3 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Tuesday, February 26, 2013.  On this day in 1919 an act of congress made the Grand Canyon a national park.  On the same day in 1929 Silent Cal does an Executive Order creating the Grand Teton National Park thus setting the precedence for all future Democrats to grab land for the watermelon commies.

17

Morning, all.  ItÂ’s not that cold here in northern MA this morning, but it is rainy and dreary; just the kind of weather tailor-made for sleeping in, if one was a member of the FSA.  Oh, well, letÂ’s grab a cup of tea or coffee and settle in for a story. . .

In 1949, the New York Sun reporter Malcolm Johnson won a Pulizter Prize for his series, "Crime On The Waterfront," which detailed the seedy world of corruption, blackmailing and extortion infesting the Mafia-dominated waterfront dockworkers unions.  Then, in 1953, a dockworker named Anthony DiVincenzo testified in front of the newly-created Waterfront Commission about the Gambino and Genovese crime families' hold on the waterfront.  In the tight world of dockers, it was very dangerous - monetarily and physically - for DiVincenzo to testify, and director Elia Kazan saw a bit of himself reflected in the docker, as he had gained the enmity of a number of Hollywood friends by naming names for the House Un-American Activities Committee.

Kazan first approached Arthur Miller to write a screenplay, but he wasn't happy with the finished result (and, of course, it didn't help that Miller had not testified and was lionized for it, while Kazan had and was vilified).  He next approached the writer Budd Schulberg, who had attended the DiVincenzo hearings,* and the two knocked out a script.

As he would do for the role of Private Maggio in From Here To Eternity, Frank Sinatra campaigned hard to get the part of Hoboken-born docker Terry Malloy, even meeting with Kazan to discuss costuming and motivation.  The problem, however, was that Sinatra wasn't a star.  His recording career was in a slump (he was still recovering from the abysmal single "Mama Will Bark," a real stinker) and his personal problems had tarnished his image nearly beyond repair.  No studio wanted him, and even Kazan was leery of giving such a meaty role to The Voice.

Marlon Brando, on the other hand, was hot.  He'd already come off of Kazan's film of A Streetcar Named Desire with rave reviews.  Our old friend Columbia producer Sam Spiegel (he of yesterdayÂ’s Peter OÂ’Toole story) told the director that with Sinatra in the lead, he could only raise about $500,000; with Brando's name attached to the project, it would be easily twice as much.  But Brando didn't want to do Waterfront; he refused to work for a man who had testified before the Senate House Committee.  It was only after a long period of cajoling by Spiegel that Brando signed on, telling himself that at least, playing Malloy, he would be able to drive into New York on Fridays to see his psychiatrist.

Kazan sent a letter to Sinatra informing him of the decision.  Devastated, it would be months before he could even bring himself to write a short note to the director: "For me to tell you that I was not deeply hurt would not be telling you my true feelings."  Sinatra despised Brando - "Mumbles" was his constant nickname for the actor, even when the two were shooting Guys and Dolls together - and in his anger, sued Spiegel for breach of contract.  The decision would have cost Spiegel half a million dollars, but the two men settled out of court with no money exchanging hands.

When released, On the Waterfront was a commercial and critical success, tamping down - if never fully silencing - the anger at Kazan for his HUAC testimony.  But one man who didn't share in its success was Lee J. Cobb.  Although his portrayal of union boss Johnny Friendly is a masterpiece of malevolence, the role was the last sputtering flame of a dying candle.  Already ostracized in Hollywood because of his own HUAC testimony, Cobb in 1953 was a bankrupt who had just suffered a massive coronary.  The role of Friendly was welcome work, but it didn't save his career.  Memories are long in Hollywood, and while Cobb managed to snare juicy roles in 12 Angry Men and The Brothers Karamazov, his final years were a wasteland of second-rate TV appearances or supporting roles in cinematic turkeys like Our Man Flint.

