Happy Friday.

So, how 'bout that Gomez vs. Markey race? It's got Democrats nervous enough they've dispatched FLOTUS.

There's a new Obamacare lawsuit to keep an eye on.

The Boston bombers originally considered a Fourth of July attack.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Friday, May 03, 2013. On this day in 1937 Margaret Mitchell won the Pulitzer Prize for Gone With The Wind.  In 1937 this and the academy awards actually meant something besides political BS.

5 SC is in the “nullification” business again.   They have declared Obamacare “null and void” and made enforcing it a State crime.   Not mentioned in this AP POS is that 21 States have rejected the exchanges and many others have flat called the law null and void in their State.  In fact if 7 more States decide they do not want it they can call for a Constitutional Amendment to kill it and bypass the Democrats in Congress.

53

Morning,’rons and ‘ronettes.

As IÂ’m sure J.J. Sefton would tell you, a director has to have a keen understanding of human nature.  As well as being a cheerleader, martinet or confidante, he also has to have the mind of a psychologist, knowing how to get actors to do what he wants them to do.

Not all directors have that sensibility.  One who did, in spades, was Cecil B. DeMille, who, for all his temper and irascibility, earned near-fanatical loyalty from his people.  This story is about how he got the performance he wanted from Claudette Colbert:

Before casting her in his 1934 epic Cleopatra, he had a little talk with the actress.  “Now, Claudette, you remember how Cleopatra died.  She committed suicide by putting an asp, which is a venomous snake, to her bare breast and letting it kill her.”

“Oh, Mr. DeMille,” Colbert shuddered, “I couldnÂ’t do that!  A snake?  I canÂ’t - ”

“Wait, Claudette,” DeMille interrupted.  “Do not say that you cannot, or I cannot give you the role.  You want to play it, donÂ’t you?”  When Colbert nodded, biting her lip, DeMille went on: “I want you to play Cleopatra.  Now, we wonÂ’t say anything more about the snake until we come to it.  Will you trust me if I tell you that you can play the scene?”  Very reluctantly, Colbert agreed.  Shooting started and DeMille was very pleased with all her scenes.

One day, of course, it was time for CleopatraÂ’s final big scene.  In her queenly finery, Colbert was to mount the throne of Egypt for the last time and commit suicide.  But before shooting started, DeMille, without telling anyone else, had gone to the nearest zoo and borrowed a huge snake.  He coiled it around himself and walked on to the set, pointing the snakeÂ’s massive head straight at Colbert.

“No, Mr.DeMille!” the actress shrieked as he approached her.  “DonÂ’t come near me with that!”  Still DeMille kept walking towards her.  “I canÂ’t!” Colbert cried, near hysteria.  “I canÂ’t touch it!”

DeMille stopped.  “Very well.  How about this?”  And he brought out a tiny little snake in his other hand, just about the size of an Egyptian asp.  “Oh,” Colbert gasped in relief, “that little thing?  Give it to me!”  So she played her death scene with the snake – just as DeMille had planned for her to do all along.

Here she is, with the snake:  http://tinyurl.com/cuzbwae

And, because I find it bunk-worthy, a truly delicious picture of her:  http://tinyurl.com/bmek9pz

And thatÂ’s all for today.  Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

55 A story that I wish were true ... Bloomberg Refused Second Slice of Pizza at Local Restaurant[\b] New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg was denied a second slice of pizza today at an Italian eatery in Brooklyn. The owners of Collegno's Pizzeria say they refused to serve him more than one piece to protest Bloomberg's proposed soda ban, which would limit the portions of soda sold in the city. Bloomberg was having an informal working lunch with city comptroller John Liu at the time and was enraged by the embarrassing prohibition. The owners would not relent, however, and the pair were forced to decamp to another restaurant to finish their meal.[\i] http://tinyurl.com/cvlqzns ... but alas is satire.

71 Gomez versus Markey givin' you a thrill, Gabe? It's typical Masshole politics, in which two public-teat-sucking Democrats duke it out to see who can give his pals the biggest freebies and fatten his own nest the most.

