Good Morning Morons. Today is Tuesday, May 28, 2013. On this day in 1929 the first color motion picture debuted.

Isn't the erudite use of both the word "fabulous" and "peasant" in a really long sentence one of the new events?

Too late. At least baseball is a sport with an objective scoring system practiced in more than one nation. I'm not so sure about softball, though.

Because you know, once he goes to visit a disaster area we reporters can't ask him any hard questions, even though we know he is dodging them. Our hands are tied. (Oh, the questions we shouted at George Bush when he visited New Orleans? Those were some other reporters or something.)

There are ways to run secure networks, but they are a pain to maintain and secure. The low bidder skimps on the network cost et voila!.

Hello, 'rons and 'ronettes. I hope you all had a great weekend.
About a week or so ago, I told you a story about Chaplin and the silent film director Raoul Walsh. Well, here's a tale with Walsh again; this time, he's at Chasen's restaurant* (a top Hollywood hangout), crossing the floor to speak with Billy Grady, who was one of the talent representatives at MGM.**
"Hi, Irish," Walsh began. "I met a young man the other day who's trying to make the grade in pictures. He's a good-looking kid, has no experience beyond extra work. I don't know if he has any talent, but do me a favor, will you? Talk with him."
Grady agreed. A few minutes later, Walsh's wife came in with the young man in tow. Walsh introduced him as "Fitzgerald," leaving him to talk to the agent.
“The boy was personable and physically well set up,” Grady remembered. “He told me he had been trying to get a start in pictures for several years with little success:
"Mr. Grady, I've been trying, but get nowhere."
"Fitzgerald," Grady said, "as of ten o'clock tomorrow morning, you are under contract to MGM."
The young actor looked at him in disbelief. "Please don't kid me, Mr. Grady. Is this a gag between you and Mr. Walsh?"
The agent shook his head. "Look, son, not tomorrow morning, but tonight - right now - you are under contract to MGM at $300 a week."
Fitzgerald grabbed Grady's hand and shook it until it nearly fell off, babbling a stream of "thank yous" before going back to have dinner with the Walshes. At ten on the dot the next morning, he presented himself at Grady's office, where the agent told his staff that he was under contract and to begin looking for any little parts to get him on his way. The terms were industry standard, beginning at $300 weekly, with yearly options graduating to $2000 weekly over a period of seven years.
"There is just one more thing," Grady added. "I'd like you to meet Mr. L.B. Mayer."
"Mr. Mayer, the head of MGM?" Fitzgerald gasped. "My God, the things that are happening to me today!"
Grady brought the young actor to the studio barber shop, where Mayer was standing at the newsstand. "Glad to have you aboard, Fitz," Mayer said. "If you're in the hands of the Irishman, you're in good hands. Good luck to you."
And now, the rest of the story. . .in his 1972 memoir, The Irish Peacock, Grady repeats the tale, with an all-too-familiar Hollywood twist: "I have never seen Fitzgerald from that day to this, other than fleeting glimpses of him in fast European circles. I have never spoken to him.
"Today Fitzgerald's name is Rock Hudson."
Another loaf of ungrateful bread, as the head Ewok would say.
That's it for me. Hope you all have a wonderful day.
*ChasenÂ’s was in West Hollywood at 9039 Beverly Boulevard near Beverly Hills. For many years, it was the site of the Academy Awards; it was also known for its chili. In 1962 Elizabeth Taylor had several orders of ChasenÂ’s chili flown to the set of Cleopatra.
**Jimmy Stewart and Joan Blondell were among his discoveries.

So how many casualties and arrests from the ONT? Was there enough bail cash to go around?
As a point of clarification, the infamous Memorial Day ONT began the day before the holiday. The thread continued till noon and was well over 1,000 posts 'cause no one wanted it to end (as well as stinking drunk). Took forever to load.

Which is why I found it damned near impossible to "celebrate" Memorial Day. Some gave all. . .for what? A country that twice gave the highest office to a Marxist rabble-rouser, where the government is corrupt from top to bottom, where years of hard work can be eliminated or even confiscated on an unelected bureaucrat's whim and where nearly 52% are not only happy with that, but insist the government silence me and tell me to my face that I don't deserve any freedoms? What is there to celebrate?
The Republic is dead. If we must celebrate Memorial Day, then let us remember the America that was. This country is a dead man walking; it just hasn't collapsed yet.

I think sometimes that reading the news, which is mostly interested in pushing the leftist agenda, makes us think that the country has completely collapsed.
Are there stupid and selfish people? Of course. But there are still plenty of the regular old Americans who work hard and think the old way.
Of course, I am an optimist and this might not serve your morning mood.

