Happy Monday.

The Fourth Circuit recently ruled against Liberty University's challenge to Obamacare. That's a bit disappointing, but it was a long-shot lawsuit, anyway. More interestingly, in so ruling, the Fourth Circuit undercut several of the Administration's arguments in related cases challenging the illegal tax credits that HHS created in the 34 states that haven't established Obamacare exchanges.

Despicable Me 2 led the box office again this weekend, bringing its haul to $230 million in its second week. Grown Ups 2 scored in its first weekend with $42.5 million. Monsters and mayhem actioner Pacific Rim did not meet expectations, drawing only $38 million. I'm trying to figure out what precisely is wrong with Pacific Rim; this sort of movie is usually right up my alley. But I had no desire at all to see the robots vs. monsters flick.

JK Rowling, who really has nothing to prove, has been unmasked as the author of a highly-praised crime novel.

163 years of telegram service came to an end yesterday in India.

In the words of Ray Donovan, where does he go to get his reputation back?

Seriously, I hope he finds the best, most bad-ass legal team in the country to nail those fuckers at NBC.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

IÂ’m glad Zimmerman was acquitted, but the poor guy needs a Horde fundraiser, because he canÂ’t live in Obamerica any more (which, actually, would be a fascinating question to ask him if this country had real reporters: are you still an Obama supporter after he basically called for you to be lynched?).

Today IÂ’ve got a Tallulah Bankhead story I found over the weekend:

IÂ’ve told you before about BankheadÂ’s reputation for sleeping with anyone at the drop of a hat. It so happens that a man was introduced to her one night at a Hollywood party. The two chatted for a while; then he decided to find out if the rumors of her perpetual horniness were true. When asked if he wanted another drink, he looked the actress in the eye and said, “Actually, IÂ’d like a little pussy.”

“Oh, darling, so would I,” Bankhead shot back. “MineÂ’s as big as my handbag!”

HereÂ’s a picture of her doing her best Bette Davis: http://tinyurl.com/ozfrfgt

Hope you all have a wonderful day.

38 Considering who's in the White House, who's at the head of the DoJ and the head of the Civil Rights Division, I fully expect laws to be twisted, flouted or newly created so they can nail George Zimmerman. If they can send Nakoula Nakoula to jail - still there - on a trumped-up charge, this is a piece of cake. In all seriousness, they are furious that their Stalinist show trial (which it was) failed. They will try and exact revenge on the jurors, witnesses and lawyers. And they are itching for another case like this so they can fix the verdict before the trial even begins. Evil does not rest.

What we have to remember is that millions of LIVs and NIVs actually believe all the "racial" shit being ginned up in the Zimmerman case. Their peers, their limited experience with reality, their churches, all tell them there must be Justice For Traytable. Even their president, for whom they voted -- and they would do that again -- is speaking out on behalf of the Poor Martyred Chile.

We know they're wrong, we know their worldview has been skewed by relentless teachers, media and what they hear at the Stop and Shop, but they don't. They are sincere in their lunacy.

Their "leaders" are mischievous race-baiters. But they are convinced of the correctness of their beliefs. That's what makes arguing for sanity so difficult.

92 See my comments at 38. The truth of the matter is if Trayvon never encountered Zimmerman that night, within 5 years he would have either a) wound up in jail/prison b) died of an OD or c) been murdered by one of his own.

Posted by: J.J. Sefton at July 15, 2013 07:25 AM (+98Gb)

Had Zimmerman been convicted, the press would have reported all the bad stuff about Trayvon in a couple of weeks just to be able to claim they were fair. Instead, it will be embargoed to preserve the "little boy" image they want to perpetuate.

The big O needs to keep his trap shut. Apparently, he learned nothing from running his mouth about the military prosecutions and the resulting undue command influence that could derail them. HE seems to be repeating that pattern here.

