— Gabriel Malor Happy Thursday.
Sorry guys, almost no links from me again this morning; I've been swamped at work. Howie Kurtz did provide some amusement on Twitter last night, and that's all I've got.
Oh, and I just saw on Twitter, another electric car maker filed for bankruptcy.
Oh, and what the hell. Here's NYTimes' frontpage plug for a story on Medicaid:

There's an editorial decision here to trumpet the findings "reduced depression!" and "financially secure!" and to contrast that with "Florida's time runs out!" Not to mention the snore-inducing headline, properly translated: "taxpayer-funded healthcare increases use of healthcare." But if you go into the story, you'll find this thing that's kinduva bombshell:
It found that those who gained Medicaid coverage spent more on health care, making more visits to doctors and trips to the hospital. But the study suggests that Medicaid coverage did not make those adults much healthier, at least within the two-year time frame of the research, judging by their blood pressure, blood sugar and other measures. It did, however, substantially reduce the incidence of depression, and it made them vastly more financially secure.
Making and keeping people healthier is the reason for the program. But, hey, did you know that people are more financially secure when somebody else pays their medical bills? NYTimes really wants you to know that.
And note also the weasel words, the contrast between the almost casual "did not make those adults much healthier" and the strident "substantially reduce" and "vastly more financially secure."

Nevermind that the reason I couldn't get insurance was because insurance companies until NEXT year have been able to deny people who have had pre-existing conditions, like high blood pressure (me). And they have done that because next year they will have to take everyone, due to Obamacare.

The Church has always had a problem with capitalism, principally because most priests are not educated in economics or business.
I do not ascribe sainthood to business owners, but the unemployment is due to more than people being selfish (unless we are talking about Obama, which I don't think he was).

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Thanks for the news, Vic.
As you might have heard, the lovely Deanna Durbin has died at the age of 91. There really aren’t any “stories,” as such, about her, and her career can be summed up fairly quickly – she and Judy Garland began at MGM, but Louis B. Mayer thought Garland had more star appeal. So Durbin went over to the nearly-bankrupt Universal and brought them back into the black with the musical comedy Three Smart Girls. She made many films for Universal, then, tiring of studio life, retired to a small village in France, refusing to give interviews, photographs or autographs, but by all accounts, leading a very happy, content life.
HereÂ’s a luscious picture of her: http://tinyurl.com/cxdjads
But it’s not just outside Hollywood that you can be anonymous; you can be an unknown in Hollywood, as well. Take the case of the great cinematographer James Wong Howe, who, during the 1930s and ‘40s, was one of the most in-demand cameramen in Tinseltown.* Like many in the profession, he opened a restaurant on the side, and the local press sent a photographer to record the event. The surly newsie didn’t know anything about Howe – to him, this was just another assignment. So he pulled Howe and his staff out to the front of the restaurant for the typical “new chophouse” photo. As it turned out, he couldn’t fit everyone into the picture, so he backed into the street, with cars zooming past on either side.
Howe didn’t want to see the man hit by a passing car, so he called out, “You should use a wide-angle lens.”
“Stick to your chop suey, pal,” the photographer shot back, “and let me take the pictures.”
HereÂ’s a picture of Lionel and Ethel Barrymore during the shooting of 1953s Main Street to Broadway. Howe, in a suit jacket, is behind them, placing lights: http://tinyurl.com/cv8ur2h
And thatÂ’s it for me. Hope you all have a wonderful day.
*A few of his credits: KingÂ’s Row, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Sweet Smell of Success, The Molly Maguires.

CEO compensation is set by the board of directors, not the CEO. If you don't like the way the board operates, then vote your shares and get new directors, or just sell your shares and be done with it. You can even boycott the company's products!

Someone was nattering on the other day about the CEO of JCP making too much more than cashiers there.
While fully acknowledging that particular CEO has been doing a suck-ass job and it would be better for the company to tie exec pay to performance metrics than to just shovel money at them, why on Earth would you pay someone performing a rote task (and more often than not snarling at the customer for interrupting their gossip session, I hate shopping) the same as someone tasked with making major decisions?

Hopefully, everyone on this website would agree that whatever someone makes is their own business. However, CEO's who give ammunition to the socialists are just stupid.
Compensation can take thousands of hard-to-nail-down forms. U.S. executives should look to Sweden to find out how to rape companies, live like kings, ass fuck stockholders and still look to the dimwitted public like responsible businessmen taking reasonable salaries.

