Good morning, gentlefolk.

Immortality project?

MKH writes a must-read. We really could use more writers of this caliber.

Rick Wilson, who is a good guy, pushes back after being slammed on the Rush Limbaugh show.

The food stamp map. Alaska, eh?

Have a happy Easter, and see you next week.

Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

In the Golden Age, many stars had nicknames: John Wayne was “The Duke” and Clark Gable “The King.”  Myrna Loy, for a year or two atop popularity polls, was “The Queen of Hollywood,” but that really didnÂ’t stick.  Lana Turner began her career as “The Sweater Girl” while Ann Sheridan was “The Ooomph Girl,” a nickname she loathed.

And in Los Angeles around 1913, there was a 17-year old girl named Reatha Watson.  Originally from Washington, young Reatha and her family were living in Los Angeles when her half-sister showed up one day with a somewhat louche character named C.C. Boxley.  The two convinced Mr and Mrs Watson to let the lovely lithe Reatha come with them on a trip to Santa Barbara, but it seems the two might have had more nefarious motives; after three days, Reatha was convinced they werenÂ’t going to let her go home.  The Watsons must have had suspicions too, as they swore out a warrant against Boxley for kidnapping.

Reatha managed to make her way back to Los Angeles, where she was picked up by the police on suspicion of loitering (a more genteel way of saying ‘prostitution.Â’).  The presiding judge dismissed the charges and told her to go home, saying that she was “too beautiful” to live on her own.

When the stunningly lovely Reatha managed to break into films in 1920, a press agent (possibly Hearst writer Adele Rogers St. Johns) dug up the old ‘loitering’ story and gave the judge’s warning an exotic twist: Reatha Watson – now known as Barbara La Marr – was “The Girl Too Beautiful to Live.”

Sadly, La Marr seemed determined to live up to her nickname.  A frenetic lover, she married five times, expressing her love of sex and boasting she slept no more than two hours a night.  She loved to party and was seen at all the Hollywood nightspots; very often, her makeup artist had to slather on the base and powder to cover up a nightÂ’s debauchery.

La Marr also had a crippling cocaine addiction.  Gradually, it took over her life, and despite various stints in rehab, she could never shake the drug.  She finally died on January 30, 1926 from tuberculosis.  She was only 29.

Here she is:

And here she is again:

37 From the MKH article:
Merely asserting things will work out doesnÂ’t overcome the logistical and economic obstacles the bill is encountering now that it has left the fevered minds of legislators and entered real life. And, hoping everything will work out also doesnÂ’t help those who were relying on the presidentÂ’s already broken promises of lower premiums and keeping their own insurance.

38 @31: Wilson bases his piece on the now-discredited claim that evangelicals didn't vote for Romney, which makes me wonder how good the rest of his data is. 78 Rush has been talking about political consultants and their greed based self licking ice cream cone business for some time. It pretty much rings true to me. I don't know of any six plus figure jobs that don't require actual positive results (except for lawyers and politicians). I would believe that a political consultant that agreed to get paid 2% of his total fee for every state that voted 51% for his candidate might have some financial interest and belief in his candidate's positions and abilities. I don't think Wilson would ever take a consulting job with those terms. I think he is for sale, just like the politicians he and his ilk have helped to elect time after time!

Oh, far from it, Anna.  If that sort of thing interests you, you might want to read the book Dangerous Curves Atop Hollywood Heels, a collection of short bios of "hard luck" actresses from the silent days.  One who isn't in the book is Florence Lawrence, who was really the first "movie star" in our sense of the word.  Unfortunately, she badly injured her back during a stunt and had to retire from films.  When she tried to return, she couldn't get any decent roles.  She finally committed suicide in the 1930s by eating ant paste.

82 Rick Wilson's error ... and Gabe's... is that they only see one side of the issue. They don't see things from the perspective of social conservatives who see gay marriage as yet another betrayal by a party that uses them to get elected, but doesn't do anything for them once in office. If Republicans were smart, they'd be trying to find some *other* issue they could work with social conservatives on, instead of just saying, "Shut up and eat our shit sandwich, or you'll have to eat someone else's shit sandwich." Consultants like Wilson are like a middle-aged guy trying to impress some hot young thing (gays, independents) and while he's doing that, totally neglecting his wife (the base).

