Happy Tuesday.

Head Start, the taxpayer-funded daycare program of dubious outcomes, has a new problem: Obamacare. The Daily Caller's Neil Munro notes that Head Start programs are preparing for year-over-year cost increases due to the President's healthcare law. I'm really enjoying all these Democratic constituencies who're just now discovering that raising the price of labor isn't really a great idea.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev's mother wants her son's body sent back to Russia for burial.

Gov. Christie had lap-band surgery back in February. Good for him. He told only his family and his chief of staff. The rest of his staff found out yesterday.

Senators are talking about revising the 9/11 AUMF. If authorized the use of the Armed Forces against those who "planned, authorized, committed or aided" the September 11th attacks, or who harbored them. The armed forces are still proceeding under the 9/11 AUMF today.

And, on a lighter note, I'm really looking forward to both the Man of Steel movie and Hans Zimmer's score for it. Here's a taste from the soundtrack, which will be released June 11.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Tuesday, May 07, 2013.  On this day in 1992 the 27th Amendment was ratified which prohibited mid-term pay raises for Congress.  And it showed what worthless things they could come up with now.

Hello, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Thanks for the morning briefing, Gabe and Vic.

Two stories first, then a political (I know, I know) observation:

There are times when audiences like a movie better than itÂ’s stars do.  Gable, for most of his career, didnÂ’t like Gone With The Wind – he considered it a “costume movie,” which were the sort of roles he hated.*  Erich von Stroheim loathed Sunset Boulevard calling his role of Max von Mayerling “that goddamn butler part.”

Helen Hayes, “The First Lady of American Theatre,” was herself never comfortable in Hollywood.  When she and her husband attended the premiere of her 1931 movie The Sin of Madelon Claudet, they were so disappointed in her performance** that they kept groaning as the picture rolled.

Finally, a man behind them tapped HayesÂ’ husband on the shoulder.  “If you two donÂ’t shut the hell up, IÂ’ll have you thrown out.  Now pipe down!”

The first time I heard that story, it reminded me of a similar one concerning the composer Arthur Sullivan (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame).  It seems that one evening during the run of Iolanthe, Sullivan dropped into the Savoy Theatre to see how the production was coming along.  As he stood at the back, he began humming along to the overture.

Then a man tapped him on the shoulder.  “Excuse me, sir.  I came here to hear SullivanÂ’s music – not yours.”

So there you are.  Now for the political point: I have no wish to give the feckless, ball-less clowns in the GOP any ideas, but any conservatives running in Â’14 or Â’16 need only four words for their campaign:  Have you had enough?

Have you had enough of a president who goes to sleep when our embassy is attacked but wakes right up to congratulate a washed-up ball player for coming out of the closet?

Have you had enough of being told you donÂ’t pay your fair share?

Have you had enough of a Congress that shoves Obamacare down your throat while they exempt themselves from it?

Have you had enough of screaming fools calling you a murderer because you believe in the Second Amendment?

Have you had enough of an administration that runs guns illegally to Mexico and then blames you for it?

Have you had enough of the Free Shit Army?

It was just a thought that came to me this morning.  Dismiss or adapt as you will.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*to be fair to the King, costume roles were not his forte, Mutiny On the Bounty being the exception that proved the rule.  Before GWTW, Gable was thinking of his disastrous turn in Parnell, which set his mind against the role of Rhett Butler.

**even though it won her an Oscar.

32 Where's our version of "No justice, no peace"? If Gosnell walks, we'll...well, we'll sit down and take it because we're too good a people to wreak havoc on innocents just because one man went free, no matter how much of a monster he is. And that seems to be the recurring theme. "We're going to take this right away from you, and you can't stop us with the vote, so whatcha gonna do? Huh? Huh, you bitter clingers? Now we're gonna let this mass murderer go free, whatcha gonna do now?" And, of course, if there ever is a reprisal no matter how small, it'll be the Worst Atrocity in the History of Atrocities and proof that we're all bad people.

38 #23  My son's neighbor had the lap band surgery.  Four weeks later he dropped dead.  Blood clot.

