7 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, May 24, 2013.  On this day in 1889 W.T. McCullough of Boston, Mass., opened the first public garage. One could rent space for selling, storing and repairing vehicles.

Hell, she is still getting paid.  If she resigns she will lose that.  She should be in jail.

And now that IÂ’ve got that little bit of bile out of the way. . .

Hello, fellow Morons.  Since IÂ’m going to take Monday off, here are three stories to tide you over.  They donÂ’t really have any connection to each other; theyÂ’re simply ones I have that make nice filler.

The head of MGMÂ’s publicity department was a man named Howard Dietz.  It was his custom to pay $250 to any studio press agent who came up with a usable marketing slogan.  When Clark Gable and Greer Garson completed Adventure in 1945, a publicist in the Culver City office, Emily Torchia coined the tagline, “GableÂ’s Back and GarsonÂ’s Got Him!”  She collected her money, though after the picture bombed, a Metro wag suggested a better slogan would have been “Gable Puts the Arson in Garson.”

A few years went by, and Torchia found herself assigned to the legendary Ethel Barrymore on a picture called The Great Sinner.  “IÂ’m glad weÂ’re working together, Emily,” Barrymore told her one day.  “YouÂ’ve never done anything cheap in your advertising.  I shall never forget the time I was doing a play in New York and there blazing on a marquee was this awful, vulgar thing, ‘GableÂ’s Back and GarsonÂ’s Got Him!Â’  IsnÂ’t that horrid?”

Emily swallowed hard, but managed to squeak, “Dreadful, Miss Barrymore.  Just dreadful.”

HereÂ’s another story, this time about Dr. Harry Watson Martin, the husband of gossip columnist Louella Parsons.  He specialized in venereal disease and was head of Twentieth Century-FoxÂ’s medica department.  Through his office, Parsons had a private line to testing laboratories, especially the ones testing for pregnancy.  As a result, Parsons often knew an actress was pregnant before the actress herself did.

Both Parsons and Martin were very heavy drinkers, and neither one was shy about tossing back the hooch.  One night at a party, Martin was so drunk that he fell down on the floor, lying there in a stupor while the festivities went on around him.  When afellow guest tried to pick him up, Parsons slurred, “Leave Docky alone.  He has to operate in the morning.”

And finally – IÂ’ve told you before about the wonderful Hollywood Canteen, where stars were expected to work periodically, serving coffee and donuts to soldiers and sailors passing through LA.  One night a sailor was jitterbugging to “Cow Cow Boogie” when he got a good look at his elegant partner.  “Say, you look just like Joan Crawford,” he marveled.  “Whatever happened to her?”

The glamorous woman smiled.  “I am Joan Crawford.”

Without missing a beat, the sailor twirled her around.  “Yeah?  Whatever happened to ya?”

Hope you all have a wonderful Memorial Day.  Stay safe and happy, dear friends.

43 I suspected as much (GOP knew about Tea Party suppression). They GOP party machine has done dirty tricks to Tea Party at state & local levels here in OH, SC, AK and likely many other states, as well. This leads me to believe that, instead of using these scandals to take down this tyrannical admin, they will do as little as possible. They do not represent us. They gave tacit support to the harassment of people who wish to limit the power of the fed gov't and expose corruption. We are truly effed.

And if history is any indicator with this bunch of Chicago thugs it was more than just an attempt to intimidate.  Holder's gang cast a very wide net in their "investigation' (James Rosen's parents? Really?) and I'm certain that they were looking for any kind of embarrassing material that could be used for blackmail purposes (see: Patreaus- former DCI).

Let that sink in for a minute- this administration had no qualms with using the Federal Bureau of Investigation to dig up dirt that they could use against their supposed "enemies".

TFG's political security and the national security are two separate, and (increasingly) mutually exclusive propositions, and yet he doesn't even think twice about using the national security apparatus to secure his political position.

This is not the country I grew up in.

True, but with all the scandals breaking he really needs the money right now- those TV ads and 'Bama-Pho's and don't come cheap and he needs a lot mor of them to pump up his positive ratings.  He can make a "case" (a bullshit case, but one that will fly in a friendly media) for raiding the defense budget to do it and whereas in the past he would have had to deal with Panetta (who at least had a prehensile spine) he now has only to deal with SecDef "Mr. Potato Head" Hagel who will fold like a cheap suitcase.

