Happy Monday.

The New York Review of Books scooped the other news organizations to find "Misha," the person the Tsarnaev's uncle said "brainwashed" Tamerlan Tsarnaev into radical jihad. Over the weekend, word surfaced that Russia had recorded wiretaps of Tamerlan "vaguely" discussing jihad with his mother. The word on Twitter is that Russian special forces have raided a group with possible links to Tamerlan, but I haven't seen it on the wires yet.

Republican Rep. Mike Rogers was SWATted. So was Wolf Blitzer.

Top GOP donors are pushing the party to support gay marriage.

Reporter takes probably the best accidentally cool selfie you'll ever see.

Iraq suspended Al Jazeera broadcasts for "unprofessional reporting which escalated sectarian tension."

This one dude is SUPER into Google Glass. I suspect it's something like most people feel about smartphones. Once you get used to having near-instaneous information and communications, you don't want to go without.

15 #6  Here's the latest from AP via the Weekly Standard:

A powerful explosion damaged an office building in the center of the Czech capital, Prague, Monday, injuring up to 40 people. Authorities believe some people are buried in the rubble.

It is not certain what caused the blast in Divadelni Street, but it was likely a natural gas explosion, police spokesman Tomas Hulan said.

The street was covered with rubble and was sealed off by police who also evacuated people from nearby buildings and closed a wide area around the explosion site.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Hope you had a good weekend.  Now itÂ’s time to return to that soul-deadening eight-hours-of-my-life-flushed-down-the-toilet tedium called ‘work.Â’  But before that:

Last week I told you a ‘bad SinatraÂ’ story.  HereÂ’s a ‘good SinatraÂ’ story:

This took place sometime in the early ‘70s at Nicky BlairÂ’s place on Sunset Boulevard.  Sinatra was in the kitchen, playing poker with his constant factotum Jilly Rizzo as well as with Burt Reynolds and the usual crew of hangers-on.

I donÂ’t have the exact quote in front of me, but someone once wrote that, in SinatraÂ’s presence, women preened and became sexier, men puffed up and swaggered as everyone tried to match the Sinatra style.  Frank got a kick out of that, but if someone, trying to curry favor with the Chairman, stepped out of line, he cracked the whip.  So keep that in mind and join me here in the corner as we watch one of BlairÂ’s busboys rush by, carrying a tray of glasses. . .

Hector, as his name is, suddenly trips and drops the tray, glass shattering everywhere.  Nicky Blair storms in, sees the mess and yells, “Hector, youÂ’re fired!”

“Just a minute.”  The voice is FrankÂ’s.  Everyone stops.  “Nicky, how much do those glasses cost?”

“I donÂ’t know, Mr. S," Blair says impatiently.  "Ten, twenty dollars each.  Why?”

Mr. S gives a signal to one of his guys, who pulls out a wad of cash and begins peeling off Franklins.  One, two, three – ten, twenty – forty-three, forty-four, forty-five. . .

Frank hands the money to Nicky.  “Bring me forty-five hundred dollarsÂ’ worth of glasses.”

Nicky shrugs and gives the command.  Hundreds of glasses are pulled out and placed at SinatraÂ’s feet.  Now, Frank points to us.  Or, no – heÂ’s pointing to Hector, who comes over warily.

“Hector, do you see all these glasses?”

“Si.”

“Good.  Now break ‘em.”

For a moment, Hector hesitates.  Is this some cruel joke?  But Frank nods, a slight smile at the corner of his mouth, and Hector begins to smash.  Glass after glass after glass, until nothing is left.  Now Frank crooks a finger to Nicky.

“Clean that up.  And every time I come in here I want to see Hector working for you.  Understand what IÂ’m saying?”

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

“We are not in favor of democracy, democracy is for Jews and Christians,” he said in recent propaganda video.

“Elections are intended to divide Muslims; we want the implementation of Sharia (law) and for that jihad is necessary,” he added.

Sven, the biggest problem I have with gay marriage - other than the fact that it's a totally irrelevant position considering the DOOM! we're faced with - is that the people pushing it the most are either willfully blind or determined to ignore the elephant in the room, which is that gay marriage is not the end.  There will always be one more "civil right" demanded, one more "final" concession.

