Happy Wednesday.

As rumored, the House GOP has decided to split the farm bill into an actual farm bill and a food stamps bill.

Illinois legislators overrode Gov. Pat Quinn's veto of a concealed carry law. Illinois was the last state in the nation that prohibited concealed carry.

Two House Dems propose to make U.S. moon landing sites national parks.

The Muslim Brotherhood rejects offer to join the new Egyptian government, denounces transition plan, and vows to continue the disruptions until Morsi is returned to power.

5 A couple of things from yesterday: a) The Israeli Air Force grounded its fleet of F-16's after reporting that one of their aircraft went down in the Mediterranean. b) A huge ammo dump in Syria blew up, including a whole shipment of the latest Russkie SAM missiles. Put those two together and it points to an Israeli air strike on Iran very soon. (the F-16 report could be a false flag).

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Just a quick observation today:

A movie studio can do almost anything in its attempt to groom an actor or actress; arrange for plastic surgery, insist on a diet, hire the finest in hairdressers, makeup artists and cameramen – but the one thing they cannot do is give someone the undefinable gift called “star quality.”  Why does an audience go wild for a brief glimpse of Rita Hayworth in Only Angels Have Wings, yet yawn at an entire movie starring Bella Darvi (a Darryl Zanuck project) or Vera Ralston (the obsession of Republic Pictures honcho Herbert Yates)?

There are many examples of stars “turning off” their essence in order to go incognito or try something for fun – the story of Charlie Chaplin coming in third in a Chaplin lookalike contest, for example* - but one most often told concerns Marilyn Monroe.

The location and friend with her change in the retelling, but the essence of the story is that Monroe and her friend were walking down a big city street, both completely unnoticed.  The friend marveled at that and wondered why no on recognized the actress.

“Because today IÂ’m Norma Jeane.  IÂ’m not Marilyn,” Monroe answered.  “Watch.”  And with that, Monroe did nothing more than straighten her posture and smile.  Instantly, the two were besieged with autograph seekers and had to duck into a store to get away.  Once inside and safe, Monroe stopped smiling, slouched a bit. . .and became anonymous again, walking through the store and out another door.

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Chaplin actually did have two lookalikes – his brother Sydney, who occasionally doubled for him, and an actor named Billy West, whose entire career was built on impersonating Chaplin.

Three former Target employees are suing the retail chain for racial discrimination, citing a document Target reportedly distributed to managers with reminders that not all Hispanic people eat tacos and burritos, dance to salsa or wear sombreros.

A Target spokeswoman released a statement saying, ‘It is never Target’s intent to offend our team members or guests and we apologize. The content of the document referenced is not representative of who Target is.

‘This document, which was used during conversations at one distribution center, was never part of any formal or company-wide training. We take accountability for its contents and are truly sorry.’

80 Thanks for the article on MM, MPP. I have been watching old movies with the spouse. The other night it was "Breakfast at Tiffanys" Audrey Hepburn is very lovelyand a good actress but she is totally miscast in that role. She's supposed to be a poor Southern girl?? Com'on! I read that Truman Capote didn't like AH"s performance and would have preferred his friend Marilyn Monroe in the role. I think she could have done it. She played a Southerner in "Bus Stop" didn't she? I understand her agent talked her out of it because Holly seems to be a high class escort and MM's agent thought that would damage her standing.

I didn't know that one -  thanks, J.J.!  I'm not really a fan of Grant, but he was always a class act.

One time he was eating dinner when a fan demanded an autograph (Grant didn't mind signing - in which he differed greatly from the odious Katherine Hepburn - but not while eating).  When Grant asked the fan to come back later, the fan demanded, "Who do you think you are?"

Grant answered, "Well, we both know who I am.  The question is, who are you, and why should I care?"

101 As the Science Channel recently detailed, if you believed in the science of the day as an ancient Greek, you were convinced that the liver circulated blood, instead of the heart, while also believing that the heart circulated “vital spirit.” Similarly, it took Copernicus and nearly 1,400 years after the un-fact to disabuse “science” of the second-century astronomer Ptolemy’s assertion that Earth is the center of the solar system. And even as late as the 19th century, doctors felt that washing their hands was unnecessary before surgery, since contagions were attributable to “bad air” and disease was a result of the imbalances of the four humors (blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile.) All of which is to say if you were a science-absolutist of the day, back in that day, you’d have a bit of yellow bile on your face now. And that’s just a small taste. You can say the same of everything from Maternal Impression (the belief that mothers’ thoughts create birth defects) to Spontaneous Generation to phrenology to Hollow Earth Theory.

I want it so bad I would go without food for months to get the set. Unfortunately if I did get the set, I would go without food for months. There is a downside, of course, Heinlein was a product of the times, with attitudes and beliefs common for that generation. Some people can't get past those imperfections.

..and the science is 'dated' as they say. Andre Norton is another favorite author, and if I started listing favorite authors and favorite works this would turn into a poorly written monograph.

Something I've noticed lately: the forecast text and icon will say rain or T-storms even when the percentage chance is as low as 30%.  (Below 30% they'll usually say scattered or isolated or something).  I'm fairly sure this is a change from previous practice, and it leads to entire weeks showing thunderstorms where no such thing actually happens.

So, bottom line, check the percentage chance of rain instead of the text/icon.

This goes much further tan Wickard in which the feds limited how much wheat a farmer could grow.  It actually orders farmers to GIVE a large portion of their crop to the government without compensation.