And thatÂ’s it for now, you guys!.  Hope you enjoyed that.  Tomorrow IÂ’ll tell you about Raquel Welch and her disastrous turn in Myra Breckenridge, then I think weÂ’ll go light for the next few stories.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*DiVincenzo later claimed that Schulberg had stolen his story over a month-long series of interviews, but the writer denied it, claiming he only drew from the publicly-available Commission testimony.  He did, however, spend a number of hours interviewing Father John Corridan, who would become Karl Malden's character Father Barry.

No, OSP, you will not notice a daily impact due to sequester.

Unless you were expecting the U.S. military to actually defend you while you sleep.  Then you might notice.

DoD can ABSOLUTELY take this cut.  What is CANNOT do without breaking the place is take a 10% salami slice to every program and activity - which is the way Congress mandated it.

Just tell us to take the cut, and then give us the authority to move cash around to pay the "must pay" bills and we'll be fine.

The problem is, Congress didn't do that, so yeah, DoD is fucked.

93 Mornin', 'tards! Okay, a couple of observations from last night's wrestling show. 1) they were in Dallas and they called out Glenn Beck. One of the announcers went to Beck's studio to harass him into coming on the program, but they didn't show it. It's web only content. They continue to talk about "Beck, Limbaugh and Alex Jones" as the anti-immigrant forces. I think Vince is miffed that he couldn't get Beck to come clown around with him. 2) the tea party/racist heels explained why they were against illegal immigration. They did it rudely, but nothig they sad was untrue. They even made the point, to which the champion agreed, that it takes 10 years to gain Mexican residence and foreigners can't own land. They got zero reaction from the audience. Then they kicked it into racist mode and conflated the (legal) champion baby face from Mexico with illegals. That drew a reaction. The main event was Cena versus CM Punk, and it was match of the year material. It brought the house down and rightly so. Cena will fight The Rock for the WWE championship at Wrestlemania. Despite the heavily Democrat skew of the WWE's audience, the evil tea party slash white supremacist versus the heroic brown immigrant angle is not getting the kind of crowd reaction that they want. Couple that with the heel, Jack Swagger, having just got arrested for pot DUI, and you have a busted storyline for your second main event at the biggest PPV of the year.

108 A late good morning.

Obama has issued a PDF file for EACH of the 50 states detailing the scary effects of sequestration.  These are written in juvenile tone (aiming at the uneducated,  I suppose) and in Indiana we are being told that we risk losing teachers, early childhood education (Head Start), aviation safety and security risks, etc.

It is the biggest crock of crap I have read in some time,  and obviously they have been working on this for a couple of weeks.  Let me emphasize that there is a PDF file for EACH state on the White House web site.  Here is the link to Indiana's,  so you can see what I mean.  You can probably get to your state's file there by looking around.

Long term, all electorates vote full retard on occasion.  Those vacations from reality are all too tempting

Short term.....hmmm.   After the re-election of Senor Dumbfuck, I'd say there's a decent chance of that.  Pierre Trudeau's son Justin is currently looking to wrap up the Liberal Party's leadership campaign.  And he's possibly more retarded than Sir Shanksalot....with less competent advisors.

Yet, given the cult of personality fucktardery of Western electorates, and all those earnest, sweaty blowjobs from the media that tries to love him, he could possibly win a general election.

119 So this is kind of a fun, little story: "St. Louis Rams running back Terrance Ganaway, who earns the minimum rookie salary of $390,000, fills subs, wipes tables and sweeps the floors at Jimmy John's in Waco, Texas. 'I'm on the line that makes the sandwiches,' he told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. 'I bake bread, take the cashier spot. 'I had to sweep the other day. Clean the tables. I mean all types of stuff. Slice the meat. Wrap the meat.' He says he took the unlikely three-nights-a-week part-time job after joking on Twitter that he had too much free time and wanted a pastime to keep him busy. But one enterprising restaurant manager of the fast-food chain called his bluff and offered him a job - which Ganaway gratefully accepted. 'I just wanted to stay fit, stay out of trouble and really just try to save money and not spend a lot of money,' Ganaway told the newspaper. But the player, who played just three games for the Rams last season, said he was surprised by all the attention his new job has got him."

