Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes. If any of the Horde ride, I hope you are able to this morning. It was a beautiful commute for me and let me forget for twenty-odd minutes the tinpot Tito infesting the White House.
Today IÂ’ve got three short stories about three comics:
Buster Keaton: In 1925, Keaton (then under contract to MGM, where he was very unhappy), hired the famous writer Robert Sherwood to come up with an original screenplay. Sherwood put pen to paper and very quickly came up with a story about a young couple in New York who make their way to the top of a sixty-story building under construction when they discover that the elevator has stopped working for the night. The only trouble was that neither Sherwood nor Keaton could think of an interesting way of getting the couple back down again, so the idea was abandoned.
Thirty years later, Keaton ran into Sherwood in the lobby of the Savoy Hotel in London. “Don’t worry, Buster,” Sherwood called to The Great Stone Face, “I’ll get you down from there yet!”
Harpo Marx: Although sometimes overshadowed by the verbal pyrotechnics of his brother Groucho, Harpo was a gifted comic in his own right. The trouble was that, since he didnÂ’t speak, he had to keep thinking of things to do in order to keep Groucho and Chico from stealing scenes away from him.
During the stage run of The Cocoanuts, he paid a chorus girl to run across the stage so that he could chase after her, leering and honking his horn. The first night this happened, Groucho didn’t bat an eye; he just looked at the audience, said, “The nine-twenty’s right on time,” and went on with his scene. Harpo’s chase brought a big laugh, and once he got off stage, he told the girl they would do that every night.
After the show, one of the stagehands took the comic aside. Did Harpo know, the grip asked, that the girl he was chasing was gangster Jack “Legs” Diamond’s current squeeze?
An ashen-faced Harpo quickly found another girl for the scene, but kept paying DiamondÂ’s friend for the rest of the run.
W.C. Fields: Fields was filming Tillie and Gus in 1933. In one scene – which happened to be filming after eleven o’clock at night – Fields was supposed to be in a diving costume when something goes wrong. He would be hauled up out of the water, presumably half-drowned, and gasp the line, “Is there a doctor in the house?” Everybody thought this was a funny line, and audience reaction later proved they were right.
But for some reason, Fields kept changing the line. On the first take, he came up out of the water, pointed at his flippers and muttered, “Primo Carnera’s carpet slippers.” The director chewed Fields out, but the comic shrugged. “Why, that’s funny. Everybody knows about Carnera’s big feet.” But of course, another take was called for, and it was now getting close to midnight.
On the second take, Fields came up, pointed to his flippers again and said, “Charlie Frobisher’s bedroom slippers.” When the director called him on his ad-lib, Fields looked genuinely puzzled. “What’s the matter with you? Don’t you know the name ‘Charlie Frobisher’ always gets a laugh? People will howl at it.”
The director shook his head as the scene was readied for a third take, now after midnight. He had never heard Fields do such bad ad-libbing and wondered if the alcohol had finally made him lose his touch. Fields was sent into the tank again, and this time, on coming up, he spoke the proper line. But very soon, it was clear that Fields had by no means lost his touch; his contract, it turned out, paid him $800 extra every time he worked past midnight.
And there we are. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend.

The overweight thing is one of the most subjective measures there is. According to most height/weight charts, I would be considered slightly overweight. According to my doctor, I am actually a few pounds lighter than he wants my target weight. I trust him more than some bureaucrat who made a chart.

On the other hand, you have
"A spirited motor bike, with a touch of blood in it, is better than all the riding animals on earth, because of the hint -- the provocation to excess -- conveyed by its honeyed untiring smoothness." T.E. Lawrence, of Arabia and later Sussex.
He'd know; he'd ridden a whole herd of borrowed or stolen horses, camels, onagers, and depending on which of his critics you espouse, an Arab or three. But that smoothness thing, oh Jesus. Military issue at the time was a 1000cc BSA V-twin, saynomore, and his personal mount, the one that killed him most likely, was the "Brough Inferior" with a J.A.Peters V-twin, the engine that made Woolf Barnato's parallel twin Triumph seem even-tempered and reliable.

The charts are bullshit. They haven't been updated since WWII, when they were devised from...measurements taken of US Army volunteers. The "average" became the "normal" became the "ideal" with no actual research.
BMI is also bullshit--no difference for gender, for fuck's sake--with no actual measures of health like body fat percentage or blood pressure. "Normal BMI" does not immunize you from teh diabeetus, and "obese BMI" does not make it a certainty. But that's what we've been reduced to.

