Happy July.

More on the enormous protests in Egypt. "At one point, army helicopters flew over Tahrir Square and dropped Egyptian flags, to cheers from the anti-Morsi crowd."

Ecuador's president Rafael Correa sours on Snowden. "He said the Ecuadorean consul in London committed 'a serious error' by not consulting officials in Ecuador's capital when the consul issued a letter of safe passage for Snowden. He said the consul would be punished, although he didn't specify how."

19 firefighters are dead in the Yarnell Hill wildfire. The fire started Friday after a lighting strike. Liberals, naturally, are already blaming global warming.

Ed Driscoll at PJMedia has an interesting column and book review about Hollywood's "New Abnormal."

And finally, following up on the Libertarian Purity Test that we talked about on Friday, Ben Domenech compiled the tweets on it and posted an interesting graphic. That's the range for his mostly right-leaning Twitter followers. I'd be interested to know if the Left has similar variation.

1 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Monday, July 01, 2013.  On this day in 1943 FDR began the practice of income tax withholding.  Recall that originally the income tax was a small amount and virtually only on the wealthy with the highest rate category being only 7% (sales tax in most localities is now higher than that).  FDR through his policy of “we will tax and tax and tax and spend and spend and spend and remain in office forever” greatly increased taxes to pay for his socialist programs.  The highest rate eventually reached 91%.  This doesnÂ’t even count the hidden inflation tax caused by him nationalizing gold and printing dollars out the gazzoo. (Sound familiar?)

5 Democrats are still whining about the increase in interest rates on Stafford loans. Meanwhile Republicans are willing to compromise and go with the Obama plan, which ties the interest rates to the financial markets.  How about this compromise; eliminate the loans all together and then students will not have to worry about the rates.  ThatÂ’s my compromise.   See, everyone gets something.

6 I covered this yesterday in a post based on a statement made by Fox News on TV.  House leadership is getting ready to sell us out on the amnesty bill.  Conservative members have begged Boner to not bring any bill to the floor to avoid the joint committee.  The leadership says they will bring a House bill to the floor for a vote.  Which means ultimately it will go to a joint committee in which Boner will sell us out for another bag of magic beans and an assfucking w/o a reach-around.

7 You folks with heart conditions make sure you have taken your meds this morning before reading this.

The terrorists still at GITMO because they are the worst of the worst got too fat on the good eats prepared in the GITMO kitchens.  So the PC assholes running the military ordered treadmills for the gym so they could work out.  That is bad enough, but the assholes now refuse to use them because they were made in the US by infidels.

So the US is now replacing them with Muzzie made treadmills. And here is the other rub, they are still getting fat while on this HUNGER STRIKE!  How in the shit is that happening?  We need to take ALL of these SOBs out and line them up against a wall and shoot them.  But they are Obama buddies so that will never happen.

21 Everything tends to be bigger in the South — including food insecurity.

Snip

According to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Economic Research Service

That is the lead to the story on idiotic BS Democrat talking point meme that has been repeated often in the past and has been revived recently.  It is all over the news now indicating that “Journalist” may be gone but it is still around, just hidden better.  The way the story went in the past was that the urban poor could not afford “good” food and had to buy junk food and “fast food” because it is cheaper.  Not one shred of real evidence to back this up but they keep repeating it.   Even before food stamps it was very easy to go down and buy a bag of rice, a one pound bag of dried red beans, and a ham hock to make red beans and rice.  It is also extremely cheap.  It just requires you to do some work rather than run down to the burger max and pig out on triple decker maxi-burgers and fries with a chemshake.

The new meme is unemployment, poverty, which doesnÂ’t count any government support, and food deserts which they define as an area that is more than a mile away from a grocery store.  From that stupid definition I live in a damn food desert.   And here is the rub on children going hungry.  My local school district provides THREE meals a day to “poor” children, EVEN.DURING.THE.SUMMER.  And this is in addition to food stamps .  And speaking of food stamps, is it a coincidence that this stupid bull shit is coming out all across the news wires when the Republicans in the House are blocking the stupid Senate food stamp bill with “farm” in its title?  I donÂ’t think so.

And here is the ultimate irony; headline right next to the one about food insecurity:

Once a bill comes out of the Senate and is passed, if the House votes on it supposedly it invokes a joint committee meet. (at least that is what one of the Fox pundits say).

