Happy Wednesday.

Forgive me if this has been linked before, I've been out of town. David Freddoso has an interesting column on Speaker Boehner's leadership style, as contrasted with the DeLay-Pelosi strong-arm speakerships.

Rep. Bachmann has an eight-minute video announcing that she won't run for reelection next year. It's somethin'.

WSJ is still asking about the IRS targeting of groups that support Israel, something that has seemed to get lost in the scandal.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  ItÂ’s a rainy morning here in MA; I hope itÂ’s sunny and warm where you are.  While we wait for Vic, why not grab a cup of joe and settle back for a moment. . .

Before John Wayne, the biggest Western star was the grim-faced man of few words William S. Hart, a silent actor whose pictures – The Man From Nowhere, The Silent Man, The Testing Block and many others – are credited with establishing the character of the “good bad man,” the Western antihero who is redeemed by a noble cause or a good woman.  Hart was a stickler for realism (or as much as could be had within the confines of a movie), and hereÂ’s a story about one time things got a little too real:

During the shooting one of his movies, Hart had arranged for a scene with a knockdown brawl in a restaurant.  It would culminate with Hart knocking out an extra and a professional boxer had been hired for the scene.

Before the cameras rolled, Hart took the extra aside.  “Partner,” he told the big bruiser, “of course, you know your business, but since weÂ’ve never fought before, I want to explain how we try and work it.”  He then went on to tell the extra to pull his punches as much as he could – and Hart would do the same – but make it look like a real fight as much as possible.

“One last thing, brother,” Hart finished.  “When I judge weÂ’ve got enough for the scene, IÂ’ll swing and land on you.  IÂ’ll pull the punch as much as I can, and as I do, IÂ’ll yell ‘Go,Â’ and you go down just like you would in a real fight.”

Through all of this, the extra hadnÂ’t asked for an explanation or for cues; in fact, he hadnÂ’t said anything at all.  Figuring he was just taciturn, Hart patted him on the shoulder.  “Remember, IÂ’ll holler ‘Go,” and you hit the floor.”

“Roll camera!” the director shouted, and the fight began.  Hart quickly found the extra was taking the fight much more seriously than he wanted him to, but as the two traded crushing blows, the actor comforted himself with the thought that at least it would be a realistic scene.  Finally, he decided they had enough footage in the can; he lunged at the extra and yelled “Go!”

To his astonishment, the man kept on fighting, charging Hart like a wounded bear.  “Go!” Hart yelled again.  “GO!”  But it didnÂ’t work – Hart took a massive right to the jaw and was nearly knocked cold.  Infuriated, he leaped on the extra, delivering a storm of punches, kicks and gouges that finally brought the man down.

Hart was still pounding the manÂ’s face as the crew pulled the two apart.  Straining against the men holding him, Hart began yelling at the extra for ignoring his instructions.  “Wait a minute, Mr. Hart,” said the man who had hired the extra, pushing his way through the crowd.  “YouÂ’re all wrong.”

Then he explained.  “We forgot to tell you this man is stone deaf.  ItÂ’s not his fault.”

An abashed Hart took the extra to the hospital and paid the bill.  But he never saw the man again.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Lawyers leading the fight for gay marriage in California have been quietly preparing state officials for the possibility the U.S. Supreme Court might dismiss the case on a technicality next month without deciding the fate of Proposition 8.

The justices could decide that the sponsors of the ballot measure outlawing same-sex marriage had no legal right, or standing, to defend it in federal court. That would end the case in Washington, but it is not clear what it would mean for California.

http://tinyurl.com/q5gaepw

That would leave the breadth of the effects of the initial case to be fought over within California, but would kill any nationwide legalization from this case.

Wonder if all the "growth" you've been seeing over the last few months among politicians, Portman and so on, is because the powers that be got a heads up on the ruling and are laying the groundwork for a new round of state and federal attempts to legislate gay marriage into existence.

