15 The left has one goal - advance their agenda. If the Constitution stands in the way, go around it. If they need to, use it as camouflage and cover. If they lose elections/referenda, go to the courts (now stacked). Subvert the will of the people and impose your agenda no matter what. We cannot fight fairly when the other side cheats and refuses to accept defeat by legal and legitimate means.

17 13 Posted by: Icedog at March 28, 2013 07:04 AM (9ScGj) It's about process. DOMA has absolutely nothing to do with federalism/states rights., yet this is the argument the left is using (falsely), and our side is falling for it. I might agree with you that states rights might be used in future against the left since they are hiding behind it now. But it presupposes that we have leaders who are clever and ballsy enough to do so. Ted Cruz and possibly Rand Paul. Who else? Meanwhile, while we are obsessing over genitalia at the SCOTUS, we are about to get reamed on AMNESTY.

Morning, fellow ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Time for your friend MP3 to kick things off:

Even as both the Fox and Warner studios were debuting “talkies,” Hollywood heavyweights were certain they were, at best, a dead-end experiment, and at worst, a fad.  “Speaking movies are impossible,” the legendary director D.W. Griffith intoned.  “When a century has passed, all thought of our so-called ‘talking picturesÂ’ will have been abandoned.”

But it wasnÂ’t just the idea that the technology was impossible which drove the opposition to the “squawkies;” there was an artistic opposition as well.   Actress Mary Pickford insisted that adding sound to movies “would be like putting lipstick on the Venus de Milo.”  After the silent picture had been driven to extinction, director King Vidor looked at the wreckage around him; he had believed that “talking motion pictures would never take the place of silent film.  It was unimaginable to some of us, because silent pictures were an art form complete unto themselves.”

We have no way of knowing, but itÂ’s likely that all three were in the audience the night of December 28, 1927, when The Jazz Singer opened in Hollywood.  The audience sat stunned through the eighty-nine minute film, staring at the screen in astonishment as Al Jolson, after a spirited rendition of the song “Dirty Hands, Dirty Face!”  burst out with an unscripted ad-lib that entered movie history:  “Wait a minute, wait a minute!  You ainÂ’t heard nothing yet!  Wait a minute, I tell ya, you ainÂ’t heard nothing.  You want to hear ‘Toot, Toot, TootsieÂ’?  All right, hold on.”

At the end, as thunderous clapping brought the houselights up, Frances Goldwyn, wife of the producer, remembered looking around at the celebrities she had come to know over the last few years.  Years afterward, director George Cukor remembered her telling him, “I saw terror in all their faces – the fear that the game they had been playing for years was finally over.”  There was a great buzz of excitement in the lobby as the theater emptied out, but she was certain there was dead silence in every car driving home.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

24 Hey MPPPP.  Due to a random generated pulp fiction title yesterday I wrote this...   should I feel proud or worried??

Title was The Seventh Courtesan

"Sluggor cracked the Seventh Courtesan, who was named Moonlight Rain, to reach his ultimate goal. For he sought the Queen of the Courtesan Corps. If he conquered her, he would be forever famous and powerful. Thus when Moonlight Rain fell all was revealed for Sluggor. The multiple panels of fine silk in pastel shades and gold thread parted to reveal the Queen in her own boudoir. With a powerful stride and the sweat of recent sex dripping off him he went to claim his destiny. She had a body both voluptuous and sleek he could see, it was barely encased in pale pink silk and languidly laid out across silk pillows. Her face was veiled in rose colored silk so all Sluggor could see was the soft doe brown eyes pulling him forward. He reached her side and went to one knee, with a trembling hand Sluggor lifted the face veil away to kiss the Queen imagining soft lips that would welcome him.

That is when the screaming started. For the visage hidden under the rose colored veil was that of a hag with deep wrinkles and leathery skin. The soft as petal lips became those of chapped brown leather while the imagined pearl white teeth became the sharp teeth of a barracuda. Sluggor tried to break free but her arms had the strength of five men it seemed and they held him in place. As Sluggor fearfully shut his eyes at the approaching teeth all he could think of was the warning of the Wise Man of the Mountain he had consulted before embarking on this quest - 'Watch out boy she's a man-eater.' Then Sluggor knew nothing else of this world."

40 USS Freedom IIRC has one or two 57mm guns that are optically aimed via video cameras.  There is talk of a small anti-ship missile called Griffin for them, range - the same as the 57mm gun.  Does not compute.

Another technical hurdle is the Seahawk launched remote equipment is too heavy for the SH-60.

43

What were those stages of opposition?