I think Gabe is a nice fellow, but look at the evolution - twenty years ago, the idea of gay marriage was dismissed outright by the gay mainstream.  It was the provenance of the bourgeois straights.  Now it's a "civil right."  Twenty years ago, anyone advocating that teens practice same-sex kissing would have been laughed out of the schools.  And where are we now?

Attrition was a big factor there. A lot of the 'promiscuity as a sacrament' and those who held long term relationships in contempt, they died.

It's a form of cultural evolution. If you favor behavior that tends to get you killed, those left standing are going to have different ideas.

I'm OK with civil unions.  I'm not OK with marriage.  I'm not really sure why that word has such power.  For years marriage was only for "breeders."  Now all of a sudden it just HAS to be marriage.  Whatever.  I don't really care too much if gay couples have the same rights as marriage.  Fine, go for it.  I only have 2 requests.

1) Leave my Church out of it.  The gay community as a community hates my Church anyway, so its not really any skin off their collective noses if the Church says "men and woman only please."  Get over it.  There are plenty of Churches out there, find one.  Or make your own.  Or go be Episcopalian, they're cool with it all.  Quit co-opting things you don't care about anyway. because if you truly cared....you'd follow the rules of the Church.

2) Quit telling me you're "normal."  You're not normal. I'm sorry about that, and I am sure life sucks in a lot of minor and annoying ways, but it's not my fault.   Quit making it my fault.  "Normal" is, by definition, what the majority is doing on any given issue.  The majority is not gay.  Period.  If it were, the human race would have died out 5,000 years ago.  This is not a civil rights issue and frankly the black folks are pretty pissed you're using their example to make it one.

Let's say I'm at a Meetup and someone there is wearing Google Glasses and the light comes on.   What happens when I, or anyone else, says "hey turn that off" and the person refuses?   Will that person leave?   Will they be thrown out?   Will I have to leave if they refuse to stop recording and they won't leave?   You're also assuming that I will be facing the person who is recording and will know that said person is recording the second it starts.   That is a rather huge assumption.

168 Vision of the future... The City of Philadelphia wants the Boy Scouts to be prepared — prepared, that is, to change their views on homosexuality or get out of the city-owned building they have occupied for 80 years. "As a city government we cannot allow discrimination in the delivery of services on public property; that is the issue," said Mayor Michael Nutter. "The Boy Scouts, they have some options here — they can change their policy, they can pay full-market rent, or they cannot be on public property." The future for churches? Lose tax-exempt status, move out of an area, or change their policy. The Boy Scouts are a preparation for manhood. Preparation for working in the same building with people of different race, color, gender. Where talking about sexual matters in any way places the employer at risk and is not just frowned upon, but just cause for dismissal of employee.

The culture will have to adapt. Because cameras, storage, and data links will only get cheaper, better, and more convenient.

The current version of Google Glass only has 16 GB of storage. Which would let you record a big chunk of your day, except the batteries aren't up to the task. But it won't be long before the storage is capacious enough to take in whole days continuously so long as the power holds out.

David Brin wrote a novel in 1990 that did a pretty good job of predicting this trend, although we may be a bit ahead of schedule as that book was set in 2040. In 1998 he wrote a non-fiction take on the issue called The Transparent Society: Will Technology Force Us to Choose Between Privacy and Freedom?

Another SF take on the ultimate camera, a technology that along any point in time or space to be recorded, was the subject of a Stephen Baxter (working from a synopsis by Arthur C. Clarke) novel called Light of Other Days. This took inspiration from the prevalence of surveillance cameras in London turning hoodies into a popular fashion. In that story, not only was anyone's privacy lost but all of history was subject to a scrutiny it had never received before. A lot of long standing question finally had answers but not necessarily ones that many wanted to hear.

This has been a long time coming.

204 #117  Well,  I hope you are right.  However,  at mass yesterday our priest discussed the discrimination Christians face (if not outright persecution ) in many countries.  He also mentioned that the Catholic students in public schools in our area are increasingly mocked for their positions on this subject.

