Monday, Monday, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Hope you all had a happy weekend. I expect the morning briefing will be as depressing as always, so why don’t we talk movies for a little bit? I was asked for a David Lean story, but sadly I don’t have one. So here’s the tale of his best-known movie:
Imagine, if you will, Marlon Brando kitted out in a burnoose and flowing robes, galloping after a column of Turkish soldiers screaming "No prisoners!" Well, that's who producer Sam Spiegel wanted for the title role of the epic Lawrence of Arabia. Director Lean, however, was leery of Brando's ego and his way of terrorizing everyone on a set. How about Albert Finney instead? So Finney was dutifully screen-tested, only to turn down the role because he didn't want to be chained to a multi-film contract with Spiegel. Then Lean suggested Peter O'Toole*, having been impressed with his performance in the 1959 film The Day They Robbed the Bank of England.
Spiegel, however, didn't want O'Toole. He had a grudge against him, and hereÂ’s why: it seems that when Katharine Hepburn was in London, she had been impressed with O'Toole's performance in the play The Long and the Short and the Tall and had recommended him to Spiegel, who was having problems with Montgomery Clift while filming Suddenly Last Summer. O'Toole, considered as a stop-gap replacement for Clift, was hustled out to Shepperton Studios and onto the set of a doctor's office for a screent test. He was given an X-ray as a prop, and, cheeky as ever, decided to lead off his test with a joke; giving the woman opposite him a serious look, he intoned, "Mrs Spiegel, your son will never play the violin again." The producer was not amused and O'Toole was tossed off the Suddenly set. But after seeing the actor's test for Lawrence, even Spiegel had to admit O'Toole was perfect for the part. Swallowing his distaste, Spiegel called O'Toole: "I want you to play Lawrence." "Oh, yes," said O'Toole. "Is it a speaking part?" "Don't make jokes," Spiegel growled back.
O'Toole would spend the next two years filming Lawrence, much of that time spent in the company of his new friend Omar Sharif, who had been promoted to the co-starring role of Sherif Ali when other actors considered for the role didn't pan out. "Omar Sharif?" O'Toole exclaimed when he was first introduced to the Egyptian actor. "No one in the world is called Omar Sharif. Your name must be Fred." And from that time on, O'Toole's nickname for Sharif has always been "Cairo Fred." The two partied extremely hearty during the shoot, filming non-stop for ten days, then chartering a private plane to Beirut for three or four days wallowing in the "Sin City of the East"'s bars and whorehouses before staggering back in front of the cameras.
Still, Lawrence took its toll on O'Toole, and not just because of Sam Spiegel's crustiness or the tyrranical direction of David Lean.** After his first lesson learning to ride a camel, blood oozed from the seat of OÂ’TooleÂ’s jeans. He was nearly killed when an effects gun, going off too soon, startled his camel and threw him off in front of several hundred charging crazed Bedouins. At various times he received third-degree burns, dislocated his spine, broke his thumb, tore ligaments in his hip and thigh and suffered two concussions. Six months into the shoot, O'Toole was allowed to go back to England to rest. Once there, he went on what he called, "the ultimate bender. After six months in the desert, I should think so." But he was arrested for drunken driving and had his license pulled for a year, which only infuriated Spiegel more.
But it was all worth it. When Lawrence opened in 1962, it was a world-wide smash - it's still considered one of the greatest films ever made - and O'Toole became an overnight star. So let's let him have the final word:
"I woke up one morning to find I was famous. Bought a white Rolls-Royce and drove down Sunset Boulevard, wearing dark specs and a white suit, waving like the queen mum. Nobody took any fucking notice, but I thoroughly enjoyed it."
Hope you all have a wonderful day. TomorrowÂ’s movie will be On the Waterfront.
*Yes, despite all the jokes, it's his real name: Peter Seamus Lorcan O'Toole.
*Lean was notorious as a mind-gaming tyrant of a director willing to go to any physical and emotional length to get the reaction he wanted out of his actors. O'Toole himself would play a fictionalized (but, according to those who worked with him, a quite accurate) version of Lean in the 1980 film The Stunt Man.

At a Black History Month event held at a Trenton, N.J. church on Sunday, Democratic Senator Bob Menendez blamed conservatives for his ethics scandals, framing them as a racial attack on him because of his Hispanic heritage.
I'm surprised he didn't cry out "I ain't no way taaahhrd!"
Number 1, I'm shocked that evil bastard didn't get struck by lightning the moment he crossed the church's threshhold. Number 2, when the F will the GOP start bringing a damn RICO hammer down on these black churches for in-kind contributions to Democrats?

American people *actually* believe that you *can* balance the budget by reducing the military.
Of course they do. These are the same mewling lackwits who've grown up peddling those imbecilic Air-Force-having-to-hold-a-bake-sale bumper stickers. I guarantee if you asked any one of them what percentage of the budget is consumed by the military, they'd insist it was at least 50 and probably 75%. This country's too stupid to live.

