In 2009, the Obama administration gave $24.8 million in stimulus tax credits to GE’s famous “Appliance Park” factory compound.
In 2010, Appliance Park won a $2.5M stimulus grant.
In 2013 they are laying off 500 people. Note: A “tax credit” is the same thing as a “grant”.

It's not even the real average of available data; it's a 30-year average. I'm not sure if we're still using 1971-2000, or if we've rolled over to 1981-2010 yet (cynically, I think they'll keep using the latter so they can "prove" gorbal warmening with the smaller number).

Good Stuff MPPPP, you are becoming a treasure. I hope you are saving these stories, put them together and it could be a great read.
Thanks, OSP. The thought had occurred to me, but I'm leery of trying it. You see, none of the work I've done is original. I'm merely taking already existing anecdotes, or stories from magazines or excerpts from books and retelling them, with a tweak or two here and there to make them my own. Now, that may fly here on this Smart Military Blog*, but whether that would fly in the real world, I don't know.
Also, anyone who is interested in Hollywood from after, say 1965, would find nothing in my book, since I don't really have a lot, nor care a lot, about the modern cinema.
But I have thought about it. If any morons with real-world publishing experience can chime in, that'd be great. BTW, I mentioned on the overnight thread that Friday's story will be about Errol Flynn. I haven't decided on a star or movie for tomorrow, though, so I'm open to suggestions.

I have. Very short story: Arbuckle, after finishing a grueling round of shooting, went to SF to blow off some steam. During the course of the party, a young girl / part-time good-time girl named Virginia Rappe was injured, but nobody knows how. She died in hospital, probably as a result of abdominal trauma and infection suffered from an abortion (she had had multiple). A woman named Maude Delmont telegraphed Matthew Brady, the SF DA, that they had a chance to make some money off of Arbuckle’s plight. Roscoe (no-one who knew him called him “Fatty”) went through three trials, finally being acquitted in the third (it was very obvious that evidence had been faked, perjured or lost), but the new production censor, Will Hays, decreed that none of Arbuckle’s films could ever be shown again.
I know I wrote about the case somewhat recently; anybody with good search-fu can go through AceÂ’s archives to find the post. As far as reading about it, the Wiki entry is good as far as it goes, so you can start there.

That sounds a lot like the obvious solution to cut gun violence. Nahhhh, to obvious.
I guarantee you, it would cut teachers' work in half instantly and free up lots of time and energy to actually do thigns for students who care.
I wish I could agree with you, but I saw many of these folks during the recent strike, and if they ever cared, they sure don't now. Freeing up teacher time is one thing, getting them to use it effectively is another. Only one thing will work, and that's a credible threat of an end to the gravy train.

All due respect, Captain - the system is fatally compromised when someone like Bill Ayers is dimissed as a "dipshit." That malignant, treasonous little bastard and his POS wife should have had a bullet through their heads years ago. That the two are not only still alive, but considered worthy of respect by our "betters" shows that this country has not only welcomed vipers into her bosom, she's done it actively and with knowledge aforethought. I don't like to wish America evil, but that Ayers lives is so obviously an indication that this country is neither worth fighting for nor surviving that I find it hard to argue otherwise.

To be fair to the people, in this case they are not directly to blame. Ayres and his scrunt got off on a court ruling against the DOJ and the FBI who used illegal wire taps.
The idiots at SCOTUS punish the "people" for the misdeeds of the police. Not only that, but they still do that in almost all cases with the outrageous joint and several liability.

Morning, all!
Don't know why, but I'm terribly depressed this morning. Does anyone have any good news or happy happenstance to share? I could really use the cheer.
My lone smile this morning came while I was driving to work and had to stop and wait for a whole flock of wild turkeys to cross the road. That in itself isn't unusual, but the cute part was that one of them clearly didn't like the feel of the wet sand on the road on her feet, so she kept hop-skipping across to try and reach the other side without touching the pavement. I was worried at first she might be hurt, but no; just picky about where she stepped. The other turkeys just strutted across the road like usual, clearly thinking, "Geez, Bernice, would you get a move on?" Adorable.
Oh! That was actually my SECOND smile. The first was also during my morning commute when I saw an itty-bitty European Starling sharing some bird food in a neighbor's driveway with four huge crows. The starling looked totally at home, like it didn't have a care in the world despite the fact that the other birds could easily have curbstomped it and gobbled IT instead of the bird food. The crows didn't seem to care, either, though I'm sure the presence of the starling's entire flock roosting in a nearby tree would be enough to quell any murderous intent on their part.
I wish I'd had my camera - would have made a great picture.

1. The LA shooter's name was Ali Syed. He is now with the virgins.
Gee, there's a big fucking surprise. Do we have any word on the names of his victims? Particularly the first one? I'm sure the carjacking victims were just innocent passersby, but what're the odds the first one he killed somehow offended his dearly held Muzzie sensibilities. Since he killed her in his parents home -- where he also lived -- I'm sure she was a relative.

that eases my worry somewhat. It is quoting the NYT. And they say the
good old "some Republicans" but only quote one local RINO from Maine.
If ANY Republican votes for Gun Control they are probably dead. If enough of them vote to actually pass a magazine ban the Party is dead.

Oh, MWR, I'm so sorry. I know how much depression hurts.
I don't have any good news, but I can tell you a Sam Goldwyn story:
Goldwyn was notorious for mangling the language - "a verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on" is one of his best-known, as well as responding to a merger offer by sneering, "Gentlemen, you can include me out." One day, it seems, he was in the projection room watching the rushes of a new movie and wasn't sure about it. "What do you boys think? Is it any good? I should drop it, right?" he snapped, and kept right on talking.
One executive tried to interrupt the flow of words, but Goldwyn fixed him with a stare. "Don't say yes until I've finished talking!"