Obama deliberately picked a fight with the Catholic Church over birth control,  which could have been given to people in other ways,  such government-provided vouchers.  It is a deliberate attempt to make the Church bow to the will of the State.

The second part of their attack is gay marriage,  which once passed will be the beginning of gay couples demanding to be married in Catholic Churches.

243 I expect it won't be long before some situations REQUIRE technology like Google Glass to be used. It has been common for several years for cop cars to record everything that happens in front of them.

Reduce the cost and you'll want a lot more people to be recording their time during a particular job. Imagine how different things might have played out if George Zimmerman had been recording everything on the night he encountered Trayvon Martin. Having this for a Neighborhood Watch volunteer is a given once it becomes cheap. We have cheap video cameras already but hands free recording of everything in your POV makes for a far more usable precaution.

280 Yeah, Glass is such a "wonderful" idea.  You don't own the Glass device, so Google can open it and shut it off as they see fit.  Currently, you can't sell it without Google's permission or lend it to someone else. The user doesn't own the wireless connection or the Cloud storage, and if you're being investigated/sued/stalked by other Glass users good luck getting access to their raw data stream.  Oh boy, I can use it on a fishing trip!  OK, but if that catch is under the size limit, you better put it back because you have no idea who's watching.

314 #213

It's still quite early. Having an affordable wearable display like this took decades from the time they were first conceived. Then a lot of other stuff had to come together to make it do anything interesting.

A GPS receiver was once a fairly pricey item all by itself and it didn't do much other than provide coordinates. Today it's just a sub-feature of a phone you get for free with a two year contract, and it includes software that would have been amazing if depicted in a science fiction movie in the early 80s. Heck, the first navigation package I ever used was a Skytrak package that ran on a laptop. We tried it out on a trip from LA to San Francisco to pick up some equipment we'd been offered for free if just came and got it. In San Francisco the Skytrak product revealed a terrible flaw: it didn't know about one-way streets. That was in 1998.

Compare any high tech product to the version that is offered ten years later. In less time than that we went from the Super Nintendo to the Playstation 2. We went from the original IBM PC running DOS from floppies to 486 PC running Windows 3.x. Consider the changes tot he Web from 1992 to 2002.

Once this product category is established, things will move fast. Especially with other companies looking to grab a piece of the market. Just a few years ago tablet computers were a struggling niche category with strength in a few vertical markets. Now they are a consumer item with sales measured in the hundreds of millions.

334 I have no expectation of privacy in a public place, and conduct myself accordingly. Posted by: Anthony L. at April 29, 2013 08:00 AM (bl6Iq) Define public. That's truly the question. Is public defined as anywhere that is not a private home? Let's say I'm at a bar or restaurant with friends. Since that is a business, does that mean any other patron there has the right to take photographs and/or video recordings of me, without my knowledge or consent? If I am in someone else's private residence, is that public, since, after all, it's not my residence? I agree that when I am shopping at Target I should expect to be filmed by the security cameras the entire time I am there. But if I am at a bar and I am not working the till, then, no, I do not expect that my every action while inside the bar will be filmed, let alone filmed by another patron. That's an ancillary matter, who has the right to film and photograph in a public space? The owners of the space? The general public? Other patrons?

To me, there is a difference in kind between walking down a street and being in a bar/restaurant. One is truly public while the other has at least a societal expectation that other patrons will not make what happens there public information. These are the issues that are going to have to be worked out. As far as digital cameras and any and all Meetups, I would rather hope that the Horde has enough common decency to ask the attendees if they will allow a picture to be taken before so doing.

Yes. And frequently over the employees' objections. It works both ways. The employee gives up their privacy as much as anyone they record.

There has long been a nightmare scenario in which an employee becomes little more than a meat robot for the software managing the business, with every action by the employee dictated in real time to them. Part of that scenario would call for the employee to wear sensors that let the management software see what they see and respond accordingly.

Plenty of workers are recorded constantly for the protection of the company and themselves. When was the last time you went into a place like a 7-11 that didn't have a camera watching and recording to a hard drive in the back room?

None of this is all that new. It's just reducing the size and cost to drive the tech further into the world.