Here in Commiefornia, you will hear the "50%" figure quite regularly. A local article of faith among good liberals.
I used to try to refute it quoting actual percentages.
Libtards would say, "But you're leaving out Bush's wars in Afghanistan and Iraq."
(Note that those wars are always "Bush's wars" or "Republican wars" here. Despite the fact that my entire federal representation at the time, Representative and Senators, were liberal Democrats, and 2 of the 3 voted for 2 out of 2 of those wars.)
So I would respond by saying that, yes, the figure I quoted was inclusive of both of the wars, and it still wasn't 50% of the budget.
They would say, "Oh, you're leaving out the VA."
I would respond by saying that the VA is not part of the military. It's its own separate gig. Department of Defense, and Department of Veterans Affairs. One not being subordinate to the other. (Which actually leads to some spectacular mis-coordination, as any vet who is mustering out can tell you. Not least the SEAL Six shooter who just left the Navy and then bitched he isn't eligible for post-service health care, when any VA counselor would be able to tell him otherwise.)
They would insist on putting the VA in there. Because "we wouldn't need that spending if it weren't for the military". A point I would always argue hugely: much VA health spending would simply be spent by other agencies even if the veteran clients in question had never served, because the majority of vets' health complaints are ordinary ailments that are not service connected, yet the VA still provides that care. But for purposes of argument even with the VA, the military is still not 50% of the budget. Not close.
Then more and more and more shit. The CIA, even though that is its own entirely separate agency not under DOD authority. Liberals consider it part of "the military". Facepalm.
The Department of Energy, even though the part of DOE that handles military nuclear matters is quite small relatively to DOE spending. They want to include all of DOE! You would not believe the stuff libtards want to lump in. Ag Department spending on making sure MRE meals are shelf stable. Unbelievable trifles.
But still, not 50% of the budget. No way, Ray.
Anyway, their final unrefutable trump card is, "Black programs. All the spending on wonder weapons that's not officially on budget."
I say, "But those black programs, unlike the others you've quoted like VA and CIA, are in fact under DOD. They're not listed as what they are, but there are program line items there which cover black world R&D and black world procurement."
The response would be the superior smile. "Oh. That's what _you_ claim. There's a whole secret budget in parallel that we are never made privy to."
For Pete's sake. I give up. You literally cannot argue rationally with a liberal.

"But still, not 50% of the budget. No way, Ray."
Although technically not all in the same basket, it's hard to argue that the DoD, VA and the entire intellegence community aren't part of a universe separate from social services and other government spending.
The position that Mitt took during the election that we need to maintain current spending or even raise defense budgets was wrong.

This is why I went cold turkey on movies and TV.
I fed that beast lavishly for many years. I was an avid moviegoer and TV watcher. But then I finally woke up one day and said, "Holy cow, these people hate my very existence! What am I doing handing them money?"
For me the breaking point was the LA riots in the Nineties.
Affluent liberals in Hollyweird believe, with the absolute _ex cathedra_ certainty of a cardinal at the Council of Trent, that "we should all rely on the police to protect us," and that no one should have privately owned guns.
Well, when LA exploded in lethal violence on a mass scale, the Hollyweird types _were_ protected by LAPD. The cops fell back to defensive perimeters around places like Beverly Hills. It was the ordinary working class Joes and Janes of LA, who didn't live in tony neighborhoods, that were completely abandoned to their fate by the cops.
And yet every night I would see these polished prats who've never faced any real risk in their lives, preaching fervently about how those Joes and Janes should have their ability for self-defense stripped away.
Steam jets. Ears. Some assembly required.
Anyway, I said, "I'm done with this. Done." And I quit going to the movies, and quit watching entertainment TV (still watch the occasional science or history show when I can find it on line). Cancelled cable. Threw my TV in the trash. I cannot tell you how HUGELY GOOD it feels to no longer feed that beast.

Someone who can understand the intricacies of Hollywood contracts and divorce settlements can master asic budgeting, if they wish to.
The problem is they do not, because the stuff of government is drily presented on cable channels without glam clothing or handsome stars.
Celebrity and glam life-styles are what these people care about, but they are not necessarily low IQ. They are CHOOSING to spend their time learning trivial stuff about Hollywood rather than their government.
A good research program would find out WHY.
Posted by: Miss Marple at February 25, 2013 03:47 AM (GoIUi)
My counter would be, "If you believe that, what makes you think the rest of the numbers bear any resemblance to reality? How much are entitlements really eating to buy elections? How much are we really giving other countries in aid? The bigger the government gets the harder it becomes to know where all the bits are going."