You need to look again at why our party is losing. It's not the message, it's the messengers... Not really. The left started a long march through the institutions of power decades ago and this is the result. The left owns the bureaucracy, they own the msm, they own the universities and much of the public school system. The unions have lost a lot of their power but they still represent a much more unified power base than anything on the right and they are wholly owned by the left. The average voter is not very engaged in politics and listens to the voices they have always listened to, been trained to listen to. The voices tell them that Michelle Bachmann is a loon but Joe Biden is a super genius and they lap it up. They are told that Obama is a light worker despite his atrocious record and Romney is an evil woman hating monster despite his amazing record and they eat that up too. Conservatives can do well in local elections in conservative districts. They don't do well in national elections. They are up against a stacked deck on the national level. Politicians on the left are no more gifted than they guys we put up. They just have a much more organized and effective machine.

I'd gladly keep her quirks around than suffer the likes of Boehner's idiosyncrasies (Yes, Obama. Whatever I can do for you, Obama. Whatever you say, Obama.). Would Bachmann want to stay were she to be elected House Speaker, replacing Boner? Instead, on to Switzerland with dual citizenship tax benefits? Her application after losing the GOP '12 bid for POTUS was definitely unusual, just for the timing. Being the tax lawyer in the know, it would be the norm to seek for anyone with the opportunity.

I was thinking about that story this morning.  Had that been my kid, I would have walked him into the principal's office.

"What did he do?"  "He brought a gun on the bus."  "Really?  Where is it?"  "Right here."  "OK, shoot off a round."  "What?"  You said it's a gun.  So shoot it."  "It's a toy gun."  "Oh, so he really didn't bring a gun on the bus."  "Yes, he did."  "No, we've established it's a toy.  It's not real.  You admit that, right?"  "Yes, but -"  "So if he brought a toy hammer on the bus, would you have given him detention?"

And just keep going.  Jam the idiocy right back into that propagandizing fuck's face.  And do a press conference right outside the school.  Name the assholes and shame them.  Point out that they're idiots.  Punch back twice as hard.

What "proof" did the IG have a year ago?

I'm saying back in 2010, Tea Party groups were on the receiving end of a lot of crap, they certainly knew it, and enough of them complained to the RNC to discern a pattern.  Michael Steele didn't want to deal with it, and apparently in 2012 when the pattern was more complete, Romney didn't want to do it either.

And Romney even took a pass on Fast and Furious.

Wouldn't have taken much "proof" to start publicizing the questionnaires Tea Party groups were receiving back in 2010 and start calling for more investigations.  The RNC and Romney apparently didn't want to do that - assuming they were even talking to Tea Party groups at all.

I don't think it's a "conspiracy  theory" to wonder why those Congressmen didn't make a big(ger) deal of their inquiries to the voting public.

Seems pretty simple to me, at least to someone who favors bare knuckle politics.  Show a questionnaire received by a targeted group.  Publicize the inquiry.  Point out the IRS response/lie  and juxtapose it against the questionnaire.

The mistake apparently was the GOP going  directly  to the IRS instead of making a campaign issue out of it.

Well, I'd disagree with Romney going hammer and tong on all of that, but that aside...

The IRS is pretty much universally reviled, even among the LIVs.  It is an  issue that has legs, even at this late date.

My take is that the Romney people wanted to play nice and portray Obama as a nice fella who was out of his depth, not someone who was acting maliciously.  Since the IRS actions didn't fit into that narrative, they took a pass on pursuing it.

But hey, if you don't think that any of this IRS stuff matters for 2014, we should just let it go since we tried to criticize Obamacare but still lost the Presidential election.....?

The politicians who get attacked by the "statist quo" (hat tip to the commenter who gave us that one) are the ones both "sides of the aisle" are afraid of. Their lives of living large on the backs of taxpayers might receive too much exposure.

151 What do you suppose the progressives would have done if there was this burbling about the IRS targeting say environmental groups or civil rights groups? What do you suppose would be the reaction if the donks were hearing about GOP senetors writing letters.to complain about historically black churches allowing Democrats to hold campaign rallies in their churches? One side fights, one side takes it up the ass.

Fine, how 'bout when he brought it up in the October 16 debate:

“The greatest failure we’ve had with regards to gun violence, in some respects,” Romney said, “is what is known as ‘Fast and Furious,’ which was a program under this administration. And how it worked exactly — I think we don’t know precisely — but where thousands of automatic and AK-47-type weapons were given to people that ultimately gave them to drug lords [in Mexico].”

