Occasional guestblogger Ben Domenech linked this old "Libertarian Purity Test" on Twitter last night, which provided a couple amusing hours of discussion. I (and others) were interested to discover just how wide the range of outcomes within the GOP blogosphere and twitterverse.
Among the cobs, I scored a 65. JohnE scored a 68. Andy scored a 56. Fairly close together.
For comparison's sake, Adam Baldwin scored a 73. Kathleen McKinley, who commented here years ago as RightwingSparkle before going on to blogospheric success of her own, scored an 82. Domenech himself scored a 92.
On the low end, John Gabriel, who joined us for the podcast two weeks ago, scored a 41. Guestblogger Ben Howe, of Red State, scored a 31. And Townhall blogger and radio host Guy Benson scored a 26.
Domenech said he's going to tally last night's responses and share the results.

I wonder how my brother would score on that test--he's registered R, a big Luap Nor fan, but also the union rep for his public school.
I'm thinking the scale they use for grading is a bit off. There's a lot of difference between 50s and 80s on that test--if I'd thrown the military and immigration law under the bus I probably would have jumped another 20 points.

I watched the afternoon session of the Zimmerman trial yesterday, caught them finishing up with "DD", of the wrap around throat pouch, then through three, I think, further witnesses before recessing for the day. So far, I don't get what the prosecution is trying to prove with their own witnesses. 'DD's credibility has been demolished, thanks in no small part to the overzealous prosecution team. The remaining witnesses have offered up testimony that matches Zimmerman's statements to the police immediately after the shooting.
With the exception of the one witness that claims to have heard three separate shots, and placed Zim, and Trayvon in positions that would have resulted in Trayvon being shot in the back.
The jury was shown pictures of Z's bloodied face, and the back of his head....compared to a few days ago when they were shown pictures of the crime scene, and Trayvon, who didn't have a mark on him, (other than a bullet wound to his chest).
Unless the prosecution has some heavy gun star witnesses yet to take the stand, they're going to lose this case spectacularly. Not that it matters....the feds are waiting in the wings to snatch up the killer of TFG's son, and will make a big show of trying him on whatever charges they can drum up....even if all they can stick him with is 'lying to investigators', which is the only reason Martha Stewart ever saw the inside of a prison.

OK, another Crawford story. I've told this before, too, but with the caveat that it's only a rumor: there was a Hollywood brothel nicknamed "Mae's" which specialized in women who were doubles for popular stars of the day, including Claudette Colbert (guys had a thing for It Happened One Night, obviously) and Shirley Temple (who was always asked to suck lollipops, IYKWIM).

Yes and no. I've met Dee-Dees of multiple races/ethnicity. If the gubmint provides all food, money, and housing to the single mother/grandmother who raises you, and no one ever holds you accountable for your actions/inactions, then you get the entitled wastes of space. Personally, I believe the question was worded wrong. "Decriminalize" pot growing/selling at the federal level. My libertarian bent is mostly against the usurpation of powers by the federal government. The feds have taken on way too much. It is not within the jurisdiction of the feds to legalize or criminalize pot. It should be up to each state.

Early America didn't have paid teachers in the the manner they are today. The locals got together and built a schoolhouse, and then found a teacher who was willing to work for contributions from the community. Being a teacher used to be a calling, not a 9-3 "job".
The rural town I grew up in had an all volunteer fire department and ambulance. Its still that way today.
The policeman was volunteer too, and moonlighted driving a schoolbus. If additional people were needed, some residents would be rounded up and deputized.
All the properties in town had wells and septic systems.

She is an actual living breathing result of the undereducated culture and school system that we are allowing to take over larger and larger chunks of the fabric of our society.
And perhaps it is a good thing to have her up there and highly visible for all to see.
And just maybe, someone will ask themselves how we as a culture have allowed this system to churn out DeeDee's for years, without ever being held accountable for it.

