Happy Monday.

How special interests (in this case the beef lobby) beat the sequester.

The number one complaint about the GOP -- from Republicans, from Democrats, and from independents -- is that the party is "too inflexible" or "unwilling to compromise." The second-most common complaint from Republicans -- though not from Democrats or independents -- is that the party "gives in too easily." Eesh. There are some other veeeery interesting findings in this poll; take a look.

Happy Easter Monday, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  HereÂ’s a story about Lauren Bacall:

When she first came to Hollywood, she, as a young starlet, was expected to make the rounds of parties.  Bacall didnÂ’t like this, however, because everyone at the parties drank and she didnÂ’t.  One night, the director Howard Hawks (who was her “sponsor”) invited her to a party at his house, only to be irritated that he had to drive her home.  “WhatÂ’s the matter with you?” he snapped.  “CouldnÂ’t you get someone to offer you a ride?”

“I don’t get along too well with these people,” Bacall admitted.

Hawks thought for a moment.  “Are you nice to them?” he asked.  “I try to be,” she answered.  “Well, donÂ’t,” Hawks told her.  “Try insulting them next time and see if you do any better.”

Came the following Saturday night and Bacall was again a party guest at HawksÂ’ house.  When the party ended, she told the director with a smile, “IÂ’ve got a ride home.”

“Good for you,” Hawks said.  “What did you do?”

“Just what you told me,” Bacall answered.  “I insulted a man.  I asked him where he got his tie.  He said, ‘Why do you want to know?Â’  I said, ‘So I can tell other people not to go there.’”

“Who was the man?”  Hawks laughed.

Bacall smiled broadly.  “Clark Gable.”

Now IÂ’ve got a long meeting to head off too.  I might be back later; if not, I hope you all have a wonderful day.

The second-most common complaint from Republicans -- though not from Democrats or independents -- is that the party "gives in too easily." Eesh." There's a lot of Republican Derangement Syndrome out there. Bad demographics and a retarded media/academia class. 27/7/365 Republican bashing adds up. Monkey see, monkey do. Garbage in, garbage out. Then there's the giant neon elephant in the room. On the right side (and putative right side) of the spectrum the incessant GOP hatred is a function of Protestantism. Ask yourself this question: why are there so many Protestant factions? When Protestants don't get exactly their way they nearly instinctively split apart into smaller groups. A lot of people out there in Zombieland can't separate their religion from their politics and vice-versa QED.

And then they go out and apologize through so-called "outreach" to different voter blocs who will never vote for them in a billion years, and in so doing they turn off the base. I think you're right in substance, but wrong on one point. The R's that succeed in getting into gov. and running the party are the ones that are good at getting things done. (campaigning, financing, etc.) and now their job is to legislate. It is only natural that they use their power to do things. The ones that think that gov. should get out of the way are not running for office, for the most part. I think we have to change what people think about gov, from the bottom up. starting with the schools. We need our own long march through the institutions to reclaim lost territory. Meanwhile, let it burn.

Here's the money quote from the "poll":

"Sixty-one percent of Republicans say they like "nothing" about the Democratic Party, matching the percentage of Democrats who say this about the GOP. The 35% of independents who say they like nothing about the Democratic Party is also roughly equivalent to the percentage of independents with nothing positive to say about the Republican Party."

Background checks for private sales have gone into effect for NYS.

Dealers have to interpret that part of the statute on their own, so they're charging anywhere from 10 to 70 $ for the check, lock, and maintenance of records. Some are refusing to do it at all "due to liability".

I think the answer is to get a metric fuckton of gun owners to just trade guns off the books. One day, one week, one month, whatever. Ruin all the records.

Posted by: Sean Bannion at April 01, 2013 04:17 AM (b24G3)

92 Okay. Let's say we want to put together a gold-played GOTV effort staffed entirely by paid operatives. I'm going to use my town as an example of what it would cost. The warm body problem: Between two people to work strike lists per precinct; one in the morning one in the evening. Each polling place needs an additional person to coordinate with the call center. So, two people per precinct, plus one for each polling place. We need two people to make phone calls (or one motivated person) to call the folks who haven't voted, starting at about 3 o'clock. We need one person to drive, in case people need a ride to the polls. In Seekonk, it works out like this: 4 precincts = 8 people 1 polling place = 1 person 2-3 at headquarters = 3 people 12 people total with two alternates = 14 people $75 pay for each = $2100 max Plus one meal and snacks = $140 Total $2240 for a Seekonk town election That's two grand to get our whole slate of candidates the maximum possible turnout. During bigger elections, you could split that cost between 4-5 candidates, or possibly get the whole thing picked up by the top of the ticket. Is this a good expenditure? In many or most towns, it's an excellent expenditure I think.

