industry wants those minerals for their own to sell to whoever survives. Let the tinfoil hat elitists shoot themselves on their rocket ride to rule the asteroid, removing themselves from earth.

I think they're estimating that the explosion was 6 miles up. By the time it actually hit the ground, it may not have had enough energy to leave anything other than a "small" crater.
Of course, there's also the definition of "small." Are we talking "VW Beetle" small, or "bread box" small? Going the other way, are we defining "half-a-city-block" as "small?"

The sonic boom alone was enough to cause some serious damage. The actual explosion must have been incredible. Thank goodness it doesn't seem to have hit a heavily populated area. Can you imagine it coming down in the middle of Moscow? Or in NYC?

well, the big boom in the SMODVID is the thing actually blowing up, not a sonic boom
the reports say the thing was traveling 33,000 mph, which is Mach43 (speed of sound x 43)
that's twice as fast as manned space flight
I'm just a lowly HS graduate, but isn't a sonic boom the result of some object accelerating to and then exceeding the speed of sound?

As I understand it a sonic boom is the sound associated with an object moving through the air at or above the speed of sound, not just the moment when it exceeds the speed of sound. But I'm a liberal arts major, so I could be stupidly, stupidly wrong.

Well in this case it is the shockwave of the thing entering Earth's atmosphere at speed once it went through dense enough air to generate the wave...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_boom
The acceleration to speed is not the causative so much as the object being above trigger speed for air density...
meaning if you had an object already zooming at speed it would still generate the wave once atmospheric density was manipulated....
BOOM!
We grew up at an air base where every once in a while F-4 pilots would get excited....
*boom*

Ugh. Them prices is ugly. But then again, my view is a bit skewed because A) I'm a cheapskate, and B) I cast and reload most of what I shoot. (500) cast lead .45's run me (hard cost) about $30. No you're correct the wave in the case of a meteor is caused when the density of the object indexed to speed intersects with the proper density of atmosphere to allow the wave to be generated....
IOW it is "backwards" compared to how we usually ponder sonic booms being generated but not anomalous.