Actually, that part is true. I completely believe that she's using it as a racist term, but in Florida, cowboys back in the 1700's used to be called crackers because of them cracking their whips driving the herds. I went to an old ranch outside of Poinciana a couple of years ago, and that's the way that it was explained to me. Florida actually did have a booming ranching business way back in the day.

On student loans.
Actually the system is broke as all shit. This is a "normal" rate on student loans by any stretch. It's legislated at 6.8% which is as stupid as legislating it at 2.3%
It should just float with the market, maybe with a cap around 10% (maybe.)
but that's crazy.
And in either case, fuck the current crop of students. You can only consolidate once, and I had to consolidate the last time this happened in 2007, so I'm already paying 6.8% with no relief from congress, so pardon me if I don't feel bad.

Granted it'd be entirely unsecure credit, but current laws preventing discharge should make it enticing enough for banks. (Although those probably need to be modified.)

Reliance on automatic excommunication is, I think one of the things that's bringing down the Catholic Church right now.
I recognize it's not a *new* doctrine, but it seems like the people in the red hats treat it as the only doctrine these days. I wish we'd go through the trouble of actually excommunicating a few people every now and then (Some would probably tell me I'd be high on that list, but meh.)

I have a professor who declares that Anarcho-capitalism is in fact a paradox that cannot exist.
He tries to explain it, but it's in the weeds philosophically so I don't quite get it.
Something about the fact that it predicates the existence of some form of valuation (currency) which is contra to the anarcho point. (Bartering may work on a small scale, but it'd be pretty hard to build anything beyond a small community based on that, which is why we abandoned it so early in our development.)

During my senior year, I worked in my college's financial aid department. Basic stuff, like answering phones, filing, etc etc.
There was this AA/black guy that I knew because he dated a friend of mine our freshman year. He was always a slacker, a clown. Anyway, he dropped out halfway through second semester freshman year.
Well, upon review of his file, I found out that his education was being mostly subsidized by some NAACP fund. The rest was a grant through the college for "diversity" purposes (This was a very white, private college) Basically, he had no out of pocket expenses. Well, as it was, this NAACP apparently didn't get the memo three years prior that he was no longer enrolled, and they had been paying for like 80% of his education for the entire 4 years.
Get this. His high school GPA was somewhere in the 2.5 or lower range. And, his 1st semester of college GPA was like 0.8. I am not kidding. I found the paperwork that the college sent them, informing him of his GPA progress (or lack thereof) And they STILL paid for his education. The dude was failing miserably, and the NAACP was shelling out 15 grand a year for him anyway.
Anyway, one thing I can say about federal loans...I dislike a lot of it. I think it is a waste sometimes. But, the one thing I can say about federal loans, is there is a limit, per student. There is a max amount. And, it is fair and equal. They don't look at race or gender or anything like that. If you are a student, you get x amount of dollars. Period.
I fear that if student loans were to get privatized, or whatever, my fear is that you are looking at a lot of messed up red tape. A lot of money getting mismanaged. Possibly, even MORE people getting into college that should be there. And, of course, the discrimination that could come with privatized loans.

I scored 50, which coincidentally happens to be my IQ. On a good day.
The flaw in the test was that many of the questions were all or nothing. For example, there is a good deal of difference between licensing plumbers and licensing brain surgeons. Still, it was a pretty good test.

I have a friend who claims he wants mere anarchy loosed on the world.
His sole defense, a 6 shooter revolver that he only had to purchase because he's a security guard at the local university.
I keep explaining "you won't survive very long in anarchy. For all your talk, you're a product of an urban/suburban environment, and I, unshackled at that point of morality, can and will shoot you."
I also told him that should mere anarchy be released, I will go to his house first, dispatch him to make my point and then move on. (I don't keep tons of ammo around, I imagine I wouldn't want to live very long in a constant state of war anyway.)

And don't forget the political motivation behind the Zimmerman trial - Obama waded in on a capital case and in no small part greenlighted the persecution that has followed. Lucky for him he's a Democrat, but unlucky for Zimmerman, who would have an open-and-shut mistrial case if Obama was a Republican.