154 We're sending our big, bad, invisible F-22s to South Korea to "scare" the Norks. Ok fine I know the F-22 is the best fighter in the World but if it is such a weapon that all it has to do is show up, how come obama shit canned it as soon as he came into Office?

This is a special exception circumstance.  The husband was nursing the wife's foot surgery recovery and watched all 3 seasons in the space of 2 weeks, as he sat with her while she was disabled and could not walk.

So....

Back in the olde days, the proper Ladies were all upstairs in their fancy clothing.  The staff was downstairs and out of sight.  The two hardly crossed paths, except for the head staff members who served the Ladies and Gentlemen.  I think Ms. Upton would be better suited as a character downstairs just for the fact that she would be dressed up as a maid.

The NORKs supposedly have thousands of artillery pieces prepositioned to hit South Korea in the event of hostilities. How good is the South Korean counter-battery capability, and if they are any good, how long will it take to be effective?

Or....is it quicker and more effective to use air power (A-10s I guess) against the artillery?

Counter-battery fire will do very little good against the NORKs.  Their artillery is bunkered in so deep we can't easily get to it.  However, that works to our advantage.  Because it is bunkered in so deep, it is essentially immobile.  After any initial penetration, the NORKs will lose their fire support.  It will be much like the Egyptians in '73.  As long as they stayed under their AA umbrella, they were fine.  Once they f***ed up and got out from under it, the Israelis ass-raped them.

Truman North, delighted to know you're from Seekonk!  It is one of my all time favorite places, forever.

About 20 years ago, my husband and I were making the annual trek to visit his parents in MA, with our first infant, an extremely colicky girl (who turned out just fine).

There was some collossal cluster**** on 95N in RI, which had us marooned miles between exits for hours with a screaming baby in the summer heat.  We had plenty of water, etc, but that still doesn't address the screaming, nor does it address the fact that once things started to move late late late in the day, there's nowhere to GO in RI even if you get off 95.

When we crossed the MA line we hit the first exit, and some sweet young kids running a fast food there on the strip in Seekonk closed just a little bit late so we could grab a bite, clean up, feed the baby and get going again.

They couldn't have been nicer after that day from hell, and every year since when we get out of RI I see the sign for Seekonk and feel love in my heart.

(it is also the place where, one year in weekday rush hour traffic, we saw a guy travelling about 75 doing a wheelie.  Amazing.  But I love Seekonk, and always will.)

Re strike lists and etc. There is a natural antipathy among conservatives, I think. The mindset is that social issues are just that, NOT political issues. The Left have been extremely successful in using the rule of law in non traditional ways, converting every single issue to a political/legal question.  Conservatives haven't grasped that these assholes are committed to altering the way we live, and like it or not, we have to take the battle to their turf, and adopt the same ruthless and relentless methods that they have. It runs against the grain though...

driving 97 mph in a 55 mph zone and reckless driving, said 1st Sgt.

238 There I was, posting award-winning comments on the headlines thread, when I realized there was just me, approximately. So I'm playing "where's the horde?" It would help if the horde wore red-and-white striped shirts and hats.

240 Look at Holder pursuing law suits v. various States. As if the federal authorities in office give a rats ass for what Texans or any State's residents think, feel or want when it comes against "official policy" particularly when local opinion supports constitutional governance, the antithesis of federal policy today. An alarming sound bite spread by authoritarians in office and the media is the necessity for 'UNIFORMITY' meaning to only recognize federal law and federal policy, to completely dissolve States' constitutional purposeful existence. From a supposedly kinder, gentler thousand points of socialist lights to Obama's inaugural "One Voice" meme. You name it. Educational curriculum, abortion, sodomy, marriage, gun control, health care, insurance, whatever, federal laws are/will-be the only laws recognized by those with the most power. And try to argue for Constitutional Governance? You'll be smeared as a racial supremacist evil anarchist (wink wink 'libertarian' y'no) by your fellow citizens who self righteously promote PC ruin, no hill worth maintaining except SQUIRREL! blah blah. Next, expect to be attacked by a federal agency that has fabricated a case for prosecuting the measly likes of you for supposedly making someone feel uncomfortable (another hate crime). Even the judicial process for US citizens is outdated at this point. Terminated by eo for 'being there' because that's what "is" is. To be. Innocent until proven guilty? Once upon a time... /An aside, when little Nork Kim named "Austin" amongst his targets, it seemed as if he was given permission by this administration's State Dept. to make a lesson of Texas, to terrorize Texans. Ridiculously ridiculous "joke".