If the "real" Democrats want to parade Wide-Stance Moo-Chelle around for Markey's benefit, that's fine, but it's also unnecessary. Push comes to shove, voters here will do what they always do: pick the corrupt hack who looks Irish, supports abortion and talks big.

I don't know enough to say, so I'll assume that's true.  There is still a benefit to periodically kicking out incumbents.  It makes them think a little bit harder about what they do.

Hate to say it ('cause it makes us Bad Citizens), MP4, but I'm right with you on this one. Had enough chances to vote for guys with, well, Hispanic, surnames when I lived in CA. Not gonna do it in MA. Just hoping there will be other races/issues on the ballot, so I can drag my ass to the polling place.

At least I can vote in the local election next Tuesday! Two candidates running for Board of Selectmen, and a question about allowing a grocery store (if we ever get one) to beak precedent and sell wine and beer in town.

89 @82 Seems to me the Commie-fag-junkie Complex mainly works to make sure people are susceptible to B.S./B.P. In a better world, Republicans would not. In a Laura Wilder book, Laura's Pa puts two potatoes on an axe for his turn in the community game of charades. It stumped 'em, but most knew what the answer was after he gave it. "Common 'taters on the axe." You can't say that today, but everybody knows Kim's baby's daddy.

Two things about this article:

1. Democrats had a whole team of these types of people helping with the campaign. This might explain some of the irrational crap we ran across, such as the fear tampons would be banned.

2. Their suggestions are about how to frame choices for people in policy, which assumes you have control. The dems use behavorial psychology to win the damn elections!

112 re the Pixy fix -- I noticed it a couple of days ago, when my turn in the barrel didn't happen; I even commented that Pixy had been tweaking the code.

re the CBO using dynamic scoring on the immigration bill -- Hmmm, what an interesting development. By law, they can't do that. Congress said so. Even OCare wasn't dynamically scored.

A brief explanation is in order. Static scoring assumes that there are no other effects when a law is changed. As an example, say Congress increased the tax on cigarettes from $1/pack to $100/pack. Static scoring would say "cigarette tax revenues will increase by 100 times", ignoring the fact that demand would obviously be cut by such a move. See OCare for another example of static scoring.

So the PTBs have decided to weight the scales a bit for the Gang Of 8. Pricks.

Growing up in Maryland, I only knew a situation where liquor licenses were granted by the state (probably a nice little cottage patronage/graft industry there) and that once you had it you were free to set your prices to whatever the fuck you wanted to; which worked out pretty well for the large joints who could buy large quantities of gin or vodka and bottle it under their own moniker for not very much money.  Plus they could be open 24/7.  At least that's how I remember it back in the 70s.

Then I moved to Ohio where to buy hard stuff, you had to go to a state store which means no fucking price competition; love it or shove it.  And being run by the state cocksuckers that meant they were open when it was convenient for those turds.  The good news as far as beer goes is that a decade or so ago, the state legislators decided to raise the maximum alcohol content allowed which meant that virtually all Belgian and craft beers are available in the state.  They still have restrictive Sunday sales but not as bad as in the past when no sales were allowed and every fucking convenient store would pull sheets of butcher paper over the wine and beer making the place look about as aesthetically pleasing as a crack den.

Not really. What are the chances that any federal court will find that the individual mandate de facto does not apply in any of the 33 states that didn't set up state exchanges? Pretty f'n slim. The real issue to watch about Obamacare is how many additional people become uninsured post the law (layoffs, forced conversions to part time, too costly premiums) than were uninsured ante the law. The other issue is that if non-voting conservatives elect Hillary in '16 we can presume that by the end of her presumed two terms in office we'll be saddled with single payer, thereby putting the final nail in the proverbial coffin. - "The Boston bombers originally considered a Fourth of July attack." 143 Miss Marple, on the topic of behavioral psychology and politics, I was thinking about this the other day, when I realized we've successfully made "immigration reform" be defined in the mind of the public as  "amnesty."