My sister has a theory that people who get that surgery are food addicts,  and when they get the surgery and cannot eat like they did,  they switch to something else.  She has known 2 nurses who got the surgery and both ended up leaving their husbands and sleeping with every guy they could...replacing food with sex.  A third she knew started drinking excessively. (She works at a hospital.)

39 I was up early this morning with insomnia and read about the Jody Arias trial which I knew almost nothing about. Why? you might ask. Because I don't have a TV that gets reception of any stations so I haven't seen that non stop coverage of this "vital" news story. So the story has sex. love, Mormonism and an attractive defendant. No wonder why they don't want to focus on "Fast and Furious" and Benghazi/ I don't think trial should be live streamed at all. It makes the criminal justice system into a mockery and and turns a murderer into a celebrity.

Even if America falls into the darkest tyranny in the history of the world, the ducks will still be there. The alligators will still be there. 46 From all the pics I see of Christie lately, this lap-band thing really doesn't work that well. Can there be complications from such surgery? The idea is that there is negative feedback -- also none as pain -- from shoving too much food down your pie-hole into the now constricted stomach area. Most people perceive a sense of discomfort when their stomach is full and stop eating. Others can 'power' right through that pain and force the surgically constricted area to expand back to its previous size. For a man lacking in the self control to prevent a member of the opposing party from turning a natural disaster into a photo-op, yeah, I can see the surgery being a waste. One of the reasons I do abdominal exercises is not to get 'killer abs' but to maintain the constricting muscles over the stomach area. I get the sense of fullness and desire to stop eating very quickly. It's also cheaper and less dangerous then surgery.

He likes to bring up at family and other events his ideas on how to "solve" the budget crisis in the state so he can continue to get his pension. Most of his ideas revolve around higher taxes on those rich bastards of course. Close all of the loopholes for those rich bastards also. Yet he knows of about a dozen of two pension income holders that live out of state, yet keep a P.O. box number in state to prevent them from getting Illinois taxes being taken out of their pension. To him, that's an okay loophole or maybe breaking of a law.

Like all libbys, it's okay if I do it.

You have to make a lot of changes but it certainly helps you get there. I'm down 80 lbs and holding. However, Christie can still take a flying leap if he runs for POTUS.

75 So that means Christie's running for president in 2016. I think a slimmed down Chris Christie would make a wonderful running mate with Jeb Bush at the top of the ticket. A northeast 'moderate' along with 'compassionate conservative' part 2. Dream team.

What you are seeing in the resistance to Christie is the fact that normal people do not like to see someone rewarded for disloyalty.  Christie contributed to Obama's win,  and in doing so sentenced the nation to 4 more years of misery.

It looks like states will finally get the ability to collect sales tax from the 50% who pay no taxes now, reducing the burden on those the liberals say aren't paying their "fair share" through progressive income taxes.

This is a win for conservatives.

In other news, Marco Rubio continues to try to change the status quo on illegal aliens, which some here vocally defend.  Hopefully, he'll be able to put together a deal that stems the flow across the porous border, identifies who is here and helps reduce the financial burden on the taxpayers.

It looks like states will finally get the ability to collect sales tax
from the 50% who pay no taxes now, reducing the burden on those the
liberals say aren't paying their "fair share" through progressive income
taxes.

You really have no idea what it's like to live in a blue state, do you?  Taxes never go down.  They are always increased, with the cocksucking solons patting you on the head like a little child, saying, "well, we know we promised to drop the sales tax back to 3%, but even with this internet sales tax, we still have unprecedented shortfalls.  Don't you want us to have good roads and schools?  Don't you want a working infrastructure?  Besides, the increase is only a cup of coffee a week.  You can afford that, right?  For the children?"

You are either incredibly naive about politics, in which case you should shut up and let somebody here put you some knowledge, or you're an apologist for more government, in which case you should screw over to Daily Kos.  An internet sales tax will never - I  repeat, NEVER - result in a lowering of taxes on the working stiff.

Bank.  On.  It.

You have a program that is not working, and lots of money is being tossed at it, and what does the stupid party do?  It says  WE HATES TEH HEAD START, WE WANTS IT DED!!

Does the stupid party ever explain why?

No, it does not.  It just goes out there and gives ammo to the Dems, who then get to say Rs hate widdle kiddies, and don't want them to learn.

