4 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Wednesday, June 19, 2013.  On this day in 1934 the FCC was created by FDR.  The reason given was to regulate radio frequencies and licenses.  Of course this was a lie because the Department of The Interior already did that.  The real reason was so that FDR cold populate it with cronies and use it as a weapon against people who disagreed with his policies.  And he immediately went to it.   But the liberal historians consistently rate him as the hero of the universe and savior of mankind.  So donÂ’t think the current bastard in office will be treated any differently by history, if we have one.

5 Yet another Obama family trip to Africa and people are starting to get tired of this shit.  Sequester is only used to shut down shit people like and stuff that is very important and highly visible.  But the family from Versailles DC still spend money like it was flowing from an artesian well money well.   The similarities with King Louis XVI are remarkable.   > 20% of the workforce is unemployed and they eat wagu steak and travel like Kings.   If we had an opposition Party their travel budget would have been killed long ago.

9 Man captures four yoots vandalizing his FILÂ’s home next door and holds them in a closet until police get there.  They charge him with “Endangering the welfare of a child” and he is facing 4 years in jail.  This country has gone crazy, but this was in NY.  The yoots did $50,000 in damages.  What it appears is that the parents of these little angels are trying to escape the obvious civil suit that is coming.

66 Radioactive doesn't look like anything.  It is not visible to the eye.  What people think of the "glow" comes from the swimming pool reactors and spent fuel storage which has a "glow" around the fuel bundles.

That is the alpha and beta particles being emitted from the fuel exceeding the speed of light in water and causing an electromagnetic shock wave that is visible.

It is called the cherenkov effect.

Supporters of a high-profile charter school with a focus on Nahuatl culture wept and held each other after the Los Angeles Board of Education voted to close its high school campus.

Anahuacalmecac International University Preparatory High School had sought a second, five-year charter. Some critics accusing the school of promoting Aztec revolution.

After the vote, Marcos Aguilar, the schools' co-founder and executive director, addressed a crowd of supporters waiting outside the boardroom. "We have had more than 500 years of resistance. This is nothing new," he said in Spanish. "They can cut our leaves. They can snip our feathers, but they can't chop our roots."

Also:

"The school’s a model on the national and international level," said Ernesto “Tlahuitollini” Collín, who serves on the charter’s board of advisors.

99 @86 Yeah they are trumpeting this BS from the CBO. So in the course of a year illegals could fund less than 1/3 of the sandy relief bill or 0.1% of our national debt. At that rate they could pay off our current debt in 894 years. America will long have ceased to exist.

117 Based on the single review of the "sci-fi" offering, I'll skip it.

"Yes, he goes in to space to colonise a world but its just a flimsy construct to create a platform for the author to discuss a utopian political landscape, free from religion and bigotry and professional politicians. There's absolutely no laser guns, sci-fi ideas or attempts to imagine some of the problems that they may face. In fact, so little effort is made to be a sci-fi novel, the cultural references are all from the now. 90s tv show Friends gets mentioned, as does Thatcher and even Frank's headphone wires get tangled. He has an i-watch, which is about as far as the sci-fi goes."

177 The "criminal" argument was a strawman. So... yeah. Posted by: Rocco at June 19, 2013 08:10 AM (A3rQI) It's not a strawman? Someone posited what would happen if we took a race of people in our country that commits a good number of crimes, and uses a substantial amount of our welfare money, and shipped them to Canada. I pointed out it's not parallel. The parallel would be if we just sent our blue-collar workers across the border to Canada.

According to witness accounts and videos recorded at the event in the Mexican city of Leon, organizers of the soiree poured four buckets of liquid nitrogen into the pool, which reacted with chlorine to form a toxic cloud.

250 I'd almost be inclined to support amnesty if it meant the 30 million new citizens would be Republican voters. Amnesty is wrong, but if it's politically good, what the hell? Yet it's both wrong and politically horrible for the GOP. It makes zero sense that the party is doing this.

252 Oh, and most surprising to me (a Canadian immigrant), my US history from 1492-1877 was based on race, class, and gender, and included a screening of both "Mickey Mouse Monopoly" and "Roots". I knew more US history than any of the American born-and-educated students.

253 Have to say, as an older college student, I'm often astounded at what my fresh out of high school classmates don't know. Basic things, like that electrons are smaller than molecules, basic things in anatomy that you should know just by having a body. Photosynthesis is a thing. It's really disheartening.

it isn't what they don't know which is troubling, it's that they know so much that isn't so.
perhaps most troubling is that they vote.

255 Back in the mid-70's, I foolishly decided to skip a grade to be with the smart kids who I was friendly with. Bad call. I became the dummy of the smart kids when I should have stayed with my other group of friends and be the genius of the dummies. The one good thing was that I was able to take AP Bio and Chem in one year and not have to take any more science, including physics, in high school.

