2 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, April 05, 2013.  On this day in 1951 Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death for giving away atomic secrets to the Russians during war time.  They were executed June 19, 1953.  The liberals are still whining about this.

President Barack Obama will offer cuts to Social Security and other entitlement programs in a budget proposal aimed at swaying Republicans to compromise on a deficit-reduction deal, a senior administration official said on Friday.

Under a proposal that would cut the deficit by $1.8 trillion over 10 years, the president will offer to apply a less generous measure of inflation to calculate cost-of-living increases.

However, the president will only accept these spending cuts if congressional Republicans, for their part, agree to higher taxes, the official added.

Saying “I don’t think I’m done with politics,” former Senator Scott Brown stressed his ties to New Hampshire following a speech in Nashua on Thursday and refused to rule out a run for elective office in the Granite State.

He recently accepted a job at the Boston law firm of Nixon Peabody and is working as a Fox News contributor. He rejected the notion on Thursday that his affiliation with the conservative network might hurt his standing with moderate voters.

“That’s why they hired me, it’s because I am a moderate,” Brown said. “They don’t have a moderate voice in the news media today on any station.”

He also touted his moderate voting record in Washington, calling himself “the least partisan senator” during his tenure who bucked the GOP leadership on nearly half of his votes.

Good morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  TodayÂ’s story is about the almost-otherworldly beautiful Hedy Lamarr, whose performance as a love-starved wife in the film Ecstasy gave her the nickname “The Laurence Olivier of Orgasms.”  I was told the story yesterday by my barber, who said heÂ’d read it in LamarrÂ’s own memoir, Ecstasy and Me.  He placed the time of the story during her Hollywood years, but it apparently took place much earlier.  ItÂ’s a sex story, so those of you who donÂ’t want to know should probably scroll past:

It seems that in 1933, to escape the notoriety of Ecstasy, her parents placed the young Hedwig Keisler into an arranged marriage with an Austrian armaments manufacturer named Friedrich Mandl.  An extremely controlling man who forbade Lamarr an acting career, she was kept a virtual prisoner in MandlÂ’s castle, Schloss Scwarzenau.  Deciding she could no longer tolerate the marriage, Lamarr ran away; depending on whoÂ’s telling the story, she either disguised herself as a maid or dressed to the nines, telling Mandl she had been invited to a fancy dinner.

Either way, she vanished, and in doing so, came my barberÂ’s story.

Apparently, when Mandl realized Lamarr was trying to leave him, he pursued her.  As she was running, Mandl was so close on her heels that, at one point, she snuck into a brothel to hide (other stories claim it was a club that showed pornographic films, but may have hosted a brothel as well). In any event, when Mandl arrived, Lamarr stripped naked and took refuge in one of the rooms.   You can guess what happened next - the male customer then arrived, and she was forced to have sex with him so her husband wouldn't recognize her when he broke in, searching for his wayward wife.

And so Lamarr made her way to Hollywood (taking her name after doomed star Barbara La Marr, whom I talked about last week) and took her place among MGMs galaxy of stars.  And somewhere in Austria, a man hitched up his pants and went home, never knowing heÂ’d achieved the wet dream of millions of men the world over. . .heÂ’d slept with Hedy Lamarr.

ThatÂ’s it for today.  Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

A high school senior who wrote an open letter to the Ivy League universities that rejected her has sparked a firestorm of anger, with readers accusing her of being 'entitled', 'whiny' and even racist. But others have praised Suzy Lee Weiss, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the honesty and 'accuracy' of her article, which appeared in the Wall Street Journal on Friday.

She said she wrote the piece after she was rejected from a string of schools in one day. Despite the teenager's 4.5 GPA, an SAT score of 2120 and work experience as a U.S. Senate page, she was shunned by Princeton, Yale, Vanderbilt and the University of Pennsylvania.

In her article she blamed not getting into the schools on the fact that she was not 'diverse' enough, and she even accused her parents of giving up on her because she is the last of four children.