That's a long post, Anna, and maybe J.J. can answer while I'm gone.  Much of the opposition came simply from the fact that available talkie technology was awkward and unreliable (sound on film had not yet been invented).  As well, the silent drama conveyed atmosphere much better than sound could (or still can, IMO - watch Nosferatu or The Passion of Joan of Arc - those films would be incredibly diminished with sound).

Now, apologies, must run.

45 As far as DOMA is concerned: Never trust a Democrat I forget how and why exactly DOMA was passed, but I am sure it must have been some compromise and the Dems backed it to get something they wanted at the time. And as usual they knew, when it was convenient for them, they would go back on the deal. Kinda like how they just raised Taxes on the top Bracket and now want more. Fuckin liars and cock suckers ( perhaps in this case "cock suckers" is a poor choice of words).

56 33 Interesting stuff, MPPP. I hadn't realized the attitude of silent film actors was so different from stage actors. No one thought silent stage plays were a good idea, did they? Posted by: Retread at March 28, 2013 07:18 AM (zxitI) Although "The Jazz Singer" was in instant smash, ironically the studios themselves didn't know how to cope with the new technology from a production standpoint. Film cameras made so much noise that they now had to be enclosed in giant boxes known as "black moriahs." Also, the ambient noise from shooting outdoors interfered with the recording so it necessitated the construction of massive sound stages (ironic since the film industry moved westward essentially to be able to shoot virtually 365 days a year because of the weather!). But because of all this, the innovation and beauty of the camera work suffered because the cameras couldn't move as a result of the added weight of the sound proof booths and the cameramen inside. So, essentially, they were forced to shoot wide static shots encompassing an entire stage. It was like filming a theatrical play. Deadly dull to look at on film. Once soundproof camera motors were invented, all these problems were solved. So sound initially almost killed the very art form it would soon revolutionize. And many actors who were superstars in the silents sounded terrible in the talkies and their careers vanished almost overnight. See John Gilbert. "Singing in the Rain" is a fun film to watch because it really is about this period in film history.

USS Pegasus stats: 1 76mm gun in enclosed turret and 8 Harpoon missiles.
USS Freedom stats: 2 57mm guns and 0 Harpoon missiles.

88 Blessed "Maundy" (commandment) Thursday-New Commandment-that we love one another. We don't just celebrate that Jesus gave us communion but that it's the "New Covenant" in his blood. Every time Jesus mentions communion he says "New Covenant in my blood", He has released us from our sins, and all peace, redemption and salvation come from Jesus the perfect mediator between God and us. The church belongs to God and was purchased by his blood. If we lifted us precious Jesus we wouldn't be divided as a church. We would not have a failure to recognize Jesus. The church would not be about politics or prosperity. We would not argue about whether Jesus is "Really" in the bread or cup or whether it's s symbol because we would not rain on anybody's precious understanding of Holy Communion. We would see that we are one in Christ because of the "new covenant" From the internet: JESUS blood is the key, is the way, is the NEW Covenant! When JESUS shed HIS blood, we were ushered into the NEW Covenant! GOD gave the old and HE gave the NEW. The old was wonderful but the NEW is even better!! The old had purpose the NEW has purpose. GOD himself decided that the NEW was needed and HE did what was needed for us to be able to live, move and have our being in HIM, now and for eternity because HE planned for and gave the NEW!! May everyone who celebrates Holy Communion be aware of the "New Covenant" in his blood. It's not just generic blood. May you blessed as you celebrate these Holy Days.

102 WhatÂ’s the matter with Americans?

The economy is getting better (or at least itÂ’s not getting worse), stock markets are up, up, up and Washington is ooching toward the first full-year budget deal since 2007. The sequestration scare has for now faded into the stuff of late-night comedy punchlines, unemployment is drifting back down to 2008 levels and home prices are zooming up.

By conventional political wisdom, people should be happier and more optimistic: higher net worth, better job prospects and more fiscal certainty. But instead, pessimism and dissatisfaction are on the rise.

Average disapproval of President ObamaÂ’s job performance is up 6 points since itÂ’s post-re-election low and, more ominously, concerns about the direction of the country are skyrocketing. Republicans, Democrats and Independents alike are growing increasingly concerned about the direction of the country.

Yeah, you can have the deed to your house put into joint tenancy with anyone--gay partner, child, cousin, boarder--and write and file a will to do the same with the rest of your assets.  But planning ahead...when you're so special you don't have time for that.

And I think what they want is retirement pay-outs from third parties...Neil Armstrong's widow gets his pension; Sally Ride's partner doesn't get hers. As someone who isn't getting anyone else's free shit, I'm not particularly sympathetic.