“They used those weapons against their own citizens and killed Americans with them. And was a program of the government.”

Look, I'm not going to do your homework for you. You claimed that Romney "took a pass" on Fast and Furious. That's false. I have demonstrated it is false. You either remembered wrong or you're just making shit up to suit your prejudices.

And yet I never said that. I've been saying here since the IG report came out that this is the one scandal that can really hurt Obama. But it won't be overnight as much as we all might want it to. We have an opponent who has lied, misled and refused to turn over documents for years. It's going to take a lot of hearings and time to get the proof that will really galvanize people who only moderately pay attention to politics, i.e. the vast majority of the voting public. So no, I don't think that if Romney or the RNC had made a big deal of complaints that certain Tea Party groups, groups thanks to the msm that are about as popular as diphtheria with the general public, that they were being targeted by the IRS when applying for tax free status was going to turn the tide. In fact, I think it might have hurt because without proof it would have allowed the msm and team Obama to point out once again how crazed the Tea Party and conservatives truly are. But you may be right, look how enraged, ENRAGED, the general public is right now about the IRS scandal.

What kind of maniac?  Usually a malignant narcissist who doesn't care what people think about him just so long as people think about him as he's playing  games with their lives.  The kind of person who will pig out at the public trough and do literally anything to maintain his spot "because he's better and  he deserves it".

196 I completely fail to understand why we should celebrate a weak Speaker of the House other than the fact that Boehner doesn't have the power to get his personal RINO agenda through. And I don't completely agree with this because we've already seen him do this in some instances. Also re: pork, it's been shown repeatedly that although earmarks look bad, they don't end up being nearly as damaging as really bad legislation.

Boehner has repeatedly violated the Hassert Rule and allowed legislation to pass with votes of liberal Republicans and Democrats and against the strong objections of conservatives. This kind of thing along with trying to strong-arm conservatives and messing with committee assignments sows dissension among the House and is destructive, encouraging dissension, back-stabbing and leaks.

At a time when we could use a strong, determined voice to speak out against all the scandals, to demand accountability, to represent the Republican party in front of the TV cameras and speak to why Republican & conservative values that include a less centralized all-powerful large government would benefit the American people, we have....weakness.

204 A very possible reason why Holder is not going to resign or be fired: Oh, everyone knows Holder should be dead meat. The Obama folks simply want the GOP to attack a black man, so as to continue the paranoia in the African-American community about white racism so as to maintain support, with the understanding that overwhelming support of blacks is a force-multiplier, because so many white idealisitc types will defer to the desires of that commnity (unthinkingly), out of a well-meaning but misguided wish to build a new mankind/society. The GOP knows this at some level, and in fact may not attack (I think they will, but only because the pressure is there) which means we continue to put into place a paradigm of supporting, at the end of the day, corruption and double-standards that will eventually lead to Orwellian tyranny in a few generations or less. It is as cynical a piece of demagougic work as ever seen in America. Let us hear no more of Nixon's "Southern strategy" and "dogwhistle" appeals, because that is exactly what is going to happen, and is happening, here (and has bern, elsewhere). The dogwhistle of "they are just racists, just haters". When one day absolutely no objective of integrity, no standards, are left, but that which pleases the politically-involved Progressive, do not be surprised. And I would suggest that when that day arrives, that you do not speak up against it, because you will be defeated in detail. A conniving, low-information voter-appealing boot on the human face, forever. That is what you will have, and what you will not be able to change or challenge except at great personal cost. Enjoy it.

213 Let's review the candidates we have seen over the last few years.  Equal amounts of hatred have been expressed over Bachmann and Palin,  who as far as I can tell have not been any crazier than Newt or Rand Paul,  just on different issues.

Perry was a flop because he wasn't a silver-tongued orator and stumbled in the debates.  Can was fine until Gloria Allred showed up with her usual women as victims mode.  The fact that Cain was still married to his first wife while Newt was a thrice-married type was apparently not worthy of comment.