75 inneresting fact about Arlington National Cemetery. Gen Meigs more or less bought Arlington at a tax sale to ensure the General Lee's family, who had owned it, would never be able to it again The government acquired Arlington at a tax sale in 1864 for $26,800, equal to $393,390 today.[17] Mrs. Lee had not appeared in person but rather had sent an agent, attempting to pay the $92.07 in property taxes (equal to $1,351.47 today) assessed on the estate in a timely manner.[18] The government turned away her agent, refusing to accept the tendered payment. In 1874, Custis Lee, heir under his grandfather's will passing the estate in trust to his mother, sued the United States claiming ownership of Arlington. After the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in Lee's favor in United States v. Lee, deciding that Arlington had been confiscated without due process,[18] Congress returned the estate to him. The next year, Custis Lee sold it back to the government for $150,000 (equal to $3,135,909 today) at a signing ceremony with Secretary of War Robert Todd Lincoln.[17]

An enormous Star Wars X-Wing spaceship has landed in New York's Times Square. X-Wing is a 42x the size of LEGO Star Wars set #9493

It took 32 master builders more than five million LEGO bricks and 17,000 hours to put together the full-scale replica of the Star Wars fighter.

The Lego X-Wing is the largest Lego model in history. It's as big as the real thing and would be capable of fitting the real Luke Skywalker inside.

82 A smart GOP that wanted to kill this immigration bill and make democrats look like shit would hold up illegal immigrant kills like the one mentioned up thread and say "we can't let these people be granted citizenship." and then make the democrats and Rubio look like felon enablers when they veto the amendment to exclude those people from the law. And then even if they approve the amendment say "well why should any felon be legalized? Or anyone with a DUI? And then force them to draw the line." then you could characterize the bill as one that allowed illegal immigrants with dui's in the country, and it would have the added benefit of being FUCKING TRUE. But whatever I'm the idiot following the laws like a moron.

They are actually fighting that in the House. That is one of the hangups in the bill from the Senate.  Conservative Republicans (or so they say) want to make sure that illegals who commit crimes (other than being illegal) have no pathway to citizenship.

note: Real conservatives will not support any amnesty bill.

These con artists do things like claim that the "Establishment GOP" didn't try to raise hell about the IRS before the election. These con artists will also claim that "Establishment GOP groups" weren't targeted by the IRS. These con artists are despicable liars who like to make a buck off of rubes who don't know the following facts:

(1) "Establishment GOP" representatives were protesting IRS targeting as far back as 2011.

(2) "Establishment GOP groups" like Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS were targeted by the IRS.

Oh, but the "Establishment GOP" didn't protest *enough,* say the con artists. How much was enough? Apparently not hundreds of letters, congressional hearings (much like Rep. Issa's current hearings), media interviews.

Posted by: comatus at May 24, 2013 08:02 AM (JNUY4)

No, it is due to the difference in the way it is made.  Drinking alcohol is made by fermentation and distillation of grains.

In 1994, 1.5 million tonnes of isopropyl alcohol were produced in the United States, Europe, and Japan. This compound is primarily produced by combining water and propene in a hydration reaction. It is also produced by hydrogenating acetone.

How about sacking up and refusing to pass any bill, refuse to engage in any congressional business, blocking every Democrat bill and resolution until the targeting is given top priority, Gabe?

If Bush's IRS was targeting the left, you can bet your ass the Dems would have congress at a standstill, with round-the-clock protests.  Is it too much to ask the "Establishment GOP" to stop acting like a battered wife and stand up for their own constituents?  Or is that precious "comity" sacred above all else?

California health exchange reveals premium costs, insurers

In the four-county Sacramento region, for example, premiums for basic coverage – a silver plan – would cost as little as $56 per month for someone with annual income of $17,235. That same policy would soar to $332 per month for an individual earning $45,960 per year. Federal subsidies would bridge the gap.

Five tiers of policies will be sold in the individual market by Covered California: bronze, silver, gold, platinum and catastrophic coverage. The lowest premiums are for policies with the highest out-of-pocket costs for care – and vice versa.

Monthly premiums will fall significantly next year for individuals of low or moderate income who qualify for subsidies. Rates are likely to rise for many higher-wage earners

168 #135 sven,  I know you won't like to hear this,  but Gabe is right about the GOP in Congress going after the IRS in the year before the election.  They sent numerous letters about these onerous questions to the IRS on behalf of their constituents,  called IRS officials to testify (which is why they are now pointing out that they were lied to about these things by Shuman, Lerner,  and others).

The media ignored it.  Even the conservative media didn't cover it that much, although I do remember the Romney donor going on TV and complaining about it, but it was pretty close to the election.