It happens every time.  With virtually any issue.  Why?  Because you start with the premise that people understand the concept of limited government, when they don't.  So you take for granted that you are understood, when you are not.  That's why you look like evil rich people trying to keep the poor man down.

I would imagine too, that it's simply not comfortable to be that heavy. That and wishing to run for President. All three are not incompatible nor bad reasons to have the surgery.

These are generally NOT healthy people anyway, and the chances of complications from blood clots, stroke, et al is already elevated. The population is skewed. Same for the full on gastric bypass. Risks are already elevated.

So what's this I'm hearing about some OMG domestic terrorist in Michigan? Some old guy with pipe bombs and molotovs, possibly a *gasp* militia guy?

I'm kinda mocking it because he sounds more like a survivalist that got out of kilter and maybe part of a small group of like 6 weirdos. He was flying a US flag upside down out of his trailer. They seized an AKM I think.

Oh, and its a teeny town. Rural. I think posters here were saying sommat like rural cops would *never* get into the gun seizure bidness. Second look?

FBI raids MN man's home. MSN finally get the red-neck terrorist they dream about.

"Buford Rogers, 24, of Montevideo, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He remained in federal custody Monday and it was not clear if he had an attorney.

"The FBI believed there was a terror attack in its planning stages, and we believe there would have been a localized terror attack, and that's why law enforcement moved quickly to execute the search warrant on Friday to arrest Mr. Rogers," FBI spokesman Kyle Loven said Monday.

Rogers appeared in court Monday wearing a construction company T-shirt, jeans and work boots. He answered "yes sir" and "no sir" to questions from U.S. Magistrate Judge Tony Leung."

I think you are conflating our justifiable criticism of Bush's policies with our opinion of him as a man.

I have never read any comments that have cast aspersions on his character or his patriotism. He does love this country and is a good man. I doubt anyone will argue that point.

Ditto.  I have many, many criticisms about Bush's "compassionate conservatism."  I hate that he simply would not fight back against the traitors on the right (because he understood the dignity of the office, unlike the dog-eating cokehead squatting there now), nor allow others to fight for him.  And I never want another Bush or Bush acolyte in the White House again.

Agreed. The guy was handed the Y2K bubble collapse, and then the $1 Trillion economic hit of 9/11. He had to deal with both the military response to 9/11, as well as all of the economic fall-out. He made multiple attempts to rein-in Freddie/Fannie (all thwarted by the Dems). He also took what I thought was a good shot at reforming SS, again, thwarted by the Dems.  He is criticized for TARP, but the housing bubble wrought by the CRA and Freddie/Fannie dictated that something must be done. Obama has done *nothing* but lead us further down the path blazed by the same people that set this entire mess up to begin with.

I was just writing a friend about him. Says this:

"He's still having problems with his lungs, which is
worrisome. [wife] is a wreck over it since he's almost a month old now
and its still a problem.

Its that he seems to collect fluid in his lungs so they're giving him
a kind of diuretic called lasik that they give congestive heart
failure patients, which should help him pee some of it out. Plus
caffeine now [that's my boy lol]

The unnerving thing is they've got all kinds of oxygen rescue stuff
around his box now. He breathes fast or very slow, not really normally
everyday. Some good days, some not-so good.

In that sense its good that he's there. We just have horrible fears
that he's going to be like this forever or need oxygen tanks or some
shit. Its irrational but who's rational about their kids?"

As a Brick and Mortar business owner I agree 100% with jwest on this.

I'm expected to not only collect sales tax in 8 different jurisdictions.

I must also renew yearly, 4 county and 2 state Home Improvement licences.

2 State Prevailing wage authorization licenses.

Rockland County "Waste Haulers" permit ( A new law costing me $1,500/yr.)

I could go on and on.

So instead of dumping 70% of my lifes savings keeping things afloat the last 5 years.

I should have closed it down. Sold the showroom/warehouse. And gone online.

Then I'd be free of the $200,000/yr sales tax collection.

The $30,000+/yr in property taxes.

And be free of the multi licenses, permits, insurances and government ca ca that I'm currently subject to.

And the States can charge you more to make up the shortfall.

