Two points:

1) It does more good than you think.  The first issue is raising awareness of the problem.

2) Many of those people may be calling/writing/whatever their congressmen.

I personally have written both my senators and my congresswoman on several issues.  It's mostly amounted to nothing.  I found out to get a decent response you have to push the envelope pretty damned far, and I'm not sure I want to try that again given the current culture in DC (and I'd note, that 1 senator and my congresswoman are ostensibly R's.)

You know, my newest dishwasher seems to handle dishes OK with the detergent I put in it.

I'm sure it's not as good as it used to be (not that I really remember that) but at the same time, I'm afraid to put any of the "good stuff" in there because I'm guessing this is like everything else.  Now that TSP has been removed, the internal parts of the dishwasher aren't as well made as they used to be and won't handle it so they'll just dissolve or something.

About half of my stuff (pots and pans and such) aren't dishwasher safe, so I do end up hand washing many many things.

Since it's just the wife and I, the dishwasher only gets run 2-3 times a week anyway, so I figure it'll probably last for a while.  Plus If I get another 3 years out of it, I can't really complain I suppose and the next model could be much much quieter. (My wife's parents is so quiet my wife has opened it not realizing it was on.)

I only tend to buy extended warranties on portable things when it comes with accident protection. (And even then, only recently full model laptops, not even tablets, phones, or netbooks.)

And I bought one for my TV a few years back.

Mostly because it was $69 on a $450 tv, and I knew that Pixel burnout in the first 2 years were reported by some people (and it covered said pixel problems.)  Before the warranty ended I did do a color check on the TV.

Heh, I have a front loading washer, and no warranty on it because it was like $400 or something and we couldn't afford it at the time (we had just bought the house and needed a washer/dryer fast).  Oh well, I guess I'll just pray. Dunno. F-I-L's mom worked at Sears back in the day and apparently retired from there so she has some sort of lifetime discount card, so all their appliances come from there.

(They give us crap because we won't use it. Mostly we won't use it because it requires dragging grandmother out to the store, putting it on her credit card then paying her back.  And frankly we don't find that worth the money we'd save.  Sometimes you need to spend a little extra money to avoid having your family have any power over you.)

No, after taxes and whatnot, I think the washer dryer combo ran about $1900-2k.

It's a really nice frontloader HE washer though. The second generation models are even more efficient than the 1st gens, which is nice because our monthly water bill hasn't been above $20 in a long time. (And around here sewer is tied directly to water, so keeping a low water bill helps, we're paying the standard minimum $35/month sewer).

I've honestly never had a problem with mine.

I'd probably have been scared if my parents didn't own one.

It does default to "warm" water (and we leave it there for the most part.)

Screw saving the planet, I love that I can fit a comforter in the thing without having to worry about it getting stuck on the agitator.

(You do have to run a clean cycle every 1-2 months with some bleach.)

Instead I scoured the thing for problems, found a section of the screen with burnt out pixels and a few problems with the harddrive.

Brand new laptop. This was back in the days when you got the original purchase price back.  So I got a new laptop, new warranty, docking bay, external hard drive enclosure (for transferring files from my old laptop easily) and a pack of DVD-Rs for $3. (The pack of DVD-Rs was to use all the money, this was back in the day when they were expensive.)

255 If you take a washer apart, you'd think they could only get about $200 for one...there's not much there; a couple of valves, a small pump and a small motor.

Common failure - makes noise, no turny - a shear pin has probably sheared.  Happens a lot when something, like sneakers, jams an agitator. 

Leaking - bad seal.  Unbalanced loads accelerate seal wear.

There's almost no failure on a washer that can't be fixed for about $30-$50 in parts.

Yeh, that's the one thing I don't like about mine. But it was only $400, so I can afford to take the queen comforter to be professionally cleaned once in a while.

Cleaning cycle every few months, no problem.

(On this one I do drain it twice a year to look for things in the pump filter.  But that's only because we've found earrings and such in there before and I really don't want them to clog it up.  Of course draining is also really easy in an unfinished basement, remove stopper, drain onto floor, water goes down the floor drain.)

I always bought the top of the line top loaders and they were always getting off balance, etc. So I replaced them with front loaders, but, I skipped getting the drawer stands Then when my Mom died, as part of my share of her household things, I took her new front loaders with the drawers. OMG, the drawers are great, I am 5'6", so I am average, not short, but, not bending and twisting to get clothes from washer to dryer is fabulous!

