Happy Tuesday.

Allahpundit wrote the post, so now I don't have to. Evangelicals have been telling a story about how they were lukewarm for Romney and would have turned out in greater numbers if only the party had selected a candidate that was stronger on values.

The point of this story -- and, indeed, Huckabee's point in this instance -- is twofold: (1) lay some blame for Romney's defeat; and (2) threaten the GOP with future defeats unless evangelicals' demands are met. The problem with the story (as Allah discusses in some detail) is that it is not true. Evangelicals had a larger share of the vote in 2012 than ever before.

Which brings me to another myth of Election 2012: the claim that the election demonstrated that the GOP needs to change policies to attract new voters. I've been writing since November (see here and here) that the party has a messaging problem, not a policy problem. The chart accompanying the second claim here makes that point.

We're still going round and round about Election 2012, btw, because the first step to solving a problem is to identify the problem.

Some other news, Vermont is the first state to post the prices for insurance bought through its shiny new Obamacare exchange. "[A] family of four with an annual income of $32,000 would end up paying $45 a month out of pocket. A single person with a $40,000 income would pay $317 a month." Taxpayers, you know who's paying the difference.

I made some noise about this news story yesterday on twitter. The claim, made in the headline and repeated in quotes and paraphrases, is that the sequester is delaying cruise ship debarkation and the passengers are really mad about it. Only, if you read the story, you'll note that it is entirely based on hearsay. They "heard" that sequestration has caused the number of CBP officers to be reduced, which is forcing them to stand in line. Who'd they hear it from? Oh, some other people.

Did the reporter bother to ask DHS if the agency had reduced its workforce yet? Of course not, because if the reporter had, the story would have had to explain that sequestration-related furloughs haven't started yet. Oh, and you know what? CBP is now saying it might have no furloughs at all.

Good morning, 'rons and 'ronettes.  I haven't felt like I've been giving you good value for money lately, so grab a big olÂ’ cup of coffee or tea, settle down and, in the immortal words of Tom “T Bone” Stankus, pilgrim, tighten your shorts and sing like the Duke:

Many people don't know that Mel Brooks' first choice for the role of washed-up gunfighter The Waco Kid in Blazing Saddles was John Wayne.  Reportedly, Wayne loved the script but turned the role down, saying that if he portrayed a character so outlandish, he'd lose his fans.  And the Duke knew about losing fans - he almost lost them all because of one movie.

It all started in 1955, when, dropping by the office of producer Dick Powell on the RKO lot, Wayne began reading a script called The Conqueror.  The story had originally begun life the year before under the working title of "The Genghis Khan Story."  Under Howard Hughes' erratic leadership, RKO - the studio responsible for King Kong, Citizen Kane and the Fred Astaire / Ginger Rogers pairing - was losing money right and left through Hughes vanity projects like Underwater!, Jet Pilot and Vendetta.*  Hughes finally decided to cut his losses and go out with a bang.  A script came from the pen of writer Oscar Millard ('stylized, archaic English," he called the dialogue), Powell was set to produce and direct and Marlon Brando was in negotiation to play the bloodthirsty Mongolian chieftain.

Then Wayne read the script.  In 1954, he was the number one box office attraction in America.  He owed RKO one more picture, and after reading The Conqueror, he was sure this was the one.  "The Conqueror is a Western in some ways," he told the press.  "The way the screenplay reads, it is a cowboy picture and that is how I am going to play Genghis Khan.  I see him as a gunfighter."  All well and good, but gunfighters didn't generally sport Fu Manchu mustaches, inches of yellow makeup and black lacquer eyebrows, all of which found their place on Wayne's face when shooting began.  The lovely Susan Hayward was cast as Bortai, a Tartar princess whose very being inflames Khan with lust, and found the entire experience a hoot.  "Me, a red-haired Tartar princess!  It looked like some wild Irishman had stopped off on the road to Cathay."

Filming began in Utah, near the town of St. George, the scenic canyon lands surrounding the village being a Hollywood replacement for the Gobi Desert.  Almost immediately, cast and crew began dropping like flies in the 120-degree sunshine.  When writer Millard flew out to Utah for some script changes, he found the set in utter disarray, having nearly been wiped out by a flash flood.  As for the Duke, Millard sneered, "His performance drunk or sober was the way other actors tend to perform if drunk."  Millard's petty comment was made shortly after Wayne's death, but by that time, everyone knew that it wasn't just Wayne's complete unsuitability for the role of Genghis Khan that had doomed The Conqueror - it was Millard's ridiculous script.

Imagine Duke Wayne, with his Western drawl, trying to keep a straight face while telling Hayward, "Yer beautiful in yer wrath!  I shall keep you, and, in responding to my passions, yer hatred will kindle into love!"  Or when, after Khan's right hand man Jamuga says of Hayward, "There is no limit to her perfidy!", Wayne is obliged to reply, "She is a wuh-man - much wuh-man!  Should her perfidy be less than that of other wimmen?"

Had Brando taken the role of Khan, say film critics Harry and Michael Medved, "The Method Man. . .(might have lent) a touch of high-camp intensity to Oscar Milland's mock-Shakespearean lines."  But Wayne's effort was doomed from the start.  The Conqueror was budgeted at $6 million.**  An additional $1.4 million came from the pockets of Howard Hughes himself, funding a PR campaign to lure audiences in.  But even with Wayne's name attached, The Conqueror barely managed to eke out $4.5 million in business.

Having run RKO into the ground, Hughes sold it.  One year later, he spent $12 million dollars to buy back the master prints of two of the 700 films in the studio's library: Jet Pilot and The Conqueror, withdrawing them from circulation.  According to aides, for the next twenty years, if the eccentric mogul wasn't screening Ice Station Zebra, he would watch The Conqueror.  By himself.  For hundreds, if not thousands, of times.

"Maybe he just really enjoyed it," you shrug.  And perhaps you're right.  But there's tragedy attached to this movie; a tragedy which makes you wonder whether Hughes actually bought back The Conqueror out of a sense of guilt.