Is Rick Perry going to take the sales tax on internet sales and develop a basket of new social programs?

If so, you better cross him off your list of good conservatives.

s he going to take the sales tax on internet sales and cut other taxes by an equal amount?  then yes, he is a good conservative.  If youmust raise a tax, offset it by cutting another.  I prefer cutting them all, but baby steps.

I think he'll take the opportunity to lower other taxes, as will other conservative governors around the country.

Well, we'll see, won't we?  Dollars to donuts most of them won't.  Because politicians see you as a walking wallet.

As to those of you in blue states, you're fucked. Too bad.

So the internet sales tax is a fair tax, but living in a blue state that will jack up taxes regardless is a "too bad?"  I take it back.  You're not stupid.  You have neither the latent intellect nor the self-awareness to recognize stupidity.  You're ensconced in a self-created bubble where you smell your own farts and rejoice in the pungent, well-aged aroma while at the same time wondering why those around you are wrinkling their noses at the scent of Chris Christie's crusty dick cheese.

290 As a Brick and Mortar business owner I agree 100% with jwest on this.

"Is Rick Perry governor of "America" I mean hey I'm on board what state couldn't use a boom?"

You need to understand that the sales tax to be collected is state sales tax, not a new "internet tax".  Texas will collect whatever Texas residents buy online times the percentage.

As I said, Perry will most likely reduce other taxes, as that is what he likes to do.  If that proves popular with the people of Texas, other states will copy it.

Head Start should follow the same path that Medicaid does.

It should pay the day care providers $25/hour, like Lizzie Warren demands.

It should bill the giver-ment $85/hour for each child.

And the giver-ment should pay 10% of the claim - $8.50/hour - leaving the day care to find some way to get the rest of the money.

Then, when all of the Head Start providers are out of business, we can blame the Tea Party, bigotry, and the NRA.

For those living in blue states that see other taxes being lowered in Texas while their taxes stay the same or go up, it will provide an incentive to change to a conservative governor.

308 If taxing internet sales is suppose to even the playing field for the brick and mortar stores then lower the State Sales tax by the same amount that the internet tax will bring in. If a State has a 6% sales tax and just for example the internet tax will bring in 50% more revenue to the State, then lower the Sales Tax to 3% for both Internet Sales and Brick and Mortar Stores. I bet the Brick and Mortar Stores this is suppose to help would like that alot, but of course this is not to help the Brick and Mortar Stores but again for Dems and Dems-light to raised more taxes.

Heard on the radio this morning....

Mooch is giving the commencement address for Bowie State University, a rather small school in MD.  Since she's deigned to address the young skulls of mush, the venue was changed to University of Maryland's Comcast Center in College Park.  The address is scheduled for May 17.

Because of what the news termed "traffic congestion issues," students at UMD-College Park are being told to move out of their dorms by May 16.

Only thing...classes are still going on that week at UMD-CP, and finals are scheduled for the 17th.

In other words, for Mooch to give the address, students with finals scheduled for the 17th must move, in the middle of Finals week, and find a place to stay for a night, then make their way onto campus somehow to take their finals...to accomodate a commencement address for a totally different school.

316 #271  Serious question:  why didn't you set up an on-line web site?  Is what you sell not amenable to that type of selling?

I ran a booth at an antique mall for several years.  I had to pay booth rental, a commission to the mall, plus sales taxes. I quit to babysit my youngest granddaughter

When I got where I wanted to sell again,  I went with eBay,  and eventually opened a eBay store.  No overhead except for shipping supplies and cost of goods.   I will never become wealthy on this income, but I am making more money than at an antique mall.

I have noticed many retailers listing on eBay, including Toys R Us and a Minnesota hardware store where I buy my metal polish.