98 One quick comment and then I'm outta here: Posted by: Laurie David's Cervix at April 05, 2013 07:22 AM (kdS6q) It's possible that she's both spot-on right AND being a whiny little brat. Those are not mutually exclusive. No one promised her admission to some Ivy League school, and there is absolutely no shame in going to one of their feeder schools if you think you must absolutely have an "Ivy League Education." There are lots of kids every year who could be accepted into very good schools- sometimes Ivys- and never go to college for a variety of reasons- one of the most common is "can't afford it." So it seem little miss "I'm not diverse enough" could still have a path that many of these poor-but-gifted students would commit major felonies to have. That said, it does suck if the primary problem was that she was rich and white.

Arnold Simon, the former CEO of Calvin Klein jeans and Aris Industries, took the unidentified woman to the chic Surrey Hotel bar Feb. 4 for their first date, and spent most of the night bragging about his expensive duds, she claims. Classy guy

164 You can thank Les Aspin for the F-35. It was one of his genius cost-saving moves during the Clinton drawdown. Because a plane that can give you the same capabilities as a Hornet, Harrier, Thunderbolt and Falcon is totally feasible. No, wait. It sucks in any role. Forget the cracked fan blades - that's a fixable issue. Pilots have no visibility to their rear. In a fighter. The test pilots have been savaging this piece of shit in their reports.

166 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). Worked with engineers and techy business majors from there and they were always excellent. Concur based only on limited experience. Everytime I've run across an RPI grad on active duty, I was impressed. But my zone was NJ, PA and NYC out to Hofstra. So I had Hofstra, St. John's, Fordham, Seton Hall, Rutgers, Temple, Drexel, Widener, UScranton, Penn State, Bucknell, Lehigh, Lock Haven, Gannon, Slippery Rock, IUP, Dickinson (a college, not a complete sentence), TCNJ and Princeton. Best Cadets in that area overall? Lehigh, Princeton, UScranton. Worst? Temple.

Others obviously disagree with me on this point too, but frankly I don't think it's necessary to use curse words on the  internet.  I certainly know how to use them, it just seems like there are more creative ways of expressing one's self, without being offensive.

210 McNamara was an epic disaster. But part of his problem is that he brought in the "whiz Kids"from the Ivy League who had the degree, but no idea how the world actually works. We all know how that worked. You know where I see that model being replicated these days? You knew this was coming...didn't you? The Obama Administration. Just below the senior level, ESPECIALLY in key positions at the National Economic Council, Domestic Policy Council and National Security Counsel are 25-year old Ivy League and London School of Economics grads only 2 years in the workforce who have NO FUCKING IDEA what they are doing. None. But since they grew up being told they are special snowflakes, they cannot comprehend this simple fact.... They're idiots. They hit those two with treason in time of war. Current penalty for treason by military is a little more vague

Any person subject to this chapter who, with intent or reason to believe that it is to be used to the injury of the United States or to the advantage of a foreign nation, communicates, delivers, or transmits, or attempts to communicate, deliver, or transmit, to any entity described in paragraph (2), either directly or indirectly, anything described in paragraph (3) shall be punished as a court-martial may direct, except that if the accused is found guilty of an offense that directly concerns (A) nuclear weaponry, military spacecraft or satellites, early warning systems, or other means of defense or retaliation against large scale attack, (B) war plans, (C) communications intelligence or cryptographic information, or (D) any other major weapons system or major element of defense strategy, the accused shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct.

For civilians you have 18 USC 2381

Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.

301 CMU! Hell, I thought you were talking about Central Michigan.

I met a Hawaiian shooter at Camp Perry several years ago, who had been awarded a rifle scholarship to Carnegie-Mellon, then had the program shut down before she started. She was asking around about Pa. clubs where she could practice. That was kind of hard to take.

They were stand-up on the money, at least. Due to NCAA ratio rules (inflicted due to the widespread cheating in Those Games of Ball), rifle coaches never have enough scholarships for one full squad, so everybody gets a partial, on the assumption that all shooters will qualify for at least a partial academic scholarship. They paid her the amount the partial promised.

But, no team. There are now no collegiate rifle teams in the entire Commonwealth, despite their juniors going on to TCU, WVU, and a bunch of other national champions. Ryan Tanoue and Newt Engle wouldn't have it any other way.

I think she ended up shooting with Frazier-Simplex. Great club, but no NCAA.

I don't see anything here about the attack having to be successful. They had made it all the way to going to the meeting to pick up the weapons for the attack. Procuring weapons for the sole purpose of attacking a military compound is "levying war" in my book.