You see, in 1953, the government had exploded eleven nuclear devices at the testing grounds of Yucca Flat, Nevada, a mere 130-odd miles away from little St. George.  Known as "Operation Upshot-Knothole," the cumulative effect of the blasts spread radioactive fallout through the region, but the federal government assured both the film crew and the residents of St. George that the tests were not a hazard to public health.  So the movie's cast and crew spent their shoot unknowingly "frolicking through atomically charged dust storms" and eating contaminated food and water.  To make matters worse, when shooting moved to Hollywood, Hughes had sixty tons of the poisonous dirt shipped to a sound stage for retakes.

Since the filming of The Conqueror, nearly half the population of St. George has developed one form or another of cancer.  Of the 220 people who worked in Utah on the production, 91 were known to have contracted cancer and at least 46 to have died from it.  John Wayne, Susan Hayward and Dick Powell, too, all fought long, losing battles against cancer.  By 1974, when Agnes Moorhead (who played Wayne's mother Hunlun in the movie) was diagnosed with uterine cancer, rumors had already begun to spread through Hollywood about the "death movie."  "Everybody in that picture has gotten cancer and died," she told her friend Jeanne Gerson.***  Reportedly, as Moorhead was dying, she moaned, "I should have never taken that part."

And until his own death in 1976, Hughes locked himself away in a room illuminated only by one flickering light, watching The Conqueror over and over and over. . .

Now, thereÂ’s a story.  Hope you enjoyed that, and I hope you all have a wonderful day.

*RKOs only real hit during the Hughes years was The Outlaw, but it was a sideways success.  Hughes had been grooming actor Jack Beutel for stardom, but it was buxom Jane Russell who captured the world's attention and reduced Beutel to the status of a trivia answer.

**making it, in cost conversion, a little short of the $40 million spent on Michael Cimino's legendary disaster Heaven's Gate.

***who herself played Hayward's nurse in the movie and would die from breast cancer.

Otherwise, they will likely see more elections similar to the 2012 outcome. The good news for the GOP is many of those voters are conservative and are people of faith.”*** No. I'm tired of having this bullshit shoveled at me. If they were conservative they wouldn't have voted for the communist. And no, Mexicans are not conservative, given that they flout our laws to get here. You can shove that myth while you're at it. Democrats are smart enough to message using straw men and to focus on what they are for.

"We democrats are for civil rights."  -  this means republicans must be for slavery.

"We democrats are for education"  -  republicans, on the other hand, must want the poor to stay stupid.

Although it's a simple method of painting your opposition in a bad light, our consultants haven't learned how to do this.

Then we completely ignored the lessons of '08 and nominated another McCain in '12, with some idiots buying the line that it was Gov. Palin that cost us the '08 election.

By '16 the liberals will be telling us that it was Ryan that cost us '12, and we should nominate another moderate to appeal to the center.  The worst part is a lot of Republicans will buy it.

You can use the anti-war movement as an example. 8 years lying about how much they hated war, how evil warmongering Bush did blah blah blah. Then the minute Obama is in office war is cool and they all stop marching. It was all a fucking lie. You can't convince those people of shit, this is all a game to them. Logical points, being fair, compromising, those are all fucking things they have no care for.

Typically, cartel operatives are not U.S. citizens and make no attempt to acquire visas, choosing instead to sneak across the border. They are so accustomed to slipping back and forth between the two countries that they regularly return home for family weddings and holidays, Riley said.

We lost on the black and Hispanic vote who went Oshit by 95% and 70%

Romney lost by a lower margin than McShitty did.

70 J.J. Sefton.  On this day in 1982 the Argentinians seized control of the Falkland Islands.  Britain under the leadership of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, with some support from the US, launched Operation Corporate.  The mission of the Royal Navy task force centered around HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible was to retake the islands and return them to British control.

The British military did succeed in liberating the islands.  Though the cost in men and material was not something to be dismissed lightly.  Argentina's conscript army was quickly routed by a smaller but professional military the British fielded.  It also helped that Britain had air superiority over the islands.  After the sinking of General Belgrano, ex US light cruiser Phoenix, the Argentine navy stayed in port while the Argentine mainland had to worry about another Black Buck mission.

As a result of their catastrophic defeat in the Falklands campaign, the military junta of Argentina quickly collapsed.  Thus it can be argued that Britain helped liberate Argentina from a military dictatorship.  Which is something the current President of Argentina should reflect on as she rattles her rusty saber over the same islands for the same reasons as the junta.

Dana Loesch covered the Repub outreach to younger voters beautifully.  She filled in for Beck on TV yesterday and had three 20-something politicos talk about ways they could make inroads, and they were great.  No one in "leadership" is listening to them.  There's one mention of social media in Rinsed Preibus's autopsy report -- and that's to reach donors.

100 As they said. "They would have turned out in GREATER NUMBERS  . "

Don't try some journalistic feint to hide the fact that a more conservative Nominee would've garnered MORE votes.

Of course Romney got an increased amount. He was running against an avowed marxist muslim and they knew it.

So more decided to bite the bullet and vote EVEN THOUGH THEY KNEW ROMNEY WAS GOING TO SELL THEM OUT.

Because they also knew that Obama was going to do . . .  well, exactly what he HAS done.

And we won't identify the problem as long as the RINOS keep claiming we just have to change our messaging. It ain't the messaging friend, it's the fact that Republicans have lied and flipped and "evolved" and gained "strange new respect" once they get to DC and are under the control of the Establishment guys.

Well, not to worry. After getting them in in 2010 and they dithered around and helped them keep the House in 2012, they don't have any political capital to spend on SoCons.

It's gonna be:

SEE YA, WOULDN'T WANT TO BE YA in 2016 for the liberal Republican Party.

132 Gabe, I'm late to this party, but I disagree 100% with the suggestion that the problem is one of "messaging."

The perception of the Democrats among LIVs is that they fight, they are unified, and they win. And it's true. That is not perception -- that's reality. The message is secondary.

The perception of the Republicans among LIVs is that they are accommodationist and do not present a unified front, and certainly don't fight for what they believe in. And it's true.

Until they present themselves as winners, or losers fighting valiantly and together, they will always lose.