Plus formerly deployed military personnel with clearance who need jobs after they come back.

The person who did [redacted] clearance investigation was a retired FBI agent or some such who did it to keep making money.

Trust me there are lots of people with clearances capable of doing these jobs who could be tapped for the right price (and I doubt it'd be an excessive price by any stretch.)

A good toe in the water intro is to never put something to the curb without having taken it apart to try and figure out how it worked.  IOW, just observe dead shit for a while.  That will teach you a lot about how things fail, common failure modes.  What you'll learn about shoddy designs and questionable material selections is fascinating.

Hell when I filled out an application for Heritage's job bank, one of the questions it asked me was "do you have a clearance and if so, what level."

Clearances are a sort of currency up in the swamp. (No so much here in flyover apparently.)

But the idea that it's any sort of "super barrier" is baloney. 800k Americans with a clearance (and that number is off the top of my head, that may just be TS people.)

There are plenty of people who could be hired to do investigations for less than you think. I'm not sure that's a barrier to a new company being formed.

Now the fact that the company was started by government workers who used to do the job directly for the government, yeah that may be part of the problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong, there. If they are, then they're like the Price Waterhouse Cooper of the Government. Now, PWC (tries to) only hires the best and brightest in the accounting and information-security/privacy world. That's kind of their niche. If that's what USIS does, and if doing that for the US Government requires security clearance, the overlap of "best and brightest in accounting and information-security/privacy" and "has active security clearance" may be fairly small. I'm sure there are tons of people in the US Government and just out of the military who have security clearance and would love jobs. I'm just not sure their specific skill-sets also overlap with what USIS does. And, again, I could be wrong on all counts here- being correct is not my point. My point is simply that logical explanations for why one company would have 45% of all the contracts do exist. Mine was merely one hypothetical example. Halliburton is another (concrete) example.

I'm listed on 2 people's Secret forms as a reference.  Never been called once.

Meanwhile, I still have scars from going though my wife's original TS review.  We honestly thought we were going to have problems when her mom gave entirely wrong information about..well..my wife's entire life. I think at one point in the story my wife had run away to California or something.

The 2 years she was in Omaha getting her masters, yeah M-I-L told the guy "I don't think that happened."

Thankfully, the investigator understood that brain damage does that to a person.

Ironically the investigator couldn't get into 2 places to interview 2 of her references.

I (at the time) worked in a super secure BSL-3 building. And another reference worked for a Defense contractor who had had a bomb threat that morning.  Irony I suppose that the TS investigator couldn't set foot in or near those buildings

Look at the manufacturer's plate on the back for its power consumption.  Some of those old TV's are freaking heaters, where an equivalent size LED model will pull well under $100W, *and* be usable as a computer monitor.

I resisted the large and flat screen shit through the LCD and Plasma era, because they were heaters too, but the LED tech got me to ditch all the tubes around the house.

Okay- so that removes part of it. But then you're talking about people who have to have high enough clearance themselves to vet others for clearance. The overlap pool increases, but the overall pool (total people with high enough clearance) decreases. So I don't think that really invalidates my whole scenario (which: remember, is just a hypothetical to point out that we may be a bit early on this particular bit of hyperventilating), though it does punch one (relatively small, IMO) hole in it.

Front loading machines were well known for being easy on fabric, and for lower water and detergent use, in the nineteen-fifties.

I make no defense of current appliance design. Like everything made for mass markets, materials have cheapened in many instances. But there is nothing PETAhippy or Euro in the front-loader design. South Bend, WWII.

I might be alone in feeling this way but it always pisses me the fuck off when the enneffell has a fly-over by military jets during the Super Bowl.  The state needs to be hands off when it comes to sports otherwise shit like this becomes possible.

My point is that Lebron is one of those "filthy 1%-ers" who could, if he chose to live in modest luxury (instead of gaudy opulence) and shepherded his money properly, pay the combined medical bills of several families for the rest of his life. Yet he wants to take money from me (at the point of a gun) and simultaneously give me worse health care.

Yup.  They blow it all on stupid shit, and ten years later we're paying for their knee replacements with Medicaid (and not a word from the "why should we pay for your poor lifestyle choices" crowd, unlike when fat people need an antibiotic or preemies need an isolette, and everyone goes apeshit about "wasting healthcare dollars on people who doesn't deserve it").