Change the charges (and there are so many to choose from now thanks to corrupt legislators), change the venue (basically judge-shop until you find a Harvard Law grad thoroughly indoctrinated liberal with contempt for the Constitution), and repeat until either the defendant is in jail, bankrupt, or commits suicide (preferably all three). It works every time it is tried!

Wishful thinking. It takes more than a simple frame-up and kangaroo court experience to sway most of those with a liberal mindset.

Part of the problem for "conservatives" is that we don't understand how the liberal brain works. We tend to think reality has something to do with the formation of beliefs. It doesn't.

Hell, it doesn't always work for people on our side. We have our share of slogan-spouting ninnies, too.

Between that and "the end justifies the means" you would have to logically conclude that their belief system (or lack thereof) makes them incompatible with our Justice System.

161 #158 This is supposed to be the hottest week of the year. They have exhibits set up with free admission for kids when accompanied by an adult.

We have had all sorts of problems because local people will let their kids come downtown (and in some cases they drive in and drop them off), some as young as 10. Then they run wild downtown and we end up with lots of fights and usually some shootings.

Why, then, are we LOSING, JJ?

We are, you know. They have Choom Boy, Bloomberg, and other purveyors of Free Shit, the nanny state and associated idiocy. What do we have? Bitch McConnell? Reince Priebus?

Even if I agree with you in theory -- and I sure as hell do, or I'd be over at Tepid Air praising Poppin' Fresh for his "fairness" -- it bothers the hell out of me that we have no one on our side who calls for action on ANY issue.

Choom Boy does that, and his sheep respond. The current state of our nation shows that millions of milling, bleating animals can have a major effect on how things are run.

164 I honestly wish that even 1% of the hand wringing angst expended on the Zimmerman/Martin incident could've been spent on the hundreds of young Blacks killed in Chicago during the exact same time period. There is a true tragedy. The legal system and what passes for justice did not fail Martin. His parents, relatives, friends, et cetera failed him. The gangsta culture rampant in the Black community failed him. The fact is that young Black men who are running wild have much greater chance of winding up dead than young White men running wild and that's on the Black community. We see a young White man acting Black, we view it as a phase and move on. The Black community sees a young Black man acting White and there is hell to pay.

166 Employes have to deposits of payroll taxes (what the employer owes) and trust fund taxes. (the withholdings of the employee). Penalties for late payments are sickening. When a company falls behind it is brutal to get back. It's something my firm specializes in. It feels great when we are able to pull them out of the fire and back to prosperity. But it doesn't always happen. Asking emiploers to stop paying is dangerous. I don't like it. But what I do like is if everyone increased their exemptions to 99. (make it 10 so it's no so obvious). No one can stop you doing it. File your taxes on time, yes. Just don't fucking pay until 30 days after you requested and argued your collection due process hearing and beleive your best collection alternaitve is to pay your taxes in full. But you didn't hear this from me.

This explains why Trump is on Fox and Friends every week. He isn't that smart politically, but at least he is plain-spoken and sounds like he could do something.

I really think this is why Perry might have a chance. It is also why I have no interest in Jeb Bush.

We have got to have someone who will defend us, who will fight for our point of view. Another who will do that is Trey Gowdy.

172 162 Posted by: MrScribbler at July 15, 2013 08:06 AM (/RIVS) We're losing because we lost academia well over 50 years ago. When children are taught from an early age that everything that we believe in and value is a lie, they grow up to have this as their default mindset. These children then go on to work in every corner of our society, including politics, the media, culture the law and most importantly, academia where they in turn spread the poison to the next generation. That's the reason. AND that's also the solution. But taking back the schools will be the most difficult challenge we face. But it's do or die.