If the House does not vote on it but submits a bill of their own it goes to joint committee (from Fox also)

If the House simply sits on the Senate bill and does nothing then no committee.  That is what Gowdey and Mulvaney were both calling for originally.  But it looks like that may have changed.

The Hispanics will break along cultural and subcultural lines, the whites are split, Asians split, Amerinds split......

but African-Americans are only split in that some of them are like an odd amoeba that subdivides into 6 people all voting D and then like magic the 6 people becomes one at Midnight on election night....

we're already through the looking glass and an Extra Constitutional Post Representative Republic why not try paying the danegeld...?

Boehner thinks I'm as stupid as Jeantel and don't grasp he's selling us out....

I'm certain he's gonna get hispanic votes to make up for the 100% of the people I know in HIS district I spoke with yesterday feeling personally betrayed.

No really...

Vic I just don't think the split will happen fast enough and like the original Idiot from Illinois on the matter Barky will just import "newer better Americans" from Dureka Durka in lieu of Europe as shock troops.

Evidently people born 3 generations after the end of slavery still owe something...

I don't agree with it but there it is.

I respect Allen West, I thought the idea that Americans were owed money for being born was anathema to our national ideals.  Turns out I was in error.  Cut the check...hell it's not like it'd be any more idiotic than Ogabe nuking 33% of electric generation at a sitting....

Just ask openly "a lot of Amewricans seem to think they are owed a middle class or better existence just for showing up...how much does the check need to be or are you looking for an annuity indexed to inflation folks?"

Better to jump both feet in to Marxist fucktardery than playing this long drawn out slow boil.

Even as a Green Party politician [executive committee], I wasnÂ’t impressed with Mr. ObamaÂ’s focus on fighting global warming. While his renewed enthusiasm is appreciated, it served as a distraction from the criticism he is currently facing for allowing invasive state surveillance. He cannot simply change the subject.

Allen West supported overt fraud that Mr Magoo could have seen was fraud ma'am.

I know let's make him PotUS, I'm certain that's what we need in a CinC facing a partisan non-partisan civil service.

I respect him, I'd back him more than Rubio for the reasons alluded to, but he was if I recall correctly the only GOPer of national name recognized prestige who backed Pigford.

I am not offering an argument beyond, the base is about to be shat on(including me). In deciding that the base is once again the outhouse of the nation the GOP brain trust is doing their best to make 2006 look like the GOP glory days.  That genius move means that Nancy Pelosi is going to in all likelihood get power back and Emperor Momjeans will end his reign(God willing) as he started it with total unaccountable power.

I predicted the misuse of IRS back in 2008, I posted on the likelihood that intel assets authorized for foreign use would be aimed inward in 2009.

I have a sad habit of often being right on politics, what's my secret?

I wargame the absolute worst, most treacherous, and stupidly venal likely path that the GOP and Democrats would each desire and then move one step further towards "duh"....

It seldom lets me down.

They list the specific votes in the details. Fairly uncontroversial, I thought.

Problems include the limited set of votes and only counting final votes, so the cloture/final pivot doesn't get captured. Plus the metric is pretty easily gamed in election years, hence Mccain's 100%  in 2010.

The trouble with those ratings is that if they weigh votes on very important issues the same as they do piddley shit stuff, they become meaningless.  For example, as bad as West's Pigford vote was, I don't see it being as bad long term for the country as what Toomey did on gun control or Rubio on shamnesty.  Those have long term consequences.  As it is, as bad as I think Toomey fucked up on that issue I'd still consider him less of a sell out than Rubio, who is just incredibly self destructive on this immigration nonsense.  And if they weigh votes, different people would have different criteria; what I stated above is just my thinking.

The pick out a number of bills each voting year as ones that are important to "Conservatives" (not just the GOP).  The they measure each critter on how they vote on those bills selected.

It is not a be all because there is no one system that can really be used to ultimately call a politician a conservative good guy.  For example Graham usually averages around 90 and he is one of the biggest RINOs in the Senate.  But he and some other RINOs are able to do this by gaming the system.  They do stuff like trade votes, vote yes on conservative bills they  know will be defeated (or vice-versa), and vote for cloture and then no on the bill knowing that it will pass.

However lower scores (<90) have been shown to be reliable in showing RINO status.  I consider < 50 as DIABLO.

199 162 Dept of Accuracy,

Pretty much.  I did post on those things, I even did so in more serious styled post of mine here.  I wish I had saved links to them.