264 Taliban puppet Karzai "furious" at being the third party. There can only be one...Taliban. Obama Diplomacy: Direct Negotiation with Terrorists Smart as stupid? It's like the Mexican intelligentsia admitting it's government's inability to fight, extricate or subdue the cartels, so capitulate to negotiations. Well, when the government agents are corrupt, it's just another organized crime ring. Laws are used to subjugate those who abide the law, and enable the criminals that much more. /cut out the middle man -- asswipe Karzai needs his US tax funded horde confiscated on his way out as his "thank you" rebate to US Taxpayers. /dreaming. "There is no more Terror" ? ... so bring our troops and our tax dollars home. Rebuild the USA, "nation building" politicians--hopeless. They just want what's been getting squandered elsewhere in their own pockets. Gotta clean house in Washington first. But no. The American Interventionist Global Warfare agenda is merely in another hopscotch move from one anthill to the next. Only Syria is by no means a primitive tribal Afghan situation, nor the lay of Libya, either. And still, the Air Force Magazine is warning that the US should NOT get into Syria. "There is no more Terror" ?...what it makes plain is that our Unconstitutional government's agenda "is" terrorism. Revisionist "meaning" being opposite, sales buying sucker support. Where W's propaganda line was to "Take it over there so we don't have to fight it here," O is negotiating to "Bring it home so we don't have to fight it there." As if either policy means anything beyond "war for sale" industry profiteering at taxpayer and humanity's expense. Yin/yang art of perpetual warfare, the Progressive American Way. OPEN BORDERS AND AMNESTY FOR ALL /what difference does it make?!

My HS textbooks where probably how orwell would imagine them. AP US history textbook had two pages on WWII. One full page was on the internment camps. The other may have been "oh noes nuclear bomb" but i don't recall that so well. Probably half the book was in the form of those one page "features" they are so fond of, typically focusing on how strong women singlehandedly wrote the Constitution or how the progressive era was the greatest thing ever. But this was California, so there's that.

It seems the dude who confronted the kids got angry and screamed some threats. Cops shoulda told the kids that it was a good lesson to learn the easy way that you never know whose stuff you are trashing. Shoulda told the homeowner to chill and that he likely blew his chances of recovering damages.

But officer friendly no longer has any discretion in most jurisdictions anymore.

Almost nothing about the founding of the country and what little there is concentrates on racist white people who were the founding fathers and owned slaves. There is a reason why the average voter on the street knows NOTHING (see interviews above). --- American history was my very first college class after graduating high school 20+ years previously. I am a reasonably intelligent person, tenacious when I want to do something. To have this sumbitch liberal jack hole make me feel like I was stupid and a failure damn near killed me. Thankfully my husband was very supportive, as always (love you honey), and told me to play the game. I almost quit college over that class. Sociology (racial and cultural minorities) was another kettle of fish altogether. It is a required class for the program. Each day I didn't stab someone was a victory. I came out of that class with over 100% because I'm good at BS. I spent every class knitting and rolling my eyes. I'm pretty sure I can get along with people who are not 42-year-old Canadian immigrant suburban housewives. There was no need for me to take that shit.

I couldn't even make it that far. For one thing, there was no suspense. Since the entire premise of the book is that it's a "report" written some years after the fact- guess what? Humanity survives. But the other problem I had with it was the stupidity of so many people you were supposed to feel sorry for. No, I don't feel sorry for stupid. I did like the part where the Hollywood douche and all his Hollywood douche friends got killed and eaten by a hungry mob of humans, though. As for this movie? Who knows. Just from the commercials they've completely changed everything (possibly including the main character's name). The zombies in the book were classic Shamblers, but the ones in the movie look more like Leapers/Runners (for instance).

Posted by: rip van winkin at the 80s at June 19, 2013 08:52 AM (WVMUQ) World War Z isn't meant to be a narrative, it's a collection of vignettes. It's a very traditional method of story telling that's been gussied up and presented as new and fresh because instead of a Victorian maiden's diary it's stories being told to journalists. Now, I liked it, but it's not a ground breaking format or anything. I feel the same way about Robopocalypse. It's not bad but it's not zomg so awesome. I would love to see Danielewski write a ZA novel. Now that would be fascinating.

332 Dealing with "sanctuary cities"? Simple, but expensive. It was part of the back-story of Arthur Miller's "View from The Bridge." If local authorities will not cooperate with immigration enforcement, you flood their particular zones with federal operatives, and charge only under federal statutes.

It's the "Untouchables" approach. Useless if the federales are also corrupt, doubly so if the federal government is uninterested in enforcing its own law, and virtually guarantees broad support for a criminal underclass, which in our case we have already got anyway.

Teh funny, since that foolish argument goes both ways: Being a partisan comes down to whether you're humane or inhumane. The answer actually proving that partisanship inevitably negates the rights of free thought, hence being a force for inhumanity. Rather, being above the fray allows a more comprehensive perspective overall. N'est-ce pas? True enough, each major party has mutated into a symbiotic socialist-authoritarian entity. Each in its own manner sells Big Government "for your own good" propaganda, the dissolution of Constitutional Governance. Keep it simple? Tell the next bigot that you're an Independent who enjoys scholarly research because to do otherwise would be ignorant, staying stuck on stupid. Keep each dialog on target point. Don't allow the opponent to change the subject in order to evade a criticism. Cut it short. Yes, I've been the older student as well. It's a delicate social setting, being the peer age of the (pseudo) professor.