342 Well Lindh has a special place where I keep the scum sucking villainy on a list.

Along with Sgt. Provoo on Corregidor who walked out the tunnels in a kimono speaking Japanese and later responsible for the Japanese murdering a US Army doctor. After Japan surrendered he was given an honorable discharge and is now buried in the Punchbowl with real Americans.  If you visit the Punchbowl to pay honor to the graves and find his, piss on it.

Or Edison Miller, USMC F-4 pilot who was shot down and ended up in the Hanoi Hilton.  While in the Hilton he lead radio broadcasts to support the North Vietnamese and would rat on other POWs.  Nixon's Sec Def Laird laid down the law that no POWs returning would be tried for treason.  Which is why Ed Miller is still breathing unless you put him in a room with other POWs who did make an attempt on his life already.

343 White House Scraps Jewish Heritage Month Reception by KEITH KOFFLER on APRIL 5, 2013, 8:43 AM The White House is picking winners and losers as it cuts back because of the sequester, and a planned reception for American Jews is getting the short end of the stick. Many other events are proceeding as planned, but according to the Jewish news service JTA, the annual White House celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month is canceled. “Jewish invitees usually include luminaries in the arts, sports and sciences, lawmakers, armed services personnel and the Israeli ambassador, as well as organizational leaders and political supporters of the president,” according to JTA. The sequester cuts kicked in March 1, but that hasn’t stopped the White House from staging a variety of fun events marking all sorts of occasions. The celebration of St. Patrick’s Day last month included an East Room bash with hundreds of guests and a separate breakfast party at the vice president’s residence. Tuesday, the Obamas took in an exclusive viewing in the White House theater of the movie “42,” which chronicles the life of Jackie Robinson, with the film’s cast and crew. Earlier, in the day, Michelle hosted a “42 Film Workshop” for kids in the State Dining Room that featured Harrison Ford. Obama even got in a reception for the Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings and major league soccer champs LA Galaxy on March 26. And there’s money around to transport him to the golf links, where he traveled by motorcade last weekend. Next Tuesday, the Obamas will be treated to a command East Room performance “celebrating” Memphis soul music, with performances by stars like Justin Timberlake and Queen Latifah.

393 Jeebus, Mexicans worse off than Chinese peasants. No wonder the illegal aliens flooding the USA, and all manipulated purposely on the grand scale since Nixon/Kissinger "Communist China MOST Favored Trade Nation" globalist invested directive. Given NAFTA a matter of international trade law, aside from open borders, where's the security for economic investment into Mexican industry, for purchasing private property, and even the means to gaining Mexican citizenship? When any people could earn a living in their own country of boundless natural beauty, they would. Take US citizens, for example. When the Dollar tanks and all of the international agreements function against the American workers... Meanwhile, "our" amnesty comprehensive immigration reform GOP politicians exploit the meaning of citizenship while the Donks add voters to their ranks. 'With all the best intentions' simply means all the more for the politician-privateers. So long as there's fresh meat, who cares it's origin.

Friday night, June 21 is really the best night. 419 All of you who do not care one farthing about Sluggor can skip the following.  It is a bit longish but does show he has a brain that works on occasion.

For MWR

Invoking the magic word plan conjures up Sluggor's internal checklist for his coming test.  He had debated wearing a helmet but decided that unhindered senses was more important than some boiled leather protecting his neck and head.  His chest was protected not by some simple piece of boiled and stiffened leather made of one piece, but more like what is worn by the soldiers of the Empress' Own Legion.  Upper chest piece that covers the shoulders is two pieces front and back that leather straps over the shoulders tie together.  But just below the armpits the armor becomes strips of metal and leather about two inches wide that overlap slightly and taper until the bands stop at the waist.  One leather strap, about halfway between the armpit and waist, on each side with the shoulder straps tie the whole piece of armor together.  For the legions of the empire there would be another layer of metal in each band to make a sandwich of metal, leather, and metal.  Also semi-circular shoulder guards that would lay over the shoulder joints to protect them from most damage would be present.  But Sluggor's armor lacks that extra metal banding and the shoulder guards as again Sluggor has traded greater protection for greater mobility.