138 All the republicans need is a "real" conservative governor to run.  And it would help if that person could speak past the cameras to the people, have a sense of humor and be optimistic about the future of America.  And I say governor because we need a Washington outsider.  Washington is the problem, its full of bullshit and commies.

139 GOP might also take a clue from the fact that the base has twice now voted for the VP not the candidate himself Again, there is no evidence that this is true. Romney won the GOP nomination with a majority of primary votes. Not a plurality in a mixed field; he actually ended up with a majority of GOP primary voters, the most-fired-up, most committed group of GOP voters. That's the base and Romney won them. There's no reason to believe, having selected him in the primary, those voters abandoned him in the general.

>>>There was debate on teh blogs, but I think politicians heeded the political winds and voted for it.

IIRC, the threat in TARP was there would be tanks in the streets and they thought they had to do it to prevent that. When TFG got in office he sat with Stephanopoloser and was laughing about the economy - which, looking back, wasn't necessarily crazy-laughing or nic-fitting but could have been a realization that TARP didn't work and tanks are going on the streets anyhow.

Regardless, thats where I think we're headed still judging by purchases made across the board by governmental agencies.

My point though: It wasn't sold as political but as necessary to stave off total collapse.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at April 02, 2013 04:25 AM (4nopz)

160 The two obvious and major problems with the notion that evangelicals turned out in force in '12 are (1) it's based upon a small sample, high-MOE poll commissioned by evangelicals, (2) it's a collection of non-sequiturs. If millions stayed home and didn't vote in prior cycles and a slightly smaller number stayed home and didn't vote in '12, yeah, technically, their turnout was higher. But still there are tons of non-votes out there. And of course it goes without saying that you have to separate black evangelicals from white evangelicals, since the former in any event are going to vote in lock step for the Democrat. To say the GOP has a "messaging" problem is like saying a corpse has a breathing problem. Democrats control virtually the entire media, so of course the GOP will struggle to get its message out. Ultimately, though, the GOP has two colossal and perhaps intractable snafus with which to deal: (1) horrible demographics of its erstwhile primary voter "base", (2) lock step voting against it by racial minorities. To win the presidency a GOP nominee will need to get at least 60% of the overall white vote. Bare minimum. That's a tall order. There are a lot of ignoramuses out there. College students. Washed-up Hippies. Government clerical workers. Union drones. Then you have the irrational right. How many votes does the DrewM demographic cost the GOP each election cycle, either directly or indirectly, by turning off normal people? It's going to be a very tough row to hoe.

Gabe -

In saying the base voted for the VP I'm saying the base found the VP selection more compelling than the candidate in two cycles now. The VP is not part of the Primaries process, so to attempt to refute the claim as you have is an apples/oranges problem. Its anecdotal but there's no one lionizing McCain or thinking Romney is in any way vital to the GOP's future, yet there is a contigent saying that about both Palin and Ryan.

179 For messaging, it isn't about selling Republican policies better but countering the stereotyping being done by the Democrats. Who is going to vote for racist, homophobic, mysogynists, that want to kill old people and starve children just so their fat cat friends can make billions off poverty and suffering? Republicans joke about attacks like this but after 40 years of not fighting back against them, people believe the lies. What were the isues Obama ran on? Treament of women, gays, minorities, children, and old people. Obama attacked the GOP as being against each group but not just against them on some policy but that the GOP has some anciet inbred hatred for these groups and seeks only to abuse them. What did the Republicans run on? The economy, debt, spending, and foreign policy. There were two different campaigns taking place and the one Obama was running was nothing like the one Romney was running. To the extent Obama covered any of the issues Republicans thought were important, it was defensive and deflection. Easy to do with our media. But what attracted the voters to Obama? All of the racist and bigoted attacks against the GOP. If the Republicans can't counter the attack that they are hateful, racist, or bigoted toward X group, they will not be able to win elections. And don't think that if they cave on amnesty that the racist attacks will stop. The Democrats will just find some other line of attack to call them racist against central and south americans because it isn't about any one issue but using the racist attack itself that is the method for the Democrats.

There's a bit of a mean streak in a lot of Christians.

They'll warn you about the fire but if you keep sticking your hand in it, they'll finally let you and let the outcome be your punishment for ignoring them.

Christians love this country but they're not concerned enough to jeopardize their own salvation. Therefore they figure if it's God's will that the US gets taken down due to it's arrogant, baby murdering and deviancy embracing ways then SO BE IT.

Yeah, they know they'll be a part of the misery but they've absorbed revelations since they were 5, it's not gonna be a surprise.

They figure they'll eventually be resurrected and with Jesus no matter what happens on this earthly plane.

This is the key that so many on the Right seem to be totally unwilling to address - the befuddling unwillingness to punch back, brought to full flower under Bush and now Bohener, now leaves the way clear for every blow to land hard, fast, and hurtful. It's as if the GOP somehow belives "politics" to be a polite parlor game, perhaps carried out after a stirring round of whist, followed by a spirited discussion of marginal rates over gin and tonics...

while the Left sees politics as what it is: a part of life worth fighting for.

I hate to say this, but it may be God's will that the US is taken down. God has done it with arrogant nations that didn't worship God before. It was done with Judah and Israel. 207 111 NorK = Bloody Trouble. Revive Eisenhower Republican Party. US, don't count on China while placating the American public with messaging, "That was then, this is now. China wouldn't war v. US." Hearing the Pentagon announce that Trouble is not anticipated in Korea while the US completes war drills "is" propagandized reassurance. pfft However, Truman along with the UN forced our men into hell frozen over. The Korean War was not "just" anything but a fiasco that Eisenhower Republicans (NOT neo-conservative) campaigned and won to pull the US from continuing. And Ike kept his promise. Small man complex D-Truman was wrong to refuse advice from his military, and wrong to publicly end the career of Gen. MacArthur who warned that a ground war would be futile and bestial; better to clear via atom-bomb a no-man zone to maintain the Korean "peace". Instead, too many men were forced to slaughter each other before MacArthur's goal for a no-man's land was effected in the end. And by war v. diplomacy, the US confirmed to China that we no longer were grateful for the aid that the Chinese people gave our military during WWII. Razor's Edge, diplomacy v. aggression. MacArthur and Eisenhower knew well enough that no war should be fought without having a clear end goal. That was then. This is now with ever increasing never-ending US wars abroad while Constitutional Governance is no more at home. The clear end goal is what we witness happening already; chaos to keep the masses enslaved with nowhere to go -- resistance is futile. "I Like Ike" Reagan isn't the Republican Party's only solid American statesman for the latest generation to reinterpret. And given all of the US Military Installations abroad dating from WWII conclusion, it isn't as if Ike was an isolationist though he definitely cut down the size of our military after wars, and 'brought our troops home'. Nor was Ike a bloody global corporatist, as his final address and warning to America clarified our danger from Washingtonian profiteers forcing our citizenry to fund their industrial-congressional war machine which protects globalist interests vs. the US Constitution, rule of law, our national borders, and US citizenry.