Stock options were the result of unconstitutional congressional meddling in pay caps. I know the board of directors are the ones that set the pay scales but that is really a big smokescreen.
All of these CEOs site on the boards of other companies and they vote each other these huge salaries.
When I retired the asshole that ran my comapany had just been paid $10M as a bonus above his normal salary. He actually LOST money for the company and the stock took a huge dive.
They wanted to know what I would take to stay on. I told them I would take $10M to work for another two years. They didn't appreciate that.

However, members of boards of directors often are CEO's in other companies, or political retirees who have a skewed view of compensation (see federal salaries and pensions). So they all reinforce the compensation from company to company.
On the other hand, the fact is that if you halved CEO salaries, that money would not be distributed to workers, anyway.
I never really thought much about CEO compensation until Dear Leader started going on and on about greedy doctors and business owners, while shoveling tax money to every two-bit crony who gave him a donation. But when I started looking around, I saw a huge number of democrats who are getting money for doing nothing, or actively destroying their companies.
So, when all is said and done, I believe it is the responsibility of the CEO to use wisely the financial blessings he receives , and to treat the workers fairly.

While it's true that boards have a right to set CEO pay however they like, it doesn't mean they SHOULD be paying the way they do. Greed can be, and often is, sinful.
Second, many companies that trade publicly manage to operate essentially without shareholder oversight precisely because so many shares are held by mutual funds, and other sources that don't have "active" participation by shareholders.
Fund managers don't necessarily care how a company operates, just whether its stock goes up. So the system is far from perfect.

Those are the institutional investors I was talking about in my post. And they do vote. Most vote in a manner that they feel is god for the company and the stock, which basically means vote for the status quo or whoever the company throws up.

Wrong.
From that perspective the system works perfectly. The fund managers' only responsibility is to maximize profit within the constraints of the funds' prospectus.
Any other behavior is unethical and probably illegal.

What eventually happened was that the lazy turds wanted to invest it in the fixed income plan, which gave you a guaranteed positive rate of return. Since everything I said was true, the custodial firm said "Fuck this shit" and said they couldn't absorb all that jack and invested it in the safest alternative, a US bond fund. Those are usually pretty fucking safe, except when interest rates rise, which they did and, as a result, participants in the fixed income fund, of which I was one, received a negative rate of return for which no explanation was given but I gladly supplied to anybody who asked me.
After I left that fucking dump, I spent some effort talking to an ambulance chaser about filing a class action suit against those cocksuckers. I was pretty sure I had the goods on every one of those fuckers. I ultimately didn't do it because it would take too much time for what it was worth, a lot of people whom I didn't like would probably benefit from it, the useless fucks who profited would never reap the penalties, and, most importantly, they'd probably pin it on somebody relatively innocuous in it. But it was still a shitty situation which never should have happened.

I pointed out that they had made announcements to the kids daily with all the info they needed. She said, "You know these kids aren't responsible enough to make sure we know this stuff." I pointed out that parents think the kids should be treated as adults but then turn around and complain when the school does just that. And people think it's a good idea to let a 15 yo make important decisions without a parent's guidance.

I viewed this from day 1 as an effort to provoke interest in him which his basketball ability never did, at least at the highest level. He was only in the league because he is 7 feet tall. The league GMs lose their minds over that to the point that they're still considering offering the always injured Greg Oden a contract for next year.

So, I've said many times that I am not an NBA fan, and that's still true. But I must admit to feeling a bit of smug satisfaction this morning over the beating the NY Knicks are getting in the sports media because of their behavior leading up to and during the game against the Celtics last night. Wearing black because it was going to be a "funeral" for the Celtics' season? Are you kidding me right now? Not only is that stupid in general, but I also think it's in pretty bad taste considering the grass hasn't even had time to grow on the graves of the three people killed in the Marathon bombing. Geez, Knicks, try to show SOME class, would ya? And didn't you learn ANYTHING from the Houston Texans marching into Foxboro in letterman jackets?
If there's one thing I like about the NBA, it's when spoiled prima donnas get taken down a peg. And thanks to the NBA's habit of giving little boys multimillion dollar contracts, there are plenty of prima donnas to go around.