Posted by: Gregroy of Yardale at March 29, 2013 04:06 AM (QXlbZ)

83 I agree 100% with Rick Wilson's article. Except with one crucial part. While GOP turnout was low (I thought Gabe was trying to claim it wasn't?) it wasn't because of evangelicals. In fact evangelicals came out and voted for Romney by larger margins then McCain. Those that didn't turn out were younger, lower income, white men who were registered Republicans in blue or swing areas of the country. They were also the ones who sat out 2008. Everything else I agree with.

92 Can't say I'm very impressed with Rick Wilson's pushback. Like most consultants, he seems to see data as the End All Be All instead of a tool. And Evangelicals sat out the last election? Obama grew his coalition? And "Romney was 100% right on abortion and gay marriage and damn near everything else"?? I have no idea what Rush said about Rick Wilson, but I'm gonna go ahead and surmise by the full-of-shittedness of Rick Wilson's response that whatever rush said was right.

I have said and said that consultants are a big problem in the GOP.

Yes,  they are sometimes necessary,  but who are consultants to tell us what to believe?  For that matter,  the same goes for Rush Limbaugh.

Why aren't any of the people asking the basic question about SSM:  Religious freedom is already under attack,  and SSM will be the hammer used to smash it; where are the guarantees that religious people will not be forced to bow to the will of the state?

That is the issue, pure and simple.  It's a basic first amendment question and it coincidentally is a dandy wedge issue.

How's everyone feeling today?

Meh.  Half the office is out, so I feel like taking off early, but if I do, it only means I'll have to come in at some point over the weekend.   I've got busywork / paperwork I could do, but I don't want to touch that, either.  I wish I could be writing, but I've just decided to throw out half my book, so I'm a little down on that, too.

I think I'll grab another cup of tea and hang out here for a while.  Boss won't be in for another hour, anyway.

It's been four days of boiled dinner, Reuben sandwiches, corned beef hash, fatty slices fried hard as imitation bacon, and I think the leftovers are regenerating in the fridge faster than we can hack them down.

Spring Break finds me with a viable plan to finish the rest of the semester's reading and getting ahead on labs while the dilettantes headed south.

I'm kinda shocked at how well my quizzes and recitations have been going. Now that I'm finally on subjects I'll actually use for the rest of my career, rather than courses I needed to round out an application for admission, I'm retaining everything. Except water. (Ashley, babe, call me for tips.)

Before my evangelical friends get too far into the “we'll take a walk” political blackmail, here's a bit of tough love: you took a walk last time, and Mitt Romney was 100% right on abortion and gay marriage and damn near everything else. You might want to spend some time changing hearts and minds in society at large before you bolt. You might want to keep this fight where you can win it, rather than trusting in the Federal government to deliver your desired endstates...that's the other team's strategy.

So fumes from a heavy duty marine/industrial coating are slowly seeping into my office.

Basically as it now stands since Allen has the space for a physical plant we are going to get a proof of principle shop set up.  I hectored and cajoled him into setting up a paypal button and banged his tipjar with the same ben Franklin to start that I gave the Ewok last week IIRC.  Allen has been encouraged to start with .38 special loads for the press.

I was busy the last few weeks so I am not actually too active at the board or over at his blog but the long term goal of which we hope to aid ANY moron who wants to use the resource is to lay the groundwork for a nice workshop and get morons of good character the groundwork to go into gunsmithing and or reloading.

My personal ammo press setup cost around 600 but it's been a bit.

There is a definite market for niche caliber rounds.

Man, my brain is fried - the actress was Olive Thomas, who killed herself (by accident or on purpose, no one knows) by drinking mercury bichloride in 1920.  It was a prescription medicine for her husband's syphillis and the coroner believed she mistook it for water or a sleeping potion.

She was a Ziegfeld girl, and there's a legend that her ghost haunts the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York.  Perhaps she does, but I never saw her there.

Here she is, as painted by Alberto Vargas:

The great and the wise persecuted and took Him, subjected Him to frightful torments, treated Him as a slave, and put Him to death between two malefactors, having preferred to give liberty to a robber, rather than to suffer Him to escape. Such was the life which our Lord chose; while we are horrified at any kind of humiliation, and cannot bear the slightest appearance of contempt. But Alaska has 15% "American Indian and Alaska Native persons," which are dependency classes if there ever were some. There are two ways for a state to become heavily dependent on government largesse: (1) being under Democrat local political rule (but that goes without saying), or (2) even with Republican local rule having a very large percentage of a racial or national origin demographic that falls within the Democrat identity/government dependency classes, e.g., MS, LA. Speaking of which, it's not a coincidence that the states with the very lowest food stamp ratios are ND, WY, UT. Politics and demographics have consequences.

