Morning, 'rons and 'ronettes. Sorry about yesterday; I promise I'll talk about David Lean and Lawrence of Arabia on Monday. In the meantime, here's a story about an Errol Flynn movie that you've never seen:
By 1950, Flynn's career was on the downslide. Although not yet the bloated, shambling drunk of his final years, his hard lifestyle had worn on him and he was beginning to look seedy and dissipated, both in his movies and in person. After the disgrace of Hello, God, a film which stank so badly it was never even released in the States, Flynn starred in four more movies that did nothing to enhance his box office appeal and Warner Brothers - trying to get him to break his contract so they could dump him - accused him of, in his words, "breach of contract, holding up the company and general bad behavior. . ."
Angry, humiliated and discouraged, Flynn started his own company, Errol Flynn Pictures, and headed for Europe, where in 1954 he produced Crossed Swords, a very obvious throwback to his swashbuckling days, but even with co-star Gina Lollobrigida, the picture was not a success. Beaten but unbowed, Flynn decided to damn the torpedoes and produce a real Hollywood-style epic. The subject? William Tell.
Ever the gambler, Flynn proved his commitment to the project by putting up half of the $900,000 budget himself. A further $200,000 came from an Italian backer named Count Fossataro, and the Italian government was persuaded by Flynn (who had lost none of his ingratiating charm) into ponying up another $150,000. Flynn now had money, a cast (including his old friend Bruce Cabot as the villianous Austrian Gessler) and a crew. Shooting began.
Everything ran smoothly. Too smoothly, as it turned out. After a few weeks, with about half an hour of the movie under his belt, Flynn's world blew apart. First, Flynn's accountants told him that the Tell budget was gone. It had all been spent. Then Fossataro's checks began bouncing. Next, Flynn's business manager, Al Blum, spent all of the actor's available cash on one last wild spree before dying - "Tell Errol I'm sorry" were his last words. The IRS dropped by the set to inform Flynn that he owed Uncle Sam $800,000 in back taxes. And finally, friend Cabot, impatient to be paid, sued Flynn for his salary and had both the actor's car and his wife's clothes confiscated for collateral. These events, one on the other, were like a gut punch to Flynn. Already suffering from jaundice, he collapsed, and while in hospital, William Tell's cameras, film stock and equipment were seized.
Once back on his feet, Flynn tried to resurrect his movie. He tried approaching Warners for funding, but they refused, as did other friends and investors. Needing money not just for the movie, but for his own living expenses, Flynn appeared on a quiz show, The Big Surprise, and, to his surprise, won $30,000 (the category was nautical questions; Flynn was always an expert yachtsman). But the winnings were not nearly enough for Flynn's own lifestyle - and they certainly were not enough for a movie budget.
Sadly, Flynn realized that William Tell would never be made. In the words of film curator Jeannine Basinger, "According to his friends, the failure of this project did something to Flynn that he never fully got over. It was worse than the rape trial* in that it connected directly to his sense of himself as an artist. It also represented betrayal by friends and backers he had trusted; he felt like a fool."
After the Tell footage had been seized, it vanished; Flynn was never able to recover it and it is likely to have long since been destroyed. But you never know. . .perhaps in some closet or back room in an obscure little corner of Italy or Switzerland, hidden under crumbling papers and layers of dust, there is a film canister with thirty minutes of raw footage of Errol Flynn that no one has ever seen - the child of his heart, the lost William Tell.
*In 1942, Flynn was tried for the rape of a young girl named Peggy Satterlee. Due mainly to the muckraking efforts of his attorney Jerry Geisler (one of Hollywood's most ruthless trial lawyers), he was found not guilty. Arguably, the case marked the beginning of the end of Flynn's image as a carefree swashbuckler with a golden heart. It's a story that deserves fuller treatment than this note, and I'll tell it one of these days.

Without jury trial, Americans ordered and executed by drone inside the USA.
Consider the "unprecedented" requirement to make news beyond a Drudge headline, or for longer than a 15 minute attention span from Joe Q. Public. It's politics, using the public distaste of drones overhead to drive home the point that Washington's gone wildly insane with abusive powers.

Errol Flynn really was an asshole. I wait for MP4's story. Maybe he will tell us how he contracted and spread every type of venereal disease there was.
I hope that wasn't the impression my story gave you, Vic. Compared with some other Hollywood stars, Flynn was a pretty good guy. He just had no self-control when it came to women. And yes, he was riddled with STDs; in fact, that's why he didn't fight in WWII. He signed up for the draft right after becoming an American citizen in 1941, but they rejected him. Warners wouldn't release the reason why, so people who saw Flynn in his war films thought he was a coward.

It's too bad. It was always fun to go "downtown" (we called it that since we were little) We still go down for plays and such once or twice a year, but it's no tops on my list. Most of the killin' is in neighborhoods that I do not go to, but I don't know when that will change either. Maybe Chicago should allow guns, but teach the bangers how to shoot properly, so that innocents won't be shot. I have no problem with them killing each other.
It's even safer if you're the mayor and have 10 armed guards around you.

