Happy May Day, comrades!  (Actually, it's the feast day of St. Joseph the Worker.  Wonder if the commies appropriated it after the Catholic Church or the church accommodated them with his selection.)

Since we're following the UK in Muslim tolerance, will this be next?  Gross.

So my son had a diversity interview yesterday at his private Catholic high school. I had no idea they would do this.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Thanks for the morning briefing, Vic.

For those of you outside of MA, the “moderate Republican” Gabriel Gomez won the GOP primary vote to go up against Ed “The Toast of Chevy Chase” Markey.  As you might expect, the usual suspects were all calling in to radio shows this morning, urging people to take a nice big bite of the RINO shit sandwich in order to save the country.  My opinion?  As one caller to WRKO said, IÂ’d rather vote for Gomez Addams than Gabriel Gomez.*

Now to story time - as IÂ’ve mentioned before, I donÂ’t like Katharine Hepburn.  I find her to be extremely annoying, both as an actress and as a person.  But I do have a nice story about her, and here it is:

Jayne Meadows (later Steve AllenÂ’s wife and the sister of “Alice Kramden” Audrey Meadows) knew that her best feature was her smile.  But after initial tests at MGM, she was told that her teeth were too white.  So, trying to be a good studio player, she spent the next several months doing her best not to expose her teeth and, as a result, developed a complex about it.

It so happened that one day she was in the middle of makeup tests for HepburnÂ’s 1946 movie Undercurrent.  The director asked her to smile; promptly, Meadows explained, “Oh, they told me not to smile.  My teeth are too white.”  Hepburn overheard the remark and stepped to MeadowsÂ’ side.  “My dear,” she said, patting the actressÂ’ shoulder, “they told me not to smile because it made me look like a horse.  IÂ’ve made it pay for years.  Smile.”

HereÂ’s another MGM story, this one starring the great Ethel Barrymore:

Barrymore was signed to Metro late in her career, and by that point she was much more interested in baseball and boxing than she was in acting.  During the filming of one movie, Barrymore was sitting in her dressing room listening to the ball game when there was a knock on the door.  “Come in,” Barrymore called, and through the door came a young Esther Williams.

“Miss B,” Williams asked, “are you going to see the dailies?”

“No, my dear, no,” Barrymore replied.  “I never see dailies – never.”

The perky Williams, always anxious about her own acting abilities, asked, “But Miss B, doesn’t it help your performance to see the dailies?”

Barrymore looked at Williams, her turquoise eyes shining.  “My dear,” she said imperiously, “I never saw myself on the stage.”

And thatÂ’s it for me.  Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*In the episode Gomez, the PeopleÂ’s Choice, Gomez runs for mayor, with the slogan, “Watch His Smoke!”  ItÂ’s very funny; catch it on Netflix if you can.

63 Vic, I live in MA and was in Markey's district, he was elected in 1976, before I was old enough to vote. Now my city has Capuano as a representative, the entire MA delegation sucks. I can honestly say I have never cast a vote for any of them. I wrote my own name in when those fools had no opponent. Last night I quickly added up how many voted in the primary, it was less than 800,000. There may have been more later but that was total for both primaries. I know quite a few people that hate Markey and took a dem ballot to vote for Lynch over Markey. I took R ballot and voted for Sullivan. All of us are not morons. A friend emailed article to me yesterday about Gomez being nightmare for others to run against. I wouldn't cast a vote for a republican that supported Obama, gave him $ in 2008 as a "favor" to a friend. Gomez should have run in D primary. Some on RMG are going to support him because he is the GOP candidate. I might vote for him or stay home because Markey will probably win and I do not want another senator that is willing to cross the aisle, in other words vote with the dems and be a disappointment to conservatives like Scott Brown.

Not a Jesuit school or I wouldn't have sent him. He's a senior so we've taken the measure of the place and it has served him very well- scholarship offers at every school he applied to- and this is one of the few times I have run into something at all disturbing there.

Mary Poppins- my son's responses where to call the interviewer out on the pride bit by saying that he was also proud of his white heritage and to say that he would rather get a job because he works hard and is smart.