You can use both.  Cake flour gives you a more tender crumb.  Just depends on what kind of cake your doing.  Some kinds need to be a little "gutsier"

Hit the King Arthur Flour Co. website.  That's the "go to" spot.

490 mama winger, sift your AP flour and for every cup, remove 2TBSP and replace with cornstarch. If you don't have cornstarch, then just remove the 2TBSP. For instance if your recipe calls for 2 cups cake flour, do 2 cups sifted AP minus 4 tablespoons, with 4 tablespoons cornstarch if possible. Rationale is the cornstarch will reduce the percentage of protein (gluten) in your flour making it closer to cake flour.

I hear its a state law there that when you utter that phrase you have to lift up your shirt and show off your spray-on tanned abs.

506 Sven, I just get very pissed when all people do is bitch. I refuse to give up my party to those who would pervert it. If not me, then who was my thought at the time, and yeah, it was a losing cause. I did feel better for actually having DONE something though.

513 Re "gay" marriage:
WA state had passed laws previously giving gays a civil union with all the rights of marriage. It wasn't enough, so they passed laws legalizing gay marriage.  First lawsuit up is against a florist that refused to sell a gay couple a wedding bouquet. She has sold the couple flowers in the past but would not provide wedding flowers as it violates her religious views.

Keep all that in mind as we go forward. It's what is in store for the rest of the country. And yes, I expect them to use the tax exempt thing to try and force gay marriage into the churches.

514 508 Anthony L,

I respect you and Truman's efforts and I mean that in all sincerity.  It gets real old real fast when the New England "enlightened"(and I am not saying you or TN are this) start telling the nation "you have to do X,Y+Z" to "win" and "winning" looks a lot like losing....

515 410 Noam Chomsky is now saying Obama is worse than Bush. Funny how libs didn't figure this out until after he was reelected. They never do, and then are amazed when unicorns and lollipop trees don't pop into existence.

Glass is just the first big brand instance of a technology that will soon have entries from many companies in a wide array of variants. You are missing the forest for the trees. Glass is just an example of the capability that now exists and is improving every year. It is only Glass that is controlled by Google. A guy stocking shelves at Costco that gets handed a headset and is told to wear it from the moment he clocks in to the moment he clocks out is not going to see a Google logo on the device. (More likely it will have a brand like Symbol, which he already knows from the handheld scanner the headset replaces.)

What you said is akin to claiming there cannot be any porn on PCs because IBM has never been in the porn business.

525 by the way my ire is mostly aimed at the Mumbles Menino, Deval, Lieawatha gang not individual New Englanders...I know I am inelegant...

The Donk Beanie Babes basically allowed the entire crisis and crime to be used as a club to attack the right nationally...never uttered a single peep about 'let's not jump to conclusions and focus on what we know"....

just like Mr. Moose and the DC sniper shit....

if any of you save possibly Lincoln feel I was 'blaming you" I apologize.

The "enemy" is political violence exxpressed through extremist action and in this case radical Islam....

I am not a fan of politicial violence, I do not have a shrine to McVeigh etc etc because well McVeigh was not exactly a Milton Friedman economic thinker and killing folks is generally "wrong" unless sanctioned by natural law or the state.

I would like it if one day the type of idiot I overheard yesterday at the Burger joint who had a Hillary! 16 sticker would figure out I as a republican did not raise her insurance rates....

Barry did.

527 my son downloaded a Windows operating system onto his MacBook Pro when he first bought it. He wanted the capability of using both systems on the same laptop. I don't know HOW he did it, but it can be done.

Apple has instructions on their site - you can either run Windows in a window or dual-boot.  Either way it's supported.

528 524 Anthony L,

Some calmer day I'll have to ask you if you walked away feeling the "game" is rigged...

I think the guy who is "GOP" but has a pen pal relationship with Deval Patrick is typical.

Anyway it takes a lot of balls to "run" and I can't...too many skeletons in my closet and since I would be an "R" they'd come out and they'd "matter"

Crook County owns the state because of population. Plus there are a number of liberal burbs in some surrounding counties. It's amazing how many people buy into liberal policies that they don't want to affect themselves in any way