444 Obviously the nation's job markets are not hot button topics on the political blogosphere -- given the demographics of political blogs and their audiences -- but still it's worth pointing out that today's BLS report particularly was gruesome. Last month the nation's labor force declined by 496,000. Think about that for a moment. That's equivalent to the entire population of a major metropolis. Although payroll employment edged up by 88,000 (we need at least 150,000 to keep up with population growth) household, i.e., total employment last month declined by 206,000. Wage growth last month actually was negative, if you factor in inflation. Bad times.

Yeah, I was going to do The Horde Meets the ZA for NaNoWriMo once and then realized it would be about 10 words long. Zombies attack. The Horde kills them. Then the drinking resumes.

Throw in some Daryl Dixon and this story could easily go for many, many chapters, quite a few of the X-rated.

*le cough*   But I digress.

Heh.   I've been half-writing a short story in my head about Republican strategists    during the ZA    trying to think of the best way to appeal to the newest special interest   group voting bloc:  zombies.

STRATEGIST 1: (the cynic)    It's impossible.  There's no way we'll get them to vote for    our guys.

STRATEGIST 2:  (the starry-eyed idealist)  Don't think like that!  We just have to appeal to their sense of humanity.

STRATEGIST 1:  Their humanity?   Buddy, these folks have been    voting     Democrat since the day they died, and nothing     we    do is going to change that.

STRATEGIST 3:  *comes running into office, covered in blood and carrying a head and   machete*       I got one!   I got one!

STRATEGIST 2:   Great!   Put it with the others.    *points at pile of    groaning    zombie heads*     We've almost got a focus group!

493 http://is.gd/hWLnrE is a pretty good article. I like what she says about people's spending habits. What we now refer to as "middle class" doesn't look a whole lot like the middle class that used to be.

And Vic, you're technically right about the debtor's prison article, but you don't understand what local jails look like these days. It's all about the money. It costs taxpayers to put these people up in jail. I suspect that the counties are getting some sort of government money based on the number of folks incarcerated. It's the only reason I can see for the types of fines and sentences they are handing out.  Most of the "crimes" these people are in for are really trivial.

I briefly considered getting into it on Twitter with a woman who thinks it's horrible that girls are being taught to look after their own finances because they should be taught to get married, but I'm too tired.

This woman got married right out of school and has never had to work full time to keep herself out of her parents' basement; nice life if you can get it, but why try to screw over women who can't?  That's what I don't get.

557 WASHINGTON — The Pentagon is putting the finishing touches on rules that will give military commanders clearer authority if they have to respond to an enemy cyber-attack, military officials and cyber-security experts say. Defense Department officials have started talking more openly about offensive cyber-capabilities, including the creation of 13 teams capable of offensive operations if the United States is attacked. "This is all putting the world on notice, particularly the Chinese, that we're tired of them breaking into private companies," said Richard Bejtlich, chief security officer at Mandiant, a computer security company. The so-called rules of engagement will "provide a defined framework for how best to respond to the plethora of cyber-threats we face," said Lt. Col. Damien Pickart, a Pentagon spokesman. Rules? The civilized thing to do would be to take away courts' power to levy fines, mandate purchases, sell debt, or claim "fees" for supposed public-good services.

But we're not civilized, so we should probably build some uh work-it-off camps for people with expired driver's licenses.

In these documents, it appears that the key piece of evidence used to convict Ethel (i.e. the statement which claimed that Ethel Rosenberg had typed up the secret information) was probably not true. "Also last week, Morton Sobell, who had been tried and also found guilty of spying with the Rosenbergs, has finally broken his long-standing claim of innocence and admitted to being a spy. In an interview with The New York Times, Sobell implicated Julius Rosenberg in the conspiracy but stated that Ethel Rosenberg was only guilty 'of being Julius' wife.' 620 Even back in the bad old Patriarchia days when women were expected to "mind the homestead", the budget was part of those responsibilities.

In the really Good Old Days of female dependency the husband could take out mortgages and make investments without the wife's sign-off. More than one story among my grandmother's friends about women who lost their husband and then learned they were up to their necks in his debt.

Can you still do that?  I've no idea.  But I still don't see a problem with telling young women to plan for their retirement.  If they get married, they can replan; if they don't, they're not fucked.