210 We've got a dumbfuck electorate having had their brains leached out by the MFM and public daycare/indoctrination centers.  I think Reagan understood that and was able to use his good sense of humor to come up with lines that stayed with people.  With Carter it was the "there you go again" and with Mondale it was "I'm not going to use my opponent's youth against him"; both of which happened in debates and had to have been off the cuff remarks.  For all the comments of shitstains like Clark Clifford, Reagan was far from an "amiable dunce"; rather he was extremely sharp and understood the value of a well delivered jab.  Romney actually gave some reasonably good examples of the benefits of conservatism but, like everything Willard did, it was delivered in the most boring manner possible and probably sounded to the dumbfucks like Richie Rich giving excuses for not basing his success on being born with a silver spoon in his mouth.

For all the complaints about Palin, she's the only one who has consistently delivered jabs to the donks that have hit home.  I think that's why a lot of people like her because she does something that, either by plan or otherwise, the others just don't do.

214 I have said that for some time. Anyone who was claiming evangelicals were sitting out because of Romney Mormonism does not know any evangelicals, but instead is treating evangelicals as some fictitious group and saying "That sounds like something they would do." We are electing a President, not a pope. The "evangelical construct" is a tool that is used to paint evangelicals as unthinking, unreasonable voters who will not be appeased, so there is no point in trying.

We might as well get used to the DOPE blaming evangelicals for Romney's loss last year.  They've decided it was those bigoted     religious types who        refused to turn out for a    Mormon, and nothing will dissuade them from that bone.   They refuse to take a long,    hard look at    any of the other explanations, no matter how many times this is debunked.   They've adopted the ostrich defense.

Bullshit.  People have been pitching a version of that almost every day since the election (often in the morning's THC post), and evangelicals and others have constantly had to be on defense from it with the actual data.

The final data also says that Romney didn't lose women, although it was fairly close.  The real stay-homes, as I understand it, were the blue collar types.

I don't know that you can take the Republican primary results as a ringing endorsement of the base, Gabe.

For one, the primaries are spread out over the space of months.  Candidates were dropping out after the early primaries, so you didn't have a uniform field across the entire primary season.

Another, Mitt Romney won 52% of the overall primary vote (out of 19 million total votes cast).  I would call that grudging acceptance, not outright enthusiasm.  Plus, a fair portion of that vote was received after it became clear that neither Santorum nor Gingrich were going to be able to get enough delegates in the remaining primary states to be competitive.  So IMO the primary voters coalesced around Romney because no other candidate had the organization to be competitive and was sold as a guy who had the best chance to win the general, not because the primary voters were overly enthusiastic about the guy.

And yes, Vic mentioned some odd things, including where the VA Republicans only had Romney and Paul on the primary ballot.  That's skewing the vote results.  Let's not also forget the states which have open primaries, and by definition those wouldn't be representative of "the base."

When the Democrats would lose elections they would trot out the excuse that it's not their policies that are the issue, but the messaging.  I ridiculed it back then and I ridicule the excuse when it's offered now.  The reality is we've reached the tipping point where the FSA bloc can now impact elections.

Ditto for "moderate appeal."  The primaries are where the base comes out.  If they vote for the "moderate" then that's who they want.

As far as "organization" goes.  That's what it takes to run.  Period.  If you as a candidate cannot assemble a deep and capable organization, then you probably don't deserve to win.  Mitt demonstrated this by pissing endless gobs of money away on consultants for no return...as well as the debacle that was ORCA.

Still think there are some policy/platform issues that need work and that hurt Republicans. However, I agree with the overall point here.

We did not lose by that much this past November. If we had better turnout from our "base" Romney would have won. Understandably, Republicans are frustrated with their candidates and with the party. I'm sure many Democrats share this frustration with their candidates as well. However, I think the core Democrat voters (we know who they are) do not stay home to send a message that they demand a more ideologically pure candidate or one more aligned with their particular hot button issue.

266 if they do not change the primary system this time they can kiss my ass. When you say "they"... you know that the state legislatures set the primary system for each state. And the state party chairs vote, when the RNC gets together, on the system they want. Iowa will have its caucus whether the RNC wants it or not. Florida will jump to the front of the line whether the RNC wants it or not. Now, the RNC has tried to stop that and limit the influence of the state parties to do this. But that runs into some problems. First, people scream their little heads off about the "Beltway Establishment" RNC trying to override the state parties. Second, even when the RNC does issue sanctions, they haven't made a difference to the outcome yet. For example, this last time, Florida got docked half it's convention delegates. The difference wouldn't have changed the outcome; Romney would have been a lock by that point whether the sanction had been in place or not or even if the sanction had been to ban all of Florida's delegates. So, I know you're mad and "they" can kiss your ass. But the people you're mad at...

274 I've been making this point about the alleged 2012 Turnout problem for a while now. There was no drop in turnout, certainly not anything remotely significant. I looked at states like Virginia and Florida, and in BOTH states Romney improved on the vote totals Bush got in 2004. The only turnout problem the GOP has or had, is that too many moochers turned out for Obama. Oh, and women, and gays, and people with sympathy for women and gays, what with the manufactured Romney war against abortion and gay rights. Thanks mainstream media!

275 >"The field was weak, that is true"<

Bullshit.

People largely got the candidates they wanted.

People who were interested, voted in the primaries.

People ended up with a Party candidate a majority voted for.