I could go on.  Every single person in the GOP wants THEIR candidate and if they don't get THAT candidate,  they will spend the rest of their days proving,  with geometrical logic,  that THEY ARE BY GOD RIGHT AND SHOULD HAVE BEEN LISTENED TO!

I despair.  No one sees that this constant tearing down of candidates is destructive to the party AND to conservatism.

This comment will probably elicit additional snarky comments,  but I stand by it.

230 As a clarification--the "well-meaning but misguided desire to build a new mankind/society" is misguided when it does not apply objective standards of integrity evenly across the board. You just simply take a man, and his demands, as they are, no more, no less. Do not make unchallengeable saints out of mere mortal men. Do not make an entire class into your Levites of the new brotherhood, your priests of all that is good. For, as they are but men, you will have cause to regret it.

Preach it, sister! Even in the run-up to the nomination, it's a life and death battle that never sleeps. It's really quite an unusual phenomenon to observe.

I was impressed how pretty much everyone accepted Romney once he received the nomination - eventually (either that or they disappeared off the site).  I was not a Romney person but once he was nominated and the campaign began, I really got on board and felt hopeful. I think that Obama is stupid yet clever - he knows that it doesn't matter that he is stupid, or that he lies. Regardless, I don't think Romney would have turned the corner with the IRS story. If there wasn't enough proof to make a campaign issue out of it, what proof existed that was sufficient for the IG to spend resources to begin to investigate it? Words actually matter. You previously asked if I thought that the Repub leadership didn't make a big deal of this during the election because the head of the IRS lied. That's not what I said. I said they had no proof of anything illegal, hell not even immoral or fattening. What they had was evidence that certain conservative groups were being asked to jump through ridiculous steps to get tax free status. They did not have proof of anything else. Not even proof that liberal groups weren't also being targeted for tax free status. And thats what this is about, tax free status for the most part. And whether we like it or not the Tea Party is not popular with the general public thanks to constant negative reporting by the msm. I do not think emphasizing to the average voter that a largely unpopular group was complaining that the IRS was making it difficult for them to not pay taxes was going to be a winner. That has nothing to do with removing people from office for illegal acts. Your mileage may differ.

I also seem to remember a lot of cowards wringing their hands over the Iraq War surge as well.

How much dissent do you want a sitting president to have to endure?  My personal opinion is that the irrational hatred for Harriet Meiers and the failure of people to understand that McCain's immigration plan was not the one W submitted was by far and away the cause of his falling support which lost us the House in 2006.

I notice the pundits and radio talk show hosts remain gainfully employed.  THEIR reputations seem secure,  no matter hat bird-brained candidate they support nor what issue the push.

286 136 For about the tenth fucking time, there were 132 inquiries made by congressmen of the IRS based on constituent complaints about this issue over 2 years. And IRS personnel lied to congress when directly questioned on this point on several occasions. The only reason we have confirmation about it at this point is because of an internal audit requested by Darrell Issa. But, yeah, conspiracy theories are fun, so knock yourselves out. Posted by: Andy at May 29, 2013 08:11 AM (li+aS) Except you totally missed the excellent point made posted by: @JohnTant at May 29, 2013 08:06 AM (tVWQB): Wouldn't have taken much "proof" to start publicizing the questionnaires Tea Party groups were receiving back in 2010 and start calling for more investigations. Those questionnaires were positively Nixonian. If the people had heard about that kind of IRS harassment during the election season it would've created quite a buzz. But the GOP limits itself to ladyfingers while the Dems launch their strategic nukes. And to people like you -- for some reason -- that makes perfect sense.

Because that is one of the beauties of the Obama way, to do things so audacious that you would have to be crazy to think they would do it in broad daylight and think thye could get away with it. But notice the way the narrative works: first, you are crazy to think that the IRS would do that. Second, we are outraged that this happened, we will make sure that no no-name low-level staffer can ever do such an outrageous thing again. Third, the IRS is noble and was protecting our country by going after these outrageous Tea Party groups.

304 #280  We think the 90's Congress was effective because they stopped things or forced Clinton to sign bills (3 tries on welfare reform,  if I remember).