Aside from you guys in DoD, ya know what will be cut?  Fucking social workers going to the homes of mothers with infants (0-3 yrs) as part of the Early Head Start program.  WTF?  The benefits listed are things like activities so the kids are not watching TV.  WTF again?

When the hell did it become the job of the federal government to take care of infants?

And when did the feds take over funding of schools?  They didn't.. but if you listen to the lefty moaners, it's as if every school will close down on March 1st.

Well, I say fuck 'em... let's just see how bad things get.  We had furloughs here in Chicago a few years ago with whole departments closing for a day here and there.  No one even noticed!

1. HE proposed it and now acts like it's something that is out of his control.
2. Note how the "mental illness" threat is in there,  like thousands of crazy people are going to be turned loose on us.
3.  Also,  cuts threat old people, children,  and the military.  No mention of  Bertha, the rude agriculture department information clerk who sits on her rear and does on-line shopping.

154 Truman is right, the budget is cut, actual spending is unchanged. These fools have let the JEF think the US is going to lose everything Friday! Hi Truman! Rush said that at the Governors dinner Sunday night, Chris Christie got to sit ned to the JEF! Rush said guess, and I thought he'd say Deval Patrick, our governor, but instead the seat of honor went to Chris Christie. The JEF knows that Christie pulled him over the line to win reelection!

183 Have the Brass changed their tune since admitting that the US Military is in perpetual war, moving towards the draft instead of all-voluntary military? Last week, which member of Congress was touting the draft, sponsoring the bill, and the MSM highlighting women to be drafted in the soundbites?

Which of today's televised mouthpieces were of age to actually anticipate being drafted during the '70s Vietnam War protests? Brokaw's retired. That period saw US draft dodgers move to Canada, etc., given amnesty by Jimmah Carter years later. But were the draft brought back again, given the new authoritarian Laws/bureaus since Bush and Obama, the Burke-Wadsworth Bill ( June 20, 1940) won't necessarily provide precedence or standing for Conscientious Objectors.  And whatever wars the US remains embedded in perpetual conflict would at this point include Canada, being NATO. With NAFTA and the US Attorney General thwarting constitutional governance stateside, expect judicial compliance prosecuting according to PC authoritarianism that manifests whatever Big Brother enforces as "social justice".

Texas has new mental health legislation limiting the number of newly enrolled patients admitted into the mental health program per year to 12, and to close the State Hospital, and to farm out mental patients into private homes in groups no less than 3 per home. Tell you what, you give me all your money for a year, and I'll budget for you it the way DoD is being budgeted.  You'll get the same exact amount, but you'll have to put up with my budgeting methodology.

Let's say you make $50K a year.  I'll give you $100 a month for 11 months, and then I'll give you $48,900 in the last month.  Same amount right?  What's the issue?

Of course, you might resort to cannibalism by the 6th month, but hey, you'll figure it out.

That is in effect what's happening to DoD.  And if you really cannot see why that's a really bad idea in the area of national defense, then you're uneducable.

Both entities have budgets.  But in government land, if the organization has money left over at End of Year the next budget will be reduced.

So after eleven months of being good stewards of their allocated money, government entities will go on shopping sprees in September - new chairs, new furniture, new flat screen TVs for the conference rooms, and about a billion pens.

237 2.  mental illness

Precedence:

After World War I, and with another European war looming, leaders from the historic peace churches met to discuss how to cooperate with the government in order to avoid their difficulties during imprisonment experienced during World War I. As the United States prepared for another war, the historic peace churches, represented by Friends who better understood inner dealings of Washington D.C. politics, attempted to influence new draft bills to ensure that their men could fulfill their duty in an alternative, non-military type of service. On June 20, 1940, the Burke-Wadsworth Bill came before Congress for Civilian Public Service. CPS participants were financially sponsored by their home congregations, not by tax funds. Furthermore, all wages earned while working at private medical facilities, for instance, were confiscated by the government.