There will be a response. I'm still formulating it. I will respond directly to the interviewer for his racism.

Folks- this is the best school hands down that I have encountered and I went to multiple high schools in different places myself and took the time to see what all the locals have to offer. If even they start pushing racial grievance mongering we are screwed.

http://is.gd/Js7SGN

The NEA is not a union; they are a lobbying (and arm-twisting)* outfit.  It really doesn't make any difference in terms of effect but it might in a court.  In my mind, it makes the situation worse.

* Their strength lies in threatening school districts to do as they demand.  If the districts refuse, the NEA has massive legal resources to wear down the limited budgets of schools.  Most schools just knuckle under.

Not really, Anna, though it's more of a DeMaupassant thing - I love having written, but I hate to write.  My problem is also, being a movie fan, I tend to see scenes in much more detail than anything else, and the effort required to get that image down on paper is frustrating.  Still, I've got a lot of free time coming up over the next few days, so I'm going to do my best to chain myself to the desk and at least get this one scene (involving resurrection / reincarnation and 1917-era special effects) down.

Thank you for asking.  You're very kind.  How's our old friend Sluggor doing?

After voting for Kennedy, Kerry, Bawney Fwank and Lieawatha Warren, picking the current two shitstains probably felt like an act of political courage to the Massholes.

Surprisingly, in my town the voter turnout was fairly high. Friggin' idiots.

The GOP needs to develop a strategy here, a good cop/bad cop tag team, if you will.  What we most need is someone in the background directing things, but with no interest in running himself.   Yes, I'm talking about a puppeteer or a kingmaker.  There is a reason such people have always existed.  Right now, we've got lots of independent actors running around, trying to rise above the herd, like crabs in a pot.

If only there were an organization whose job it was to do such things, and do them well and intelligently.  Yes, we would run the risk of the dreaded establishment picking our candidates, but note the qualifiers I included.  As it is, the party looks like Keystone Kops.

I went to public schools. Everyone says 'hey you're smart' [and OK, whatever] but I always tell them that's just native intelligence. It was never developed by the public schools and they did me a profound disservice by not making any effort towards discipline in thinking. That came much later, and at my own effort. There are still huge gaps that show up at odd times but I know they're there.

145 Come on Icedog, you know there are certain height and weight limits for a 407L pallet depending if you are going C-130 or C-5 and location inside each plane.  Plus the plastic visqueen and how you net the pallet.

Plus the matter of your vehicles.  Once loaded must have less than half a tank of fuel.  Then take it to get weighed to get a final reading for front and rear axle weight plus where the CG is for that vehicle.

I thought of an interesting twist to this push for gun control.  I would like to see the Republicans publicly propose an amendment that says "You can have your gun control, but as soon as there is a single mass shooting, all provisions are null and void."  This would force the Dems to either say that they 100% believe that gun control would prevent mass shootings or to acknowledge what they know to be true (but want to pretend isn't) that gun control can't stop people with bad intentions from getting guns.

They're not all jokes.  But you need to investigate a bit as to who is running them.

My Diocese has 2 of the Top 50 Catholic High Schools in the nation.  It also have several which are...being charitable here....not fully Catholic.

Like anything else, caveat emptor.  A little homework during the admissions process goes a long way.

164 Guess I really am out of touch then. In my world 15yo kids are, well, kids- so I find this whole trend to sexualize them ----- I'm skeptical about all this "15 year old's are kids" thing. To put it crudely - Its a fairly recent idea that old enough to bleed isn't old enough to breed. I don't condone it or condemn it, mainly because I don't care enough (if at all) about what other people do with their time.

166 Welcome to popular culture, pal. This is not surprising with all the support Polanski gets from Whoreyweird. Parents have a responsibility to say fuck that shit and point out when idiots dress their girls like sluts and what a poor job they're doing in raising a child with any degree of self respect. I don't care if people don't like that; I need people like that in my life like an STD.

It appears that many parents don't teach their kids to respect themselves, or anything else, anymore.  Mrs. Nighthawk and I worked (and prayed) very hard to make sure our daughter, now 24, learned to respect herself, her parents, her fellow human beings, and God.