"You're paranoid" , "Bush did it too", "The voters will punish him", "the media won't be able to protect him", and on and on I've heard.

I'm not looking to be treated like the Oracle of Delphi, I don't want "wow you nailed that one...Jugears set up a police state pretty well", and in all likeihood I'm not going to get what I most desperately wanted which was a GOP willing to do and Gingrich did in the 1988-1994 era and confront the media bias and liberal idiocy with an intelligent defense of Capitalism and a reduction in the welfare state.

Do I think we're going to be smart enough to push for a split and make it stick?

Nope. Not really.

Do I think the Democrats are going to be empowered post Amnesty to alter the Bill of Rights via amendatory process if they can be bothered to go through form?

Yup, I sure do.  The funny thing is they will not really be representing the %age of population needed to do so but the GOP will have said forcefully enough to a good portion of the American people "fuck you sit down and shut up the Chamber of Commerce wants X."

I'm pretty certain that enough of us will sit out or go third party that the democrats will get their way for the rest of my life.

I probably feel like a Calvin Coolidge Republican who was 18 when he voted for President Coolidge felt as he watched the democrats grab power and hold on to it for ~54 years in a row in the House.  The difference is in all likelihood that person knew sooner or later the pendulum would likely swing back.  It is my reasoned estimation it will not.

The New Dealers wanted to "fix" an America they loved.

The Ogabe Dealers want to "fix" an America they loathe.

I also hate Target's commercials in Spanish. Target has lost me for good.

You must be a lawyer to argue before the Supreme Court.

Thought that already was the case? It wasn't until Monday, when the Supreme Court revised its 80-page rule book for the first time since 2010.

The update covers items such as filing deadlines but also adds Rule 28.8, which requires anyone arguing before the court to be a lawyer. The high court says the new rule simply codifies a "long-standing practice of the court."

A nonlawyer hasn't argued before the justices in more than three decades, though not for a lack of trying. A magazine publisher, entrepreneur and paralegal-in-training asked but were turned down, the paralegal-in-training the past year.

205 19 firefighters are dead in the Yarnell Hill wildfire. The fire started Friday after a lighting strike. Liberals, naturally, are already blaming global warming. # RIP to the hot shot firemen. Condolences to their families. And sympathy for families displaced by the fires. Liberals are the last to actually shell out for charity, thinking the word means another opportunity to scam the system for their own profit. "Charity" for themselves, they being the most needy and clingy of all. Liberals are among the land developers making real estate deals out of the desert, and would never accept any responsibility, much less guilt, for encouraging a higher density human population than the ecosystem can support. Namely, WATER. Drought is the annual summer occurrence in AZ, a tinderbox nearly all year. If lightening started the wildfire, was there no rain, a dry electrical storm? Meanwhile, where's the aerial map of the wildfire? If the Liberals want to argue man-made global phenomena, would they attack responses to their demands, such as politicians' abuse of scientific measures to "cure" global warming on demand, seeding clouds, etc., especially if it were Liberals' property and lives being consumed by wildfires?

Pigford has never been anything other than a fraud cooked up by the CBC and that scrunt that is suing BB.  She and a bunch of toadies sued the Dep of Agr because supposedly they discriminated against black farmers.  Holder then in the DOJ settled "out of court" and congress allocated some money to pay out a settlement.

After all the money was used up by paying more black farmers than ever existed in the US at any one time they ginned up Pigford II.  That was uniformly opposed by almost all Republicans because they knew it was a fraud and some even said this on the floor. Documented cases of fraud were referenced for people collecting who were obviously NOT farmers.

If I remember correctly the vote for Pigford II settlement money was held in the infamous Dec lame duck session from Hell in late 2009.

249 I blame the US government and the watermelons who refuse to allow proper management of the forests and growth. The US Forest Service has pursued a policy of "suppression*" for far too long. To complicate matters, the Asian Pine Beetle has been moving from east to west, destroying coniferous trees for the past decade. This leaves millions of board feet of lumber standing dead, the most volatile tinder in the forest. It's also interesting to note, the west is sweltering because of a dip in the jet stream, leaving the mid-west feeling more like Canada than Florida. I rode my bike yesterday here in St. Louis, I got a bit chilly on the ride. Upper 60's and 70's. Typically this time of year it's mid-90's w/90% humidity. *supression leaves dead timber and duff to decompose naturally, and small fires, that would normally balance things out, are suppressed until they turn into huge events.