211 Wow, I think I'm the only one who showed up for work today.  Lots of choices in the parking deck close to the door.

Speaking of which, I have to share a story with y'all about something that just happened not 5 minutes ago that could have been extremely embarrassing and awkward.

So, I drive into the parking deck at work and park my car and proceed to head to the stairwell that leads into my building.  Inside the stairwell, there is a small flight of stairs, about 6 or 7, leading up to the keycard access revolving security door that is halfway between deck floors.  I open the door to the stairwell and turn left to start to go up the flight of stairs when I just notice someone in front of me, bent over on the stairs.  It was a co-worker of mine, she was bent over tying a shoelace.  She's an extremely attractive Egyptian girl, who looks like she could have launched fleets and had Pharaohs fighting over her 4000 years ago.  I almost rear-ended her while she was bent over!  Luckily, I caught myself and apologized for almost knocking her forward into the stairs.  She laughed and apologized too for not finding a safer place to tie her laces.  She didn't expect much traffic this morning.

Embarrassing crisis averted!

I don't think it's really all that fair of a point, actually.  Like Breitbart believed, the fight is just as much cultural as it is political.  Limbaugh did a lot to make conservatism cool.  Ricky trying to say Limbaugh's criticisms are suspect because he only "works in a radio studio" is just a stupid way to try and say Limbaugh has never seen the elephant.

He's wrong.  Not only has Limbaugh seen the elephant, he packaged the elephant, made the elephant cool, and revitalized a dying medium in the process.  3 hours a day, every day, for years.  It's easy for mercenaries like Ricky to try and disparage that, but in my book going out in the culture wars and succeeding via objective metrics is more impressive than working for RINOs.

Vis a vis the point about how Limbaugh doesn't benefit as much when the Rs are in charge, well, I think he was actually doing pretty well between 2001 and 2008.  It's a popular theory that his success hinges on elections, but I don't think the data bears that out.  Besides, Limbaugh had plenty to rail against when W was in charge...

235 I'd go further and say that Rush benefits politically when the Republicans are in the wilderness, because it makes him more edgy and gives him more to rail against.

It's a fair point.

Except that it's not.  He had *plenty* to rail against during the W. administration, and he first became nationally big during H.W.  Hence his own statement: "My success does not hinge on who wins elections".

That's like claiming Ace was secretly cheering for Obama because MOAR HITS.

I get his point that you can't build a coalition based on controversial stances, but at the same time you can't build a coalition by telling people "sod off we don't agree with you" repeatedly.

His argument is it's own contradiction "this is a controversial issue, so by taking stand X we lose voters." Incidentally, by taking Stand Y we also lose voters.

Even though I don't care if gays "marry", Rick Wilson is an example of everything that is wrong with the GOP.

I've never met him, but judging from his article he's a weak minded buffoon cut from the same cloth as Steve Schmidt.  One of the dozens of "professional" political consultants who define where the party is by the way they stack up to what the liberal media defines as the pressing issues of the day.

Considering the real issues, the economy, unemployment, national security, healthcare etc., what are we even doing wasting time on gay marriage?  Idiots like Wilson allow these things to become national issues by taking them seriously.

My point is....where the hell do the FiCons/Libertarians have ANY credibility to preach to me?  The truth is that they and the NeoCons (which I also WAS....not so sure any more) have done more to damage the R brand than the SoCons EVER did.

I live in Wisconsin with a SoCon / FiCon governor, thank goodness.  I have no illusions that this will hold for any length of time.  My focus is not on fitting in and going along so that my life remains as trouble-free as possible.  My focus is not on what is politically expedient.  My focus is doing the right thing as I understand it to be, and not surrendering my conscience for political gain, as is my choice to do.  I am not unaware of the cost that might be required of me.  I have been taught to expect this may come, from the time I was a little child.

320 ATTLEBORO, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – From a toy gun to a butter knife, a new controversy has arisen over an item a student brought to a local school Wednesday. Morgan LaPlaume, a Wamsutta Middle School student, was simply trying to cut her fruit for lunch because she has braces and can’t take bites out of whole fruit, says the LaPlaume family. During lunch, the vice principal happened to be walking by when he reportedly saw Morgan with the butter knife, took her to his office, and issued her a suspension. The school’s principal told FOX 25 that the vice principal was following the rules set forth in the handbook which does not allow kids to bring knives to school. The principal added that parents and guardians are asked to sign that handbook at the beginning of each academic school year. Melissa LaPlaume, Morgan’s mother, says she signed the handbook, but the rules should not be so broad and that other factors should be taken into consideration before a suspension is issued. I remember bring an inert WW2 Hand grenade my Dad had to school often. Nobody cared. Now a days i guess I'd end up in a Federal Jail?

