Iowahawk found something from last month that, well, let's say it's right in line with the NOM thing Ace posted yesterday: EPA acknowledged releasing personal details on farmers to environmental groups. Just a coincidence, surely.

Aurora shooter James Holmes pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity yesterday. Next comes the psych eval and, after that, a jury trial.

President Obama's favorables are headed back down to where they were during the Shellacking of 2010. They were also that low during the special election of Sen. Scott Brown.

There's a new 15-minute featurette on Man of Steel. Really looking forward to this movie.

Morning, Horde.  While weÂ’re waiting for Vic, letÂ’s talk Hollywood.

 

 

IÂ’ve just picked up an interesting (if densely written) book called Hollywood Before Glamour: Fashion in American Silent Film.  It reads more like a doctoral thesis than a film book, so I wouldnÂ’t recommend it to the newbie.  But since I have a thing about 1910s fashion, itÂ’s right up my alley.  So with that, here are three short silent stories:

 

 

First, we visit the legendary director D.W. Griffith.  He was famous for not using a shooting script, keeping the entire story in his head.  But at the same time, he knew exactly the performance he wanted from his actors and wasnÂ’t above pushing them aside to act a scene the way he wanted them to do it.  Of course, at other times, he simply told them what to do – one day, while directing Dorothy Gish in a light romantic comedy, he said,“Now, honey, when you open that telegram and learn that your husbandÂ’s coming back to you, you get so excited that you pee a ring around yourself.”

 

 

Lewis J. Selznick, the father of director / producer David O. And finally, letÂ’s take a quick trip to 1924, to watch the Aileen Pringle movie Three Weeks.  Adapted from the Elinor Glyn* story about a queen who runs off to spend three weeks of passion with a titled Englishman, the movie drew good crowds and excellent reviews. . .except from the Deaf and Dumb Society, who noticed something that had escaped other viewers.  In one scene, when co-star Conrad Nagle picks her up with a tender look on his face, her lips are saying, “If you drop me, you cocksucker, IÂ’ll break your neck!”

You can't say, "I killed that man because it looked like he was going to beat his wife, and I knew he'd beat her in the past" (however justified such a killing might be). There has to be the imminent danger: "I killed him because he was beating his wife, and I feared for her life." So... he's probably not going to get to present that "defense" at all. But it would be really funny if he did.

Aside for the imminent part, I would also note that this fails any sort of test of the "Double Effect" (which although being a Catholic Principle, is used heavily in US law.)

If folks left or right think these folks are going to be told to just live with the double standards and contempt because brute political force demands it, because elites and academics and the press despise them, well, I'll tell you exactly what I saw yesterday-- The *literal* descendants of the Minutemen, reasonable in the mass. My guess is that they don't take the double standards forever, especially if the system clearly tries to make wrong right because the system has the votes to do so, because it is not in their blood to do so. They'll stand for those rights. These people don't care about the narrative at the end of tne day. They aren't calculating politicos. They are not going to trim the way a pol does because the WaPo is out to get him. They are a significant portion of the middle class, they are not being respected by their national government, certainly not by our national institutions, and they have a right to object. The press can intimidate politicos all it wants. It can't intimidate these folks, because they are not going to surrender all sense of self-worth and dignity because of the demands of the New York Times. They can't. They simply do not believe what the Left believes, they have an *absolute* right to do so, and in many ways they are far more "normal", in the mass. These are bulwarks of a society. Not the only ones, but they are bulwarks in their own right, and they know it. They simply are not going to live by the rules of politics as politicians live by it. Voter suppression tactics as used against Republican elected officials ("overreach") is simply going to make these more common folks really start thinking hard when it is used against them. The systemic bias of outright double standards we have right now is simply only going to infuriate these folks even more and drive them to greater action. And then...who knows. Who knows.

My older brother was a one in 10,000,000 athlete - in 1960 (without roids) at a body size of 5'11" and a weight of 185 he benched 315. He also ran a 5:00 flat mile and took a silver medal in the AAU nationals in the novice devision on the high bar.  Today that kind of power to weight ratio wouldn't get you anywhere near the field in any sort of sport - even at the college level - let alone at the pro level.

In the 1950's Steve Reeves was an absolute genetic freak - maybe one person in a billion could look like him from weight lifting. Today he wouldn't get near the platform in a state level body building contest - hell there are guys on your local swat team that big.

Do you think that human genetics - which has held pretty steady for 100,000 years has suddenly changed in the last 60 years? Sorry, steroids are everywhere - even at the high school level.

If that's aimed at me you couldn't be more wrong on where I'm coming from.  I lived through everything that was going on at the time and had the ability to filter out the lefty horseshit.  Nixon expanded government just as fucking much as the commiecrats did.  And he was a fucking retard on the economy, continuing the inflation that LBJ started.  Yes he was president at a time when everything was going to hell.  And if you noted, I pointed out that Saint JFK's piece of shit father helped steal the election in 1960 away from him.  But don't let how fucked up his enemies were con you into thinking he was some poor misunderstood genius.  Other than trying to win the war in Viet Nam honorably (particularly given the fucking mess that JFK and LBJ left him with; not to mention a gutless Congress) and opening the door to relations with China I can't think of a single positive thing he did.