Yeah, Obama gives speeches against straw men. But it *is* what you eavesdrop at Bob Evans, or standing in line at the grocery store, or observe driving around town. The "selfish and stupid" outnumber "regular old Americans", and by greater percentages as age decreases.
IndyStar estimates 200 people attended the 145th annual ceremony to commemorate (not "celebrate") Memorial Day, with the governor and National Guard. Out of a metro area of over a million (I admit this is the first time I've gone, and it was weird because I'm not from around here and all my family who have served in wartime returned. )

I gotta work--I worked all weekend, no cookout, went from the cemetery to work--but I'd love to have a Horde discussion on the inclusion of Elvis in a selection of "patriotic music." I think I can argue both sides, but I want to hear what other people thing.

I don't watch The Five on FoxNews mainly because of my schedule. I usually catch the last few seconds of it on the repeat of the show at 0200 (it comes on before Red Eye). Andrea Tantaros is an attractive young lady that has the best figure in TV News. I should probably watch The Five but I would destroy my TV every time Beckel opens his fat mouth.

We would now have to have some sort of attack like the planned one portrayed in Act of Valor to move the window back any. The "American Trilogy" bit? No, because that way, IMO, lies recorded tracks. If we're going to play Elvis, then why not Hendrix's version of The Star-Spangled Banner? Or Ray Charles singing America? Not that I have anything against those three pieces, but patriotic music should be that which celebrates the country and makes you think about what you have been given - for a start, let's get rid of that imbecilic rewite of The Battle Hymn of the Republic - "as He died to make men holy, let us live to make men free." Let's sing Columbia, the Gem of the Ocean.
But YMMV.

I don't care that you have misspellings, I just wanted to know for my own curiosity if the autocorrect feature on a phone that has one can be turned off.
Is that so hard a question? Not correcting someone's spelling or being an "old school marm".
It's a question about the tech in the phone.

OK, SFB, not everyone is a genius like you are. Sometimes, they don't always check every single syllable to make sure it is 100% accurate like you do. Sometimes, they like the convenience of auto-correct because it saves a few keystrokes by allowing you to fill in the word without typing all of it. Yes, sometimes it is wrong. On the whole, it is nice convenience. There is absolutely, positively no reason to treat people who use it as if they are some kind of idiots. It is far better to mock them unmercifully when auto-correct fails them.

Ace really does resent the commenters though.
Rather foolish for the proprietor of an Award-Winning Blog.
I think Ace is like all of us; the hackles go up when we're challenged. See Ace on any religion thread, for example. This place shakes people out of their comfrt zones, which is always a good thing. If only we could get Award-Winning Trolls, we'd be cooking with gas.

Thanks for the follow up. Looks like we're going to be chartered by the Methodists. The Boy Scout troop to which most of our boys bridge from Cub Scouts is chartered by a local Methodist church, and they would like to charter the Pack as well.
On the pro side, some of the old guard of the Pack (before the PC police moved in) are church elders, so we would have that going for us. On the other hand, some of the current PC crop will be sticking around for the next year. Still, we'll be away from the PTA so I consider this a good development. My proposal to do what you and I discussed was voted down (barely, by two votes) mainly because that church was "too far away" for a significant chunk of the parents.

I don't think Ace "resents" the commenters. I think he resents when he perceives one of the CoBloggers being personally attacked.
About as far as I'll go on that score is when I think a CoBlogger brings too much dismissive snark to a commenter, but then it's Ace's blog and not mine so he gets to make the call.

^^^This.
When you lack the ability to critically examine your own opinions in light of new evidence, and instead cling to your own opinion as if it were The One True Thing™ then you're not really doing anyone any favors. Including yourself.
First hubris. Then Nemesis. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.
I've had my head handed to me here. Sometimes it made me change how I see an issue. Sometimes it made me strengthen my argument. But I don't discount criticism without at least looking at it. Many folks here do (see Brigade, Purity).

Heard this idea on the radio:
Congress is only about one thing: being reelected. If they think being hard on the IRS will get them reeelected, they'll do it. If they think being anti-amnesty will get them reelected, they'll do it. They don't care about anything else.
So how to solve this? Term limits? Nah. The idea was to make the pay scale of our elected officials the same as the mean salary of their constituents. Then maybe they'll feel our pain.

The casting call to portray Hillary Rodham Clinton in a new biopic about her life is looking pretty ferocious (and attractive). Reese Witherspoon, Scarlett Johansson, Amanda Seyfried and Jessica Chastain are among the actresses vying to play the Secretary of State in “Rodham,” a new film which will focus on the early years of Clinton’s marriage and her time as a 20-something lawyer in Washington, D.C..