Sefton at July 15, 2013 07:43 AM (+98Gb) Yes. That is exactly what's being said. What do you think all those use a pen, pee yourself and vomit comments were, jokes? There are those who truly believe that there is something wrong with people who think that they are entitled, nay, obligated to defend themselves from attack without the assistance of some authority. Yes, they believe that Zimmerman should have let himself be beaten to death. Yes, they believe that I should be raped rather than use a weapon, nearly any weapon, to defend myself. Yes, they believe that if a confrontation occurs, it is the person fighting back who is in the wrong, not the person who started the assault. It is part of the technocrat belief system. Only the enlightened ones are able to comprehend when force is appropriate and any of those outside the proper caste who seek to do so must be proven wrong. The underlying assumption of such a position that those who are engaging in predatory behavior are sub-human is never addressed and how dare you mention such a thing.

...........
A good example of this is Chicago's southwest and northwest sides. Chicago requires all city workers to reside within the city limits. So, over the years as the city turned more black and hispanic, the white cops, firemen and school teachers all moved to the very edges of the city. They are some of the most ideologically conservative people in the state (well, maybe not school teachers) but they vote D every time, because that's what the machine wants and what their unions want.

Just like Dan Lipinski (D - IL-03) gets reelected every year.. he votes more with the Repubs than Dems and his constituency is very conservative. But he's a Dem in good standing with the machine, and they get the vote out for him every two years. Weird.

Was watching the Tin Drum this weekend....

Bebra: You must join us, you must!

Oskar Matzerath: You know, Mr. Bebra... to tell the truth, I prefer to be a member of the audience, and let my little art flower in secret.

Bebra: My dear Oskar, trust an experienced colleague. Our kind must never sit in the audience. Our kind must perform and run the show, or the others will run *us*. The others are coming. They will occupy the fairgrounds, they will stage torchlight parades, build rostrums, fill the rostrums, and from those rostrums preach our destruction.

228 A clear takeaway from the Zimmerman debacle reactions is that there are large numbers of people in this land who, powered by the Internet, will engage upon the most shallow of examinations but demand the most severe of punishments. They will act on stereotypes while denouncing same. They are the ancient Athenian demos, willing to be swayed, willing to be demogogued, willing to banish, willing to condemn, willing to execute, willing to make all manner of life-changing decisions on the basis of a tweet--and they have influence. For they reside in all walks of life, from judge to journalist to jack-of-all-trades day worker. They are a clear threat to individual liberty and the continuance of rule by law in this nation, a clear threat to the continuance of the nation itself, for they are the new mob, with no hesitancy about acting, no desire for moderation, no desire for self-restraint, but with a strong desire to get outraged, and to then get a rope. And the ability to do same.

Pacific Rim failed for me in the trailer on what I guess was supposed to be a cool scene. The robot (exoskeleton) warrior is carrying a blue water freighter as a club. The problem I have with the scene is that robot is walking past relatively small buildings (10-30 stories) with this freighter fitting almost within a lane or two of the city streets. If anywhere near scale, the ship would be far larger than any of the buildings the robot is walking past and would likely not fit on that small street. A great lake freighter in the 1950's was around 400' length (taller than those buildings) with a 50' beam (4 lanes of traffic). Modern Pacific Ocean freighters are closer to 1000' length and 100' beam.

I waited for 2012 to hit broadcast cable TV, and I was still annoyed at the dumbing down of the physics to tell the story. Old Sci-Fi didn't do that, unless it was a part of physics unknown at the time. When new Sci-Fi does this, then Pacific Rim becomes no better than Sharknado, which is campy and enjoyable, but was offerred direct to cable. Scale isn't even physics, so get that right!

236 This country is so divided it will never be able to come together, we can barely operate now. Maybe its time to put the question before the voters: should the states go their seperate ways? Let's get the conversation started. I really don't see another way. Remember the Donks want 15 million new voters (more like 30 million) and we will never be able to overcome those numbers. We need to start finding a way out. Dissolution is a historical inevitability. It won't require a vote. The current system is simply unsustainable; it will collapse under its own weight, or it might take a little push. But it will collapse.