Mark Levin has a habit of flying off the handle and I myself have been one of his targets when I posted on Free Republic.  He does not like to admit he is wrong and although he does very good work with Landmark Legal,  he also is interested in pushing his point of view and doesn't always check his facts.

We have a cottage industry of authors,  radio talk show hosts,  pundits, and general "experts" who make their money by pitting one part of the GOP against the other.  I don't know why things have ended up this way,  but it isn't really helpful.

I am more interested in winning a majority in the Senate and keeping the one in the  House.  Yes,  there are some people who should probably be primaried for their records,  but a wholesale indictment of all non-Tea Party GOP is helpful to no one but the democrats.

There was no solid evidence of targeting. When they investigated, people *under oath* said there was no targeting. And you think the GOP could successfully -- i.e. not been KILLED at the polls -- have put a choke on *everything* when the Democrats could simply point to the folks swearing that no targeting took place?

212 Those of you who want to excuse Flake and the usual RINO suspects on amnesty: Contained in this legislation will be the inevitable GRANTS for legal representation for applicants, GRANTS for housing construction for applicants, GRANTS for carbon tax remissions in the applicants home country to make up for them not paying taxes there, GRANTS for colleges and universities to set up vocational training for applicants, GRANTS for K-12 systems to accommodate children of applicants in bilingual and special needs education, etc. etc. I'm not even going to discuss the H1B stupidity. Keep going with whatever rationalization you are using to delineate those who know that we cannot continue with a rapacious, ever-expanding federal government from those who are intentionally lying about damned near everything. We need a third party and we need it immediately.

Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at May 24, 2013 04:32 AM (659DL)

213 #178  The amnesty thing is not the IRS thing.  I do not understand how you can conflate the two.

Issa needs to keep investigating.  He is building a case that Obama has used various branches of the government,  particularly the IRS, to intimidate and harass political opponents.  Interestingly,  these opponents include conservative Hispanic groups.

When we get to the part where the True theVote lady was harassed by multiple agencies,  a whole new front will be opened.  Since I remember Watergate,  I expect that all of these hearings are going to take well over a year at the minimum.  Much as I wish I had special powers to make this happen instantaneously,  it isn't going to happen.

Now, as far as amnesty, all I can tell you is that the Republican congressmen in Indiana oppose it.   They want the border fixed before anything else is done.   I imagine that is true of most House GOP members.  So that is where this stupid Gang of 8 bill is heading when it gets to the House.

Go sit in your bass boat and think about what I have said,  and have a nice holiday weekend.

Since I do not like to be a patsy,  I have told them to quit calling me.  I will donate on-line if I ever feel so inclined.  Right now I cannot stand to look at Reince Priebus mug on the TV,  and I am PO'd at Romney,  who was a complete sucker to his grifter campaign people  and not at all what was advertised in the primaries.

I am not without bitterness,  because to many in Washington this is a career or a game,  but to us out here it is our LIVES.   HOwEVER,  I am not going to throw in the towel.  I do not believe that we are well served by talking of secession or anarchy,  which sadly may appear in pockets of this country without any help from me.   I love this country,  I have grandchildren for which I want a future,  and I ultimately believe,  like Brbara Olson,  that good will triumph over evil.

Here's the thing - if GOP leaders received hundreds of letters about IRS abuse, if this was a "thing" a year ago...why is it a) we're only hearing about it now and b) is there any attention being paid to it?  Were there hearings on it before now and they just weren't reported on?

6 years ago I would have thought that anyone alleging scandal dumps to provide media cover for an unpopular bill would have been four loco.  However, back then I would have thought anyone saying a sitting President ran guns to Mexico, sicced the DOJ on a reporter's parents, harassed and delayed 501 (c)(3) and 501 (c)(4) applications from conservative groups, and stood US forces down while a diplomat was under attach was also a little crazy.

To me, that reads as "what's the point of investigating, when the left will lie under oath and then, when we investigate, derail the investigation by pointing out that under oath testimony has already been given and this is a partisan witch hunt and the squishes on our side will press to end the investigationin order to stay buddies with their 'friends across the aisle'?"

Fabulous. Out of the shadows and into the federal government. There are some openings at the IRS for ObamaCare enforcement, right?

Now,  I am not saying I am supporting all GOP lockstep.  Do not be like Obama and putting out those straw men.

Are there GOP people I want primaried?  Sure.  However,  it is up to the voters of those various districts and states whether people like Boehner or McCain get primaried,  and it is up to the House and the Senators to pick their leadership.   In those areas I don't have a voice at all,  except to speak to MY representative and Senator and to send donations out of state.

