Happy Thursday.

Lawmakers from both parties are in talks to exempt themselves and their staffs from having to join Obamacare health exchanges. Being forced to use the Obamacare exchanges would lead to a "brain drain" on Capitol Hill, these lawmakers say, because they're too expensive. I believe the first part of any rational response to this proposal has to begin: "Fuck you, you fucking fucks."

Officials say Dzhokhar Tsarnaev confessed before he was informed of his rights. Whether or not those statements are admissible at trial is going to depend on several other factors. Also, the statements would be admissible if Tsarnaev repeated them or expanded upon them after he was Mirandized. No one's really worried about getting a conviction in this case.

Animal rights "activists," accurately referred to as terrorists, ransacked a lab in Italy and set back research for treating autism and other disorders by years. I believe the first part of any rational response to this act has to begin: "Fuck you, you fucking fucks."

Ron and Rand Paul are reportedly pressuring Rep. Justin Amash not to run for the Senate. Apparently, they see a bright future for him in the House. In semi-related news, the Democratic AG of Kentucky, Jack Conway, who lost to Sen. Paul, says he won't run against Sen. McConnell, blames Puffy McPuffyface for the Democrats' trouble finding a candidate to run.

Rhode Island will become the 10th state to legalize gay marriage. Yesterday, the state senate passed such a law, with all of the state's GOP senators voting in favor of it. The law goes back to the House for technical corrections (the House already passed it last month) and then on to the Gov. Lincoln Chafee's desk. If you want to know how the law came about in spite of opposition from the president, majority leader and Judiciary Committee chairman of the state senate -- all of whom could have stopped the bill from proceeding to a vote -- Josh Barro explains.

They just opened a hundred-year time capsule in Oklahoma. Here's photos of what was inside.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Thursday, April 25, 2013.  On this day in 1901 NY became the first State to require license plates on cars.  Along with the plate came a tax.  In 1901 it was 1 dollar.  So here we go I didnÂ’t make my 50 posts yesterday so IÂ’ll have to make up for it today.

Morning, Horde.

I had a few too many Old Fashioneds last night, so no story today, just a link.

If youÂ’ve dabbled in Hollywood history to any extent, youÂ’ve most likely come across a picture of Sophia Loren and Jayne Mansfield during a 1957 party at the restaurant of “Prince” Mike Romanoff.*  Mansfield, in a very low-cut dress, is smiling, while Loren gives her a sidelong glare, a mixture of shock and embarrassment.

HereÂ’s a link to more photos from that infamous night, including a bodacious shot of the marvelous Miss MansfieldÂ’s mountainous mammae:

Hope you all have a wonderful and hangover-free day.

*Romanoff insisted he was a member of the Russian ruling dynasty, and most of Hollywood cheerfully went along with the pretense.

54 232 Maybe Spencer Ackerman is concussed, or virally concussed. I posted this in the HL thread. I blame Spencer Ackerman for the Boston Bombings. We wonder why the FBI did not follow up on the Russian info. Ackerman has an article in Wired in September, 2011, that explains why. http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/09/fbi-islam-domination/all/ He crows that he has driven the FBI to leave Muslims alone. It is somewhat more roundabout, but he takes credit for forcing the FBI to remove anti-Muslim material from all of their training through pressure from his column, and he claims that the anti-Muslim material made the the FBI give greater scrutiny to Muslim organizations and businesses. I am sure that if the FBI got its hand slapped for scrutinizing Muslims, it probably decided to back off. It's Spencer Ackerman's fault. People should be asking him if he is still proud of making the FBI afraid to investigate Islamic radicals. They should tweet him that he is blame, and when will he apologize to the children of Boston. Oh yeah, Spencer Ackerman? Put a right winger through a plate glass window. That Spencer Ackerman.