And we did that within the "Popular Culture" so it can be done, but it ain't easy and I resent the living Hell out of the government for pulling things like this which only make it harder.

No offense, but I'm not exactly interested in it from a religious angle. Its funny. The wife doesn't want the kid to go to a Catholic school because she doesn't want religion 'shoved down his throat' and have 'guilt piled up on him' but she's open to Protestant schools. I'm telling her she's living in a 50's fantasy world of what Catholicism is about and anyway they advertise "in the Catholic tradition" which is code for "we're not all that catholic". Protestant schools, OTOH, won't allow Halloween to be celebrated, won't allow proms, etc etc

170 It's a fairly recent development that bleeding started before late adolescence as well.  Age of menarche in the Middle Ages was 15-16, and your life expectancy was almost half-spent.  I am not a big fan of relativism in general, but it was a different world and the average teenager was likely far more mature a thousand years ago than now.

Oh, no offense taken at all.  But the point still holds.  If you're going to a Jesuit high school, you can expect more politically correct wackiness. So fidelity to Catholic teaching in high schools ends up being a proxy for intellectual rigor here.

And you're exactly right, your wife is running a cartoon in her head about what Catholicism is - especially now.  To each his own.

We never really shopped for private schools when we yanked our oldest out of a bad situation in public school ten years ago. We had friends at this school who raved about it, and have family at another private Christian school not far away that said it was a little too rigid.

So we dove in to the first one we found and never looked back.

I expect that each can be very different, one from the next, depending on who gave the money for the land, who gave the money for the buildings, and whoever is currently running the board.

Cruz is one of the most intelligent, direct, unapologetic people to come along in some time. One thing that has truly killed the party is the waffling, technocratic, demographic squishes who can't articulate any particular position because they are always straddling the fence.

We need leadeship, not politicians. People who have a vision and are not embarrassed to express it, water it down to liberal-lite. Someone who can change the party image most folks have of the party for old white guys. We are better, more inclusive and smarter than that.

People thirst for thoughtful, smart as a whip leadership. Cruz fulfills that desire IMVHO.

Yeah, it's a good place for the "hardware" and they have great prices.  They limit the popular ammo to one or two boxes per, but most places do that too anyhow.  If you good it and go to their Facebook page, they constantly update their new arrivals.  If you are planning to buy something new, you should check them out.

235 I went to private school (Baptist) for 14 years. Pre-K all the way through Graduation. And while there were things I don't agree with (my school pretty much mirrored the movie Footloose), it taught me far more positive life skills than negative ones. I remember in 6th Grade the teacher deemed that the boys had to pull out chairs for the girls at their desks. That lasted until shoving/yelling matches started over the prettier girls. I also remember in 2nd Grade the teacher telling us that she refused to go out on a second date with a guy because he didn't understand why she was still sitting in the car and he was headed in to the restaurant.

On one hand, the Boston bomber must have been pretty damn bad to be denied entry to Mecca. I'm assuming he was going for the Hajj, and they let every Muslim in for it. On the other hand, I suspect the Saudis are a little tougher on non-Arab Muslims so while every dirkadirka jihad can get into Mecca, the Eastern European Muslims probably need to be on a little better behavior.

So I was driving in to work this morning and saw a bunch of news vans in front of the high school across the street from where I work.   Fox 25, WHDH 7, etc; the Boston stations.  "Well that can't be anything good," I thought to myself.  "When Boston starts trundling up here to    do on-location news stories in li'l ole NH, it either means there's been a bomb scare or a fucking politician is wandering around loose."

I don't know which is worse, to be honest.

Anyway, turns out that some kid    rehearsing for the school play last night    had been acting weird and depressed all day, and when his friend tried to talk to him about it      he    pulled a gun on her.   I don't think there was any actual SHOOTING, but   the   cops    arrested him and are charging him as an adult.  No name's been released, though, so I'm guessing he's a juvenile (makes sense for a high school kid).

