— Gabriel Malor Happy Thursday.
NRO's indispensable Daniel Foster writes about Sen. McConnell's behind-the-scenes efforts to foil Obama's liberal plan.
Mayor Bloomberg -- and one of his gun-grabbing lobbyists -- got a ricin-tainted letter in the mail. Several police officers who intervened became ill.
The AP, in addition to the NYTimes, said "no fuckin' way" (paraphrase) to the AG's offer to give them an off-the-record chat about the DOJ's secret warrants targeting journalists.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. Thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic.
I think my last two stories were a little boring, so hereÂ’s a short Marilyn Monroe one. Personally, I donÂ’t believe itÂ’s true, since it shows MM as an almost inconceivably dumb blonde. But thereÂ’s just the outside chance that it might be true, since the one thing MM could do better than almost any other actress was know exactly what to say to get a man interested:
While shooting 1954Â’s River of No Return, Robert Mitchum noticed that, between takes, Monroe would go off to a quiet corner and read a very thick book. One day he followed her, to find that she was poring through a dictionary of Freudian terms.
Why on earth was she reading that, Mitchum asked? “I feel one should know how to discuss oneself,” was the rather pompous answer. “So how far have you gotten?” Mitchell went on. Monroe handed the book over, and he saw that she had begun a chapter titled “Anal Eroticism.” “That’s charming,” the actor responded drily, handing the book back. “How often do you think that will come up in a discussion?”
Monroe ignored his crack and went back to her reading. After a while, she looked up and said, “What’s ‘eroticism’?” A lopsided grin creased Mitchum’s face as he explained.
A minute or so later, Monroe looked up from the book again, and in her baby-doll voice asked, “What’s ‘anal’?”
And there you are. Hope you all have a wonderful day.

Why isn't the GOP doing anything in general about anything?

We had a discussion about this on one of yesterday's threads. IIRC, Gabe felt that, while the abuse may have been reported, there was nothing Romney could do because the Dems would like and then point to their lies as truth. Others of us (myself included) believe nothing was done and nothing is being done because the GOP is as much a bunch of corrupt statists as the Dems and ought to be swinging from tree branches right alongside them.

Oh, well we've done that twice already so we couldn't possibly do it again. Similarly, we couldn't possibly consider chained CPI and means testing for those under 55. Too horrifying to contemplate. Because - and I think we all know this - whenever you change something for the younger set, and completely exempt the older set, it's the same thing as picking their pockets of the latter group.
You're right, by all means, let's just let the sheer demographic weight of the Boomer generation drive us all off the cliff. That way long after the Boomers are gone everyone else can eat shit. Carry on.

This "I payed in" shit is one of my pet peeves. When I hear that I want to grab whoever said it by the lapels and tell them: No, you didn't "pay in" to anything, you paid A TAX! And the government has no obligation to pay you back for any taxes you have paid. If you disagree with that there's a whole boatload of people in a government agency called "the IRS" (you may have heard of them, they've been in the news recently) who can set you straight.

Yes, I am sure there is lots of tax evasion going on. Thing is, for the IRS to collect on that marginal 17%, you'd have to grant so many new powers to the IRS that we may as well put a hammer and sickle on our flag.

I see that today the Boomers are the punching bag of the day. Like we did the Social Security Law writing back in the 30's. No, that was MY grandparents' generation. Oh, well, then we Boomers were responsible for taking the money out of the fund, right? Oh, wait, that was people who were my parents generation in Congress.
I guess the REAL problem is that we Boomers are actually alive. Well, excuse me all to hell.

I place part of the blame on the Benghazi deaths on McCain & Grahamnesty. They wanted us to help the Libyan rebels, they were "heroes" to quote McCain. I have spent two days outside in my garden all day and was at work until midnight last night. I haven't seen that much news except email on my iPhone.
Crazy McCain wants to arms the Syrian rebels. That's not going to turn out well because we know AQ is in with the rebels.
What a crazy week. I was out in my rose garden Tuesday and at one point had to put on Sherpa lined sweatshirt jacket. Today it's going to be near 90.
Thanks Vic for the links. Of course TFG is full of lies. I wonder if any of the press are going to boycott Holder's off the record chat? I would love it if they went and then reported on it, especially if he admits he was wrong.