Understaffed wards at Philadelphia State Hospital had one attendant member for 300 patients, the minimum ratio being 10:1. The government balked at initial requests that CPS workers have these positions, believing it better to keep the men segregated in the rural camps to prevent the spread of their philosophy.

The CPS men discovered appalling conditions in the mental hospital wards. In an interview, a conscientious objector described his experience when he first entered a mental hospital in October 1942:

" It is sort of like a perpetual bad dream. The smells, the sounds of the insane voices, the bad equipment. The long, dark corridors. I tell you, it is all very much like a medieval fairytale of the nether regions. WeÂ’d heard about how these patients had been treated by the attendants, Beat with rods, you know, do all kind of things. We took a vow before we left the camp, we decided that we would not assault or in any way, strike a patient. I opened one of those rooms, and there was a man lying on the floor. I leaned over to try to see what I could do to minister to him in some way, do something for him. He may have been on a mattress or he may have been on the bare floor. No he was on the bare floor, because when I tried to move him, his skin came off. His skin was bloody and stuck to the floor and when I tried to lift him up it just peeled his skin off. He was in the last stages of syphilis. He died less than a week afterwards. Now that was my first introduction to what was badly needed in that institution. "

240 Received a Sequestration email from my Senator Mark Udall:

"Sequestration — part of the bipartisan and widely supported Budget Control Act of 2011 — was designed to trigger budget cuts so painful that Congress would have no choice but to set aside its partisanship and reach a deal.  However, a growing chorus of lawmakers now seems content to simply let these cuts occur, rather than negotiate a reasonable and balanced solution.
...
The effects of sequestration would not only ripple throughout our national security apparatus and overall military readiness...but also would hurt critical services Coloradans care about, including health, education, fire preparedness and protecting the clean air and water Coloradans hold dear. "

249 When released, On the Waterfront was a commercial and critical success, tamping down - if never fully silencing - the anger at Kazan for his HUAC testimony.

Cobb was also in Coogan's Bluff and the Exorcist. It didn't know that Cobb was an outcast for being an American. They should have cleaned out Hollywood when they had the chance. Starting with that no talent Burt Lancaster

256 I was at a briefing on the Hill yesterday, and the briefer from CSIS said, accurately, that "an asteroid is not going to strike the Federal budget on March 1st.  But DoD will look like one has by July 1."

And that's really the point.  Here's an example...and this is an actual example.

Let's say the Base Ops account (money to run military bases) is $8B.  And it's going to take a 10% cut.  So far so good.  Every sub account gets slashed 10%.

Only problem is that the utilities account is one of those sub-accounts, and it HAS to be paid - and it's $4B.  So now the 10% cut is not coming from the $8B topline, but instead from a $4B topline, because the utility bill MUST be paid.  Therefore, every other sub-account under that activity will be taking cuts on the magnitude of 20-30% in order to get to the 10% total.  A lot of these sub-accounts are vital functions, but are not mandated in law to be paid....like the utility bill is.

Here's another example....

We have to cut Military Construction by 10%.  No problem.  But you can't build 90% of a building.  So you'll end up taking a larger hit in MILCON so you can make your 10% cut.  That will end up being something like a 15-18% cut when it's finally done.

And MILCON is one of those areas that actively means jobs outside the front gate.

261 Tell you what, you give me all your money for a year, and I'll budget for you it the way DoD is being budgeted. You'll get the same exact amount, but you'll have to put up with my budgeting methodology. Let's say you make $50K a year. I'll give you $100 a month for 11 months, and then I'll give you $48,900 in the last month. Then let's change the way they budget. Virtually everyone here is pro-military (I have two nephews under 25 serving right now). But as your comment suggests, the military budgeting process needs to be reformed. You can cut 2% from any organization that is well run. There's no way you can honestly tell me that the military doesn't burn at least 2% in theft, waste and graft. I know better.