We call that a democratic process.

The choices were, what they were. People knew what the alternative was. They knew every vote in the General would make a difference.

Yet some stayed home and pouted.

Others are still talking about how weak the field was.

Suck it up and drive on. Maybe next time, get off your ass and get involved or vote.

I am a little sick of the mamby pamby baby complaints and excuses.

Posted by: Marcus at April 02, 2013 05:09 AM (xZ56R)

282 132 The perception of the Republicans among LIVs is that they are accommodationist and do not present a unified front, and certainly don't fight for what they believe in. And it's true. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What?!!?! By definition, "low information voters" have never even entertained a thought about Republicans being "accomodating". The media storyline on the GOP is that they are too inflexible, as reflected in a poll just yesterday. Low information voters don't even know what the GOP stands for, all they know is what the media TELLS them the GOP stands for. Unless and until conservatives find a way to combat the liberal bias of the mainstream media, the "information war" is all but over.

Let's look at the actual state by state primary returns.

Up until April 2012, the only states in which Romney won a majority were Massachusetts (a state no GOP candidate would have a prayer of carrying in the general) and Virginia (where it was only Romney and Paul on the ballot).  The other states he won:

New Hampshire, 39%

Florida, 47%

Arizona, 47%

Michigan, 41%

Ohio, 38% (with Santorum at 37%...)

Vermont, 40%

Illinois, 47%

So Romney was winning pluralities but not majorities.  However, thanks to GOP delegate rules, he was winning the lions share of delegates to that point.  Come April, the writing was on the wall.  Plus, by that time there were very big states (New York, California, Texas) who voted in majorities for Romney...but mainly because at that time Romney was mainly running against Ron Paul.

So looking at a 52% primary vote total is misleading.  It is as someone else said...the opposition was fractured between two different candidates and neither could really get that faction unified.

Posted by: @JohnTant at April 02, 2013 05:10 AM (tVWQB)

285 We can shorten the primary season, but we'll probably never shorten the campaign season. There will always be a perceived advantage in getting an early start. The primaries in Feb and March would be good. Every week for 8 weeks, a group of states vote.

Posted by: Lincolntf at April 02, 2013 09:03 AM (ZshNr)

The longer the campaign season the more money it takes to run one.  Romney had an extremely well financed organization that gave him a clear advantage over everybody.  Also Romney, for all his flaws, was and is an excellent executive so he had more experience at running things other than his mouth which gave him an advantage over Noot for example.  I'm not saying that Gingrich would have made a very good President; just using him as an example of how the long campaigns keep potentially good candidates out and increase the influence of people like Rove who are good at separating the swells from their money and backing candidates with it.

I also think that the GOP has a much better bench of candidates for 2016 than 2012, which was a perfect storm of shit where nobody good came to mind.

Did Romney throw the election?

His own son says he didn't act like he wanted to win.

He threw away chances and was surprised when he did do something that worked.

He hired incompetents and didn't supervise them.

His GOTV effort could've been the final straw.

His well touted management skill was not so evident except in the primaries as he zealously knocked down all the other contenders.

Where did some the dirt thrown come from? or Who?

You have a responsibility to vote. But that includes being informed.

You don't vote for a commercial or some shit you heard from your neighbor.

You don't jump off the cliff with other lemmings then say you "didn't know" there was a cliff there.

Take a half hour away from the boob tube or stop surfing the net and read on the issues.

Voting takes some effort. If you can't spend the time it takes to get yourself informed, don't bother.

I've met a lot of seniors in NY who told me they always voted Democrat. That's why they voted for Obama. They though all the "facts" about healthcare were the same old politics.

Now they are devastated by what's going on with their healthcare. Their budgets are getting blown out of the water and they are struggling to live.

305 Gabe, You know that saying, there lies, damn lies, and then statistics. The problem I have is there's a poll to show everything. You say evangelicals showed in greater numbers. What about that gallup poll shortly before the election where 18 percent (supposedly representative of the country) said they would never vote for a Mormon? I know a few of these evangelicals personally. And wasn't Joseph Farah a famous one? He's a rabid anti-Mormon and has been known to make similar comments regarding Romney. What we know for sure is 3 million fewer people voted for the GOP ticket this time right? So if it wasn't the evangelicals that didn't vote, who was it? Not saying Romney lost because he's Mormon, but I think it played a significant part. I also personally think this impact was most significant among evangelical seniors... which are in greater numbers in places like FL.

Gabe my history's a bit rusty on this, but IIRC, they always fold on the "docking the delegates" thing.

They start out with "you won't be seated" and then they wait a while and when its clear it doesn't matter much (due to other primaries) they say "we'll go ahead and seat you now."

So they aren't exactly sticking to principles.

What we do have is solid evidence that Iowa skews the primary system. Candidates have repeatedly made out of Iowa and never make it to even the middle of the primary season.  This elongates the primary season.

Iowa (thanks to a lot of things, including corn subsidies) is not representative of the US.

And that doesn't even begin to take into account things like the Chaos that happened in MO where our Governor veto the bill that would have moved our primary forcing the state party to choose between either a) ignoring the outcome or b) being docked delegates for something that wasn't even our fault. (State law dictates when the primaries are held, here, unless they're moved by more state law.)

So what we've got is at best an inconsistent system that needs to be overhauled and the RNC shows no real impetus to do that, so we keep going with the same (quite obviously) broken system.

IMHO at the very least we should be moving towards a more regional system, with batches of primaries (not caucuses, primaries.)  The RNC should have the power to make that happen but it will require muscle (and pissing people off).

307 I read a debunking of the story about The Conqueror a while back. It was written by John Stossel or somebody else with very good credentials. It turned out that the soil actually had very little background radiation. There was nowhere near enough to cause so many cases of cancer. But there was one thing common to the actors in the movie who later died from cancer. They all smoked. And almost all of them were heavy smokers. John Wayne was smoking three packs a day during shooting. The article I read made a very persuasive argument that is was smoking, not nuclear tests, that plagued the cast and crew of The Conqueror.

WHAT actual data?

Gathered by WHOM?

Reported and promulgated by, again, WHOM?