The problem is, amnesty isn't a very effective word.  It lacks clear definition.  So in a sense, our side stumbled onto an opportunity to define this debate, but instead of linking the immigration issue  with some term like "terrorist infiltration" or "rewarding illegal behavior," we got stuck with the neutral sounding "amnesty."

You can bet the Dems would have loved to have this debate defined as "giving those poor, undocumented, hard-working, just-like-your-ancestors new and loyal Americans," but it didn't work.

What they got is the next best thing.  So yes, they are much better at this than Republicans.

I get advertisements from Delaware (half hour drive, tops) once a week in the mail. I wonder why? Plus you get benefit of the state employees -- I actually saw a bottle get broken in the store by an employee. It took four of them to clean up the one broken bottle. The cashiers had to stand guard in front of the aisle, while two others picked up glass and mopped. For ten minutes no one could check out. It was like watching Keystone Kops.

155 Gomez was on the phone on the Howie Carr show yesterday. I don't like Gomez and I don't trust him. I left to go grab a snack after a few minutes of listening to him. Gomez is for the Rubio plan for immigration. Howie asked him questions but I didn't want to hear them. His name is Gabriel. Howie was pronouncing it as if it was a woman's name like Gabrielle. I watch Greta's show once in a while but not often. A friend of mine told me that Gomez was on with Greta Wednesday and that she also pronounced it as Gabrielle. Vic, I'm glad you are back with the links. I got up later today and I'll have to go soon.

Here in MS the state is the wholesaler for all intents and purposes. They set prices and decide which brands to offer to the retailers. As you might guess, this leads to high liquor prices; so high in fact that I regularly buy out of state. Even Illinois, which is not exactly Mecca for free enterprise, has lower prices than MS.

Years ago I lived in Connecticut- no beer, wine, or liquor in anything that wasn't a dedicated "package store" and the whole state turned into a pumpkin at COB on Saturday when they closed until Monday morning.  So if you weren't stocked up on Saturday night you had to make a run to Rhode Island.  4pm Saturday at the "Packies" was quite a show.

Then there was Florida- for a time the land of the drive-thru cocktail bars...

Howie's a blowhard.  He always talks tough, but whenever he has a guest, he gives them a tonguebath.  It disgusted me the way he'd suck up to Maaahhty Meehan whenever that jumped-up coat-holder was on his show.  The only time he was a halfway decent host was when he was part of "The Governors" show with Barbara Anderson and Jerry Williams.

There was a little dive place downtown - right in the heart of high tourist area - that I liked to go to for a greasy burger and a cold beer. One day went in and was told they had let something lapse and were waiting to get the license back. Went back a year later, no liqour license still - only iced tea. Went back again another year or so later - still no license. Next time I went back, it was closed.

Never heard of Hanneman before, but man, what a rotten thing to happen.

He wrote "Angel of Death." If he'd never done anything else, that alone makes him the greatest metal songwriter ever. Iron Maiden fans will object, because they're nerds, but "Angel of Death" is the how-do-I-explain-metal-to-the-aliens? song.

Getting killed by a combination of a spider and alcohol is also ridiculously metal.

I ran a search in clinicaltrials.gov for all studies with results for children (ages 0-17) for Plan B and came up with nada.

That's supposed to be a comprehensive database of trials.

So either this one has been nixed (for some reason) or the NYT is flat out lying.

Sadly there are probably enough people out there willing to put their kids through the testing either "for the cause" or just "for the money" (the idea that we don't pay research subjects is made up hokum to make ourselves feel better, it's usually not a ton, but it's enough.) That, sadly, I'm sure a trial could be done.

(FWIW, I once suggested that all trials involving minors and any that paid in aggregated over $1000 should be paid in 5 year savings bonds, since we're not supposed to consider money a "benefit" this would at least move the potential subject towards the same line of thinking.  The idea was roundly laughed at.  Some even called it unethical.)