Funny, now "reporters" are using that phrase to apologize for Obama. Now that Obama is around 30% at being right, you don't need to be 100% right anymore. Now being 100% right is impossible. 67 - "Lawmakers from both parties are in talks to exempt themselves and their staffs from having to join Obamacare health exchanges." Obviously. The Democrat Party is the leftism party. The left-wing mantra is leftism for thee, but not for me. For the simple reason that leftists are not dumb enough to want their own policies to apply to them. They're crazy; not stupid. On the GOP side it only makes sense for them to want to exempt themselves and their staff from as much of Obamacare as they can manage. It's tough enough being a Republican in Congress. Every day you have to deal with a hostile media. With derangement in the chattering classes. With your own erstwhile primary voter "base," of which materials percentages are deranged. The last thing you need is a bad healthcare plan. P.S. -- This might be before your time, but back in 2009, when Obamacare was enacted, 100% of the Democrat Senators who voted and 87% of the Democrat representatives who voted cast their lots in favor of that bill. I guess so as long as congress lets then get away with it. http://is.gd/c2MEax Posted by: Vic at April 25, 2013 06:55 AM (53z96) They finally admit that they are dictators. They finally admit they ignore the law when it suits there needs/agenda. This is a stunning statement -- right out there for us all to see. Yet, half the country does not get it! “There are tensions with union leadership, unfortunately, but here’s what I expect as a former federal prosecutor and attorney general, and that is that law enforcement agents will enforce the law in accord with the guidance they’re given from their superiors,” Napolitano said. “That’s what we ask of ICE, that’s what we ask of Border Patrol, that’s what we ask throughout the Department and I believe that would be consistent with all law enforcement. Agents don’t set the enforcement priorities. Those are set by their superiors and they are asked then to obey that guidance in accord with the law.”

What sequester? http://is.gd/idp8K6 Posted by: Vic at April 25, 2013 06:56 AM (53z96) Aren't banks supposed to automatically close accounts with zero balances? This sounds like 1) payoffs; 2) money laundering. It is one of the oddest spending habits in Washington: This year, the government will spend at least $890,000 on service fees for bank accounts that are empty. At last count, Uncle Sam has 13,712 such accounts with a balance of zero. They are supposed to be closed. But nobody has done the paperwork yet.

Where did the bomb-making skills come from?
Did he have any accomplices (other than his "speed bump" of a brother)?
Who did they discuss the plot with?
Who are his friends and acquaintances?
What did his brother do on his visit to Russia?
Who did he see there?
What other mayhem did he and his brother plan?
How did they plan to accomplish that?

And so on, and so on...

They could explain that this gives everything the Dems want. These "poor hard working" people will now be able to stay in this country, work, not be split from their families. It's a win win. They get their green cards, they pay taxes, they can get benefits etc.. Only thing they can't do is vote. Just like my mother who came from England when she was 19, she is a legal alien with a green card and has worked and paid taxes her whole life, but has never been able to vote, and she's okay with that. Since the subject of Liberace has come up, there's a good biography of him by Darden Pyron, Liberace:  An American Boy.  I read it a number of years ago, so I don't remember all the details, but it struck me as being balanced and sympathetic.

And if I don't get too hammered over the weekend, on Monday I'll tell you about Liberace's film debut, Sincerely Yours.

196 And, just WTH sent the DOJ into that room to Mirandize that little fuck? DOJ didn't Mirandize him. The magistrate did. From AP: "The surviving suspect in the Boston Marathon bombings acknowledged to the FBI his role in the attacks but did so before he was advised of his constitutional right to keep quiet and seek a lawyer, U.S. officials said Wednesday. "Once Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was read his rights on Monday, he immediately stopped talking, according to four officials of both political parties who were briefed on the interrogation but insisted on anonymity because the briefing was private. "After roughly 16 hours of questioning, investigators were surprised when a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney's office entered the hospital room and read Tsarnaev his rights, the four officials and one law enforcement official said. Investigators had planned to keep questioning him."

So wife's still sorting out the foot problems from her genius move of sliding across the hardwood floors (and ending up with a splinter buried in her foot.)

Current thought is it's infected. (after the doc tried to remove the splinter with a scalpel.

I know a lot about the medical profession.  Knowing about it is kinda what I do.  But I learned a few things during this.

1) It is getting worse.  The wife goes to the same practice I do. It's always been a big busy practice, a few years back they got bought out by a giant physicians group, nothing much changed.  Then they got bought out by Mercy Hospital.  And now things are getting worse.

At my annual Catholic Hospitals conference (Which still has netted me 0 job offers so I may stop going) I confirmed that Mercy is buying up anything remotely related to primary care hoping to form an ACO (oh joy!) even though (by the admission of several talks at the conference) no one really knows what an ACO looks like, how to build one, or what it should do.

BUT what Mercy does know how to do is totally fuck over a working physician's office.  How do you do that?  Well first you take the 8 person practice  (which sees hundreds of patients per day) and remove it's scheduling to a central call center.  Why? Who knows.

Then you take that call center and make it as FUCKING STUPID as humanly possible, so they can't do urgent appointments and instead force you off the line and delete the records of your call (this happened.)