Lebanese ShiÂ’ite group Hezbollah has ordered Palestinian Islamist group Hamas out of Lebanon effective immediately, the Middle East Online news agency reported on Thursday.
The move, the report says, is due to Hamas support for the opposition forces fighting to oust Syrian President Bashar Assad. Both Hezbollah and Syria are allies of Iran, which provides the two with financial and military support.

Oh, but they have, several times. I've watched in fascination as my 6'2", 225 frame went from "upper tier" to "overweight" to "borderline obese." I've scarcely changed, but my status has. My doctors are amused, but they offer frail-ass excuses for it instead of the BP-inducing anger I exhibit. That's why for a few more months they make the big bucks.
I think they want me to weigh about 165. I can remember weighing that. I was sick all the time.

Oh, a panhead! What I wouldn't give for one of those. Unfortunately, stately Poppins Manor only has room for one bike. Of course, in my fantasy world, I'd own one of those Hogan's Heroes bikes with the sidecar, so I could carry my golf clubs or my dogs in it. There used to be a factory in Hong Kong that refurbished old WWII bikes, but I don't know if they're still in business.
But hey, since we're talking fantasy - if I'd won that Powerball loot, one of the things I'd have done is contact Ford: "Hey, you guys built the car for Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, right? Pull out the blueprints and build it for me. Here's a check."

BMI - The last few years I was on active duty the Navy said they'd discharge me if I went over the BMI index. I have a light bone structure so I was weighed every 3 months to make sure I was in compliance. Couldn't weigh more than 167, they wanted me to be at 154 for "ideal". I'm 6'2" and had to run 10 k every day and really watch the diet. Turns out the Navy numbers were generated by a Beltway Bandit outfit that got their input data by measuring the Marines at Camp Lejune. Good cross section there you betcha. On flight physicals I couldn't weigh more than 214 or I'd be too heavy.

That is so me, dangergirl. My heart just breaks a little when I see a run over animal. Especially dogs, cats and deer. Many years ago, I was driving down University Blvd., a very busy road in Orlando. A mother duck and all of her 10 or so ducklings were walking in a line across that busy road. I didn't see them until it was too late and I ran over several of the ducklings. I was so traumatized that I had to turn around and go home, sobbing.

Teej-I'm small boned too. I have lost weight recently, and did not need to. It's stress. I knew I lost weight but now I'm 91.6 and I'm going to have to make myself eat even though I'm not hungry.
My brother has been in the hospital in Maine and almost died. He had four strep infections. He survived the infections but now he can't move his legs and can only use his left arm. He's in an acute rehab now. I have asked for prayers for Paul on the ONT, but haven't lately. He can't move because one of the strep infections was in his neck and the surgeon had to remove and fuse three discs. Surgeon told me that it would be weeks before we would know his full neurological results. Now it's been five weeks since surgery. He's been in the hospital or rehab since March 30.

Morning, all!
So I just read the article linked at Drudge about the 3rd grade boy forced to perform oral sex on three classmates. I have officially given up on humanity.
The ringleader -- who was a fifth grader, and who had been accused of touching a fellow classmate "under her skirt" TWO YEARS EARLIER -- sounds like a real prince. I expect he'll end up shot dead in an alley before he's 20 years old.

I told him to tell Social Worker that he wants to come back to MA. He has no money and has free ME healthcare. There is nothing to be done about such types unless they recognize this tendency in themselves and get professional help.
However, it does seem to me that someone should be trying to figure out who got the woman to go to Syria, since she was divorced from her husband.

I'm an insurance agent and I have to admit I'm taking a perverse glee in explaining What Hath Barack Wrought to clueless clients, I twist the knife extra hard if I know they're a lib or they comment about "free health care next year" or some such, all while maintaining a totally professional demeanor and a butter-wouldn't-melt-in-my-mouth innocence.
"Well, Mrs. Mouthbreather, after January one you'll have to purchase a qualified health insurance plan on the exchanges or pay a fine. For example, a Silver level plan will probably cost your family of 4 in excess of $20,000 next year. (*gasps*) Now the PPACA limits that by offering you a subsidy to help cover that (*relief*). Generally speaking, your premium is limited to 9.5% of your income (*calculating in head*), any premium amount in excess of that will be returned to you by a tax credit (*dawning realization*). Yes Ma'am, that means you have to lay it out, but you'll get it back when you do your taxes. Now the coverage a Silver plan gives you hasn't been finalized, but it'll probably be 70/30- you pay 30% of your medical costs and the insurance picks up 70%- but the good news is that there's a cap (*hope*) You have an out of pocket maximum each year of twelve thousand five hundred dollars (*absolute shock as she adds all those figures together*) Do you have any further questions?"* I smile sweetly and in my head I'm screaming "NOW who the fuck do you wish you'd voted for you idiot?" I take a special joy in answering "No" to those clueless morons who stammer "But...but....but.....it's supposed to be free!". Then I go over it again, emphasizing the premiums and out of pocket costs "TWELVE THOUSAND, five hundred dollars EACH YEAR". Hey, they voted to fuck up my industry and basically end my career w/in a couple of years, they deserve to find exactly how hard and fast they're going to get what they voted for, don't they?
* That's a pretty fair generic summation of how the exchanges will work, realize that not much of this is finalized, and the individual variations are endless.