My donations will no longer go to the RNC due to the last fiasco,  nor to any of those groups put together to pool funds for GOP candidates.  I will donate individually.

I need to get going.  I am running behind and I have a package I need to ship.

Have a good weekend!

357 The mention of Canadian reminds me. Has everyone with Netflix watched the TV series Trailer Park Boys? It's not for everybody, but I think it's absolutely hilarious. Much swearing, drinking, pot smoking, deviance etc.

>>>Hey Gabe, if you are still here, you happy with the BSA vote? I think it was a good compromise. Kids need Scouts, regardless of what they think they are at 12.

I'm surprised by it. I wrote yesterday, fully expecting them to vote it down (based on those apparently wrong polls), that I respect the BSA's right to exclude even as I hope they choose not to. So, yes, I'm happy. BSA is an undeniable force for good in the lives of thousands -- hundreds of thousands, really -- of boys.

I also expect that this is just one step in BSA's process of acceptance. The boys growing up today with gay scout friends will, in 15 years or so, no doubt vote away the policy that excludes their gay scout friends from leadership.

360 353 Baldilocks,

No it's my fault.

At my best I am a readable poster...probably only at my best.

I'm not at my best.

I need to go get my car, I want all of you to have a safe, happy, and great weekend.

I will or won't....

I'm sorry.

361 Just end every setence with eh? Eh? Posted by: rickb223 at May 24, 2013 09:10 AM (lwkv9) You know, eh, I think, you know, you got that right, eh? Most of my client base is Canadian. Throw in some "right on"'s before the "eh" now and then for real authenticity. As in "right on, eh?" Yes, they still say right on, I know, right? Say "bloody" a lot too for the correct faux-Brit approach. And it's not "Canadian bacon" to them, it's "back bacon." And don't forget, the "a" in words like "pasta" and "Mazda" are pronounced with a very nasal sound, like the way we pronounce the "a" in "afternoon" but more nasal. Canadian lesson over, eh?

365 Okay now I'm insulted. WTF do you think I was talking about? #265!  Seriously, I didn't see anything insulting there. Wagging tail? Please. A perfect euphemism for optimism. What are we, babies now?  Posted by: baldilocks at May 24, 2013 09:11 AM (Su0W2)

I thought you were talking about 273 not 265.  And some women take exception to being too closely associated with the female of the canine species.  So the "wag your tail" line might have had an impact.

Frankly, I have no dog (SWIDT?) in this fight and a fuck I do not give.  I was simply trying to point out something you might have missed.  You didn't miss it.  Wonderful.  Hooray.  Now....moving on.

366 @368 I got to vote and we were mostly impressed with how the Scouts themselves really did not give a shit what the kid called himself. They did bring up the problem of exclusion. Who was going to sleep with the guy in a tent, but other than that the kids convinced the adults that this was the right thing to do.

I am A-OK now with Dems being happy with us splitting votes and all that in order to establish an alternative to the GOP as it is now constituted. Do not care one whit. As it stands, as proven IMHO last election, the GOP is a fkn joke. The brand name is dogshit and cannot be repaired. Admit finally that the Dems have done their brainwashing job well and throw in the towel. It is not half-time but the end-game and we lost. Bring up the next team.

370 Something doesn't add up with the TGIF story. Yes, isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol is poisonous but it is also denatured, meaning chemicals have been added to make it taste like shit. And those chemicals are almost impossible to remove. So any drink made with it would taste so bad it would be undrinkable. Related -- during the Prohibition bootleggers would often cut their booze with isopropyl alcohol, the aim being to cut it enough to raise profits but keep the average drinker from ingesting a fatal dose. Same thing with methanol. IIRC, denaturing alcohol was a direct result of prohibition. They used it on the good stuff (ethanol) so it could still be used industrially but not imbibed. The worst adulterant during Prohibition, however, was perhaps ether. It will get you zonked if you ingest it, however, the line between how much ether gives you a buzz and the LD/50 is a very fine one. Lots of people died because of the benevolence of our government.

383 The bridge collapse in WA state will now mean that the pro CRC group will get a big boost. The plan for the bridge replacement across the Columbia river is too low and the Corps of Engineers rejected it. But the big story is the attempt to force light rail on the City of Vancouver, despite the citizens there voting down light rail twice. They will get stuck with the bill for it anyway.

388 Gave, the GOP could have done a lot more to use the IRS issue in 2012. They could have hammered the Democrats with it by comparing the testimony with the facts that applications were delayed or denied. You say the testimony prevented a strong GOP attack. Actually, it would have been their main weapon.