Sven, I love you to bits, but, McCain does this ad infinitum with little or no ill effects.  Brown was doomed by holding the so called Teddy Kennedy's Senate seat--Mass was determined to correct that come hell or high water.  I actually agree with you about not voting for an R just to vote R, but, I will be doing that in Tulsa's mayoral race.  We don't have a good R candidate--mainly because they changed the city charter and made it a horrible mess--but, we have a choice between an insanely rich evil Dim woman who actually lives in Florida or a weak Republican.  Oh yeah, she was Mayor here a couple of years ago, so we know how bad it is under her thumb.

If 1% of normal pregnancies are ectopic*, which is a life-threatening condition for the mother, and this OTC drug can be self-administered silently by a fifteen year old girl without parental notification, what the hell are parents supposed to think about a daughter cringing in anguish in her bedroom late at night? Stomach ache, back ache, or about to die? I'd want a helluva lot more testing before this gets released to millions of young girls. * Since we don't have data, I can only conjecture that the same rate would apply. Since the abortificent prevents normal placental implantation who knows what happens if the fertilized egg is above the placenta. Too little data.

362 But federal health regulators are just now deciding whether triclosan - the germ-killing ingredient found in an estimated 75 percent of antibacterial liquid soaps and body washes sold in the U.S. - is ineffective, or worse, harmful.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is planning to deliver a review this year of whether triclosan is safe. The ruling, which will determine whether triclosan continues to be used in household cleaners, could have implications for a $1 billion industry that includes hundreds of antibacterial products from toothpaste to toys.

367 Heh. That Reese Witherspoon arrest video is pretty funny. I am always surprised at how alcohol affects some people. I am of the opinion that if it changes your personality (and it's always for the worst) you should leave it alone. Reese is one of those who should leave it alone.

Alcohol removes inhibitions and lets your actual personality emerge - it does not change who you really are. The emergent reality is not always for the worse: it improves my usual "birth control" personality quite a bit.

Dick's Sporting Goods' sales/stocks drop. Don't tick off gun owners.

Dick's has actually been anti-gun for quite a while.  There's one here in Arlington (TX), and years ago they had a wide array of guns- from revolvers and semi-auto handguns, to tactical shotguns, to rifles and hunting shotguns.

I went in (ironically, shortly before Newtown) to price a tactical shotgun for the house, and they had quit carrying them "We only carry hunting guns now."  I refrained from pointing out that the difference between a tactical and a "hunting" shotgun is often simply the presence of a pistol grip, and went about my business.

I can't say I'm surprised that they've stopped selling AR style guns or anything like that.  I will say it's stupid to be the only Outdoor Sporting Goods (read: hunting, camping, and fishing) store that does not sell handguns and semi-auto rifles.

I've read that 1/3 favored Washington, 1/3 favored the British, and 1/3 were the "swing" people who didn't favor either but leaned towards whoever was winning at the time.

Seems like things haven't changed much- except for the fact that the "swing" component today makes up their minds based on what they hear from the Democrat controlled MSM.

434 yes, what if the 25 9/12 child is married with 3 kids living under moms roof?
Does she also pay for those dependants?
do we know?

Posted by: willow at May 03, 2013 09:32 AM (nqBYe)

The "child" must be in college.  That was the rationale.  Kid is still going to school, so parents provide insurance.

As for the rest, it depends on how Mom & Dad's plan is structured.

I work in IT for the fourth largest Health Insurance corporation in America.  I can tell you that plans vary widely in which dependents can be covered.

435 an a 15 year old girl then provide it to a 14 year old girl friend for a 'rainy day' who then provides it to her 13 year old sister who provides it to her 12 year old bestest friend? On and on.

That was the reasoning used to raise the drinking age to 21.