I don't see abortion and SSM as the same issue, but these issues both effect the same group within the Republican party and/or conservatives: people of faith. The Dems will also treat SSM in the same manner as abortion, namely, forcing it down religious institutions' throats (e.g. HHS mandated birth control and Plan B).
I think the greater issue when it comes to abortion is the value of human life. If you look at what's happened in the UK with NHS, you see an overall devaluing of human life in the form of the Liverpool Care Pathway (being applied to the elderly and defective babies).

363 (UK Telegraph) The photos appeared in the state-run Rodong newspaper and were apparently taken at an "emergency meeting" early on Friday morning. They show Kim signing the order for North Korea's strategic rocket forces to be on standby to fire at US targets, the paper said, with large-scale maps and diagrams in the background.

The images show a chart marked "US mainland strike plan" and missile trajectories that the NK News web site estimates terminate in Hawaii, Washington DC, Los Angeles and Austin, Texas.

I think I had a five year stretch where not a single candidate I voted for for any office won. It was sysiphean to the point of exasperation, but I justified participating because even the tiniest potential nudge away from Left ism is worth it. If all I could get was one conservative city councilor, that would be worth a straight-ticket vote. Not voting as a symbolic act has appeal, but when that symbolism results in material aid for the Left, it's not worth it.

How about this: the Government should not be in the business of encouraging risky behavior. Not discourage, just stop encouraging. If you want to engage in high-risk factor activities (I ride a motorcycle) fine, but the government needs to stop encouraging risk.

Buying a house and marriage are encouraged by the government as generally good for society. The "rights" associated with marraige have been instituted to support and encourage marriage.  Homosexual male sex (and it is ultimately about sex) is unequivocally risky and the results are unarguably harmful to society.

There are lots of arguments to be made about whether other aspects of homosexuality (psychological, role models in childhood developement, etc.) are also risky, and everyone who studies it seems to have a bias that makes them focus on or throw out specific data to support thier posisiton (BTW, that's not science), but male homosexuality is risky and should not be encouraged.  Specifically should not be encouraged the way marraige is encouraged.

I think a pro-life position is just generally more philosophically defensible.  Currently the SSM pushback is "what two people can't make their own decisions" (or some crap.)

While I don't like that line of reasoning, it's admittedly hard to cast oneself as the party of freedom when you're busy making rules.

Abortion is less riddled with that problem if you can get people to accept the initial premise that it's a life (which more and more people I think are buying into.)

But that may be my own personal biases.

Frankly I'm just sick of hearing about SSM, at what point do you just get out of my fucking face?  My biggest opposition right now is to hearing about it nonstop, I just want to be left alone.

Are the polling numbers made up?

Do we have to unskew numbers now on this?"

You tell me.  The recent poll was from WashPo/ABC.  At this point, I don't believe a single thing coming from the MSM.  They're also trying to convince us that suddenly vast numbers of the American people support gun control, even though the evidence on the ground is that this is NOT the case.  Why should it be different with gay marriage, which is just another brick in the left-wing agenda?

If there is one truism we need to understand, it is that large numbers of people do NOT suddenly shift one way or another on some issue in the space of a few months.  This simply does not happen.  It hasn't even happened on gun control, despite Aurora and Newtown and the constant coverage these got.  Yes - the population's views on an issue can change, but this is gradual, over the course of years or even decades.  Not three months.

Face it, even in the states where gay marriage was approved in November, it ran several percentage points behind Obama's performance in those states.  If gay marriage really enjoyed the support of nearly two-thirds of the country, then it would not have gotten the lagging numbers it did in these uniformly deep Blue states.

Did Maine, Maryland, and Washington approve gay marriage (and Minnesota refuse to amend its constitution to affirm traditional marriage)?  Yes.  Is this indicative of an epic sea change on the issue?  No.  Hithertofore, most all of the 32 states that have voted against it have been Red states.  It's only now that the Blue states, which had been lagging, have finally started weighing in.  The only state to change has been Maine - and that barely, as Maine had the closest margin of all in favour of SSM.