The payment is on top of Compton’s salary that will be paid through June 7, even though he has been out of the classroom since December. School officials did not provide Compton’s salary Monday, but their plan pays teachers with his 12 years’ experience $43,340 to $59,647 a year. Lexington-Richland 5 taxpayers also will foot the bill for more than $31,500 in attorney fees, records obtained by The State newspaper under a state Freedom of Information Act request show. Reagan's best efforts in law enforcement, CA jury vindicated Angela Davis for providing the literal Courtroom get-away GUN that led to a black panther shoot-out with police, and death of bystanders. Their death meant squat in the face of California social justice via terrorism. After all, she didn't KNOW who would be killed as the result of her illegal activity. Great CA career move. I get the general idea of a internet sales tax (even if I don't like it), but wouldn't it be much easier to just state that the tax is collected at the rate and locality of the company?  Seems to me it'd spark a sales tax war to see who can get sales taxes the lowest to attracted businesses.

This current law doesn't do that in any way shape or form.  If's part of the reason I'm not so hot on Sales Taxes in general. I'm not sure they're as up to the consumer as people think.  In lots of cases you can't escape them by shopping around (how far are you going to drive for food exactly?) and the LIVs seem to keep increasing them (probably because they don't notice the effect of them.)

Seriously.  Go try to pass an income tax increase or property tax in my state right now. It'll fail 90%-10%.  Sales tax increases however have all passed.

@316 #271 Serious question: why didn't you set up an on-line web site? Is what you sell not amenable to that type of selling?

I do have quite an extensive web site. And it brings in many customers.

But the products I sell in most cases requires professional installation.

And pictures of products do not reproduce as well as seeing the actual product.

And my online competitors rely on my showroom where their potential customers can look at product. Then go online to find the cheapest price.

The easiest way to fix this is to drop sales tax and instead apply a users tax on the manufacturers. This will level the field and cut down on tax avoidence.

I did a job years ago in the home of one of our Countys town supervisors.

The first word out of his wifes mouth on receiving my quote was "If I pay cash no sales tax?"

I issued my standard reply. "You can pay cash, check, credit card, gold bullion or barers bonds. Everybody pays sales tax."

Changing to a Use Tax will help end this cheating.

Because everything they believe is based on what they like. They "like" ObamaCare. So, the choice is: Are you lying or are they lying to themselves?

So, you could walk them through all that--even give the direct, exact quotes from top Dems saying the same thing--and they'll call you a liar.

421 Gov. Christie had lap-band surgery back in February. Good for him ____________ NO, not good for him and the doctor who recommended it should be shot. He's too big for a crap-band. And the damn things, if the manufacturer could quit getting famous people to get them placed, would be on the road to medical malpractice. They are dangerous, ineffective and, therefore, money makers. They slip, they erode into the stomach and surrounding organs. You have to have them filled and unfilled. They can be cheated easily. And every bander I've ever met maps the route to the bathroom from their table at every restaurant because they puke at the drop of a hat. THE MANUFACTURER ADMITS THEY HAVE OVER AN 80% FAILURE RATE. And given that in WLS (weight loss surgery) success is determined by maintaining 50% weight loss at 5 years, that's pretty damn pathetic. Over 80% of people with a band regain 50% or more of the weight they have lost and have to have a revision surgery. And teh frigging thing has to be replaced every 6 years. Banders are cash cows for surgeons. Not only that but banders rarely get to goal, especially if they are as large as CHristie. It shouldn't be placed at all but definitely not i someone with more than 100lbs to lose. A sleeve would have been less invasive and safer but still would have failed him. The 5 year stats are just coming n but at least it doesn't have the complications of the choke chain. A gastric bypass (RNY or as I call it Ruined and Why?) would have been a better choice, even with it's pathetic rates for success, at 75% of people maintain 50% of weight lost at 5 years. Puking, dumping (hypoglycemia), seriously restricted diet, huge vitamin regimen and no NSAIDs but it does almost work. A duodenal switch would have gotten him to goal, effortlessly. DS maintains 80% of weight lost at 10 years. 98% cure for type 2 diabetes, yes, I said cure. 99% cure for heart disease and high cholesterol. You have to take a shit load of vitamins but it's a fair trade. High protein, high fat, low carb diet. I bet Allergan paid a pretty penny to have that band placed and Christie and his family are going to suffer for it. Sorry for the rant but this is a subject close to my heart.

Sales tax is most transparent tax there is.  It's not hidden like a VAT or subject to class wars like the income tax.  Every time you buy something, the tax is added right in front of your face.

You know what you're paying.