443 and i do, Perhaps Koch's win in their efforts to buy Latimes and its subsidiaries. although who know if that will be better.they aren't exactly conservatives, just not over the top progressives. But i will just hope for truth, that truth is reported not an ideology, how the hell can anyone make worthy decisions/elections etc unless they actually have facts Posted by: willow at May 03, 2013 09:37 AM (nqBYe) I think the "Rise of the Libertarians" is mostly the result of successful liberal media efforts to paint social conservatives as being evil bad guys. Many businessmen don't want to wade into the social issue swamp, and would prefer that people just leave them alone about this stuff. Unfortunately, fiscal policy is merely an extension of social policy, and the person who believes you can have the one without the other is just naive.

Run whoever you want in primaries.  Let them try a platform of outlawing all abortion and birth control, eliminating all social programs, zeroing out taxes and allowing criminals and crazies to buy guns ('cuz it Shall Not Be Infringed).  Bring the purity in Spades.

However...

Once the primary is done and you have two candidates - one running as a Democrat and the other as a Republican - you vote for the "R".

456 Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at May 03, 2013 09:44 AM (zF6Iw) Wow, MP4, now I know you're smarter than this. Let's assume that Gomez is none of those things. That he's a full-on commie who will never vote with the Rep majority. That he's the most DIABLOest RINO whatever RINOed a DIABLO. Yes, if he's the swing vote we won't get much done. But, we will control the Senate, the Senate's committees and thus the Senate agenda and bills presented. This ain't rocket science. In this circumstance, Massa-fuckin-chusetts where they're falling all over themselves to feel guilty about a poor little muslim terrorist that killed and blew the legs off people, a Gomez or Scott Brown is probably the best we can hope for. And, possibly gives us control of the Senate. How is this not a positive?

459 421 Okay, if I understand the brilliant point being made here... In a race in which there are two viable candidates- one Dim and one Republican in fucking Mass, you'd just let the seat go to the Dim because the Rep candidate won't vote your way every time. So, geniuses, please point out the candidate you plan to run down the line, after the Reps lose, who's pro-2nd amendment, Pro-life, pro-free market, pro-American and can win in fucking Massa chusetts. You can't win if you don't play. If we were talking Virginia. Different story. If we were talking Texas. different story. But we're talking about fucking Mass. So, all you magical thinkers, tell me you're actual real world candidate who's going to get elected in Mass. next time around. Yeah...I thought so. Posted by: Staff at May 03, 2013 09:35 AM (G9qZk) Alright Von Bismarck, here's some reality for you: 1) your brand of politics - which the Massachusetts GOP has followed for a quarter century - has resulted in its abject defeat. Only enough Republicans are in office to make the stupidity of Beacon Hill bipartisan. 2) Republicans lose in MA because Democrats outnumber them, and this has gotten worse. Democrats have no compelling reason to not vote for the Democrat. Republicans do not win here, except in special elections with tons of national support promising to oppose a very unpopular bill against very bad candidates. And then, it's a squeaker. You can't win by being Democrat-lite when people can vote Democrat. There needs to be a clear alternative, one whoch doesn't engage in the same scandals and stupidity. 3) Candidates in Massachusetts have in the past at least been somewhat Republican. Gomez is a supporter of Barack Obama who has already promised to advance his agenda. It is foolishness to support this man, and the orecedence of enticing Democrats to run as Republicans is not a good one. 4) His election will not change the balance of power in the Senate. He can, however, be a bipartisan vote on every major issue for the Dems. 5) He's out in 2014. He doesn't stand a chance in hell if pretty boy Brown (who was infinitely better both politically and policy wise than Gomez) got his ass handed to him. Since you obviously believe Gomez is critical to saving the Republic, you should contribute to his campaign.

466 Hey Staff, this is TrumanNorth's comments on your boy. And Truman is big time plugged in to Mass GOP politics. I do believe I'll take his word for it. Gomez is a creation of the MAGOP who has never won an election. He has not run for anything before except for a single selectman race, which he lost. In 2008 and again in 2012, he was an Obama bundler. Prior to the special election, he wrote a long letter to our Democrat governor, Deval Patrick, asking to be appointed to the position. In the letter, he promised to support Obama on gun control, immigration, and healthcare. Emphasis mine.