America has people on free food programs who are so fat that they can barely move--including children. We advertise food stamps in Mexico, for goodness sake. So if people are still hungry, shouldn't we ask why that is so? Is it fixable with the many programs and charities in place? It's like clean water in Africa, nothing has worked so far, and the organizations involved are scrambling to understand why?

307 Keep in mind that these assholes are in direct violation of the laws of war and the Geneva Convention and thus can be shot. Posted by: Vic Sick. Isn't it? Conversely, our politicians have disavowed our own military whose rights according to the "old" laws of war and Geneva Convention are lost. Evidently, without a declaration of war, our own military personnel taken prisoner have no claim as prisoners of war, either. I was watching the "War Zone" documentary series produced after WWII that made our current state of affairs shocking. The USA has not declared war, and has through its interventionist advancement of wars via "policy", made itself the aggressor nation. For whatever reason, right or wrong, the US is behaving as the NAZI German Third Reich did, attacking nations without declarations of war, with expansionist motivations setting up puppet governments (without success, if stability were the point of involvement). The traditional US war policy and policy prosecuting war criminals after victory in 1945 would find the US today guilty. Sickening contrast. There is no logical thing as a war against a tactic. An illogical war has no means of reaching a victory unless such is self perpetuation of warfare, such as our current never-ending wars. When such a war-against-tactic "is" the tactic, that's insane. As the US advances terrorism globally for corporatist profit, spreading destabilization to create greater opportunity to exploit humanity, the guilt of warmongering must be recognized for all that it is. Alongside the sacrifice of humanity, include our own system of Constitutional Governance, our own sensibilities. Yes, brutality must be abutted. And until our own government functions constitutionally, we're in a self-defeating cycle of errors in judgment with no end in sight. At the moment, our own federal government officials, via authoritarian policy and comprehensive legislative reform packages, pose vastly greater immediate threats against the US citizenry than do foreign terrorists. But so long as we fall for the propaganda, we will continue as if the Third Reich. Immediately, US citizenry must prevent our politicians from throwing our military into Syria. As repeatedly explicated in The Air Force Magazine articles, "Syria Is Not Libya." Even if it were, our Air Force is currently without the necessities to carry out a repetition of its bombing flights as conducted in Libya. The only realistic expectation of our military engagement against Syria is a massive global FUBAR with worse outcomes for America than anyone will admit. It won't happen in one fell swoop, but Little Bighorn pride before the fall is definitely worth avoiding.

Linguists describe dialects, their words and grammar. They would say someone is speaking correct grammar for her dialect, rather than say she's using poor Standard English grammar.

It has nothing to do with social issues like needing to speak standard English for a job or while in court.

Mumbling and not being able to switch to a more standard dialect...those will set you back in life and it's not right to blame "speaking a dialect".

330 Unless Congress acts, interest rates for government subsidized student loans will double to 6.8% from 3.4% on July 1 (today). In May, House Republicans passed a bill that would index rates on new loans to the rate on 10-year Treasurys (currently about 2.6%), plus 2.5 percentage points, with an 8.5% cap. But with little Democratic support in the Senate, that bill is dead in the water.

Context is required. For instance (and Mama AJ pointed this out a little), in the 'hood, among others of her subculture (like it or not: it exists), she's probably easily understood. That's "how they talk." If you were to go down into the 'hood and try to talk to people like her in that environment, and then complained about her speech, you would be the one in the wrong- not her. Just as you would be the one in the wrong if you went to France and complained that everyone was speaking French. Or (for a more comparable example), if you went to Scotland and complained that you couldn't understand anyone because of their accents. On the other hand, it is incumbent upon the subculture to ensure that its members are also at least marginally fluent in the dominant language/dialect. So if she's dealing with the police, or her school, or the court, or any number of other things, and she still speaks like that, that's on her.

But how we got here is easy- no one was willing to make hard decisions. Starting at least as far back as Vietnam (and possibly Korea), we were unwilling to "go for the jugular" in war. At the same time, people were unwilling to make hard decisions at home- or, at least, were unwilling to "do the hard thing." Part of Socialism's Siren call is that it's "easy." You don't have to lift a finger, you don't have to trouble yourself at all. On the military front, the "easy" choice is what's biting us in the ME. Iraq was reasonably successful as long as we stayed. Afghanistan has always been a mess. Don't get me started on Egypt and Libya. In the first two cases we had a legitimate National Security reason to go to war- but we then should have prosecuted those wars as wars. Kill people. Break things. Leave. But that would be "mean" and "inhumane," and no one at the top wanted to be the one to take that flak.