Constitutional lawyers and some conservatives generally believe that limiting magazine size falls within the boundaries of recent Supreme Court decisions on gun rights.
AND
Evidence suggests that a ban on magazine size would indeed reduce the number of those killed in mass shootings, largely because of the difficulty in changing clips, particularly among amateur gun users.
What is an amateur gun user? Someone who doesn't get paid to use a gun?

Once in a while a redtail hawk will perch at the top of a tall tree behind chez Hate; I know this because the local bluejays will start raising a ruckus and start strafing it until they drive it off.

I've seen groups of small birds pestering larger birds, too. Strength in numbers! And if it keeps the crows away from the smaller birds' eggs, all the better.
I do love my little family of neighborhood crows, though. I know they can be ugly, mean, smelly birds, but they're also ridiculously smart. I've named the three I usually see Heckle, Jeckle and Moe. Lately there have been three or four others, who I assume are juveniles, who I've nicknamed Flo, Larry, Curly and Shemp. I can't tell any of them apart so I don't know who is who, but I like to say good morning to them as I pass by.
Yesterday our front yard was bird central, actually. It was crazy! I think because the wind was so strong all weekend all the birds were taking the opportunity to get out and stretch their wings yesterday without being knocked ass over tea kettle. A whole flock of fat robins was whirling around from front yard to front yard. I saw a couple of bluejays, two Downy woodpeckers, at least one white-breasted nuthatch (I actually think it was two), and a cardinal. And when I got to work I could hear our resident mockingbird kicking up his regular hullabaloo.
I've been yearning for spring to arrive since OCTOBER. Looks like it's really, genuinely on its way!

This angle that the WWE is taking with Jack Swagger is really pissing me off. I'm tired of having my beliefs and values mocked by Hollywood on a daily basis.
And yes, this is completely different from the Communism angles of the '80s and the Nation of Islam storyline from the '90s. In those storylines, America was the face. With this angle, the WWE is pitting Americans against each other to stoke the flames higher. Piss on them.

That reminds me of the time when I saw a crow chasing a sparrow: the sparrow dove for the ground with the crow in hot pursuit and then pulled up and flew through the fork of a large tree. The crow managed to pull up at the bottom, but he couldn't pull up tight enough to make it to the fork in the tree. He slammed into the tree trunk about a foot below the fork and fell down dead.

We've had a Cooper's or female Red-tailed hawk in the back yard stripping away whats left of the rib-meat on the deer we butchered this winter. Hard, dry, leathery "meat"! I cannot imagine the strength of that bird's neck and talons and the sharpness of its' beak to be eating that stuff. God in nature is amazing to me. My feel-good story for the day. Bluejays can be NASTY. Gorgeous birds, but I don't want to get on their bad side! I'd beat feet (or wings as the case may be) if I were that hawk, too!
Last year I kept hearing this noise in our backyard that sounded like a creaking door hinge. I couldn't figure out what the hell I was hearing and it was driving me nuts. Come to find out "creaking door hinge" is one of the calls of a bluejay. You'd think after living around bluejays my whole life I would have realized that sooner. lol!

178 BC, you probably remember there were a number of church attacks about 15 years, give or take ago.
Our pastor asked me about training some of the men to handle it. Had to inform him there's no such thing, Karate Kid aside, as instant martial arts.
Told him the best thing would have some of us bring a second "Bible" in a zippered case and pointed out strategic places for them to sit.
He didn't want to go there.
Posted by: teej at February 20, 2013 08:47 AM (yrHcy)
Actually, I don't. I would've been 15 or 16 at the time, so.....
I had a convo a few months back about with our worship pastor about security. And about whether anyone in the church was carrying. The answers were not encouraging.

I KNOW, right? There's a falcon that lives around my workplace that I occasionally see. It's fairly small even compared to the local crows, but then it takes off from its perch and it's just.... wow.
My friend in Seattle CANNOT understand why I find birds so interesting, but they're endlessly fascinating to me. I love watching them think. You can almost hear the little gears in their heads ticking around until they make a decision. "Yes, I WILL hop over there and peck at that little clump of dirt." Hop hop hop "Success!"

Bluejays have an incredible range of sounds that mean different things; I've heard a melodic sound from one that might have been related to "I'm in the mood". I once saw a cardinal tee off on a bluejay to drive it away; doubtlessly from a nest it was ready to rob.
Male cardinals are very territorial and will unload on any other male redbird that violates its no fly zone. We get cardinal nests in our front and back yards; the fledglings grow up quickly and both parents help them learn to fly.

I was surprised by just how many different sounds bluejays make. You think you know everything, then you realize you don't know squat. They're so nice to watch, too -- these bright little flurries of color against the otherwise grim backdrop of bare winter trees. It's refreshing.
We had a nesting pair of cardinals in my yard a few years ago, but they haven't been back for a while. I was quite surprised to see that cardinal the other day. I know they're very territorial, and by gum, our yard seems to be EVERY bird's territory. It would be nice to have them around again, just because they're such lovely birds to look at. But if they were to drive away some of my favorite residents -- like the catbirds who show up in the summer and the cowbirds who crop up in the fall -- I'd be quite disappointed.

It was learning to fly, had fallen to the ground and couldn't get back into the tree.
It was a male and REALLY big. I wore rubber gloves and put him back into the tree. He got airborne with the extra height and didn't fail again.