Yet it ultimately was a failure,  in some ways.  They managed to cement a reputation of conservatives as mean-spirited people who don't care about national parks or children. The overreach of impeachment has effectively removed that tool for us with Obama. And we lost the House eventually.

Clinton emerged from 2 full terms more popular than one would have thought,  and he shamelessly goes around the world making speeches and butting in where he should remain silent.

And Gingrich?  After he had to RESIGN his speakership due to the information about his affairs which were on-going while he was attacking Clinton,  he waltzed around making money on the rubber chicken circuit,  got a gig on Fox,  wrote a couple more books,  and married Callista. Then he ran for president and refused to get out of the race long after it was apparent he wouldn't win.

The 90's scenario cannot be repeated first of all,  because Obama is not Clinton.   Secondly,  any threats we make through the House will be immediately demonized or ignored.  (Everyone thinks Boehner has done nothing about a variety of issues and attacks him constantly,  unaware that he has passed legislation which languishes on Harry Reid's desk.)

Utterly useless idea.

In order to get started in politics in many places you have to be comfortably well off to begin with.  Since we've made politics a career that's the way it goes.

Consider that if I wanted to run for State Rep in my district, I'd be up against a retired lawyer worth considerably more than I am, who can draw on her other lawyer friends for help.

Ergo: I couldn't run if I wanted to, because I have to hold down a job to keep the roof over my head. (Well I'm looking for a job again, but the point remains, I can't stop looking just to bounce a prog out of the state house.)

Everything is optics, dear lady.  If Boehner passes legislation and Reid stifles it, does a voter know?

Look, I'll lay my cards on the table: I'm a Murray Chotiner / Chuck Colson conservative.  I mean, "get them by the balls first, then their hearts and minds will follow."  During one of the debates, I would have loved for Romney to stand there, saying nothing after one of the JEFs blatherings and when asked if he had a response, look right at the cokehead and say, "I'm just waiting until this  jackass  has a glass of water to wash down that incredible bunch of lies."

If Reid is holding up legislation, Boehner should make that his one and only message.  "You want answers?  Fuck you - go talk to that kiddie porn addict at the Majority Leader's desk."

But that's also why I could never make it in politics.

Obama could have done then what he has done now, claim he had no idea what was going on, say an investigation needs to be done to get to the bottom of it, express his outrage that groups were being targeted and the msm would have carried his water. In my mind, end of electoral issue. There was no time do to the actual investigation in 2011 or 2012. 2012 is over. The election wasn't about the IRS it was about Obama.

JackStraw at May 29, 2013 09:24 AM (g1DWB)

Well, IIRC (that's for you, Gabe), the narrative of the Romney campaign was that Obama was basically  incompetent.  If Obama pleads ignorance, he just feeds that narrative, right?

And in that telling, an investigation starts.  Of course, it would be dragged on past November, just as Benghazi was, but in my mind an aggressive campaign could have been making all sorts of hay about it up until November.  And I don't think we would have needed to convince millions of people anyway, since the electoral math suggests a comparative few would have turned the election the other way.

354 Re the toy gun incident.

Here in Texas a few years ago there was a case where a student brought an actual gun to school and used it to shoot and wound a bully. The DA tried him as an adult.

This being Texas and not some crazy blue state - the jury found the kid not guilty by reason of self defense - since the testimony established that the school did nothing to stop the bullying. After losing the DA went bat-shit crazy predicting a collapse of society and the creation of "wild west schools". Of course all that happened was a local collapse of bullying.

Amazing how bullies are nothing but people pulling shit because they think they can get away with it - sort of like the current administration - who'd of thunk it?

357 Since when do you need proof in a political campaign?

Posted by: eman at May 29, 2013 05:30 AM (cQ4xo)

358 No Akins, McDonoughs or others that sometimes say the right things and other times say stuff the left wing media machine can sharpen their teeth on. Hugh Hewittwrote a book: "If it's not close, they can't cheat" We need candidates who know: "If I don't say anything overtly stupid, they will have to slander me." Posted by: M. Murcek at May 29, 2013 09:27 AM (GJUgF) I agree with this assessment. Mourdock and Akins ought to have known better. They cost us at least two senate seats, and they might have cost us the Presidential election as well. They were certainly used to motivate the other side. I still cannot believe they were so stupid. The media will use the slightest comment (remember "Macaca" ) in an attempt to derail an election. The Media are our enemy, but we don't have to make their job easy.