Then you make support staff "interchangeable" so that some of the physicians aides are from different offices and don't know where shit is. (which is how we ended up with the scalpel I guess rather than a standard set of splinter tweezers).

The list goes on and on.

Meanwhile, we should have just spent the $100 fucking dollars and gone to the ER. It would have been much faster and this point probably cheaper.  And maybe the person there would have been competent.

The theory of a working health system is that primary care docs are the "first line of response" that theory has usually held well for me.  It's completely fallen apart here.

I'm beginning to think that harassment of political staffs is going to be necessary.  Shun anyone who works for Congress, down to the lowliest intern.  Got a nephew who's working as a summer intern?  Cut him off from your family unless he quits.  Got a neighbor who works as a secretary?  Ban your kids from playing with hers.  Make it so unpleasant that they quit and that no one else dares to take the job.

You don't have to read between the lines, it's in the article. "investigators were surprised when a magistrate judge and a representative from the U.S. Attorney's office entered the hospital room..."

Because I'm totally sure a magistrate judge was just itching to get involved in this case.

(And don't give me the bullshit of "well they had to arraign him."  Dude isn't getting up and walking out the hospital.  They could have charged him at any time.)

Frankly I don't think Miranda matters much, it sounds like they aren't too concerned about his confession from a prosecutorial standpoint as much as they wanted information for intel purposes.

308 If I had keys to the caddy I would make a post:

A Marine's view of what is really going on
Message from a Recon Marine in Afghanistan:

From the Sand Pit...

It's freezing here. I'm sitting on hard cold dirt between rocks and
Shrubs at the base of the Hindu Kush Mountains, along the Dar'yoi Pomir River,
Watching a hole that leads to a tunnel that leads to a cave. Stake out,
My friend, and no pizza delivery for thousands of miles.

I also glance at the area around my ass every ten to fifteen seconds to
Avoid another scorpion sting. I've actually given up battling the
Chiggers and sand fleas, but the scorpions give a jolt like a cattle prod. Hurts

Like a bastard. The antidote tastes like transmission fluid, but God
Bless the Marine Corps for the five vials of it in my pack.

The one truth the Taliban cannot escape is that, believe it or not, they
Are human beings, which means they have to eat food and drink water. That
Requires couriers and that's where an old bounty hunter like me comes in
Handy. I track the couriers, locate the tunnel entrances and storage
Facilities, type the info into the handheld, shoot the coordinates up to the
Satellite link that tells the air commanders where to drop the hardware. We
Bash some heads for a while, then I track and record the new movement.

It's all about intelligence. We haven't even brought in the snipers yet.
These scurrying rats have no idea what they're in for. We are but days
Away from cutting off supply lines and allowing the eradication to begin.
But you know me, I'm a romantic. I've said it before and I'll say it
Again: This country blows, man. It's not even a country. There are no roads,
there's no infrastructure, there's no government. This is an
Inhospitable, rock pit shit hole ruled by eleventh century warring tribes. There
Are no jobs here, like we know jobs.

Afghanistan offers two ways for a man to support his family: join the
Opium trade, or join the army. That's it. Those are your options. Oh, I
Forgot, you can also live in a refugee camp and eat plum-sweetened, crushed
Beetle paste and squirt mud like a goose with stomach flu, if that's your
Idea of a party. But the smell alone of those 'tent cities of the walking
Dead is enough to hurl you into the poppy fields to cheerfully scrape
Bulbs for eighteen hours a day.

I've been living with these Tajiks, Uzbeks, and Turkmen. And even a
Couple of Pushtuns, for over a month-and-a-half now, and this much I can say
For sure: These guys, all of 'em, are Huns... Actual, living Huns... They
LIVE to fight. It's what they do. It's ALL they do. They have no respect
For anything, not for their families, nor for each other, nor for
Themselves. They claw at one another as a way of life. They play polo with dead

Calves and force their five-year-old sons into human cockfights to defend
The family honor. Huns, roaming packs of savage, heartless beasts who feed
On each other's barbarism. Cavemen with AK-47's. Then again, maybe I'm
Just cranky.