We discovered later that the 401K money had also been deposited in the company account and no money had gone to the mutual fund.
The bonus thing was legal, although pretty crappy, since it was a way to avoid giving him any actual money, and it was not specified how bonuses would be given in the contract. The second was probably illegal, but I figure it will catch up with the owner eventually.
Yes we agreed to it. No, it wasn't something that was a result of capitalism but rather that of greed. It probably wouldn't have happened in a large corporation (for those who are convinced that small businesses have the aura of sanctity about them).
People are people, and many are not very nice. The system allows this type of crookedness and cannot prevent it. But I will not pretend that this is something my husband AGREED to, nor will I say that the owner bears no responsibility.
This is probably why my husband is known as a pretty fair boss, even in places where it would get him no advantage. He has been on the other side and knows what can happen.

SEATTLE (AP) — Police used "flash bangs" and pepper spray against some protesters who pelted them with rocks and bottles late Wednesday, as violence erupted during May Day in Seattle.
Several dozen protesters, many using bandanas to cover their faces, began clashing with police in downtown Seattle hours after a peaceful immigrant-rights march ended.
Protesters threw rocks and bottles at police officers and news crews. As they moved through downtown Seattle to another nearby neighborhood, they flung construction street barriers, trash cans and newspaper bins on the streets in an attempt to block advancing police officers. Windows of local businesses were broken and vehicles with people in them were banged around.
Mostly peaceful. Spin it AP, spin it.
The violence stemmed from a march that billed itself as an "anti-capitalism" protest. Initially, the protesters concentrated on a business sector of downtown Seattle.
"That first march came downtown. It was absolutely peaceful...it was almost a festive affair and they had some serious messages, too, that they wanted to express. No incidents whatsoever," McGinn said. "The second march was very different, and it wasn't just merely because it was unpermitted. I think it also had to do with the nature of the individuals in it and what they wanted to do."
Unpermitted? Better check the dictionary on that one. When you have idiot mayors like this best thing is for evil capitalist businesses to leave and let the city rot

"I can confirm that DHS did remove two potential trafficking victims this morning," said Brandon Montgomery, a spokesman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "
The incident was first reported by the local NBC affiliate, which also reported that Fairfax County records show that the building is owned by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. NBC reports that "one woman reportedly tried to flee by squeezing through a gap in the front gate as it was closing."
"We don't know anything about that," said a spokesperson for the Saudi Embassy when reached by phone on Wednesday. "The report that we got is that the house belongs to the Saudi armed forces, like the military office."

Reading the article, the man's adult daughter who was present at the execution continues to insist he didn't kill the baby. Now I understand that this is her father, she loves him, okay. But he RAPED A SIX MONTH OLD. Even if he hadn't "accidentally smothered her" after the fact, HE RAPED. A. SIX. MONTH. OLD. BABY. The internal injuries alone probably would have killed her, the poor little thing. It was monstrous.

When I was in college, Dave Winfield signed with the Yankees for 10 years for $23 million making him the highest paid player in sports. In one of my economics classes, we were discussing this and most people couldn't understand why a team would spend that much money on one player. The professor pointed out that the team would only do it if they believed it would put more butts in the seats and that they could charge more money for a ticket because people wanted to see him play.
Companies behave the same way. They pay a CEO in relation to what they believe he (or she) will do for the company. If they don't believe it to be a good investment, they don't hire that person. I don't know what a fair price would be. That's their job. Sometimes, it works; sometimes, it doesn't.

Not true Vic.
It's a tactical retreat to look good. Nothing more. The FDA already lowered the age to 15 (the judge had declared no age restrictions at all.) So DOJ is claiming that renders the case moot since whoever brought it seems to have brought it on behalf of a 15 or 16 year old.
But that'd just be a chance for Obumble's to claim he cares, while the hard left finds a younger kid to sue on behalf (Setting up another round of capitulation.)
The whole thing is busted though. The notes about not needing ID's to buy condoms is like comparing a Kleenex to an allergy pill.
The bit about abortion is misguided too, since that's probably a fringe issue compared to concerns about young kids dosing themselves with powerful medications. Strangely though those were the two foci of the article.