They're guessing just as much as anyone else is.

Because exit polls and after election polls and any other tabulations of what voters with what party affiliation voted and what the supposed composition of the voting precinct is claimed to be are all based on at least one lie.

That lie is that people will always tell the truth to a an anonymous pollster. The other lie is that the pollster won't/didn't influence the pollee.

How many answers that are tabulated and spread about as gospel are actual bullshit handed out by a voter who doesn't want to be bothered and doesn't want to give some unknown party answers to questions that are none of their business.

But too many people are too polite or just like to fuck with pollsters and so they LIE and say whatever they think the pollster or the organization they claim they work for wants to hear.

Hey kids, it's the thread killer here, with a coupla points before everyone leaves for the new post.  First, in my own personal experience not backed by science, the people most likely to be at fault for any fuckup are the ones spinning like a centrifuge to sling blame and mud elsewhere.  So look who is doing the most finger pointing and cock punch them first.

Secondly, the media problem, which will not be gone in 14 or 16 or as far out as I can imagine we still have a viable economy.  We (defined as not moonbat liberal) will not get fair coverage of issues or candidates as long as the media status quo remains.  That's just a fact.  And while what Akin and that goof from Indiana said were actuall egregious, what will be mocked and ridiculed will change for election to election, but the strategy will remain the same...  take your opponents stupidest statements, and make them the de facto policies of the entire party, and make the entire party either stand or fall on those stupied statements.  Granted, this only works in one direction, as the major media is so overwhelmingly liberal, but the point is not to only point fingers at the likes of Akin et al, but to find a way around the strategy of painting all conservatives with the words that show us in the worst possible light.  Maquaqua, anyone?

346 187 Start telling them the truth. Don't be jerks about it (that means muzzling the ones who have mommy/wife issues), and tell them the truth. Abortion and free contraceptives -- what will that get them? What has it gotten them? They get treated like a piece of meat by men who are worthless, pumped full of STDs, left single moms (or women made sterile by cheap abortions), bitter, alone, full of regret. You could even get some minorities over with the abortion line -- what is it but a eugenics program? Workforce equality? What has that really gotten women? or minorities? They are still in the same jobs they were before -- just with delusions having having more just out of reach, more and more people getting sick and tired of their complaining? All they have become are vote cattle and the lowest rung on the consumer society food chain -- they've been played for fools; this would work on the "citizens of Fishtown" that everyone likes to talk about here. But this means that there will have to be a side that wants to get everyone out of this mess -- give them some reason to hope that they will be treated fairly and their problems will be worked on honestly -- no pseudo-hippie dippy bs which Republicans are far too happy to engage in. Republicans are far too happy to go along with the beautiful people status quo themselves -- evidence: Mitt Romney (come on, he was not what you told yourselves he was, and he lost -- which if you'd told the truth to yourselves, you knew it would happen). Tell then the truth; more importantly tell the truth to yourselves, and if nobody wants to hear it, then yours is a lost cause anyway -- we all go down together. Everyone will find out the hard way.

You are so stupid, you don't even realise when you've made a self-stultifying statement.  Since everybody already knows that blacks are a minority and can't elect a President on their own, it's obvious that when people refer to the FSA, they don't mean "blacks."  They really mean "people who want FS."

360 The fact is that abortion is a non-issue for 98% of voters-- other than the hysteria of OMG-COAT HANGERS!!!, but 98% of voters will never want or need one. It's a sham issue, one that's just part of the 'correct-thinking' portfolio. Like gay marriage. If .3% of Canadian marriages are Adam and Steve, it's not an electoral issue of significance, unless, again, it's a sham issue designed to conform the herd. As opposed to, say, doubling the national debt and the unemployment rate not budging down an inch during the Democrats hopey-changey administration. Which affects everyone, and they get a pass on it because of the media-hyped portfolio issues.

Not saying Romney lost because he's Mormon, but I think it played a significant part. NO. No, no, no, and this is a huge problem. The numbers aren't difficult, they're public, and they're absolutely not what you think they are. One million more people voted for Romney than voted for McCain. Three and a half million fewer people voted for Obama 2012 than for Obama 2008. I don't know where you're getting your "3 milion fewer people" number, but it's completely wrong. As I said before, if we cannot properly identify the problem we cannot solve the problem. Believing in the myth of low evangelical turnout is a failure to identify the problem. 393 >The US is not synonymous with the Kingdom of God. >>212. Agreed. The kingdom of god is within each person, recognized or not. Our purpose is to augment that light within of love on earth, shared not stifled. The LORD told his "chosen" Hebrews to abide as a confederation of related tribes WITHOUT a king. But they wouldn't take their LORD's advice, sending Samuel back to get the "right" answer from the LORD, the popular answer. So the LORD's Hebrew prophet Samuel sought a man who would be king, and found Saul who was annointed. And the rest is still repetitive history. For disobedience, The LORD Jehovah often cursed those he "chose" to bless and call his own. The old testament is filled with the plight of being chosen to obey and being cursed for disobedience. According to his prophets, on many occasions the LORD also commanded the destruction of his "chosen" people and nation (plural Judah/Israel), actually blessing the "enemies" to prevail. And there are the stories of repentance and the LORD forgiving, including Nineveh, see Jonah 3:10. Perhaps Isaiah 19:23-25 prophecies events of our time: In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrians will come into Egypt and the Egyptians into Assyria, and the Egyptians will worship with the Assyrians. In that day Israel will be the third party with Egypt and Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth, whom the LORD of hosts has blessed, saying, “Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance.” As for recognizing the "Kingdom of God", after showing people to experience and appreciate the holy spirit within their hearts, lamenting that Jerusalem doomed itself to stone its prophets (Matt23:37), in response to the query whether Jesus were King of the Jews, Jesus said, "My kingdom is not of this earth." Regarding being "chosen", after Jesus arose from the dead, he sent his apostles to share the Love of 'God With Us' for all people regardless of region or ethnicity, having taught through life "the chosen". "Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds." And remember, Jesus' apostles, disciples and missionaries traveled the world, converting congregations through Jesus' Love in vast regions of Europe, Asia Minor, the entire Arabian Peninsula, North Africa and those in India -- without the "aid" of Constantine and the Roman Empire maintained via military conquest. Jesus taught us to pray to our "Father in Heaven" (infinity) with thanks and to ask forgiveness conditional on our own infinite acts of forgiveness for our enemies. Subsequent to evangelizing Christ, the Emperor Constantine gave precedence for another militant usurper to force "conversion", Muhammad with his Qur'an and warlords, to compete for territorial conquest using the sword and religious propaganda to terrorize and "own" the souls of men. Such a shame, the loss of love and loss of faith in forgiveness. Muslims gained converts through descendents of former Christian populations, and of former Hindi, Buddhists and Zoroastrians. Vanity, vanity. All is vanity. Such a shame. In Mesopotamia there have been highly civilized religions of peace that cultivated the Golden Rule and tolerance for religious freedom. The Persian Darius the Great and Zoroastrianism promoted respect for life and religious tolerance within his empire. The Buddhists of Asia Minor taught respect for life. Regarding "My kingdom is not of this earth," from the Eastern Orthodox roots of Christianity, the Egyptian Coptic dogma for example observes strict respect for the separation between church and state, perhaps as necessity dictated being dhimmi. And recently there were yet peaceful Muslims in Egypt attempting to protect these Christian neighbors from being brutalized by the Muslim Brotherhood that now dictates governance. And what does it profit a person or a people to gain the whole world but lose one's own soul? As if one person can either buy or steal another's soul after losing his own to get ahead. Vanity.