***********
This.
I know so many people on SSDI, welfare, Section 8 housing, etc. and other benefits that it's mind-boggling to contemplate. And I live a middle-class lifestyle. There are many people on my street on benefits of various kinds; when I moved in to the neighborhood 20 years ago, everyone worked. And I don't think it's just a function of unemployment. It's become a lifestyle.
I have an entire branch of my family that live at the Jersey shore - 7 adults with adult children who live on benefits. Granted, they grew up poor, doing seasonal work during the summer tourist season but they were very hard workers. But once they discovered the benefits lifestyle, they succumbed and their children have done the same. Several of them have businesses on the side - eBay, flea markets, babysitting, etc. But they avail themselves of every single benefit possible.
And if anyone has seen the form for benefits recently, in most states it's been revised: if you apply for one benefit, like food stamps, all you have to do is check off that you want help with heating oil, phones, medicaid, housing, etc. and Bob's your uncle.

It was amazing the rooms I saw that were frozen in time. People don't realize that rooms get dated, so they keep the same styles and colors for decades.
My favorite was a living room from the mid sixties, with "modern" furniture in electric blue and kelly green prints and a big glass hanging ball lamp in blue and green. It was pristine, had never been used because it was the "good" room.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A plan by Attorney General Eric Holder to hold meetings with news organizations about guidelines governing investigations that involve reporters has run into snags over the terms of discussions.
The Justice Department wants the meetings to be off the record. The Associated Press issued a statement saying it wants any meeting to be on the record, meaning it could be the subject of news stories. And The New York Times said it won't attend because of the department's off-the-record ground rules.

Jean, it would be just desserts for Fox to do something like that, but then Holder and DOJ could swing the argument back to "Faux News not a legitimate news organization that plays by the rules..." and the rest of the MSM might agree to play that tune. I want it to be ABC, CNN, AP, Washington Post, NYT, etc., both to head off the Fox News angle and to show that they truly are fed up with the situation. I still think there are a number of organizations out there who are still on the fence about the administration right now. I want to see one tell the White House to fuck off.

A new system for retirement...
At birth, the government loans each person $100,000 at .5% interest in a self-directed (parents) account that can be invested with any approved firm. At 21 the loan matures and the $111,000 is repaid.
The balance carries forward with additional contributions by the individual. At 65, assuming a 5% return, the person has a 1.6 million.
The $100,000 loans don't impact the U.S. balance sheet because it's a wash between cash out and debt entry.

Regarding any of the Pundits of teh Interwebz as "indispensable" is a joke of monstrous proportions. Of course they make mistakes -- instead of beating feet to get a real story, they rely on quoting each other and publishing "facts" they glean from various websites, which in turn gather their info from still more websites. Poppin' Fresh is a particularly egregious example of link-spreadage which, combined with his unparalleled quest for "fairness," totals up to a whole mess of nothing..

My pay stubs have been showing Federal Taxes Withheld, State Taxes Withheld, and two different FICA taxes ... and one of those FICA taxes was listed specifically for my eventual SS benefits.
If I've actually become successful enough to be able to spend my SS benefits on golf fees ... WTF business is that of anyones? My yearly glossy brochures from the SSA telling me how much my monthly benefits would be NEVER specified that I had to use them for dogfood and dirty spoons. And while we're talking "fair" ... why is it fair to give someone who lived like a grasshopper the gains from the frugal person who lived like an ant ... hello, even Aesop knew better than that shit!

So the reason SS is becoming insolvent is "the Boomers did it and I gotta pay, wah, wah". I'm a Boomer, almost 60, and I didn't vote for any of this shit. Neither did most of the Boomers I know. But from what I've seen here and elsewhere, a whole of of you Gen X/Y/Z/Millenial cockholsters sure did.
And let's not forget the real reason SS is running out of money now. The fact is the goddam Democrats started robbing the SS fund back in the 1960s to pay for their assorted socialist programs, botched wars and the like. and it has never stopped. But even after the Repubs took control of the Congress in '94, AFAIK they didn't stop it either. If they had simply left the SS fund alone there would have been enough money to cover the Boomers and whomever else. But no, they needed the money to buy those Commiecrat votes.
Social Security was NEVER meant to be the end-all and be-all of someone's retirement. It was just a supplement, a bit of extra walking around money for the elderly, and that's all. Anyone who thinks this was supposed to be an actual retirement pension is an idiot. Assuming I live long enough to retire at 65, I have a pension (pensions, actually), and SS might supplement that by a grand or so a month. Oops, forgot. That's BEFORE taxes. Oh yes, Uncle Sugar taxes SS as income, just like your pension, annuity or what-have-you retirement income as well, if any.
I could go on, but what's the point. Bottom line is that it's never as simple as some people would have you think...