As a former artilleryman, I can state that there is something seriously wrong with you if firing a howitzer doesn't give you a major thrill. MLRS is cool unless you are asleep about 200 meters from a battery that fires all their launchers in a 12-pack FFE, especially in a combat zone.
In the Gulf War, the Brits had planned to fire the minimum number of MLRS rounds that their computers said would defeat the target. They realized that it was easier to just fire a six-pack and reload than to keep track of the number of rounds in each side of the launcher.
On a side note, the MLRS battalion in our brigade was conducting the Army's test for what became TACMS when we were alerted to deploy for then Desert Shield. Since it was a dual-capable launcher, they decided to just leave them the way they were configured and send them. They shot many, many TACMS missions. It was really cool to watch the launch. To avoid counter-fire, the launcher would skew a random amount from the desired azimuth then launch. You could watch the missile fly off in the wrong direction then change course to a random course. At the last minute, the missile corrected course again into the target. This was designed to prevent the enemy from using the trajectory to determine the launchers position.

Seriously, is there something in the Koran that functions like an evil magic spell, in which people who seem moderate and otherwise normal go insane? I can understand the suicide bombers in Gaza who are brainwashed from birth, but what about these people who are converts and only have had a few years of instruction?
It is really creepy and borders on possession or something else that is supernatural in appearance. I really wish we had someone actually studying this, instead of acting like this is some sort of normal aberration.

My point is that Muslims are Muslims and crocodiles are crocodiles. You cannot civilize a crocodile. You can wall him off, avoid him, or kill him, but you aren't going to change him. The leftards are in positions of power in every system we have, and effectively work to enable the Muslims as they are working for a common cause in the general sense. Once the destruction of the West is complete, the leftards will confront Islam, and not before. They use the Muslims as a tool against Western Culture, and therefore are the root problem. Muslims are only a tool to their ultimate end.

I find converts can often be more 'devout' than those immersed since birth.
Kind of like holier than thou ex-smokers.

When I was a battery commander at Ft. Sill, several of us went out to watch a demonstration shoot that they did for the Officer Basic Course at Signal Mountain. They were showing off one of the very first models of what became the Paladin. We watched it drive down a road, stop, traverse the turret, and fire. At that point, we all looked at each other because we knew they had shot out. None of the lieutenants knew it because they weren't familiar enough with the Ft. Sill impact area. Fortunately, the round landed int he buffer zone. Another time, a unit shot out and it landed between McKenzie Hill road and the southern fence.

"Wow: 2/3rds of Brits polled think a clash of civilizations with Islam is inevitable."
"But they have the same problem we have in the USA, our leaders are marching us off the cliff.
Those who do not learn from history are destined to annoy the ever-living shit out of me."
Here, there, and everywhere in the West we are going to allow the problem to approach cataclysmic proportions before doing anything meaningful about it. Even then, it may just be "easier" for most people to just drift off into oblivion rather than get involved. This covers all of the problems - Islam, leftists, the FSA, entrenched bureaucrats, statist barnacles in Congress, and freedom-squelching big government types of all parties.
The only hopeful thought I have on the situation is knowing it only takes a small percentage of the population to finally get fed up, get off their asses, and commit to the risk. That attracts additional "soft" support, but I would never put the number of people in this boat above 30%. As it was at the time of the American Revolution, it is now.

I disagree.
Muslims have been savages for their entire existence. Blaming them for doing what they do is akin to the fools who ascribe human characteristics to animals.
I blame their enablers for the current situation in the West.

"What is it that makes Muslims go homicidal? Seriously, this is something which needs to be looked at."
To paraphease Cankles: "What difference does it make?" So we take the time to study and understand them, Great. What now?
The most effective solution will end up being the same as it is when you couldn't understand them at all: Metal on meat.

As near as I can tell it is the people drawn to the belief system as well as the belief system itself. The people are, to put it bluntly, losers and they are drawn to the belief system since it promises to empower them and make them winners by killing other people.
There is also a really disgusting, and genuinely Evil, psycho-sexual component to the whole thing.

"I'm looking for smaller government, lower taxes and real national security. I am not, however, interested in trying to tell other people how to lead their lives or judging them for doing whatever makes them happy (within reason), nor do I want to receive that hectoring from others. -"
This workes swimmingly well up to the point where you run into people whose secular religion is exactly "telling other people how to lead their lives" at the taxpayer funded point of the police's guns. At that point, you have to be able to tell them their beliefs are wrong, evil, and an eventual path to much unpleasantness.

I watched some footage of OK tornado about an hour after the dust settled. They already had portable lighting equipment set up. Generators. Responders. Dogs. They were prepared.
I didn't see one person carrying a case of Michelob away from the scene.
I could be a prick and suggest melanin content and party registration may have been contributing factors.