I'm freezing my ass off on this stupid hill because my lap warmer is
Running out of juice, and I can't recharge it until the sun comes up in a few
Hours. Oh yeah! You like to write letters, right? Do me a favor, Bizarre.
Write a letter to CNN and tell Wolf and Anderson and that awful, sneering,
Pompous Aaron Brown to stop calling the Taliban 'smart.' They are not
Smart. I suggest CNN invest in a dictionary because the word they are
Looking for is 'cunning.' The Taliban are cunning, like jackals, and hyenas, and

wolverines. They are sneaky and ruthless and, when confronted, cowardly.
They are hateful, malevolent parasites, who create nothing, and destroy
everything else. Smart. Pfft. Yeah, they're real smart.

They've spent their entire lives reading only one book (and not a very
good one, as books go), and consider hygiene and indoor plumbing to be
products of the devil. They're still figuring out how to work a Bic lighter.
Talking to a Taliban warrior about improving his quality of life is like
trying to teach an ape how to hold a pen; eventually he just gets
frustrated and sticks you in the eye with it. OK, enough. Snuffle will be up
soon, so I have to get back to my hole. Covering my tracks in the snow takes
a lot of practice, but I'm good at it.

Please, I tell you and my fellow Americans to turn off the TV sets and
move on with your lives. The story line you are getting from CNN and other
news agencies is utter bullshit, and designed not to deliver truth but
rather to keep you glued to the screen through the commercials. We've got this
one under control. The worst thing you guys can do right now is sit
around analyzing what we're doing over here, because you have no idea what
we're doing, and really, you don't want to know. We are your military, and we
are doing what you sent us here to do.

I once got a long splinter buried in my thumb when stripping paint off wood.  The doc said he could try to cut it out but it would be messy and I'd be better off letting the body expel it.  It took about a month and the thumb was hurting and always feeling hot; I'd try to squeeze it out but no dice.  One morning I was getting out of the shower and noticed that I could see it more than in the past.  I squeezed it and it came right out.  It was like an inch long and immediately the thumb felt better and started itching a bit.  There's a small scar which you can see on the thumbprint but nothing like there would've been if it had been cut out.

402 Linux won't usually recognize cutting edge hardware. Thats a given. When I moved (upgraded) my business I needed about 20 servers. First server was top-o-the-line hardware, the cost was about 5k, linux did not like it whatsoever, so I decided to make that one a windows box and go with hardware that had been out about a year. Found the right set of stuff that would run under Linux (for about half the cost) and duplicated it on the rest of the machines I built. Decided to offer "Windows hosting" on the expensive machine. Looked into it, and saw that for every $24/mo. (the going rate) account I sold I'd have to pay Microsoft $20/mo for each "user". Scrapped that Idea and the 5k hardware has been sitting on the floor ever since.

Purp: Technology hammer, bane of tech hipsters everywhere!

I had a friend who went through the "Linux is the bomb and so much better than everything" phase. (He's a computer scientist/programmer)

He uses windows 8 now.  The final converter? he plugged in a fancy new wireless printer, entered his WPA key, went over to his computer and it had already installed the drivers and set itself up.

There's something to be said for the monolith.

Stupidest thing though was I used to volunteer for a charity that took old computers, reassembled them and gave them to low income kids who completely a computer skills class. I finally left when the group that took over was so anti-Microsoft they loaded the computers with "edubuntu" it's an Ubuntu variant that's for "Education."

POS is what it is.  Flash was still a thing then, and these computers came with dial up internet for the kids for 1 year, so even though they couldn't youtube, with enough patience they might be able to play some flash games, EXCEPT after 2 hours or work, I couldn't get any of the Linux distros of flash to install on this thing.

They switched because we had been effectively pirating XP for the computers (each likely came with a license for the original purchaser...but well..complicated.)

Anyway, I told them "MS actually has a program that covers this, I can fill out some paperwork, make a few phone calls and get all the free XP licenses you could ever want.  Maybe some money too."  They balked at me for an hour about how they'd "never support MS." I walked out and never went back.

I'd point out that in theory we were supposed to be giving this kids PCs so they'd have knowledge of them and be able to learn skills to help them get through high school and eventually maybe take a job as a secretary or something (having some computer skills) but instead we gave them PC's with a nonstandard OS and a nonstandard office suite.  Brilliant.

Posted by: Captain Hate at April 25, 2013 09:16 AM (4pFVG) Same thing last 4th of July. I shuffled my foot in the grass and felt a sharp pain. There was a piece of toothpick sitting in the grass. Hurt like hell and I thought it just struck a nerve in the right spot. Pain came and went over the next month when I walked on my foot. I was sitting on the porch massaging my foot since that helped a bit. Next thing I know a toothpick appears out of my foot like when a lightsaber is turned on. Relief after that.