The public school system is infested with liberal minions and slackers but it has its fair share of fine teachers and administrators too. The best thing you can do if you have a kid in public schools is be involved in their school activities and to constantly engage their teachers. If you have the time and the wherewithal, get elected to the school board.

AWESOME picture, for three reasons:

2) The stupid fuckup expression on Obammy's fucking fuckhole of a fuckmug; and
3) The two together help to fan my fury, which, while never in danger of cooling, can always use more ragefuel.

Yes, since ACA was but a gleam in Obama's crazy eyes, I have been telling people that their insurance premiums are going to go up anywhere from 5 to 12 times the cost they were paying. How do I know? I work in IT for a health insurance company. It's that damn math again--THE F@CKING MONEY HAS TO COME FROM SOMEWHERE!
In other news, everyone is quickly figuring out that the exchanges are going to be a horror to build, astronomically expensive, too confusing to use, and will be ignored by the LIVs because they still know in their heart of hearts that they can get their health care through the emergency room. How expensive? We budgeted $100,000,000 for our exchanges in the four states in which we do business and it is not enough money.

Why is the stupidity so widespread, then?
I think just because BMI is easy to calculate. It doesn't mean much - but it IS easy to calculate, and looks like actual SCIENCE. I mean, it takes math and everything.
On related note, I read Gary Taubes' "Why We Get Fat (and What to do About It) about 30 pounds ago - interesting read from a science writer who did a pretty thorough job looking into the history of nutrition and weight loss research.

Consumer spending down? In this supercharged economy how can that be?
(Reuters) - A drop in government spending dragged more on the U.S. economy than initially thought in the first three months of the year, although consumer spending looked relatively resilient to Washington's austerity drive.
Oh I see, it's all that austerity that's slowing down the economy.

Timon;
To remove a kid from public school requires that you can either afford to place them in a private school or, at least one parent can be devoted to educating the child at home.
I dont know about you but we had 4 kids that went through public school and we made sure every one of them had the opportunity to get into the 'advanced program' which was really just a moniker for the program that taught the content you and I learned in school and not the minimum ed syllabus designed to boost the schools score on the TAKS test. (Texas has standardized testing program to evaluate kids and schools; its an advancement test for the kids and a rating for the school). Both the girls graduated early but the boys just slacked. The boy's are paying for it now by taking remedial math and writing in college.
I am looking forward to the day when I can home school my grandkid(s)

My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos. Ruined dreams. This wasted land. But most of all, I remember The NoVaMooMe. The people we called "Morons". To understand who they were, you have to go back to another time. When the world was powered by the dark liquid. And the desert sprouted great cities of pipe and steel. Gone now, swept away. For reasons long forgotten, two mighty Morons went to a bar and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without hooch, they were nothing. They built a house of straw. The thundering Morons sputtered and stopped. Their leaders talked and talked and talked. But nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled. The cities exploded. A whirlwind of looting, a firestorm of fear. Men began to feed on men. On the roads it was a white line nightmare. Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The Morons took over the highways, ready to wage war for a barrel of beer. And in this maelstrom of decay, ordinary men were battered and smashed. Men like BCochran and Washington Nearsider. The Moron Washington Nearside, in the roar of an Ette, he lost everything. And became a shell of a man, a burnt out, desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wandered out into the wasteland. And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again...

See that is another of the dirty little secrets, the health insurance companies are REQUIRED to build an exchange if they want to sell insurance in the retail business space (individuals). Well, since most companies will be dumping their plans and giving folks a few hundred bucks to buy insurance--it is all going to be retail. So state governments are saying to themselves, "Why should we build an expensive exchange and then be forced to maintain it ad infinitum. The health insurance companies HAVE to build them, so we will piggyback on them. The health insurance companies have no recourse since the State Insurance Commissioner is their ultimate boss."