It's really an excellent metaphor for how I imagine life went for Jews, particularly in some of the lands invaded by Nazis. You're just going along living, and all of a sudden OH FUCK.

Recall, the original Kindergarten curriculum was children's observation of nature in the garden with the teacher explaining (simply) what things were called, and how those things live and function, what they need to be healthy. Observation required the ability to count (numbers) and duplicate sounds (phonics). /In contrast with the Garden of Eden, Adam got to name things whatever, heh. At least that implied the development of memory, the responsible to recall, consistency? /a lot of high schools today permit their seniors to take community college (or university undergrad) coursework during the school-day schedule so long as the high school graduation requirements are first met. I did that once upon a time. And some school districts today incorporate community college freshman curriculum into their own offered for high school seniors.

396 Alberta. Calgary ish.

Nice!

Tell me something...

A while ago, I was talking with another Canuck on another forum, talking about deregulating the utitilies market and he mentioned what a failure it was in Alberta.  The electricity prices tripled after deregulation and he went on and on about how big of a failure it was and the only solution was "moar government".

I did a little digging into Alberta and deregulation, but as far as I could tell, the govt still owned the distribution network but not the source of generation (power plants).  It wasn't a true deregulation as one critical portion of the market was still under control by the govt.  Plus, no doubt some utility companies saw a chance to jack up rates while they had the chance.

What's your take?

Posted by: EC at June 19, 2013 05:18 AM (GQ8sn)

397 it would be great if one of those famed "zombie metaphor movies" was to point that out instead of the "evils" of capitalism/consumerism. That would be interesting... it'd have to be a book (with some success) first, and the author would have to refuse to let major changes be done to the plot/characters. Unfortunately, that's often something authors don't realize they can demand.

There's a 7 day waiting period, while paperwork etc is being done. This is now at least 90 days, and the state is threatening dealers who release the guns once they're no longer legally obligated to hold the gun.

A better name for what was done here in the US was re-regulation.  And do you know who was behind it?  Our good old buddy ENRON.   CA electricity prices went through the roof and that was with rolling blackouts.

407 377 Maddog- I don't think you can do Zombie apocalypse without a dumb military.

Our actual armed forces would make for a short book.

Yes, and then again "no."

If you do it right, you can do a Zombie apocalypse and still get around an intelligent military. I am Legend did it pretty well (okay, those were Vampires, not zombies- but same idea).

And I at least have to tip my hat to Max Brooks. When he wanted to neuter the US Military, he did it by having politicians over-ride actual military commanders: making decisions based on photo-ops and such, and removing military commanders who objected. So there's that.

But, yes, especially when you're talking classic Shamblers, the US Military would have no problem (at least on a case-by-case basis) dispatching them.

Posted by: AllenG (Dedicated Tenther) at June 19, 2013 09:11 AM (/PCJa)

Well really almost all "zombie" apocalypses are actually vampire apocalypses.  The dead rise.  They bite you, you die and you turn.  That is vampirism.  The actual classic zombie is an undead creature that is under the control of someone else.  "I am Legend" influencing "Night of Living Dead"  is the likely change for zombies to have more of a vampiric motivation.

Posted by: Anna Puma (+SmuD) at June 19, 2013 05:23 AM (pyjZt)

409 You could do it (the ZA story as insight into how we're screwing up militarily) mixed POV- the President struggling against Congress and an intrenched political class within the Military itself to get good commanders installed, and some grunts on the ground. For roughly the first half of the book, the grunts die like flies. Bad orders, worse tactics, and a political/command class that are more interested in optics and covering their own asses in case of failure leads to a lot of failure. As the President slowly rebuilds the military, things start to get better. High level Generals are replaced, and begin cleaning things up. Tactical losses still occur, but in ways that set up Strategic wins. When the President finally has a solid military in place, the General goes for a "grand stroke" which looks doomed to failure, but because of the bravery, commitment, and decisiveness of the troops and their commanding officers, the US Military wins the day. Someone better than me: write that.

The word that gets translated "vampire" is really a description of how we view modern zombies (Or the other way 'round- "zombie" describes vampires- but I think I've got it right). It was only shortly before Brahm Stoker wrote "Dracula" that Vampires started being "sexy" (yes, Dracula was the first glittery vampire). Zombies under the control of someone else are completely different culture. Both cultures (European and Caribbean Islander) use the same word, but they're talking about different things.

So knowledge and wisdom with liberty are set aside in favor of the authoritarian agenda, "ownership" in human trade at the taxpayer expense, "free money" for corporatists to horde in feudal fashion. This "obesity epidemic" is going to be the gift that keeps giving, because you can't resolve an epidemic if it's never clearly defined - more and more things like soda taxes and micromanagement of food purchases (like Michelle's program) will have to be implemented, for our own good of course.
