Good morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.  Here's that Frank Sinatra story I promised you:

 
Sinatra had had a long term contract with MGM since 1944.  While he had made at least two decent movies with them -  Anchors Away and On The Town - his career at the studio was rather lackluster.  Personally, Sinatra was also a mess, his popularity declining as a new wave of postwar singers made their debut, his ferocious temper leading to an ever-greater estrangement with the press and his dogged pursuit of Ava Gardner destroying any ability to think clearly or judge his actions. 

 
It's that state of mind that brought Sinatra and MGMs association to an end in 1950, the studio announcing that they had come to a "friendly parting of the ways."  The trade papers noted that studio chief Louis B. Mayer had been patient with Sinatra's box office failures and lack of on-set discipline and had decided that the crooner was an expense MGM could no longer afford.  But studio insiders put Frank's downfall to an ill-timed joke. . .

 
It seems that one afternoon, a few actors were having lunch in the studio commissary when one of them brought up Mayer's recent injury; a devoted equestrian, he had fallen off his horse.  "Naw," Sinatra joked, "he really fell off Ginny Simms."

 
The table went silent.  Simms was a big band singer who was signed to MGM.  She was also, as everyone knew, Mayer's girlfriend.

 
A day or two later, Frank was summoned to Mayer's office.  From behind his massive white desk, the mogul effusively praised Frank; how he'd been an asset to the studio, how much Mayer enjoyed his company, how much, in fact, Mayer wished he had a son like Sinatra.  As Mayer went on, Sinatra recalled, his mind was spinning.  "Holy shit," he thought.  "This is it.  He's leaving.  He's going to give me the studio!"

 
"But Frank," Mayer suddenly said, "they tell me terrible stories about you."

 
"What stories?" asked Sinatra, still unknowing.
 
"That you tell jokes.  Terrible jokes.  Jokes about me and Ginny Simms.  They're lying, aren't they, Frank?"

 
Of course, Sinatra knew he was trapped.  He didn't dare admit that he'd made fun of Mayer's bedtime companion, but he knew he couldn't lie to the chief's face.  So he said nothing.

 
With a theatrical flourish, Mayer took off his glasses and wiped his streaming eyes.  "Goodbye, Frank."

 
And that, they say, was the real reason Sinatra wasnÂ’t welcome at MGM.

It's already hitting here, I have to take my 10 1/2 year old yorkie in for surgery this morning, she has a nasty growth on her eye, and most of her teeth have to come out. The pre-surgery cost alone was almost $400, Doc said the surgery will is estimated at 1K, and that's if all goes well.

So $1400 later, and I'll be bringing home a drugged up toothless dog, poor ol girl.

The story about a woman getting a ticket because she was driving two miles an hour under the speed limit is getting a lot of attention.

What they don't tell you in the headline is that she was driving in the fast lane on the expressway.

The ticket was inappropriate.  She should have been dragged from the car and beaten to within an inch of her life.  It would be hard to calculate how many people she has killed in her lifetime driving like that.

Hello everyone  from a warm night in Sydney Down Under!

Bad things to say as a joke.....many years ago a friend turned up at work an hour late with sunnies on and I said to her "what's up luv - husband left you?"

He had done exactly that - as it turned out he was a true mongrel of a bloke and he did her a good turn by leaving

Yesterday I was sent two surveys by the Boy Scouts...one was targeted toward the leadership (I'm on the leadership team of my son's Cub Scout Pack) and one geared toward adult stakeholders (read: parents of kids in the program).

The stakeholder survey was interesting, that it mainly asked if the respondent was a volunteer and had donated money to the BSA within the previous two years.  It also asked if the parent would continue being involved if the membership policy were changed.  Lastly, the survey laid out exactly what the policy is and asked for opinions as to whether a change would render the Scout Oath moot.

I'm hopeful that the BSA will continue with the current policy.  Incidentally, the policy isn't really an outright ban, just a ban against those folks who feel the need to tell everyone they are gay.  Plus, as an adult leader I'm required by the BSA to undergo a background check and take Youth Protection Training periodically.  I'm not sure how that training can be modified to include the homosexual element without either pissing off the militant gays or being so vague as to be unacceptable to concerned parents.  I said very frankly in my survey response that if the policy were changed, my kids would no longer be a part of the program.  Identity politics are horrible, and exposing 5-10 year old kids to them is outright evil.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles school district will pay millions of dollars to settle claims and lawsuits filed by students and families from an elementary school where a third-grade teacher was accused of spoon-feeding children semen in what he called "tasting games," lawyers in the cases said Tuesday.