Let's say you make $50K a year. I'll give you $100 a month for 11 months, and then I'll give you $48,900 in the last month.

This is not just a problem in the DoD.   This is how government budgeting happens everywhere,  and   not all of it is the fault of the department.     If you happen to be in      a  government agency with a lot of contractors, then you KNOW how many of them leave their invoicing till the last possible minute.  Sometimes it's like pulling teeth to get them to spend any of the money they've been awarded    within the fiscal year.       So just as departments will spend relatively nominal amounts of money for the majority of the year, only to go on    spending sprees in the last few months, so, too, do the contractors they employ.

The whole system needs to be completely    overhauled.   It's a total    mess.

DoD has authority to move money around if it has to be re prioritized during the year.  But Congress limits, rightfully in my mind, how much of that they can do in any given year.  There are caps to the flexibility.  However, the sequestration cuts are so large, that that flexibility is reached before even half the cuts are taken.

THIS IS THE ISSUE.

Again, DoD CAN take the cut.  It SHOULD take the cut and NO ONE in DoD is saying otherwise.  All they are asking for is the ability to move money around without regard to the caps for this one year.

Since Congress is the one who put DoD in a tenuous situation, it seems that could allow some flexibility to accommodate that for this year.

But they are not - as it stands now.

As much as I like "Sequestmageddon", maybe we should take our cue from
the Weather Channel and start giving Obama's manufactured Crisis you
Guys! names, like Nemo and Sandy. Maybe we could call this one Percy.

Oooh, me like!

How about Gaylord?

295 Now, speaking of Robinson, DeMille showed some courage in casting him because Robinson had been named as a Communist by HUAC.

So being pro-commie is brave in Hollywood?

It's about being pro stupid. It's no different then as it is today. Commie loving is a product of stupidity

296 Was the commie party's goal not to over throw democracy? Did the commies in Hwd not answer to an agent from Stalin? Why should I feel sorry for them? As I understand it, those who renounced their dirty commie affiliations, were welcomed back into the fold and offered jobs. I do remember Lee J. Cobb being in some very good movies in the 60s and doing an excellent job. Poor Kazan was snubbed by the Hwd assholes including at the Oscars until the day he died. I don't know why they singled him out over others who cooperated. I remember those assholes turning their backs on him when he received a life time award.

297 Twelve Angry Men is being performed by my local civic theatre group. They have changed the title to "Twelve Angry Jurors." Men was so gender-exclusive.

I wanted to call and ask if they shouldn't make it "Twelve Marginally-Agitated Jurors," just to get that anger thing out of there.

298 Despite the heavily Democrat skew of the WWE's audience, the evil tea party slash white supremacist versus the heroic brown immigrant angle is not getting the kind of crowd reaction that they want.

Couple that with the heel, Jack Swagger, having just got arrested for pot DUI, and you have a busted storyline for your second main event at the biggest PPV of the year.

McMahon's story lines are worse than what a crackheaded monkey could come up with.  The only reason they ever work is the wrestlers sell them so fucking well; which is more than I can say about those dogshit movies that McMahon promotes.

I don't know how Okies have it worse:  Having to cheer for that choking dog Bob Stoops to poorly prepare the football team for every fucking big game they have or having that asswipe Swagger rep the school.

299 Now, speaking of Robinson, DeMille showed some courage in casting him because Robinson had been named as a Communist by HUAC.

--
Used to be.
--

Also, being named is not proof of itself.