Royal Mayo, a lifelong resident of the Ohio city that gained national infamy following the rape of the girl by two Steubenville High School football players, says that attention should be focused on the role of the young woman, whom he calls the "alleged victim," saying she was drunk and wanted to go out with one of the football players. 133 The entire JSF boondoggle we are dealing with can be traced back to the 'Peace Dividend' Bill Clinton forced on the US.

Clinton accelerated the downsizing of the post Cold War military and its supporting contractor infrastructure.  Which is why McDonnel-Douglas exited the military aviation field and sold all its planes to Boeing.  Northrop-Grumman.  And Lockheed became Lockheed-Martin or Lock-Mart.

BuAir had in the pipeline a plan for hundreds of F-14Ds.  A-6F with F-18 engines to replace the A-6E TRAM birds that dated all the way back to Vietnam.  Instead the peace dividend struck.  And so did the A-12 fiasco.  So BuAir found it very short of cash and a cheapskate Congress.  A-6F was scrapped.  Then the idea of hundreds of F-14Ds.  So they resorted to black arts, MDD conjured up a totally new plane, but to get funding MDD and BuAir called it the F-18E Super Hornet.

So by Darwinian process that limited number of contractors and money available for each new project, options became limited.  And with limited projects and people needing employment, things started to really go off the rails as people made JSF the TFX Second Coming.  Multi-service, multi-mission, and multi-national.  So JSF is rapidly coming to the point where someone has to step up and do what Admiral Tom Connolly did about the F-111B to Congress, "There is not enough thrust in Christendom to fix this plane."

160 As crisis-ridden Cyprus proceeds with a bank restructuring program that will take as much as 40 percent from large account holders, most of whom are Russian, the Kremlin has made an about-face and supported the plan. Commentators wondered how Russia could go along with a restructuring that would cost its citizens an estimated four to six billion euros. The reason may be simple: The biggest Russian account holders already have gotten most of their money out of this island tax haven through a gaping loophole, according to some reports. The Story is at Fox News: So Russia got it's money out. I guess it is better to be feared than respected, but us Morons here knew that anyway. To bad the idiot in the White House doesn't know that

If kids want to form their own groups to play at recess, that's different, go ahead and allow that.  But forcing kids into it is just giving the bullies a free pass to do physical harm.

171 Icedog, the earthpig was hardly sexy.  And it took them to go through the A, D, and E models before they got an effective one the F model.  And then they cut production of the F model due to costs.  So the USAF had two wings of -As, one wing of -Ds, one of -Es, and one of -Fs.  The cockpit layouts and avionics of all four of those models were not interchangeable.  The -Ds tried to project the aura they were real fighters because they carried the M-61A in their bomb bay but their Mk II avionics were completely unique to them and always suffered malfunctions so had the lowest mission availability rate of any Aardvark.

And in the late 90s the USAF got rid of the EF-111A Sparkvarks.  So they then had to hitch a ride with the Navy EA-6B Prowler.  And now the US Navy is still trying to get into service the F-18G Growler which is supposed to replace the EA-6B.

199 @81 Sven This is not a white flag on the SSM issue. What we're experiencing here in MN is interesting: 1. 2012 State amendment declaring marriage as one man and one woman fails 53-47. Reason: citizens do not want marriage definition legislated. 2. 2013 State legislature is bringing bill legalizing ghey marriage. State polls against it 57-43. Reason: citizens do not want marriage definition legislated. And this is a state with arguably a 60-40 pro traditional view on marriage.

238 Anna, the EF-111s are the only models I got to see up close IRL. They always looked like something a comic book cartoonist would have drawn for a military jet. The AF did hint at converting some B-52s to fill this role (EB-52s), but seems like a strange airframe to use. I think the AF decided to pursue stealth instead of replacing that capability. But I believe we do have a few joint USN/AF units with EA6Bs.

275 The following is not trolling, not a "pooh" dropped by Winnie just to drop one, but what I consider blunt reality when it comes to the two parties: To wit, when it comes to our two political parties, your local GOP simply will not accept anyone if they are not Christian, outright Christian. Do not pay attention to any lip service to the contrary, they simply won't. You can be Einstein, Jefferson, James T. Kirk--it simply does not matter. They'll just wait till something comes along in a package they more prefer. That's if your'e lucky. A whispering campaign is more likely. I hate to say this, but this kind of GOP needs to lose, and to lose hard. If you ever wonder about media bias, don't, because you might need to consider those doing the biasing have a good idea where they might end up in a 100% triumphant GOP world. Nowhere. It's hard for them to care about fairness after that. As for our Democratic friends, where the GOP locals demand conformity in identity, the national elites and their local zampolits demand conformity of position. You can be anything you wish to be, but you better believe in positions x, y, and z. And they will be far more vicious than the local GOP types in tyrong to terminate you. A pox on both houses. The cause of Liberty needs better, and while it has a shelter in the GOP, I am not sure the local GOP is a natural home. It's just what there is to work with. My take, at any rate. Up yours if you don't like it.