263 Are there any morons from Strongsville Ohio?  A teacher's strike of at least 8 weeks was ended in the past week and it seems like the union may have taken some major pipe from the reactions that I've seen.  First of all, the local MFM is in the tank for the teachers so you have to employ some filtering devices to figure what the real schiznit is.  That said, there were a lot of students who talked glowingly about the replacement teachers and how much they will miss them; and nary a word about how far behind the fucking 8 ball the strike put them.  Second, some on camera interviews with parents illustrated some strong animosity against the teachers for pulling this horseshit in the current economy.  Finally the harridan that the union chose to be their "face" really belongs on the back of a milk carton.

It seems like the school board really hung in there and refused to knuckle under to budget busting demands.  If so kudos to them.  It *can* be done.  There was talk about some teachers crossing the line right before the settlement so I'm sure that's no coincidence.

But honestly?   I've never really understood the male aversion to theater and other performing arts.  I understand that   it's not a particularly masculine endeavor, like sports or cars or anything, but   you know what it DOES have?

Girls.  Lots of girls.   Often really pretty girls who dream of being the next Gwyneth Paltrow (hey, I said pretty, not smart).

You'd think at least one or two of the smarter        male students    would    take one look at the typical     high school theater production     and    think to themselves, "JACKPOT!"      And    3/4   of the time    they'd be guaranteed a lead role!

292 Just catching up on the news.  I saw the Plan B pill has been deemed safe for girls as young as fifteen without a doctor's prescription.  So, a girl of fifteen is perfectly capable of making informed life and death decisions, but an adult of twenty six is incapable of even finding his own health insurance.  Makes perfect sense to me.  When will be lowering the smoking and drinking ages?  I guess in liberal land smoking a cigarette is worse than killing a kid.

295 You'd think at least one or two of the smarter male students would take one look at the typical high school theater production and think to themselves, "JACKPOT!" And 3/4 of the time they'd be guaranteed a lead role!

Old roommate of mine did the sound crew tech stuff for our college theater.  He said the girls would test their mics by making sex moaning sounds and faking orgasms.  The parties were fantastic he said.

Posted by: Vic at May 01, 2013 08:00 AM (53z96) Try working outdoors for a living this time of year. You start every morning layered with sweatshirts and stuff and spend the day stripping it off as it warms up. Which is fine if you're working next to your truck, but sucks when you're five miles into the woods. I've left many a Sally's Army sweatshirt in the woods. Not to mention the morning dampness -- cold wet boots and pants 'til noon every day really sucks.

Posted by: Sean Bannion at May 01, 2013 08:30 AM (sbV1u)

I got lucky.  My Jesuit school was still run by old school Jesuits when I went there.

There was one crazy wacko Jesuit, but by the time I left they had literally sent him into exile (he couldn't live in the community, he wasn't allowed to teach, he was effectively a parish priest at a church a few miles away.)

He tried to undermine the president.  He wanted to set up one of those "Gay-Straight alliance" things.  Force pledge signing taken straight from Rainbow Alliance. (Plus students could wear pins that it was supposed to be "safe" to come out to them.  Because teenagers, that will end well.)  President told him "No, come back with something actually Catholic and not so stupidly risky and we can talk."  He set up a table and "started" it while the president (and principle) were out of town at a conference.

They literally flew back in that day/evening the next morning *poof* he was gone.  I was on a student advisory board at the time, so I got to see how pissed off the rest of the Jesuits that he tried this.  Foaming at the mouth angry that he'd take shit from the rainbow alliance and try to pass it off at acceptable to Catholic teaching.

At one event, the local cops vs fire department boxing thing, she and her best friend helped all the other girls get ready first. They all leave. The best friend helps my wife get ready and the wife leaves. So the best friend and I are the only ones still in the dressing room. "Hey, come help me." Apparently, there's this giant brush that looks like you'd put blush on with it, but it's actually got glitter in it. "Put this on my legs while I finish my makeup." Being a guy, I attempt to do this and it comes out in a big chunk in one spot. She mock glares "Well? Fix it." So I'm down on one knee, rubbing glitter all over this seriously hot girl's legs and one of the other dancers walks back in and freezes. The best friend doesn't bat an eye, "Don't worry, his wife knows. We're good."