I love this headline over at Drudge.

'BIG BOOTING': Police Warn Students Not To Play Game Of Kicking Each Other In Head...

CBS Boston Local: http://boston.cbslocal.com/2013/04/04/lynn-police-warn-students-not-to-play-kicking-game/

LYNN (Mass.) (CBS) – Lynn Police are warning students not to play a kicking game that has led to criminal charges against at least one student. The game is called “Big Booting.”

“One student would walk behind an unsuspecting student and kick them in the back of the head,” says Lynn Police Lt. Chris Kelly.

Lt. Kelly says at least two incidents have been reported at the Marshall Middle School...

That this is something kids need to be told -- "Don't kick each other in the head" -- is   just one more indicator of how increasingly stupid our country has become.

I actually did go from my dad's house to being married and I am beyond thankful for every financial lesson my Dad and stepmom pounded into my brain in high school. My husband didn't have that and he definitely paid a price for his ignorance in the time before we got together. And yeah, one spouse can def take out small debts without the other's sign off, and I think mortgages. There was a big deal a few years ago---now lenders can give a loan to a nonworking spouse, using the working spouses income to qualify, without checking with the working spouse.

What they fail to mention in that NYT article is that it only prevents their definition of pregnancy if take within 1 or 2 days.  If taken later than that (after the fertilized egg has attached to the uterus) it causes a miscarriage.

Even if you don't have a problem with abortion, "birth  control" by miscarriage is dangerous as hell.  Especially when you are talking about children.

692 617 IF Ethel was in the same room as her husband and David Greenglass as they talked about passing on the atomic bomb secrets to the USSR then Ethel is guilty. ================ Yes. I've been perusing "Spies: The Rise and Fall of the KGB in America" and "Venona: Decoding Soviet Espionage in America" by John Earl Haynes, et al., via Amazon. In the latter, Haynes summarizes his position on Ethel Rosenberg as follows: "The Venona messages do no throw her [Ethel's] guilt in doubt; indeed they confirm that she was a participant in her husband's espionage and in the recruitment of her brother for atomic espionage. But they suggest that she was essentially an accessory to her husband's activity, having knowledge of it and assisting him but not acting as a principal. Had they been introduced at the Rosenberg trial, the Venona messages would have confirmed Ethel's guilt but also reduced the importance of her role."

Posted by: shoeless hunter at April 05, 2013 10:03 AM (dY+4R)

693 Ugh. The first sentence of that quote should read: "do not throw," emphasis on the not.

Posted by: shoeless hunter at April 05, 2013 10:04 AM (dY+4R)

694 Once more unto the breach. Here is the opinion of Ron Radosh and Steve Usdin from a fairly recent article: "As for Ethel RosenbergÂ’s role, the evidence is unequivocal. She recruited her brother as an atomic spy and provided logistical support to Julius's espionage activities. She knew at least two Soviet intelligence officers, and they considered her a loyal and trustworthy compatriot. The most frequently cited exculpatory evidence, a decrypted transcript of a KGB cable stating that Ethel "does not work" could be, and most likely is, a reference to the fact that she did not have a job, rather than confirmation that she did not work for the KGB. She and Julius may not have deserved the death sentence, but she was not innocent." Source: http://tinyurl.com/bwtj8qq (New Republic, Dec 6, 2010)

Posted by: shoeless hunter at April 05, 2013 02:35 PM (dY+4R)

695 The closing remarks from that same Radosh/Usdin article are also worth reposting here: "hese Soviet spies were recruited out of the U.S. communist movement, whose leaders knew of and covered up the RosenbergsÂ’ espionage, and, when they found out that those arrested would not talk, waged a worldwide propaganda campaign to portray the Rosenbergs as victims of AmericaÂ’s imperial thrust. The RosenbergsÂ’ belief in the Soviet Union and communism was the motive for their actions. "Julius began working for Soviet foreign intelligence during the time of the Nazi-Soviet Pact, when Stalin and Hitler were cooperating in the brutal division of Eastern Europe. Hence, the notion that Julius was simply working to oppose fascism is baseless. "As in so many other episodes of this era, it was the anti-communists, and not the apologists for communism, whom history has proved correct."