It's important that the tax be tied to the state and locality that the taxpayer lives in.  That way, each individual can make an assessment every election day if they are getting what they pay for.

Also, the sales tax is something everyone pays.  No free riders.

What's not to like?

Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss didn't seem fazed by a rare congressional invitation to golf with President Barack Obama Monday, sinking a hole-in-one on the par-three 11th hole.

The White House noted that the president was the weakest golfer in the group, with the highest handicap, and paired with fellow Democrat Udall, who had to the lowest handicap.

Really? Barry who golfs every chance he gets is the weakest golfer. Golf, basketball, throwing a baseball, Prezzy Wonderful truly is the greatest athlete ever

428 In other words, for Mooch to give the address, students with finals scheduled for the 17th must move, in the middle of Finals week, and find a place to stay for a night, then make their way onto campus somehow to take their finals...to accomodate a commencement address for a totally different school.

Well, 90% of them voted for TFG.  Can't say I'm too heartbroken.

429 Sales tax is a regressive tax, so why are the progressives for it?

430 This morning she's doing a book signing for her gardening book at a bookstore in upper NW DC. It's raining here today and yet the line of people is already blocks long.

431 Or perhaps your gut. Posted by: logprof at May 07, 2013 09:27 AM (+iA5G) Yep, my size 4 gut. Down 110. Lost it all in 1 year, 3 years out and eat like a fiend (protein and fat) to keep my weight up. My spousal unit is down from 342 to 170, no longer insulin dependent diabetic (A1c 4.7), no other meds. 4 years out. Normal cholesterol on a high fat diet. Which reminds me, it's time to start the bacon and get more heavy cream for my coffee. Also time to take batch 1 of my vitamins.

432 @11  This is the time in the election cycle when the MSM tries to recapture their integrity.  They will report on Democrat misdeeds and even show some outrage.

These stories will all disappear before the next election cycle and the journalists will all tout their evenhanded coverage of the news.

433 Internet sales tax hurts small businesses and on line start ups. It doesn't level the playing field but big business and dems love it. Good luck with the implementation and collection. Called my Congress critter in hopes it can be killed in house.

434 @53 Posted by: Tsar Nicholas II at May 07, 2013 07:21 AM (r2PLg) You're still giving too much credit to libtard "thought". Reality or sane argument can't enter their brains because they have a set of "magical wards" to keep away unwanted thinking: 1) "Oh, that's just from Fox News." 2) "So what, the Republicans do it too." 3) "Yeah, what about BOOOOOOOOOSH!!! Ha!!" 4) "You're a racist!" See? No thought involved at all. Just magical thought wards to keep away logical thought.

436 @ Nevergiveup - here we go, as always. For background, I watched the whole prosecution case. Did you? (This thread is dead officially now, right?) A) bullshit - by which concise, erudite argument you refer to which aspect..? B) there was blood evidence all over the place, and they chose to ignore it ... Blood evidence where of what? The shady cop with a mad on for OJ, who shouldn't even have been there found the bloody glove at the scene and oh my also finds its mate at OJ's? That's case-killing BS right there. Nothing was presented effectively in court. C) he had no alibi and plenty of motive - alibi and motive are irrelevant if the State fails to hang the evidence on you. Many prosecutors and cops are so sure someone's guilty, but the law requires more than hunches and feelings. D) guilty as sin - possibly. Probably. Doesn't change that the prosecution failed = jury did the just thing. Humanly just does not always equal true justice, obviously. It was a travesty, regardless of his guilt or the outcome.

437 Vic, if I am "guilty as hell and everyone in the country knew it," and you're on my jury, can you be trusted to judge based on what's presented in court? If not, stay off juries. Also my lawn.

438 What was presented to the jury was DNA evidence that proved his guilt beyond a shadow of a doubt to all except the twelve dumbest people on the face of the planet. Thirteen if you're included.

Thirteen if you're included. -Regular Moron Why thanks, moron, for your precise debate point and ripe odor. All I know, all I'm talking about, is what I saw go on in court, and it was a prosecutorial fail. On almost every point. Defense was almost an irrelevant sideshow to the three-ring circus of media b.s., judicial stupidity, and prosecutorial self-immolation.