343 Yes, America is allowed to lose a war if winning that war requires losing America.

America shouldn't lose wars like Vietnam because of stupid strategic decisions. However, if America goes into a war agreeing to strategic decisions that will certainly prevent it winning that war except by a f'in miracle, it pretty much deserves to lose.

At least in the Cold War days we could be honest about who our real enemy was. These days, it's the amorphous 'terror' monster! It could appear and strike anywhere, including within America!

Moral Equivalent of War Powers.

357 So if I were to go back 40-50 years, would I hear blacks 'in the hood' speak this way? You'd hear the beginnings of it, yes. Go back and read Chaucer in the Old English. We would be incomprehensible to him today. Similarly, he'd be incomprehensible to us. Languages that people actually speak are "living languages" and they will constantly develop new dialects and even spin off whole new languages quite organically. Remember that Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian all have their roots in Latin. At some point, those were all different dialects based largely on geography and culture.

364 True....but it progressed forward to a more comprehensible expression, not backwards. Not comprehensible to people back then. It's more comprehensible to you because you've spoken it all your life. But we make fun of it in other situations, too. About half of the jokes in the Redneck Comedy Tour were about the fact (or a result of it) that Southerners (especially from the "deep south") speak very differently than people on the East or West coasts. Like I said, take a vacation in Scotland. They speak "The Queen's English" in theory, but most Americans (per a Scottish friend of my wife) only seem able to understand every third word or so. The English don't fare particularly better with their Scot neighbors. And don't the Scots started on the Welsh. No, she should not have been speaking in that manner in the courtroom. That is a massive failure on her part, on the part of her parents, and the part of her teachers. But to claim that it's not *ever* a legitimate way for her to speak just ignores linguistic differences we take for granted.

367 Even calling Portuguese and French Latin or Romance languages is a stretch because of how far they have drifted. True. Now. And that's the point, really. At one point all of those languages were the same one. What this "dialect" issue really says is one about cultural division, not one about her speech at all. The balkanization of the US has started (started long ago really), and it will either be halted, or (among other things) we'll all be speaking different languages in the next 50 - 100 years (give or take a few decades).

Exactly.    All of us have ways of speaking   that vary depending on the audience.   With friends and family we use far looser language and more familiar expressions.      Hell,   just try explaining  half the memes     here at the HQ alone to anyone who's not familiar with the place and you'll find yourself in   trouble.

But we all also know that, when we're in a social or public setting,   there are standards of speech and behavior that    should be followed.   We adapt our behavior to those standards.   A southerner is always going to sound like a southerner, and a New Englander is always going to sound like a New Englander, but we all try to make ourselves understood when we're in mixed company.    That     Rachel   Jeantel could not even be bothered to do that while TESTIFYING IN COURT    is   an enormous reflection on her character and the character of those    who   (allegedly) raised and educated her.

387 The Libertarian Purity Test was/is stupid and pointless, and not a "test" in any serious way. Removing important context neither adds purity nor removes impurities; it CAN'T, given that the "impurities" are the complexity, the context and the facts of actually living life on a living planet alongside 7 billion other closely-related top predators with individual and competing agendas. The usefulness of libertarianism -- and it's beyond merely useful -- isn't that it's ever capable of emerging as any sort of governing view, because it's not about governance, rather it's about the opposite. It's usefulness is very much like the thought experiments that led to the importantly deeper understanding of quantum reality (which is, after all, the only true "reality" that exists; everything else is emergence, perception and illusion). But that value simply cannot be realized on 'gross' scale filled with platitudinous false choices. To validate the resort to libertarianism, you have to have an appreciation of the facts that's as finely-gauged as possible. That, for example, is how Scalia was able to attract the support of Kagan and other liberal (that is to say, 'realist') fellow SCOTUS members: he took a case involving technocratic intrusion and used libertarianism as a TOOL to reduce the nature of the intrusion to something that captured the actual impact on the individual. None of that's possible with grossly-smoothed-out choices; it distorts reality beyond the ability of libertarianism to be of any use as a tool.