Ugh, the number of acquaintances on social media who've said things like "I haven't followed the case but I don't agree with the verdict"... Pricks. Maybe if you HAD followed the case you WOULD agree with the verdict. Some of them got into an earnest discussion about how sad it was that there had been lots of posts about the Glee actor who died, but few about the Trayvon Martin verdict and how sad it is that people showed no interest in serious news and reality and instead spent all their time on pop culture. Yet they were spouting the usual misconceptions ("the 911 operator said not to get out of the car", etc!) themselves. GAH.

Oh, and GZ's voting? Darling Angela Corey is Republican (even if it's the INO sort!). He might not be inclined to vote Democrat again but I doubt he'll be racing for the Republicans either...

249 On the withholding thing and people not having their finances in order to pay in a lump sum, that's the entire point. People don't realize how much they are paying in taxes because it's amortized. Having to write that big check would be an eye opener.
Case in point, once upon a time, I received quite a lovely bonus indeed. My then boss told me ahead of time what it was going to be and I told my parents gross amount X. A few weeks later, I get it and it's in net amount Y which was approximately half of the gross due to the taxes being taken out of it at that time at my insistence. My mother was completely shocked by that and I told her that I wasn't because I'd done some fast back of envelope figures so I knew that was what it was going to be. She was still stunned and to this day can't believe it. It's one thing to hear federal, state and local taxes take up anywhere from 35%-55% of gross. It's another thing indeed to pay that all at once.

BTW, I think any one can declare 2 to 3 more dependents than actual dependents without triggering any alarms. Arbitrarily going to 9 or 10 probably does trigger an IRS algorithm somewhere. IIRC, the form does allow an adjustment based on excess withholding.

253 True, but conservatism is based on logic, reason, history and tradition. Liberalism is... not. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at July 15, 2013 07:52 AM Yeah, sure. But... If you're dragging history into it, then reference our nation's founders as the Classical Liberals they were, and the rest is... Remember Gulliver's Travels, which end of the egg to break being the "reason" for perpetual war between two nations. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Regardless of which population or mind set, you'll find logic, reason, history and tradition expressed, differently, but there for eyes to see, ears to hear. For instance, Chris Hedges explicates the relevance of classical liberalism, though such has suffered death in both major parties, sold down the river in favor of authoritarianism. No one in their right mind could call Hedges an illogical, unreasonable, unhistorical, traditionless lame brain. Hedges has the integrity to repudiate those who seek positions of authority, regardless of party, as the people most likely to be corrupted and abusive. Prior to the '12 election, he admonished everyone to vote against the Democrat incumbent. Careful propagandizing "conservatism" as if holy. Holding onto the feudal order is "conservative". Not that such logic, such as the few elitists "deserving" their power to abuse mass populations, or that kings enjoy "divine rights" to be as corrupt and evil as they please, holds water when the floods ignore mere dams. It doesn't matter what or when. If there's a good idea, it won't take long for power mongers, regardless of ideology, to abuse it for gain. /Ask Jesus./ That's painfully evident throughout our government filled with politicians, agents and employees who have sworn to uphold the U.S. Constitution. Check out any political party; the same sorts of power mongers are the movers and shakers, forcing the will of their elitist positions of leadership onto voters in a 'take it or leave it' repeat performance, election after election. Authoritarianism, as if the nouveau chic. It's as old as the hills and twice as dusty. Just repackaged with an obscenely inflated price. Encore "reset". Labor, indentured servants, peasants, serfs, slaves discover for themselves that idea determines form, that liberty begins in the mind. And it doesn't take too many decades before what was a good organization is overrun by abusers. Neither ultraconservatism nor ultraliberalism brings much to the table beyond suffering of the masses while the monopolists feel deserving of life's pleasures. 'Deserve's got nothing to do with it.' Especially not when inalienable human rights are, as occurs now, propagandized as if salt that's lost its savor. Good for nothing but to be thrown out and trodden underfoot.

Joao Maria de Souza, 45, had been in bed with his wife Leni when the animal fell through the ceiling of their home in Caratinga, southeast Brazil.

