Can we call Ed Snowden a traitorous crapweasel now? In addition to confirming some of our programs against the Chinese, he spilled the beans on specific operations targeting Russia.

BenK was appropriately skeptical of CNET's report (that was stealth-edited on Sunday, two days after initial publication) on Rep. Nadler's hearsay that he was informed (by Unnamed Official) that NSA listened to the content of phone calls at any analyst's whim. That report has been denied by NSA and walked-back by Nadler.

Some of the companies involved with PRISM have released statistics on their involvement providing governments with information.

There was a punchy op-ed in the NYTimes over the weekend disputing claims that the U.S. has fallen behind Europe in broadband internet tech.

"For the first time in Obama's presidency, half of the public says they don't believe he is honest and trustworthy." His approval rating fell 8 points in the past month to 45%. "The drop in Obama's support is fueled by a dramatic 17-point decline over the past month among people under 30."

Speaker Boehner says he won't bring an immigration bill to the floor if it doesn't have majority support from Republicans.

35 Regarding Snowden and the "Is he or isn't he?" argument.

Is it not possible that the guy IS a traitor but was cagey enough to drop the "spying on citizens" info first?   For example,  if he had come out leading with the news that we spied on the Russians and the Chinese,  wouldn't everyone here have said "GOOD" and immediately judged him a turncoat?

Instead,  he comes out with a bit of information that gets all sides up in arms (and with no real proof as we usually require) and after everyone has decided he is a hero he starts dropping this other stuff.

I sit here and see that Cheney thinks he is a traitor, as do several other people I respect.  On the other hand,  Sensenbrenner,  who wrote the original Patriot Bill,  says they would never have known about this if he hadn't come forward.

Since I have no reason to disbelieve either Sensenbrenner or Cheney,  I am faced with a conundrum.

I do appreciate bringing to my attention that the NSA is looking at all communications in the U.S. as I thought the Patriot Act only authorized interception of calls that initiated overseas. The worm has turned though... and a lot of us just do not trust the Feds... period.  I wish Snowboy would shut his trap about hacking China, but I think that can be because he is a traitor with intent, or just young and making statements that will engender him to his hosts.  Who knows, but at what point does "statements" he makes are no longer verifiable but pure propaganda for China or they'll turn him over or snuff him.

This is the problem:  Boehner sends out mixed signals.  It seemed from what Vic quoted that he was determined to reach an agreement with the Senate and JEF on this, maybe to keep the donks from badmouthing the GOP next year as "obstructionist" which is complete horseshit imo, both as a strategy or being truthful.  Now Gabe runs an article that indicates otherwise although it's mainly based on second hand information.  I called Boehner's office last week to complain about his seeming support for immigration reform that the JEF could live with as a priority when the shit is hitting the fan on so many other things.  He creates his own problems by being so wishy washy on every fucking thing.

I have named this syndrome the Sergeant Schultz Syndrome or SSS.

This syndrome seems to have originated in the Washington D.C. area and severely infected government workers.  I believe the Centers for Disease Control should send a team to Washington and trace the origin of this syndrome down.  But Washington is a big place.  Where should the CDC start?  Well, these various government employees do seem to have one common denominator-The White House.

Let's move this to an area within my direct experience.   Once upon a time, I was involved in training for my then employer's usage of one of the major legal search content providers.   The provider rep came in and gave us the overview on various new databases in our package, including people search information.   Said rep stressed, repeatedly, that such searches had to be directly related to a case and had to involve someone in the case, be it party, witness or potential juror.   Said rep further emphasized that looking up your ex and your neighbors was a violation of the TOS, not to mention far closer to the line of stalking then anyone wanted to be.   The company had the right to terminate immediately the contract should such usage take place.  Everyone nodded along and made appropriate oh yes we understand noises.  After the rep was done, I got up and reminded everyone that usage was monitored and that I would be going through every single search everyone did for the next two weeks.


All y'all see where this is going.   Within 48 hours, I had to reconvene an emergency firm wide meeting where I proceeded to lose my shit at 90+% of my co-workers who had gone out and more or less immediately started creeping on everyone they knew.


I'm sorry, but there is no force on Heaven or Earth that will convince me that the NSA wasn't listening in and/or reading calls inappropriately.   If someone can do it, someone will do it.   That's basic human nature.

I really want to know what was Snowdens' timeline... why did he want it to come out in late May when he obviously was setting it up since January...  He shopped the story a little bit... Here's the one big problem with that.

NO PROGRAM should be secret from the American public.  The results of those programs? Yes.. most definitely.