395 Yeah, so I'm searching this topic now and every result I see says 60 million voted for McCain vs. 57 million for Romney... ?? Is there some source somewhere with updated numbers? According to what you're saying 61 million voted for Romney vs 60 for McCain, I see no reference for this.

Posted by: Andrew at April 02, 2013 06:45 AM (HS3dy)

396 Ah. Rush was wrong, probably because he said that before the vote count was complete. And not just his total numbers. His claim that the white vote stayed home was also wrong. Man, I wonder how much or difficulty getting people to learn from Election 2012 is due to false early information like this? I mean, people still think election fraud would have altered the outcome because of that one debunked story.

<i>Who's kicking socons to the curb? The party is as pro-life as ever. Almost all GOP politicians are as pro-traditional marriage as ever, including the RNC chairman. That Priebus said that he didn't believe Sen. Portman should be drummed out of the party is taken to mean he wants to "kick social conservatives to the curb" is pathetic hysteria.

Tiresome victimology is tiresome.</i>

No, tiresome establishment apologetics is tiresome. The "post-mortem" skips merrily away from any discussion of pro-life issues, and you know it. Despite running a candidate who ran a simon-pure economics issues campaign, got his Veep selection to modify his own pro-life beliefs to trim to his, and even ran pro-Roe ads in PA, the post-mortem seems to think "even less so" is the trick. Oh, I'm sorry--it's "changing our tone" on abortion. Yeah, "pro-life as ever."

We don't have these soul-searching sessions after someone like Carly Fiorina gets creamed. And the notion that an eminence grise like Rob Portman is going to get run from the party is nigh unto hilarious.

402 2008 - Eligible voters: 213,313,508 2012 - Eligible voters: 221,925,820 2008 - Total votes: 132,653,958 2012 - Total votes: 130,306,739 That's not just 3 million people. That would be about 3 million if there were no difference in population.... however, people come of age and vote. In this case about 7 million new new people, with 3 million fewer votes cast. That's 10 million. The average is around 60%, so we are actually missing about 5-6 millions votes between 2008 and 2012. Find us new candidates.

403 Huckabee is a grifter.  Look at his PAC.  And he isn't the only one in the party who's PAC spends less than 10 percent on elections.

Posted by: Shoot Me at April 02, 2013 07:22 AM (qiXMt)

404 darelf, your numbers are deeply misleading. Total votes in 2008 for Obama and McCain: 129.3 million. Total votes in 2012 for Obama and Romney: 126.8 million. So there were 2.5 million fewer voters in total for the Republican and Democratic candidates in 2012. As I noted early, Obama got 3.5 million fewer votes in 2012 than he got in 2008. Romney got one million more votes in 2012 than McCain got in 2008. Thus, the lost votes --the 2.5 million who voted in 2008, but didn't in 2012 for either of the major party candidates -- overwhelmingly came out of the Democratic side of the ledger. The Democrats are the ones that need to talk about failing to turnout the vote. They seriously underperformed compared to 2008, while the GOP overperformed.

405 People didn't vote for Romney because he was a weasel who talked out of both sides of his mouth -- which both had one of his feet stuck in. That was it, right there. And some of the things that went on in the primaries helped to reinforce that image when it came time for the general. That's all on him and his crew; that's all on people who believed that after some of this happened that he could still win and are now trying to blame other people for what he and his group did. No more making excuses for it, nor more blaming the voters for it (what did you expect them to do? they went with the devil they knew rather than taking a chance on the one they didn't -- and Romney did not help with that, because he refused to stop speaking out of both sides of his mouth and couldn't quit sticking his big feet in there; on top of it all, everyone coasted on this sense of his "inevitability" -- they refused to tell themselves the truth). GOP picked a real lemon; get over it, don't make the same mistakes again.

This is just another continuation of Huckabee's ongoing quest to become the face and voice of evangelical conservativism. His defense of Akin during the 2012 campaign  was indefensible from a national campaign strategic standpoint, but made perfect sense from Huckabee's perspective. By defending the idiotic Akin and encouraging him to resist GOP party pressure to get him to drop out, Huckabee essentially prevented giving another, non-idiotic Republican candidate a shot at defeating McCaskill. In short, Huckabee's building a power base and has demonstrably proven that nothing is more important to Mike Huckabee than Mike Huckabee. He's an asshole.