After that CVS health insurance story a few weeks back about the company requiring workers to report if they are smokers, i.e. engaging in unhealthy activities, so their insurance might go up, can we expect the same thing to happen with workers' sexual preferences? Theoretically, wouldn't a gay person potentially require more medical attention in the future due to an increased risk of HIV? In a single payer system, if the gov't is providing health care, you can bet it has an interest in what people are doing.

Yo, AnnaP!

Heh.  In college, whenever someone would knock on my dormroom door I'd invariably answer,  "Yo yo, wassup?" instead of, "Come in!"   The looks I   used to get were hilarious.   Just try to picture a so-white-she's-virtually-blue NH girl with big, curly hair    and a very Irishy-Britishy face    putting on a "homegirl" accent and saying,  "Yo yo, wassuuuuuuup?"  to other whitebread NH   college students.

It was fun.

427 I became a Republican after discovering C-SPAN radio. Hearing what was actually happening instead of just the selective soundbites provided by the media (this was during the Clinton administration). I went from apathetic/Dem by default to Republican. Then 9/11 sealed the deal.

433 For MWR,

"Sluggor took a sniff and then a deep breath that swelled his leather clad chest until the armor strained to keep his muscles constrained.  The air smelled of green plants growing as the breeze carried the scent from the tilled fields beyond the battlements to where Sluggor now stood.  The breeze also caused the tri-colored pennants affixed to the gleaming spear-points to snap briskly.  The spear shafts themselves were made of a dark hardwood that did not bend in the wind, each spear was fifteen feet tall and driven butt first into the sandy ground.  The spears formed a large box and inside that box stood all of this year's candidates to brave the Courtesan Trials.  Sluggor dismissed them out of hand, he knew he would be this year's chamption."

438 408 Question: Assume SSM is recognized. The answer is no. The reason why is "shut up". Two Vacations In One Week: Obama Girls Go From Bahamas Vacation To Idaho Skiing GetawayÂ…

Good grief.

I can count the number of times I went on a "vacation" when i was Malia and/or Sasha's ages on the fingers of one hand.  I'm not going to begrudge them the chance to get the hell out of DC    and away from their famewhore father and fat mother, but I'd appreciate it if their     fucking parents made even a handwave     at     decorum and optics and sent the girls to the frigging Poconos or something.    Not every     vacation has to be to some lavish resort    that the hoi polloi can only dream of visiting.      Jeezy Creezy.

Of course, look at who their parents are and what their parents do and... yeah.   Spitting into the wind.

449 Coulter was making the same point recently. If we can regulate smoking and your quantities of soda and the food you eat because (thanks to the socialized medical system) we're all 'community property,' then sexual practices should be on the list just as high. well i watched dems lie like a son of a ... after our troops went to Iraq, i watched them deny they had any ideas of ousting Saddam during the Clinton reign  with the Iraq Liberation act  (clinton's)  i watched them undermine  the guys and gals out there putting their lives on the line Their Lives!

up to that moment in time i had not realized what lying shits they were. Unfortunately i also watched reps  start buckling under like  weak kneed  dopes.

Now i wish that the Republicans would quit playing softball and fight back, If they don't i owe them about as much loyalty as they show the country.

When your 28 year old administrative assistant marries her roommate cause roomie can't get a job in obamaeconomy but needs health insurance who ya gonna b!tch to over your jacked up insurance premiums? These new marriages are not so fiscally conservative cause down the road those two - admin asst and roomie - are gonna demand new rights for extra cash under new definition of a redefined word. 471 If Rick Wilson simply said that the GOP has to find a better approach on issues like gay marriage and abortion, I'd agree with him. I think the current approaches and public image that gay marriage opponents put out are in need of serious improvement. But the 'evangelicals' thing was either a lie or stupidity. And it sounds like he doesn't want a 'better message' on this, but to have issues like that dropped entirely.

Assignment for Astronomer Neil DeGrasse Tyson:  Resolve Fermi Paradox.

Hint: a paradox requires that BOTH side of it be apparently true.  A paradox is not a paradox just because climate scientists, OOPSIE - I mean "astronomers", DECLARE that one side of it is -  true.

Another hint: Understanding that they may be to us as we are to ants is a good start.

Final hint:

Ant 1: "Holy shit look at that completely un-ant-like being that is looking at us and is like 10,000 times as large as we are!"

Ant-stronomer: "My religion does not preclude the existence of such huge beings, and in fact we think they probably exist.  But the fact that you see them, and you are a bitter clinger, while I am a Big Fucking Astronomer, means that they cannot exist.  Try to keep up."

I hope you non-elites could follow that.