But when an agency flaunts the laws and creates new programs out of whole cloth, referencing existing laws that do NOT apply, then the agency becomes the criminal.

Snowden's revealing an illegal program should not be considered a crime.  If Congress has not authorized the program, it is not a legal program, and efforts to inform the public should be rewarded - hence the whistleblower laws.

Any information revealed by Snowden that was captured by those programs or that in any way hurts the security of the United States, should be prosecuted.

Basically, if even having knowledge that the program exists would allow our enemies to ruin its effectiveness, then it should be kept secret. Simply confirming to the US Public that there are (to pick one out of the hat) sooper-seekrit sooper-spies operating in Cold War Russia (or Iran, or China, or wherever) would ruin the effectiveness of the program- people would act differently, including Americans who happened to be in those locations on legitimate business- which would make such sooper-seekrit sooper-spies largely ineffective. On the other hand, saying, "The NSA is logging the source address/IP, destination address/IP, date and time sent and received, and size of payload for every email that touches a US Server" isn't going to help anyone. The only option to avoid that then becomes phone calls (oh, wait, we were monitoring that data, too) or sending actual mail and packages (which would greatly reduce the terrorists' effectiveness). As for "individiuals deciding what is legal and what is illegal," that's happening now. The difference is that the people making those decisions now are doing it in such a way that we'll likely never know, and even if we did they would never be held responsible for a bad decision. So, yeah- I think whistleblowers are a net good thing. I also think they should stand there and take their lumps if a jury of their peers decides the whistle they blew was inappropriate, but I have no problem with people saying, "Hey, your government is violating your rights in this way," and allowing us to act on it. As for Snowden- he is a douche. "Traitorous" remains to be seen, but it's looking like that's not inaccurate either. So what? I'm much more concerned about what my government is doing to collect my private information.

Local new guys here in Texas were talking about a border patrol agent who was saying border crossings are at an all time high in the Rio Grande Valley and they have been ordered to do nothing.

 

Looks like Odolph has put out red meat for border crossers and they've turned it up to 11 to get in on the freebies.

In other words, I think that old espionage model, at least as applied to this kind of activity, is broken.

Sure, it is odd after years of vacuuming up data that Microsoft chose to only disclose the last six months of requests and those 6,000 requests let to 31,000 consumer accounts were monitored.

AllenG:  No they aren't.  The Government has long had rights to the meta-data (did a package go from A to B, on what date, how much did it weigh) from the postal system or FedEx, just not the contents of the letters.  They have standing to get the meta-data (just not the NSA, whether or not they working for the FBI - its not in their charter).  Your Fourth Amendment rights start where the expectation of privacy begins - you don't get that with the metadata.

Patriot Act, DHS, TSA, ATF/FBI/IRS, Faith Based Initiative, perpetual interventionist "nation building" [benefiting the Saudi goal to achieve global Wahhabi Caliphate] US tax funded and US Military re-re-re-redeployed wars for the global corporatist pirates to "win blood money" while our troops are tasked to win the hearts/minds of enemies through suicidal CinC ordered rules of engagement--dictators "over there so not here"...there is no end to this federal "outreach" to flaunt abuses. "Because I Could." Our Chief Justice, another neoconservative GOP gift, likely broke international law in his dealings with a known shady adoption agency, leaving him vulnerable and his decisions worse than questionable. But then, how many neoconservative supporters admit the resulting treachery? "Don't lay this at the feet of the Patriot Act" self righteous ignorance. All branches are functioning to the detriment of the US citizenry. Delete the "meaning" of [American] citizen. And blame us, Congress, not yourselves. Imagine the IRS going after your business because you didn't hire enough immigrants who "deserved" a job. As if the current working force does not. And this observation is from a "right to work" border state with a governor for life. It's pretty boy Rubio who can't cut it as a man of integrity. Just like his GOP sponsors and friends. What does Rubio's face time show? That it's easier to prevent than to defeat the farts from gaining position. So quit supporting the pretty boy assholes because they impressed you with their clean, articulate, faith promoting act. Show us the RECORD. Replace congressional incumbents who don't support Cruz and Paul GOP Leadership. If the platform ain't cleared soon, what exists is a rotted sinking ship still selling tickets to ratty suckers. There's no way to wait until '16 at which point the Republican Leadership will dictate which national candidates gain endorsements, party funding and promotion, and the grand prize ticket. More "electable" (supposedly benevolent, kinder gentler) authoritarian tools like Rubio?