Exactly! Why do we play along with the Left's attacks on Bachmann (crazy eyes, etc.)? She had her faults (as many have mentioned up thread), but there are a lot more crazy and dumb Democrats who continue to occupy space in Congress that are treated with more respect by the MSM and the Left: Jesse Jackson Jr. (before he officially flipped out), Sheila Jackson Lee (affirmative action for naming hurricanes!), Denni Kucinich (how was he there that long?), Hank Johnson (Guam tipping over), etc. And then there are Senators like Barbara Boxer and Patty Murray. I'll take Bachmann over any of those Dem nuts and bimbos.

366 #331  Well,  good luck with getting on TV to point out Reid's  fallacies.  About the only person who will ask Boehner to come on TV is Greta.

I will grant that we should be running ads,  but since we NEVER run ads about pending legislation,  I am assuming this is something that the RNC is unwilling to do,  which is not Boehner's fault.  For all I know the RNC is prohibited from doing so.

So how come other groups aren't running those ads?  We had ads from a conservative group attacking our GOP legislature when they wouldn't go fo the full 10% income tax cut Governor Pence wanted.  Why aren't these jackwagons running ads about national stuff?

Just saying something,  over and over again,  doesn't get you publicity on thenetworks,  as surely you know by now.

Also,  I wouldn't exactly pattern myself after the early Chuck Colson,  who after all went to prison.  His later prison ministry,  however,  did a lot of good.

And I don't think we would have needed to convince millions of people anyway, since the electoral math suggests a comparative few would have turned the election the other way. No, it does not. Let me say this again. There was already an audit of the IRS going on by the IG. This was only done because Issa and other conservative groups demanded it. You can't start an investigation until an audit is finished and the audit was finished about 1 month ago. Here's a challenge, go find all the articles on this blog or any other conservative blog prior to the election demanding that IRS abuse of conservatives be made a campaign issue. It didn't happen. There were a few references here and there but nobody was screaming for this to be a central part of any campaign. Why? Because we didn't know then what we know now. Romney did make a very pointed response to Obama after he was accused of killing a woman and being a tax cheat telling Obama to take his Chicago gutter politics back to Chicago. And the msm leaped to his defense and hammered Obama. No they didn't. They laughed at Romney and that was that. Anyway, back to work.

People who are afraid to fight for what they want do that. Posted by: eman at May 29, 2013 09:28 AM (cQ4xo) I've noticed that truth is not an essential aspect of scoring political points. The enemy methodology is to just make the accusation and not worry about whether it is true or not. As LBJ said, It doesn't matter if it's true, what matters is that they will have to defend themselves from it.

371 Wimps wait for evidence. Fighters just make unfounded allegations

------------

They had evidence.  They had testimony and complaints and letters and stories.  This isn't a jury trial we are talking about - this is a political campaign.  Whiffs of scandal, rumors, questions of impropriety are suddenly off limits in political campaigns without evidence admissable in a court of law.

And they were most certainly NOT unfounded.

373 I must confess that there is a part of me that wants a candidate who will say in the debates, "What that other guy said is bullshit" and then sit down.

I think in some ways we should have gone with Trump,  but although he is Famous and says some hard truths in between the BS,  I would bet money he wouldn't do it in a campaign.

So,  if we are going to lose,  I say go with someone who will just say whatever,  like Cruz.

I am always reminded of how disoriented the democrats got when the GOP showed up to protest the Florida recount.  They weren't used to us standing up for ourselves.

It's something to think about.  Now,  off I go to do some actual work.