District officials did not reveal the total amount of the settlement, but attorney Raymond Boucher, who represents several Miramonte Elementary School students, said each claimant will receive $470,000.

District General Counsel David Holmquist said the settlement covers 58 of the 191 claims and lawsuits filed by students and parents against the district after the January 2012 arrest of former third-grade teacher Mark Berndt on 23 charges of lewd behavior spanning five years at Miramonte.

A few of the cases involved another Miramonte teacher, Martin Springer, who was charged with lewd acts on a child in a case involving a second-grader that authorities said was fondled in class in 2009.

The accusation surfaced after Berndt's arrest, Holmquist said.

The 58 people involved in the settlement are all students, he said.

Prosecutors said in Berndt's "tasting games" he fed students his semen on cookies and by spoon, sometimes blindfolding and photographing them. Berndt, who taught for 32 years at the South Los Angeles school, has pleaded not guilty in the criminal case.

Those situations are also covered in Youth Protection training, although rather obliquely.  Basically as an Adult Leader you're required to not only make sure you're at least two deep with adult supervision, but that you're also watching the boys so that they don't harass each other.

esp. the "when is it due" or "is it a girl or boy" variety.

Read an article awhile back--can't find it now--about assorted "camping and lifeskills" organizations for children; some related to church denominations, some were really New Agey, some were co-ed. Many were nearly as old as the Boy Scouts of America. Point being that there were already organizations that offer opportunities to take kids camping, even if you don't meet BSA requirements.

But, of course, it isn't about "camping."  It never has been.  It is about public validation of a lifestyle that many do not see as normal.*  And, too, it's spite - "We'll show you, you h8ers!"  Witness the florist driven out of business because he didn't want to accomodate a lesbian wedding.  As the blogger Mark Shea says, "Tolerance is not enough.  You.  MUST.  Approve!"

*My opinion?  Gay or straight, I don't care.  But do not use your sexuality as a club to browbeat others into servicing you or allowing you into private organizations.

In response to the question waaay back: I do think there was an effort to form a parallel "gay-friendly" organisation to the BSA, which I seem to recall happening around the early 90s. Besides the announced intention to do so, I never heard anything about it again.

And I say this as a person who also knows very little about the functioning of the Catholic church.   At least I have the sense to admit that I    don't know anything.   But "journalists" are possessed of some kind of omnipotence after graduating from J-school that allows them to inately know and understand absolutely EVERYTHING   that EVER   happens ANYWHERE in the world    and    in space    beyond.

A bit OT, but a great, very brief  "feel good" moment last night.

In the middle of a time when every single freaking day seems to bring some kind of Obama/liberal arrogance, I have to tell you, this absolutely made my day.

I look at stories of possession much the same as I do any other supernatural or cryptozoological phenomena:  a good deal of it is bupkiss, but there are some that are very real.  The trick is in knowing which is which.

I was late jumping on board the Marshall Crenshaw bandwagon (back when I was being an insufferable jazz snob; a period of time I'm pretty fucking embarrassed by) until I picked up a cheap copy of "Life's Too Short" at a used place for next to nothing and then proceeded to scarf up everything I could get my hands on.  Outstanding musician with a great sense of humor.

We're doing this. Quality is OK depending on station and model of Roku, etc. We don't get any live-streaming TV locally, so that sucks. If there's anything big, like say 9/11 happens somewhere, we're stuck with the BBC pretty much.

There's plenty of content but you'll be surprised that after about a year you'll bitch about not being able to find anything to watch. Its not true of course.

It will change your viewing habits. You'll burn through a season of TV shows in a week, then switch to a season of something else for a time. And that's pretty much all you'll be watching. Because of that, it returns the TV to what it should be: A device that you turn on for occasional entertainment, rather than a droning center of the universe that never shuts off.

Did you ever hear about the "ether bunny" down at Ft. Hood back in the early '90s? 

I had a friend who spent a few years in the seminary in up-state NY in the 70's and he told me a couple stories he witnessed.   Evil is real and has a presence on this earth.

Simple solution:

Let the gay male scoutmasters be Girl Scout leaders and let the lesbian Girl Scout leaders be Boy Scout scoutmasters.

"I'd Love to Change the World" silly?  It's a conservative anthem.  "I'd love to change the world, but I don't know what to do/ So I'll leave that up to you." The fallacy of central planning right there -- no one knows enough to reshape society.  "Tax the rich feed the poor/ don't have rich no more."  The fallacy of thinking tax rate increases will increase revenue.