Reid on Wednesday afternoon stood by comments he made on the Senate floor last week comparing Tea Party-affiliated Republicans to 19th century American anarchists.
“I believe that, my experience with the Tea Party is that they are against government in any form. They throw monkey wrenches into the government,” Reid said during an interview on the Rusty Humphries Show.
“It’s evident. We can’t get things done. They don’t want anything to happen in government,” he continued. “We pass laws. They fight funding the laws we pass. They don’t want government to work. I want it to work.
“We have a situation where this country has been driven by the Tea Party for the last number of years. When I was in school, I studied government and I learned about the anarchists,” Reid said. “Now, they were different than the Tea Party because they were violent. But they were anarchists because they did not believe in government in any level and they acknowledged it. The Tea Party kind of hides that.”

My only consolation in our side losing the culture wars is that-not that I'll be around to see it, and it would be a disaster for humanity, perhaps one from which we'd never recover-if the leftist bastards win, they'll be engulfed in a flood tide of militant Islam so damn quick they won't know what hit them. I wanna see the bastards suffer under a real theocracy, not one that consists of "homophobia" that's really just not celebrating deviants(Not gay folks, deviants. See Folsum Street Fair or Up The Alley for examples. I've been called a homophobe because I think they're disgusting, never mind that it would be just as foul if the sexes were mixed) and an actual war on women. The wails and moans from libtards will be epic.Too bad I'll be long dead when it happens.

Morning everyone. I live in the Seattle area and when I turned on the local news last night they were near the riot crowd interviewing a guy who was just following the action and cleaning up trash. Not an old guy (nobody with any sense would be anywhere near that scene) but a 20-something kid who was just going along picking up trash. Some of my faith in humanity was restored until I noticed some idiots were throwing plastic bottles and other trash at his head and back while he was being interviewed by the reporter.
This city loves these losers and encourages this kind of behavior. I was living in Pittsburgh when the G20 protests happened and even though they have a Democrat-run city government they didn't put up with any of this crap. It just isn't part of the culture there like it is here.

On the other side of the one-way glass is an innocent, feeble, traumatized white woman, standing next to a detective telling her to “nail this little sucker.” The woman is shaking, wounded and crying in fear over whatever these scary black men have done and might do to her in the future. Black men are frightening and violent, that’s well established in the first few seconds of the commercial. There is also another white officer, and a black man standing in the back corner. One side of the glass is mostly criminal, 100% black. The other side of the glass consists of the “good guys,” nearly all of whom are white.

That's because it showed one large component of motive was to target the crush-site and/ or one or more admins, and to get the site shut down.
It indicated also the possibility of repeated sabotage-posting.
See the old thread on Moby Meg, towards the end, for an example of her floating rumors and directing suspicion on the admins themselves for writing the offensive post. (When of course she knew the whole time they had done no such thing).

gets 114 miles on a charge
You know what these specs on "all electric vehicles" always seem to leave out? How long it takes to recharge. It's not as bad now (not nearly, considering my new client), but I used to do pretty close to that in my commute (round-trip).
Once you consider travelling (say, to a parent's house, or whatever), it becomes even more inconvenient. One of the great things about gas is that I don't have to plan my trip around gas-stations; I pretty well know there will be one when I need it.
This was not always the case, but I can carry a gas canister in (or on) my car. It's really hard to carry around a recharging station.

Miami's on the scene just in case you didn't know it
My town, that created all the bass sound
Enough to shake and kick holes in the ground
'Cause my style's like a chemical spill
Feasible rhymes that you can vision and feel
Conducted and formed, This is a hell of a concept
We make it hype and you want to step with this
Shay plays on the fade, slice like a ninja
Cut like a razor blade so fast, Other DJs say, "damn"
If my rhyme was a drug, I'd sell it by the gram
Keep my composure when it's time to get loose
Magnetized by the mic while I kick my juice
If there was a problem, Yo -- I'll solve it!

Again, they are still in prototype stage, but imo if electric cars are going to be a "thing" within the next 10~15 years it would be this direction.
Fast chargers make it a little better, but what's worse (and I see no fix for it on the horizon) is the variance in battery life. That is, the same car might be good for 114 miles, or 100, or 120, depending on things like temperature, whether or not your running the A/C or Heater, and so forth.
My gasoline powered car, however, I know will take me to-and-from work 5 times on a little over 3/4 of a tank of gas. Every. Time.