The court even said that it was an unconstitutional taking but took no action other than sending it back to the lower court.

208 Apparently, at 10:00 last night, the Zimmerman judge had a hearing on the Mystery Texts that the defense was able to find on Trayvon Martin's phone.  The ones about Trayvon's fighting history and gun acquisition activities.

The judge was leaning toward excluding these texts, on the grounds that the DEFENSE could not prove that Trayvon personally sent them.

That's insane, even for Judge John Goodman.  So, let the State argue that on cross-examination -- "Are you sure Trayvon sent these?"  And the defense gets to ask on rebuttal, "Is there any reason to think Trayvon didn't send these?"  And let the jury weigh the evidence.  Done.  Obviously.

Plus, there's the little problem of the State withholding the evidence for so long that the Defense didn't have time to send out an investigator to all of the recipients of the texts to determine that it was darling Trayvon who sent them.

She's really stretching to give the prosecution everything she can.

I keep thinking that there's no way this case will end in conviction, but then I remind myself that we're living in the Crazy Times.

The purpose is offer a sacrificial lamb up to the Race Riot crowd, and hope they're appeased. Unfortunately for the State, the sacrificial lamb doesn't particularly want to be sacrificed, and the jury may take his side. Everything that can be done to prevent that must be done. Lever guns are fine.  Lots of cash strapped people have one and a revolver in the same caliber.  357 mag is good as you can run cheap 38 special ammo out of it.  But if you plan on hunting go with a 44 mag or a rifle caliber like 30-30.

234 AllenG, a 357 levergun is one of best investments. For new guys I would recommend a skills/investment progression: 1. Single shot, break open 20g (H&R) 2. .22lr bolt action (Ruger 10/22, Savage, Marlin) 3. .357 Levergun (whatever you can find) 4. 12g pump (any) 4. 12g SemiAuto (Benelli M1 Super 90) 5. AR (by this point you should on your own ...) 6. 30-06 Bolt action

I've a Marlin 1894sc that matches up nicely with my Colt Trooper.  I luvs me some .357

Speaking about Tequila - originally, there were no words, but when the band ran through it prior to recording, producer   Joe Johnson  thought it needed a little extra and suggested that Danny Flores (the saxophonist and lead vocal for the Champs) say something at each break.

And Tequila started the trend for instrumentals with a spoken break; two of the least objectionable are Got A Match? by the Daddy-O's and Nee Nee Na Na No No Nu Nu by Dicky Doo and the Dont's.

251 The Defense doesn't have to "prove" anything. The Defense only has to posit reasonable scenarios. I would say that someone sending texts from his own phone was a "reasonable scenario."

Overall, yes.  This is an authentication question -- as to this particular evidence proffer, this idiot judge is making the Defense authenticate the texts in question as specifically coming from Trayvon.

The texts that were found on his phone.  The phone that was found in his pocket.  Unbelievable.

Yes, this is a show-trial. The purpose is offer a sacrificial lamb up to the Race Riot crowd, and hope they're appeased

It's a show trial being offered up to Obama and Holder

Remember when Fartbongo said if he had a son, he'd look like Trayvon?  Go watch the video from that little ass-nugget of a speech he gave.  In one rarely-mentioned tidbit, Obama says that he's tasked Holder with "looking into" this case.  A week later, the former (white male) career prosecutor had withdrawn from the case and charges were filed.

We have to hang this show trial around Obama's neck.  It's his doing, entirely.

252 Lots of cash strapped people have one and a revolver in the same caliber. 357 mag is good as you can run cheap 38 special ammo out of it. But if you plan on hunting go with a 44 mag or a rifle caliber like 30-30. Posted by: Johnnyreb Getting a good match between barrels and calibers is actually difficult, and I think a .357 is more then enough for anything with two or four legs in Texas. You can plink with .38spc, but get comfortable at range with a decent .357 load. Then go pig hunting - great all around practice.

This is an authentication question -- as to this particular evidence proffer, this idiot judge is making the Defense authenticate the texts in question as specifically coming from Trayvon. The texts that were found on his phone. The phone that was found in his pocket. Unbelievable. Not only all that but Martin had TWO levels of passwords protection to get into his msgs. The FDLE had the phone for a year and couldn't crack it. The defense person did get in. And yet the judge says 'any 7 year old could get in and send these msgs.' To which Don West replied, 'FDLE couldn't.'

That's not bad. I would add the caveat that, after the .22lr you should have a good idea of how well you shoot. If you're decent, go to the AR, if not-so then go to shotguns and pistols and get one good surplus bolt action, like an Enfield or even a Mosin. It may not ever become a hobby for the non-shootist newbie so why frustrate yourself unduly?

And that is why we should have slavery reparations.  Everybody who can show descent from slaves registers for a national lottery that gives away almost all federally owned land in 40 acre plots.

This accomplished two things:

1) It transfers millions of acres from the public sector into the private sector, including land containing oil, natural gas and low sulfur coal.  It also allows the government to lay off tens of thousands of government employees at the Department of the Interior and the Bureau of Land Management.

2) It creates a major wedge between two major blocks of the Democrat coalition - white environmentalists who will try to block the slavery reparations and if that fails they will try to prevent blacks from selling their mineral rights and getting rich vs. blacks who will want to sell their mineral rights to oil drillers, frackers and coal mining companies in order to get rich.