377 A story: Why Eric Holder must be prosecuted if it is likely he perjured himself before Congress. Because last night I decided not to lie. Background: Last night, searching for jobs, and having just had a preliminary interview for one a few hours prior that went well (and is going to lead to a follow-on onsite interview), I found a dream job with the same company, one I had been looking for five years ago, and one that would combine operations and engineering, and allow me to make real-time decisions under stress--which is important to me, as I flatter myself that I have that ability. And in a case of serendipity, the job was closing that night, but I still had time to apply, and since my resume was already on file, and since it is an outstanding resume, exavtly what they are looking for, all I had to do was click a few times, and bang--closure after several years of wandering. Forward movement at last. I didn't apply. Because I would have had to take a physical, and while I think I am actually fully physically qualified, I have had a condition in the past which, under the current state of knowledge, is permanently disqualifying. Sort of like the age 60 rule for airline pilots. Just a blanket approach. Now, I could lie on the form, and normally I would never be found out. Ever. But that is not who I am, and so I let the dream pass, as so many dreams have passed. I still intend to pursue the dream, though I doubt I will achieve it here. Perhaps elsewhere. Most likely elsewhere. That is for the future. But today, at any rate, the dream died, because I will not lie. In this modern Leviathanic state we live in, American are daily presented with many forms from government, at levels big and small, and they all virtually have the same phrase in them--"under penalty of". Meaning I will provide the correct truthful information, or else. My signature on the form is my bond, my testimony. I must tell the truth, or be liable to consequences if society so chooses. Now, Eric Holder and Barack Obama may not like Congress. They may think it an obstruction to their grand dreams. Others may feel the same way too. But the blunt fact is that just as average Americans must face the consequences if they lie or misinform, so must Eric Holder if he has. It is "the people, in Congress, assembled", not "the people's avatar and tribune, Eric Holder". In testimony before them, Congress, that imperfect body, the only body to represent the self-sovereignty of the people as a national whole, one simply cannot treat it as politics. One must tell the truth, and if a political opponent was able to score points off of you for so doing, then the people still serve as a backstop. If your cause be good and just, they will still support you. If your cause be not good, then even so more important to gave the truth come out, and a course correction made. What treating Congressional testimony as having no more import than spin sessions after a debate means is that real and truly meaningful deliberative decision making only occurs in a handful of folks, kingly folks, oligarchic folks, folks happily running a government that has liars at the top but prosecutes liars at the bottom. This is unacceptable. My view is that I am simply not going to be loyal to a nation where I pay a personal penalty for telling the truth or refusing to lie, as I did last night, and politicians who don't do either of those two don't, and worse, prosper. And that is all there is to it.

380 As an addition--my above is also a reason why I simply don't care how long our illegally resident friends stay in the shadows. There are simply too many of us who limit ourselves, who deny ourselves, because rules and standards say we must (and in fact don't get what we limited ourselves from, ever, but do see others getting those things gecause they did not limit themselves) for me to really give a shit about our friends from Mexico who decided following common American standards was not the first priority. I will contInue to be a basic rules-following-by-default kind of guy, because it is part of who I am (I.e., I do it because I believe in those rules, not because of the societal prestige that might accrue) but I'll be hanged if I love a nation that makes being such a person a synonym for "sucker".

381 Mr Yeo, an environment minister under John Major, is one of the Conservative PartyÂ’s strongest advocates of radical action to cut carbon emissions. His comments are significant as he was one of the first senior figures to urge the party to take the issue of environmental change seriously.

He insisted such action is “prudent” given the threat climate change poses to living standards worldwide. But, he said, human action is merely a “possible cause”.

Asked on Tuesday night whether it was better to take action to mitigate the effects of climate change than to prevent it in the first place, he said: “The first thing to say is it does not represent any threat to the survival of the planet. None at all. The planet has survived much bigger changes than any climate change that is happening now.

382 Re the IRS targeting pro-Israel groups, I think there's an outside chance that the scrutiny/delay has something to do with The Patriot Act and Executive Order 13224 and regulations concerning money going overseas. The WSJ quotes seem pretty second-hand. It's *possible* the bureaucrats misstated the rationale behind the scrutiny and/or the rationale was misreported. 'Hoping the Chronicle on Philanthropy, which was the org that quickly killed the IRS excuse about an uptick in 501c applications being the cause for delays, will look into this. It should be possible to see if there was a similar delay/scrutiny seen with non-profit applications for organizations with other overseas interests. I'm not making excuses for the Administration, btw, but merely reminding us that there's a lot of incompetence afoot.