Your undetermined oyster beds
Were found to be a hedge
You cause the kids of Elmer Fudd
To feed the farmer whose
Cadaver's filled with onion rings
And feet are filled with glue
Now sinister exaggerator
What's your claim to fame?
Is still your favorite Ferlingetti
Found in Auntie Maim?
Your alter life is superseded
Only from above
Your hear is like a silken sponge

Longer term(2030 earliest) will be self-driving cars which will enable:
1) Shedding of safety features no longer needed, like tons of steel.
I disagree. I work with computers for a living. One thing I know is True (like, Law of Entropy "True"), is that computer software has bugs. Sometimes these bugs only come out in the weirdest of edge-cases, but the bugs exist. All it will take is one crash w/o all those safety-features, and all the safety-features will be back.
Given the shere number of cars on the road, I am terrified of the concept of self-driving cars (as a general rule).

Success in a pseudo-market consisting entirely of regulation isn't business success in the admired-by-Americans sense. The reason Romney sounded utterly unfamiliar with free-market arguments is because he's never had any contact with a free market or the philosophy that underlies it. He doesn't know what the fuck capitalism (except in the Marxist-slur sense that he represents) is. He's The Problem.
Voters might still go for a guy who owns a lawnmower factory or something--if the party would tolerate his presence. Which it will not. So we'll never know.
So yeah, right, we're fucked. But from both ends. ...More than both. We're growing extra holes.

Yeah, there's that, too. Imagine the legislation that would surround "self-driving" cars.
They would all require GPS (which would be enabled 24/7).
They would be limited (via software fed by the GPS) to exactly the speedlimit of any road.
The Government would have the ability, "on an emergency basis" to forbid cars from entering certain areas, enforced by the software driving the car.
Yeah, no way self-driving cars would give the Government more control over us.

The software is there but the mechanism to do it without destroying the book is pretty expensive if you don't want to do all of it as manual labor. This is something I do as a hobby/side job.
A far simpler solution if you feel entitled to a electronic copy of a book you bought is to find a torrent for it. If it is being offered for Kindle there is little point in reproducing the labor.

Sort of the difference between single user and network applications. Except at 60 miles per hours.
People not familiar with how computers work often don't realize that in computer software/networking we expect collisions. The question is not whether or not opperations will collide, but how those collisisons will be handled.
This is not a philosophy I want brought to my car.

they won't look. That's the problem: No one wants to see what is really going on.
Slavery wasn't that bad when it was 1000 miles away and you never saw a black man. But then they started showing the old men and women with layers of whip scars on their broken bodies.
the Nazis were just another German army--hell, they gave regular press briefings!--until the photos of the camps showed up.
This is no different--people are content to ignore it and will actively avoid it. Because most people DO NOT want to confront evil.

It is a well known phenomenon that if you increase the energy of a system, some parts will get colder. Like if you turn on your oven, a small corner will freeze over even though the rest of the system gets hotter.
Thus, record cold temperatures are evidence of global warming.

Breaking News: The state Department of Health and Human Services on Thursday almost doubled the estimated Medicaid shortfall because of a forecasting error discovered in 2012. The error overestimated the amount of federal money North Carolina would receive. This year's revised shortfall is now $248 million.
Hmmm, I wonder what's going to happen?

How many roads most a man walk down

As a healthcare provider, my medicaid patients piss me off.
They have been taught by their social worker that their medicaid is a right they are entitled to. That it's just another form of insurance "just like any other insurance". They have no idea that other people have to make sacrifices for them to receive "their rights", nor that medicaid fails to cover my cost of providing those services. I am both taxed to provide their medicaid, then lose money when they receive it.
On 2 different occasions during my career, the state medicaid administration has hit a budget crisis and been forced to "lower their fee schedule" retroactively. IE: they arbitrarily lowered what they'd pay for services I've already rendered. To the tune of 10's of thousands of dollars in outstanding accounts receivables.
I gain no solace in knowing they "are more financially secure" or that "they have increased healthcare utilization" or even "better access to healthcare". Personally, I'd rather share some of my depression with them.

Why, oh why do these outfits set up shop in California? Even if there's only a slim chance that whatever product that is being made will catch on, avoiding this state gives an outfit a fighting chance by not having to deal with the government-added bullshit that comes with having a significant presence here.