412 Lawmakers from both parties are in talks to exempt themselves and their staffs from having to join Obamacare health exchanges. You know what else our lawmakers are exempt from? OSHA. Now you have to ask yourself why? Are the House and Senate so completely risk free? I doubt it very much. Lawmakers KNOW that OSHA is THE #1 TOOL of disgruntled employees. Nobody, anywhere can produce a workplace that they (actually either the employee or OSHA) can't find fault with. Our political betters can't let the proles get the better of them.

Brilliant. You think kids can't migrate from one office suite, taking skills learned to another? Yeah, I guess some can't. But there's another part of the equation to consider, and why I think schools *should* use non-standard OS's. The support needed to clean the freaking viruses these kids drag into the school every day with their flash drives is a nightmare. Internet connections slowed to a crawl, file transfers to a crawl, server crashes multiple times per day. I like windows but I'll be damned if I would ever let anyone plug a flash drive into my computer. Just the other side of the coin.

418 that's a poor test for LINUX

I don't think using hardware that it claims to support is an unreasonable test.

I'm not looking to buy new shit, I'm looking to use the shit I got.

Microsoft puts huge effort into install and hardware variation testing.  That's what professionals do when they produce a PRODUCT.

Linux desperately needs productization.  The integration testing that done on any given distro is epic lame.

Seriously -- there's still freaking PS/2 port mouse detection issues on a lot of distros and motherboards.  Mandriva was one of the first to kinda get that right 5 years ago, and Zorin does OK, but Suse/Slack/and Debian still fuck it up pretty bad.

424 Take your anger and shove it up yours.

Frustration != anger.

I accept that Linux is what it is, and 5 years or so of kernel and driver hacking I did some years ago fiddling with shit trying to make it work aren't nearly enough to hold back the tide of crap that breezes into the code base constantly.

I gave up trying because of people with your "this is great shit attitude".  Its not great.  Its got severe problems.  I've 15+ years developing operating systems and testing them.  I DO have a clue about this shit.

Its not a fully tested, ready for sale at OfficeDepot OS, its a semi-finished kit that may or may not install on any given machine.

Have you noticed that boxed Linux distros kinda vanished from the shelves at Office Depot and CompUSA?

There's a reason for that.  Processing returns is expensive.  If Joe Sixpack was having success using Linux on his Compaq or Dell shitbox, those retail disros would still be there.

If you got the same configuration as the distro builders did, congratulations -- YOU WIN.  If you don't, you lose.

You think some people could migrate from one OS taking skills they...yeah I'm laughing as I type that.

Mac's big protection right now is small user base.  It gets much bigger and you'll start seeing dastardly viruses for it.

(One of the worst things I ever saw was for a mac, because it made use of that moronic resource fork they came up with. You'd embed the malicious code in the fork of an MP3.

It'd open like an MP3, play like and MP3, meanwhile it'd install malicious code.  Administrator account rights are how you protect computers, mac, PC, Linux. It sucks that it took them to windows 7 to get that right, but at least we're finally there.

Your choice, Darrell, and if you want to include this decision to Mirandize the scumbag murdering pig up in Boston, that's cool. 429 423--it's a matter of expectations and the subsequent honing more than anything else. If you don't demand sme minimal level excellence as the price of acceptance, you won't get it. As far as our second Boston bomber--I don't know if the Mass. (and other) police forces were doing invountary door-to-door searches the day of the hunt. My guess is they were, or something pretty much involuntary, though I am not actually going to focus on that, nor on the city-wide lockdown. But at any rate, as the police congratulate themselves on their massive show of paramilitary force, and think that is the way to go, and that they are the best of the bestest I hope they reflect on this one little salient fact. They didn't find the guy, a citizen did. The police state failed. Meaning other people can, in any one moment in time, do some things better than the authorities can do. Always a useful lesson for anyone to learn, but especially the police--the universe is not divided into yourself the competent, and everyone else the feeble.

Sorry but that's bull. OSX is basically unchanged since they came up with it. I can walk people through the settings by memory. iOS is the same in iphones/ipads.

With Windows, let's talk about Network Connections (XP), Network and Sharing Center (Vista/Win7) and whatever they call it in Win 8. I can add 15-20 min on every support call for Win8, since it will take that long to walk a customer into finding the stuff that used to be on a menu. Find me a support person that likes Win8. I'll be surprised.