The cow is believed to have escaped from a nearby farm and climbed onto the roof of the couple's house, which backs onto a steep hill on Wednesday night.

The corrugated roof immediately gave way and the one-and-a-half-ton animal fell eight feet onto Mr de Souza's side of the bed...

278 We're losing because we lost academia well over 50 years ago. Posted by: J.J. Apparently, there was a party in someone's room, and they ran out of booze. So they called down to room service, or the concierge, or whoever and said, "We need more beer." Room Service said "sure," but the beer never showed up. They tried this three times. Finally, King gets tired of it and picks up the phone, "Yes, this is Steven King. Beer will appear in room ### in thirty minutes, or else." Apparently the poor hotel staffer didn't want to find out what "or else" meant coming from Steven King.

I agree; just a gut feeling, but when I saw only a few dozen people aimlessly standing around in front of the courthouse as the verdict came down, I felt that the whole intimidation, fear of riots strategy had flopped. And I'd like to know why that happened. Some people a week ago were predicting there'd be no riots, but the majority, like me, thought it was inevitable. Then...nothing.

My theory: the air went out of the "Justice for Trayvon" movement when that big dumb girlfriend of his testified. No matter how brainwashed and radicalized blacks are, some part of them was still capable of feeling shame at the sight of that illiterate moron. (And I don't buy the "can't read cursive" excuse: the girl's functionally illiterate, and it was exposed before the whole world in that courtroom.) No matter how much they despise white culture, I think they can still feel that being illiterate is shameful. From that point on, though they wouldn't admit it before the enemy, blacks lost their zeal to put themselves on the line to champion this cause.

326 The duo of Deafening Silence and False Moral Equivalence are being employed in full by the POSOUS. The POS is NOT talking about our Courts of law as the best, final arbiter of the truth, and a just outcome. It is NOT giving any hint of an indication that St. Trayvon's lifestyle of thugging had ANY contribution to his early demise. Rather, we now hear seemingly bland, but utterly pernicious generalities about preventing "gun violence" ie. if only GZ were disarmed then St. Trayvon would be alive today. Moral equivalence between the law and crime, no defense of the rule of law. Undermine the Second Amendment. More Commie hogwash about the need for more "community" in distinction to quaint old concepts like having the ability to defend yourself, your property and your family. The fact that 75% of the people are not demanding that the POS resign for the utter contempt in which he holds our Constitution, individual liberty and the rule of law is just sad beyond belief. Let's just say there were the political equivalent of the Rapture, and only those with a visceral sense of American values were "saved." What % do you think are in the Elect? Seriously. 30%?

330 Regarding my 326 Yes, they knew. Trayvon had branched off. Zimmerman was his first real assault, though perhaps not his real first crime. Perhaps he would have cone back. But Zimmerman was his true start. Revelation: I tutored a black kid while in college, for about 5 years. Didn't maintain contact when I went away. The kid was a kid, a doofus, somewhat self-centered and somewhat materialistic. Figured he would actually get married, probably ge hen-pecked, be a decent man, though a doofus, doing not really well, but not poor--but that he would be a chump. Not a hard kid at all. Googled him a few months back. In retrospect, that self-centered and materialistic streak should have spoken to me more, and I'd like to talk to him about it. And I will. When he finishes his 30 years.

327 - "It is NOT giving any hint of an indication that St. Trayvon's lifestyle of thugging had ANY contribution to his early demise. "

No indeed, and wouldn't THAT be a worthwhile topic for the first black president to speak about? Wasn't that a hope early in his presidency, that he'd be a role model for young black men, and would help turn back the dead-end culture they were wallowing in? I remember a few addresses early on, of the "Stay in school" variety - quite anodyne stuff, really. NOW when everyone's listening, some tough talk about living a straight life if you don't want to end up like this might even make a difference. Instead, he's lapsed into vague pieties of the "We ALLLLLL have to think deeply, blah blah blah..." variety. Naturally because he doesn't want to admit that whites could be right and blacks could be wrong about anything.