MP4, I love My Favorite Year with Peter O'Toole as the "Errol Flynn" character.
You know, that's a movie I've never seen, even though I have it on my "should get to it one of these days" list. Since we're due for another f'ng foot of snow this weekend, maybe I should call it up on Netflix. And not to nitpick, but I believe the O'Toole character is supposed to be John Barrymore, not Flynn. But I could be wrong.
Flynn was no Wallace Beery. That was a guy that deserved to be thrown off a bridge.
Yes, I never cared much for him (although Mickey Rooney said he was one of the best people he ever worked with), but when I read how he raped Gloria Swanson on their wedding night, that basically turned me off of Beery forever. It does, though, put a creepy extra frisson to his character of General-Director Preysing in Grand Hotel, trying to bed the luscious Joan Crawford.

MP4, I read the headline comments in the morning for two reasons- Vic's headlines and your Hollywood stories. They're great.
I know that this is towards the end of your favored period, but some time in the future, would you share any "On the Waterfront" and/or early Marlon Brando stories that you may have? I've heard some really interesting facts about the real mobsters, priest, etc. that the movie was based on, but you always seem to have those stories that few people have heard.
In return, I offer this story that a college professor of mine (also my thesis advisor) told me as a small gesture of thanks. Back in the late 1950s, she was out in California as a single woman for a short vacation (I forget if it was LA or San Francisco). A well-connected friend of hers asked if she would like him to arrange a date to go out some evening so that she wasn't just dining alone. She agreed.
When the arranged evening came, who comes to pick her up but Brando, who still looked like the young stud from his Stanley Kowalski days. He treated her to dinner at a Japanese restaurant, and even bought her a silk kimono. She said that nothing else happened that evening, and that he was a gentleman, but that she still had the kimono.
Anyway, have a great weekend!

Oh yeah. It was "homophobic" to suggest they should form life-long pair bonds instead of doing their thing.
I feel sorry for "transgender kids" under 21 or so; there's no way for them to know if that's truly they really wanted for their lives or if they've just been manipulated by adults with an agenda into thinking that's what they should. But if you've still got your beans and frank, you don't get to go in the girls' room. If the administrators are so adamant boys who think they're girls shouldn't use the boys' room, let them use the administrators' or teachers' bathroom. Problem solved.

If there is something unpleasant and controversial to be done make sure the pain falls on the other guy's constituents. The military rank and file is seen as conservative/Republican leaning so they are going to get the shaft. It is a pity the GOP hasn't figured out this simple rule of politics.

Thank you so much. You make me blush, but I'm glad I can give you a little entertainment in the morning. BTW, I do want to thank all of you fellow Morons for the kind words about my stories and my book. It does help to keep depression at bay, and the discipline of a new story each morning is good for my own writing.
But to your request: I'm not a Brando fan, but I know I've got something on Waterfront's director, Elia Kazan, somewhere, so I will see what I can dig up for you next week.
And thank you for that story - I've heard a similar one, but I'll save it for next week. Yours goes in my file.

Yeah. As the malleable goal posts of "purity" shifted according to political compliant expedience, on the way to the forum, socialists coalesced while conservatives appear to have shrunk.
The "consequences" of elections don't phase the GOP Leadership, whose only attachment to constituents is tax revenue that sticks in the politicians' pockets.

Those who make real sacrifices and subject themselves to real physical harm will always be envied, hated, and feared by their inferiors.
And of course they are an obstacle to the Long Term Plans. Hence the need to hollow out the institution.

Those flame emails are almost always "read receipt" types and I refuse to give whoever sent it the satisfaction (though I also have it set to always ask if I want to send a read-receipt - to which I always say no).

Eh, it's work-related. I sent out some reports last week to the schools with which my Bureau works, and I discovered yesterday that the data in the report I sent to one school was monumentally wrong. I think I must have had a bad sort of the tables at some point that messed all the numbers up, like a slot machine. As soon as I realized the mistake I got rid of the bad data and recalculated the correct values, then I reran the report and sent it out to the school yesterday afternoon with my sincere apologies.
Normally I wouldn't be worried about opening an email from one of our schools, but this particular administrator... well, let's just say she has the sense of humor of a dead frog and a permanent sourpuss expression that looks like she spent her formative years sucking on lemons. Depending on her mood when she opened my email, it's either going to be a very bland, "Thank you," or a blistering excoriation about my stupidity. After this past week, I'd really rather avoid the latter.

I was so pleasantly surprised that anyone in the statist education business would not be anti-gun, I tossed her off a little contribution. She's not up for election at the moment, but I found her candidate page and figured a few bucks would speak as loudly as a long letter. Got the usual computerized receipt (which is doubtless now on my official record), and figured that was it.
Yesterday I received a full-page letter of thanks, handwritten. I used to work in support of the marketing industry, and am pretty good at recognizing those fake fonts that look like real writing. This was not it. And even though I'd only sent money, no ideological explication with it, somehow she sensed the reason for my donation, and addressed that in the note. I wonder how many of those she wrote. Kind of hope she has her arm in a sling from writer's cramp.
Now she may have a dozen catholic schoolgirls held at slave-labor faking her personal responses (I mention the catholics because their penmanship is so often above average), but either way, this is old fashioned attention to the details of politics, and I was impressed with the medium and its content. If she survives this incident, I expect her to go much farther.
Now I want to talk to her about that damned Common Core Curriculum. Think I'll need to send more money?