Not at all. You've neatly reversed my view here. That view being:
I don't watch their shows because they disagree with us.
Watching their shows lavishly lines their pockets, and I have no desire to lavishly line the pockets of people who disagree with us on damn near every substantive issue.
"Hollywood gives us their Playbook, wide open for our perusal. Stupid to not use it."
Except that playbook is inherently toxic. It elevates the emotive over the rational. It prizes form over substance. It celebrates falsity as truth. It thinks the imaginary is more important than the real. If you call plays from that book, with good intentions, it'll end up corrupting and ruining your own efforts in the long run.
Entertainment culture IS liberalism. Simply in a more distilled, concentrated form.

I fail to see how watching the Oscars or any other Hollywood production is going to give me any more tips from their playbook.

The phrase I find myself using the most with LIV/Libs is, "That's not true."
Any more, I torn as to what to do about my friends who think they know what's going on: let them continue to think wrong things, or try to show them there's a lot more to it and they're not being told what they should know in order to be well-informed.

no I'm pretty sure using as the Swede in "hell on Wheels" said immoral mathematics you are going to have me arrive at the conclusion that some of Horrywood needs some dental work done with hickory ax handles....
and I sorta know this already

"no seriously nuke all defense spending besides I'm sure we cause all the world angst with our spending...."
Yes, that was exactly what I was saying in my comment.

Pretty much in allying yourself with the one area the donks love the scissors at you're empowering their crash dpeth to avoid the depth charges dive on Mil spending which...no mockery I am preparing for....
in the grand scheme of things DoD spending is not ahsitorically high at all spending 46% on entitlements just counting medicare and soc sec is....add in another 800 billion in foodtsmps...
fuck it I don't want to argue it anymore.
Cut defense to the bone...that way if it comes to it I won't be fighting people I love.

The only way to fix Horryweird is to spend billions I don't have or engage in felonies or an insurgency

we do make better jokes than Horrywood, the left won't let the right on the soapbox and frankly is not running a profit driven business model anymore...
and YOU are intoning that we must not continue to try passive ngative feedback response to their revenue stream....
don't worry I'll never start the big brawl but if it comes I plan to test Paul Krugman's notion that the broken window fallacy is a fallacy.

maybe I missed the genius point.

Old friend of mine I hadn't seen in 2 decades drifted from JFK donk to TeaPartier...
he says I am a starry eyes optomist based on my blind patriotism when i say we have about an 8-12 yr window tops to defuse the bomb.
He feels that Mitt whom he was not a huge fan of was our forlorn Hope and the game is in the final 4-8 years now.

probably more than you know...
one of the most powerful scenes in "Conspirata" about the fall of Cicero was when Marc Anthony and the other Caesarian followers who had been Catalinians dismantled a temple in 8 hours overnight.....
dismantling an unoccupied public school overnight using non explosive means would make a point.

It's not that exactly. Vic can explain it better than I can but basically there is a power base in the SC GOP that are crossover donks. Sanford is favored by them b/c they don't want a harder conservative.
Posted by: sven10077 at February 25, 2013 04:36 AM (LRFds)
Truman you and I had long discussions last fall over the need for a PAC or two for change but I just don't see it working anymore. The sequester fight is interesting to me because 56% of the GOP wants taxes which they know will not help to "fix the sequester bomb."
I don't think US economic thought is based on any reality anymore, and as such we will need taught by the wreck.
I pray for a wreck versus a 70 year fall.

Truman we lost because we did not fight them over the 40 years, we never tried hard to stop them.
Trust me they are not gonna shrug and say "ok okay you the new hire we're gonna let you get your way there bud...we're uh gonna focus on the actual work of the institution while you start bending said work."
Try, hell I may bang the till for your PAC but I am not seeing a win.
If they had ANY fear EPA would not be playing the games it is playing and so openly colluding with the Watermelons using specious nicknamed e-mail accounts.
They have no fear because they will use the machine to thresh the wheat.

and Truman I am not patting you on the head you do have the right idea but it has to be state by state and it will cost...
basically one of the things my long lost contact said was 'there is no difference just a speed change' and he is correct hell we've all known this of the GOP going back to Bush 2000.
Anyway I am sincere I do wish you the best.
And LincolnTF I just reread the thread...I must have missed my martyr complex before our last two go 'rounds...
basically you're edging up to telling me and by "me" I mean people who shat on the Oscars "you don't matter in not watching" well ok point taken of course Seth waving his wang at you who did watch is him proving neither do you.
No personal offense meant and I am not "on the cross" bud.
It doesn't matter that I don't watch because too many of us do, and it also does not mean WW3 will break out because I don't watch I am not an idiot.
Given my retraint and deference and unwillingness to be a Mcveigh shit be upon him it means the cold civil war continues and Dana Lush is trying to be on both sides.

My displeasure with Sanford is not because of his Hot Latina whoopie cushion BTW I just think he was not on pace to outperform Nikki is all.
I do hope to buy you and Ms Vic dinner over the two or so years we'll be there...a SC moron meetup would be a ball.