307 Increasingly, since the Northern disdain for States Rights, in this century with the current "unprecedented" administration, State laws no longer have standing, States are no longer recognized, and citizenship's meaning is limited to the "right" to pay taxes. (Tax means whatever, SCOTUS.) Last night on PBS, Big Brother's propaganda ministry announced that there must be a singular application of federal authoritarian law across the board that can not tolerate variances per State in this Union. Whether regarding marriage or anything else, whatever policy Washington chooses to apply as if legal overwhelms anything "constitutional". We saw it with illegal immigration being rewarded with the most obscene "blessings" from the Potus, releasing criminal aliens carte blanche from US prisons on sequestration tickets funded by the American taxpayer. And those law enforcement officers (Sheriffs) who've promised to uphold the Constitution (ex.: not confiscate guns at Washington's whim) have cases being brought against them by Obi's AG Holdit according to last night's alphabet-network newscast. DHS Napolitany targeted them years ago for observation as terrorists. the land of the free and the home of the brave Mandatum maudy

I do indeed.  My disdain for academics knows no bounds.  None.

You could take them to the street of any city and point out the tangible effects of their theories and they STILL wouldn't recognize them.  It would not matter how many stories you documented or how much objective data you generated, they would call it a lie.

Academia is a disease.  Freudians used to say that if you could not understand Freud it was because you too were sexually repressed.  Academics run the same exact game just so that they never have to dwell in reality.  If you don't see the truth of their theory....you're just not as smart as they are.

Those polygamous communities also exile their young men, the "lost boys" of fundamentalist Mormons. Gay marriage activists in AZ "deplore" the polygamists' tax fraud, as if vindicating their own plot to siphon tax benefits. FDR's social security ploy certainly laid the grounds for national bankrupting lawsuits. Gays pay taxes, and would argue that they've been funding/sponsoring heterosexual social security survivor benefits all along; unfair, if gays can't have the same benefits. And given this SCOTUS, gays will rule the day. Given sequestration, you'd think "No New Benefits". maudy

394 MP3, I was watching "Strangers on a Train" the other day with my 15-year-old son (aka "The Young Man Who Notices Things"), and he pointed out to me how much of Hitchcock's film vocabulary was taken from silent film. Case in point, the opening scene showing just the characters' feet. Or the cropdusting scene in "North by Northwest". Or the staircase scene in "Psycho". This shouldn't be surprising, considering that Hitchcock started directing in the silent era; but it did surprise me that it should be so obvious, once my son pointed it out to me.

396 Hi all - Happened across this site after searching on "prohibited (from owning a firearm) persons" and coming up with Ace's February 4 piece on the subject. http://minx.cc/?post=337180 where he goes through all the bullshit categories on can fall into to become "prohibited" - meaning no guns or ammo at all, or ten years federal time if you have so much as a live round of ammunition. The monster category numbers-wise is marijuana users - 40 plus million adults total, maybe 2.5 using medical cannabis. The main gun bill - S.649 will be taken up after the Easter recess and the bill's title specifically says that it is all about preventing prohibited person from acquiring guns. So - is there ever going to be a better chance to expose the unconstitutional overkill that means *no* 2nd Amendment rights for tens of millions of Americans? Probably not. I say every congresscritter, every gun rights organization, every gun grabbing organization should have to go on record with a straight up answer to the following: "Do you believe that, as defined under existing federal law - 18 USC 922(g) - that *all* consumers of marijuana, as "prohibited persons" are with without 2nd Amendment rights and properly considered felons if they are in possession of *any* firearms or ammunition?" and take it from there. The Reid/Schumer/DiFi bill ups the ante by targeting anyone who might, even unknowingly, transfer a gun to a prohibited person. From Gun Owners of America: "The Veterans Gun Ban (S. 54), which will certainly be in the underlying bill, is horrible. It creates a 15-year prison sentence for negligent sales, negligent gifting, and negligent raffling of firearms. Given that 150,000 law-abiding veterans have had their gun rights taken away (without due process) -- and given that all marijuana smokers and medical marijuana smokers are prohibited persons whether or not on the NICS list -- you would sell, gift, or raffle a firearm only at your own risk..." http://gunowners.org/congress03252013.htm Serious about this stuff? Better now than when DHS assault teams are rolling up your street in their spiffy new APC's...
