Happy Monday.

This is one of those observations that will be completely true until it is completely not. That's what "revolutionary" means. I still want an S4.

Journalism is a deeply sexist profession, as are editors and publishers. At least, I think that's what this is telling me. Hey, I didn't make the rules; those misogynist journos did.

The French are preparing to pull out of Mali and that has folks wringing their hands about the place becoming a terrorist haven. Um, no shit. Unless you want to occupy it, you're going to have to live with the fact that third-world shit holes attract terrorists like shit attracts flies. Power vacuums will be filled, either by the good guys or by the not good guys and deciding to leave a power vacuum (or create one, *cough* Libya *cough*) is a conscious decision of the good guys not to exercise the extent of their power to prevent places from becoming terrorist havens.

This made me laugh.

3 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Monday, March 18, 2013. On this day in 1314 Jacques de Molay, the 23rd and the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, was burned at the stake.  They were guilty of being owed a great deal of money by King Philip of France.

5 The UN has revived the bogus gun grabbing treaty.  I posted yesterday that Obama says he will support it now. He had asked for more time.  He thinks he has support for it now.  He doesnÂ’t, but he figures he can make an end run around the House using the Senate to ratify an unconstitutional treaty.  He doesnÂ’t have 60 votes to bring it to the floor, much less 67 votes to ratify.  Of course he can do the other unconstitutional thing and enforce it without ratification.  He can do virtually anything he wants as long as they let him get away with it.

33 I read a lot of news and opinion from sources with overtly conservative bias, what liberals love to call 'the echo chamber'. But I also try to examine my assumptions from sources with a divergent point of view. Salon seems to qualify, so I go there from time to time. Today, based on a link from Instapundit (http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/165097/), I read the Salon piece by Ms. Janet Hardy, "My tantric 'awakening' turned me off sex." Boy, do they make it difficult for me to want to become a frequent reader. Ms. Hardy's bio says she's the author of an "underground bestseller", whatever that means. It doesn't mean that her book actually sold a lot of copies, does it? Like all lefty newspeak, "underground bestseller" means whatever they say it means without reference to any objectively verifiable truth. But not selling much has GOT to be the key or the words of literally no meaning. No matter what the "bestseller" part means, you can't really be "underground" if everyone knows about your work. And what professional writer would actually aspire to such a status? "If I get exactly one person to buy my work, I will be the author of the most undergroundest 'bestseller' of all time!" No. "Author of underground bestseller" says "Self-esteem trophy" to me. I guess marketing works. In the article, she writes that she's a 200-pounder, so I'm reasonably sure that the photo of the skinny screaming hottie attached to the article isn't her. Do Salon's editors so transparently objectify women that they felt a picture of the author was not good enough for a purportedly intellectual article? They have to hide the author's physical appearance when she writes about sex in their magazine? I'll be charitable. I assume they are enlightened souls who are totally down with the feminist struggle. I guess they must believe that their readership isn't as enlightened as they. So, instead of being misogynistic body-Nazis blinded by the Beauty Myth, perhaps they were just graspingly materialistic when they were chosing the picture to illustrate an article ostensibly about female orgasm. (Actually, it's an overlong screed beebling about 'tantric awakening' through 'kundalini' whatever, but the lead pull-quote says "like an orgasm times 100", so it's obvious what they're selling.) I guess the editors thought that a picture of a cute girl would get more eyeballs than one of an aging, overweight lesbian with a teenager's punk rock hair-do. But, hey, "eye of the beholder". Who am I to assume that the picture used is of a woman more attractive than the actual author? Look and decide for yourself: http://tinyurl.com/cxgcqzjPeople pay to read what she thinks? Yes. Me? No. I read her work on-line for free and still feel cheated. And I'm sure I would not want "The Ethical Slut: A Practical Guide to Polyamory, Open Relationships & Other Adventures" on my shelf where children or decent company might see it. But that book was popular enough to put her at #3,186 on the Amazon best sellers rank as of today. Who are these people, these buyers? I understand that the author's vote on election day and that of every one of her enfranchised devotees counts the same as mine. I'm guessing not many are casting protest votes for Ron Paul while awaiting the next Reagan. So then I think that I will never understand politics. I cannot understand how to persuade a large group of people with whom I probably have very little in common. I don't know how to speak to those who would pay actual money for a how-to guide on polyamourous BDSM gender-bending hedonism with a pseudo-intellectual eastern-tinged dollop of mystical frimfram sauce on top. But that's a two-way street, of course, and the personal is politicial. I'm guessing her readers might find my own commitment to a monogamous heterosexual marriage at boring, stifling or paternalistic, if not symptomatic of some active psychosis. My logic won't be understandable to them, because they couldn't be who they are if they thought about things the way I do. My best arguments could never be persuasive. Which only reinforces my political conservatism. I don't want them directing my life any more than they would want me directing theirs. I might misdirect their chakras or something. Famous 90s leftist philosopher Rodney King rhetorically asked us, "Can't we all just get along?" My answer: "Probably not. So instead, why don't we just be minimally courteous and otherwise leave each other be?" As for today's experiment in challenging my own assumptions, I think I'll return to my echo chamber. Even mere echoes of sanity beat the cacaphony of drivel.

Run a short advertisement for a billionaire who wishes to be King of his own shithole.  Give him the status and treat him like the King of Zumunda in "Coming to America".

Good morning, fellow members of this award-winning Smart Military Blog.  I hope you all had a great weekend.

No matter how big a star you might be, itÂ’s a rule of thumb that you will, at some point, make a bad movie.  Usually these days, the stars themselves choose the property (think of Warren Beatty in Town and Country or, classically, John TravoltaÂ’s dream project Battlefield Earth, to mention two), but in the studiosÂ’ heyday, a star could be thrown into any film regardless of whether they were suited to the material or not.