For example, Adlai Stevenson publicly criticized J.Edgar Hoover's FBI inefficiency, so Hoover fabricated false evidence provided to Eisenhower's campaign against Stephenson for POTUS, smearing Adlai as a communist ONLY because he had provided a character reference for A.Hiss (self acknowledged democrat and communist but not a spy) who had served in FDR's administration and formerly been an aid to Chief Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes. (McCarthy might have more accurately smeared the late FDR himself as the communist. Irony of the hypocritical Nixon smearing communists when it was Nixon who enabled Red China to become what it is at US taxpayer expense.)

Public education today is poorly acquired, at best. And public opinion is shaped with the least amount of effort to study/recall history in it's making, as recent as 20th Century American living standards, and (unrealistic) expectations. The blatant permeation of revisionism today hardly benefits fair analysis of any topic.

Labor at the turn of the 20th Century did not have any benefits that Americans today ignorantly assume goes part and parcel with union membership. Even today, at least in right to work states, legislation protecting US Labor workers on the job is not necessarily enforced, construction site lack of standard enforcement (illegal alien cheap labor) setting stages for accidents and worker deaths. Furthermore, even with their union, miners have yet to enjoy such predictable union benefits as grocery clerks do.

As with any organization of people, unions have corrupted themselves just like the political parties have, as have governments and corporations. All function now to benefit the leadership while abusing the peopled resource of funds, regardless of duty, platform or promise.

300 Alger Hiss was a commie and was identified in the Vernona papers.  The FBI knew he was a commie but did not disclose it because they wanted the papers kept secret.

301 versus the heroic brown immigrant angle is not getting the kind of crowd reaction that they want.

Last week, Jerry Doyle discussed the recent poll proving your point. A poll of Democrats disapprove of the preferences that our government gives to the newly emerging majority of heroic brown immigrants.

Have 21st Century voters achieved majority rule by grass roots?

Leftists demand tax funded provisions for charity. Obama removed tax benefits for charitable donations. Now that rank and file Democrats see their taxes increased to provide for social justice, they begin to bitch.

Across the spectrum, politicians can afford to look "compassionate" so long as they get theirs, and the rest of us pay for it all, with nothing to show for ourselves but further debt inflation.

But hell, the coin "social justice" has yet to get dumped by the Left on its own doorstep. Baby steps...

Nah, the mind is dysfunctional. There's always a "reason" that used to be criticized as an "excuse" which was, once upon a time, inexcusable.

After what "is" is, Hillary: "I take full responsibility." "What difference does it make?!!!!"

If under oath, subpoena by Congressional committee, notice that it was not Hillary's legal position to be asking the questions, but to be answering, and no one challenged her on that, either.

302 Vic,

of Hiss, I wrote that he was a self professed democrat and communist. The charges he fought until his death regarded espionage.

"In 2003, retired Russian intelligence official General Julius Kobyakov disclosed that it was he who had actually searched the files for Volkogonov. Kobyakov stated: After careful study of every reference to Mr. A. Hiss in the SVR(KGB-NKVD)archives, and querying sister services, I prepared an answer to Mr. J. Lowenthal that in essence stated that Mr. A. Hiss had never had any relationship with the SVR or its predecessors."

Yes, I have seen that.  I have also seen the Venona papers that ID'd him. He was guilty as sin.

304 Hiss's case was a can of worms.

So is the federal government, full of corrupt politicians, more so now given social justice as policy.

But to claim that a person is whatever his opponent smears him with is not wise. Stevenson was no communist, the point which you've ignored.

Refusing to learn from the lessons of the newspaper in New York that tried this crap, the Arkansas Business Journal publishes a list of CCW permit holders (names and ZIP codes) for the ENTIRE STATE. Then, when the public understandlibly goes apeshit, they double down on stupid and promise to email the list to anyone that wants it. Deleting FB & Twitter comments as fast as they can.

The really interesting wrinkle to this is that the Legislature just passed and Gov just signed into law an act prohibiting this very thing. So someone's clearly itching to get reamed in the courts.

Many subscribers and advertisers are pledging to never do business with the mag, or any of its advertisers. Torching the company would have been too slow and messy, apparently. This is easier.