407 Socons are not the only ones who eschew abortion. However, they are the Republicans who would make abortion illegal, rather than simply outlawing any public tax funding of abortion, prohibiting tax funds from any clinic or organization that provides abortion, no matter where or when. They are also the Republicans who would assign the Puritanical scarlet letter to those who don't measure up to perfection. And finally, refusing a clause to permit legal abortion in cases of legally reported rape (whether a case is solved or not) or when a mother's life is threatened is hardcore fundamentalism. That line of thought would limit sexual intercourse strictly for the purpose of conception. There are many Independents and moderates in every public sector that eschew abortion, and demand that tax funds not be directed to enable abortion. As if politicians are compassionate, or are not corrupt. The private sector comprises privately funded special interest groups and organizations (Planned Parenthood) from which abortions will always be made available, legally or not. They don't NEED tax funds in order to remain in effect. Pregnant females don't need tax funded abortions.

408 360 Maybe...but the malady that lurks behind abortion is still a problem, and it's time it got addressed. What did greater access to abortion and contraceptives really do for women? Oh, they can have more sex -- which means they can have more abortions (and possibly take some penicillin shots) when they find out Mr. Wonderful really didn't love them after all; he just wanted something something. Doesn't that make you feel all special women? Doesn't that make you feel great? Why aren't you celebrating babycakes? You are free! Men by and large hate everything about you except when they get to hit it and quit it, because you're more bitter and clinging than ever now; you aren't going to have an easy time finding anybody who wants to sign up for lifelong commitment with you (or any kids you just might keep), but hey, "freedom! you can have it all baby!"...and here it is, take a good look at it. Especially minority women -- and they get to go to the Dr. Gosnell's of this world, so that should be pointed out too, and the fact that they signed up to be treated like this. Tell them the truth -- it didn't get them anything but heartache, and in the end its on them because they went along with it -- but always, there's the opportunity to change. Come at them with that concerning abortion and free contraceptives, and you're getting one step closer to fixing some problems (including monetary ones, some fiscal ones that seem to be a big f'n deal to Republicans)...but...you have to want to change it, and therein lies the rub. Everybody's got a choice.

410 Infighting of "conservative" factions... A page from Vienna, neoclassical vs. liberal romantic revolution warring between word and wordless messaging to capture the masses... 19th Century aesthetic "War of the Romantics" -- through repetitive old guard theme and variation, neoconservative truncation and censorship of a never ending melody meant to squash evolution and worship only one "true" heir to Beethoven (THE revolutionary though highjacked and civilized after death by purist dogma). Regardless of which Beethoven tradition, in subsequent generations, the Nazi's listened as much to Brahms as to Wagner, btw.

Romney was the best candidate among the choices presented. I had high hopes for Rick Perry, Romney's most formidable opponent of the lot of them, but Perry never should've attempted a grueling national campaign while recovering from (evidently fairly serious) back surgery. Running under such conditions was a bad call on Perry's part, and speaks to lack of good judgement--which (again) may've been compromised by his medical condition. So Romney won the nomination.

If what Romney's son said is true, that his father didn't really want the job, then that's the reason for Romney's less-than-stellar performance (in a lifetime of stellar performances). Lincoln called presidential ambitions 'the worm in the belly' that gnawed and nibbled away at him and gave him no rest, implying that he (Lincoln) wanted the job badly, more than anything. If you don't want it, you don't get it.

416 I'm not trying to say anything, but here's the numbers: 2004 - 62 million votes for Bush 203 million eligible voters ( 60% turnout - 122 million votes cast ) 2012 - 61 million votes for Romney 222 million eligible voters ( 58% turnout - 129 million votes cast ) So... out of 19 million new voters, assuming 58% of them would vote, and 45% of the new votes would go to Romney (his 2012 share) he should have had a total number of about 70 million votes. He didn't. If only half of those "should haves" had been "conservative" and not crossover, he's missing about 4-5 million votes. Do I think around 4 or 5 million conservative voters who voted for Bush in 2004 stayed home and didn't vote in 2012? I think that is highly likely. In fact, I think it is extremely likely.

Posted by: darelf at April 02, 2013 11:37 AM (Z1WKS)

417 413 Well, if he didn't want the job, then why did he waste everybody's time (and a lot of people's money)? That makes him "the best possible candidate" how? Perry came out acting like a goof...but at least I suspect the dude wanted to actually win the thing (same as with the rest). And that they likely wouldn't have had their kid go to the media afterwards and say "well, he didn't really want to win anyway". That was just kicking people who voted for him in the teeth imhao.

Posted by: citizen of the LoL at April 02, 2013 12:57 PM (DBkD3)

418 So... out of 19 million new voters, assuming 58% of them would vote, and 45% of the new votes would go to Romney (his 2012 share) he should have had a total number of about 70 million votes. He didn't.

Do I think around 4 or 5 million conservative voters who voted for Bush in 2004 stayed home and didn't vote in 2012? I think that is highly likely. In fact, I think it is extremely likely.

You're assuming that there are 4 or 5 million new conservative voters out there, something that doesn't appear in the voter registration numbers. Also, your claim that these voters could have voted for Bush in 2004, but didn't vote in 2012 is unsupported. You want to believe these voters are out there, but they don't show up in the voter totals, the voter registration numbers, or public polling.

Again, the data does not support the claims that are being made.

Posted by: Gabriel Malor at April 02, 2013 01:36 PM (jZUEZ)

419 "You're assuming that there are 4 or 5 million new conservative voters out there, something that doesn't appear in the voter registration numbers." "Again, the data does not support the claims that are being made." I'm not claiming what did happen. But I know what didn't happen. I know that 19 million newly eligible voters weren't 100% liberal. I know that since there were fewer total real number votes for Romney than for Bush, that there were at least some number of previously registered conservative voters who said "screw it". And I know that if you're a newly eligible voter with conservative leanings and don't see anyone worth voting for, you probably won't even bother to register. This isn't even about percentages, we are talking about the actual real number of votes being less. Not share, not turnout percentages, actual real 1 million less votes when the pool of available voters is up by 19 million. My conclusion is that millions of people who would have voted for someone like Bush, decided not to vote at all ( and in some cases to not even register to vote ). Is it 1, or 3 or 4 or 5 million? I don't know, but I would guess one of those numbers, and as a complete shot in the dark I would guess closer to 5 than to 1. That says nothing about evangelical or whatever other category. Blame whoever you want, but the fact is that millions of people who would have otherwise voted, decided Romney wasn't good enough to show up for.