And so it was with Clark Gable and 1937Â’s Parnell, the biography of the famous Irish politician.  The King didnÂ’t want to do this movie, and it shows.  Never really convincing as a historical figure, Gable gives a poor performance, looking petulant instead of passionate, his costumes awkward and constricting.  He sounds about as Irish as Marlene Dietrich and even his love scenes with co-star Myrna Loy lack the Gable fire.  Parnell was a critical and financial flop, and its poor reception was one of the reasons Gable fought so hard against being cast as Rhett Butler, which he saw as yet another disastrous “costume” part.

GableÂ’s wife, Carole Lombard, enjoyed teasing him about Parnell.  Once, when Gable was bragging about being named the worldÂ’s greatest actor, she had flyers printed up reading ‘If you think Clark Gable is the worldÂ’s greatest actor, see him in Parnell.  YouÂ’ll never forget it.Â’  She wanted to hire a plane and drop the flyers over the MGM lot, but finally settled for having two out-of-work actors hand them out in front of a local theater.

And thatÂ’s it for me this morning.  Hope you all have a wonderful day.

It is very true that "nation-building" is a totally worthless exercise in countries with populations that are not ready for self rule.

Even the most backward people understand the concept of an absolute ruler.  No votes, no rights, just existence and subservience.  Maybe in a hundred years, with the right leadership, they will be ready for the transition, but not now.

59 45 Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at March 18, 2013 07:12 AM (zF6Iw) I remember a story about Gable which happened a few months after Carole Lombard died in a plane crash during a war bond drive. Gable always sat at the head of the table at the MGM commissary, and after Lombard's death he disappeared for several months, mourning her loss. His chair was placed up on the table, out of respect where it remained until one day when the king returned. As he entered the commissary, you could hear a pin drop. He walked silently to the head of table, put the chair down and took his seat. I'm told there wasn't a dry eye in the place. He died in 1960 at the age of 59 shortly after filming "The Misfits."

They have no interest in live and let live. The consolidation of uninterrupted power won't allow it.

75 My guess is it's porn for those with good imaginations. Sort of like my prvate times with my Moms Harold Robbins paperbacks when I was a teen. OSP, that reminds me of a story of the mid-70's. A buddy sleeps over and leaves one of those "heaving boobs with hard nipples, throbbing member" books at my house. (we're each age 13). My Mom, the German Lutheran Minister with a penchant for "The Apple Stick" to the back of the legs finds it in my nightstand. She screams from off camera, "Is this your book? Where did you get this book?" My quick thinking at that moment has served me for the rest of my life. I replied, "What book? Let me look at it." Pastor Mom yells, "NO. NEVER MIND!" Case closed. Never mentioned again. Back to MAD Magazine.

Yes and no. The reason we had such a long primary this time is because in 2008 everyone complained that the primary was too short. They said then that the primary was unfairly weighted so that whoever got early traction (McCain) would get the nom without any of the later states even getting a chance to affect the outcome. So they changed the primary process to make it more deliberate, to last longer.

Now everyone's pissed that the primary lasted so long.

Go figure.

Haven't read this in detail, but Gabe (on Twitter)
seems to be preaching amnesty as one of the solutions to the R branding
problem.

Anyone who thinks that I "preach amnesty" simply hasn't been paying attention to anything I've written on the subject of immigration ever.

That we have problems reaching voters because of the tendency of certain members of our coalition to screech "amnesty" any time the topic of immigration comes up is self-evident. That we have a problem reaching voters period is self-evident. Finding out how to overcome that problem is the purpose of the RNC autopsy report.

150 147 Gabe,

Hey Gabe when can I just walk across the border to Canada or Oz?

Letting 10 million guys named Juan be defacto Mexicans with US votes is not a smart play.

Maybe that simple skeezer should ponder if her fishwrap's size being reduced to that of a strip mall flyer has anything to do with sending dumbasses like her to cover CPAC.

No shit.  This is what amazes me about the RINOs and such who think letting these people in is such a good idea.  Having grown up and lived around these people all my life, I can tell you that, as a group, they are in no way conservatives, certainly not in the way we think of conservatism.  In fact, they are just the opposite; FSA-type lefties with their hands out.  Why do you think most of them who are nominally eligible to vote in this country voted for Obami?  (Especially given that they otherwise don't like him because he's half black; oh yes, Latinos don't care for Blacks, any more than Blacks care for Latinos.)

The RINOs who support letting the illegals in are either complete idiots or are in league with the Commiecrats.  Can't quite figure out which...

155 "...tendency of certain members of our coalition to screech "amnesty" any time the topic of immigration comes up is self-evident"

The fact that you used the relentlessly media- imprinted, benign sounding  term "immigration" rather than the actual situation of "ILLEGAL immigration" or" illegal alien migration" pretty much indicates your mind set on the topic.

156 Oh, FFS, Lebron, Hrothgar used the term "immigration," and I simply used the same word he did.

How   about  taking   the   first   primaries   away  from   states   that   vote   democrat   in   the   General?   Why   should   Democrats   get   to   choose   the    Republican   candidate?   If   they    want   to   be   first   they   need   to   earn   it   by   showing   that   they   pick   winners,   not   losers.

160 Since Pope Francis is desiring to make the Catholic Church about the poor, is there a church I can go to that is for mankind as a whole, not just the poor? Additionally, I must act if do the poor bear any responsibility at all for being poor? Any? Or is it all societal conditions? Is everyone "rich" evil? Did anyone ever become prosperous legitimately, ethically? If not, why should mankind bother at all with anything beyond subsistence agriculture? Should we go back to such a state?

I think the church that has the most outward opulence might wish to get a little more unity in thought and action before it presumes to start lecturing about the poor.
