Happy Tuesday.

Gosh, why does the GOP have such trouble attracting new voters? Could it be the gleeful nastiness that so many like to display? Here's some photos from yesterday's anti-Gang of 8 "March for Jobs" that, to put it mildly, make it harder to sell Republicanism. These folks did us no favors. Nor did this woman, whom I'm sure has a plan to help the GOP shift Ohio back into the red column. And, of course, these old racist buttons from last year made another appearance.

Sen. Cruz, among other GOP leaders, spoke at the march. But, then, he's not up for reelection until 2018. What about politicians who have to appeal to voters now?

Meet CA-31's GOP Rep. Gary Miller. Rep. Miller used to represent CA-41, a safe GOP seat in Orange County, but moved over to CA-31 after redistricting.

He got lucky in 2012 because, under California's new "top two" primary system, his opponent was a Republican -- the Democrats having split the primary three ways. But Miller's not depending on that to get him reelected next year. He knows he has to be competitive in this majority-Latino district in San Bernardino. Which is why he has retracted his former statements suggesting that 12-20 million illegals be deported (from back when he was in a safe red district and could say things like that without getting the stuffing beat out of him on Election Day) and now says that he's "evolved" on the issue.

I highlight this example because it comes down to a question of whether the GOP is ready to simply give up CA-31 and similar "purple" districts. Do we want to take back the Senate? Do we ever want to take back the White House? Let me suggest that getting nasty, like the marchers did yesterday, is not a viable path to majority.

6 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Tuesday, July 16, 2013.  On this day in 1790, in a compromise deal worked out at Thomas JeffersonÂ’s diner table, Washington DC was established as the nationÂ’s capital.  So what did the North get out of the deal?  They got the nation as a whole assuming all the other StateÂ’s war debts after VA had already paid off its debts.  VA and MD got cheated.

8 Senate Majority Leader Harry “Pederast” Reid issued an ultimatum to Republicans on Monday to confirm at least seven presidential appointees or face a controversial rule change that could drain their power.

If I am not mistaken it still takes 67 votes in the Senate to do a rule change in mid cycle.  Supposedly this “nuclear option” bypasses that by using a loop-hole to get around the normal rules.  The big block he is worried about is Choom KingÂ’s NLRB members who are radical labor lawyers far from the mid-stream.  Not mentioned is Obama has had far fewer nominees blocked than Bush.  And as usual, McShitty and Corker are getting ready to sell us out.

10 OH man who was beaten by the 6 teens last year has died.  Not mentioned in this story is the fact that he was white and they were black.  They claimed they were bored and looking for something to do.  Police are looking at upping the charges now and have called for an autopsy.  In SC this would have been charged as a “lynching” and they would not have to look at “upping” the charges.  And if it had been 6 whites beating a black man it most assuredly would have been called a “hate crime”.

12 In response to Moe Lane from the ONT, elections now have virtually ZERO effect. We have no effective/willing opposition party to the commies and the bureaucracy now rules over us through regulations that have the weight of law. The only Republican administration that was even moderately successful at forestalling this to a small degree was Ronald Reagan's. Sorry, Moe. We can elect Republicans from now to the end of time but it will be meaningless if they can't abolish whole departments and entitlement programs, let alone have the will to do so.

20 Well, why in the hell should these people care about the GOP winning power, if the GOP is going to use this power in anti-american ways? Just so RINOs can get their slice of the corruption pie? The GOP had all the time it needed to get the budget balanced and reform all kinds of things. they didn't bother. The reason they didn't bother is because conservatives were foolishly loyal and the GOP played politics with that in mind. Now the conservatives recognize that either the GOP has to make a hard turn to the right, or the GOP needs to die and be replaced with a relevant political party. What do I care if the party that nominates a guy like Mitt Romney has little power? I really don't see why such a principle-free organization matters.

36

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

As I was walking into work this morning, I passed the hospital TVs tuned to CNN (I know, I know).  One of the Zimmerman jurors was being interviewed.  It says a lot, both about the ‘black communityÂ’ and about that rabble-rousing tinpot Il Douche in the White House that she was hidden in order to keep her anonymity.  Nice rule of law weÂ’ve got here, huh?

(of course, now that IÂ’ve seen last nightÂ’s threads, I see Drew already addressed this.  Still, my point stands.)

Anyway, on to Hollywood:  Like Sam Goldwyn, whose malapropisms have become legend, whether he really said them – “Gentlemen, include me out” or they were the creation of a publicist – “I want to make a movie about the Russian secret police; you know, the G.O.P.” – Columbia chief Harry Cohn is also the protagonist of stories that seem to good to be true.  Here are a couple:

For an oration in a film about big business, a Columbia screenwriter decided to crib from SpartacusÂ’ oration to his gladiators at the arena in Capua.  When Cohn read the script, he called the writer on the carpet.  “What is this shit?” he yelled.  The writer began explaining the historical background of the speech, but Cohn wanted to hear nothing about it.  “I donÂ’t want any of that crap.  I want a speech that every person in the audience will recognize immediately.”

“You mean like Hamlet’s soliloquy?” the writer suggested.

“No, goddammit!” Cohn screamed, “I mean something like ‘To be or not to be!’”

Another time, itÂ’s said, Cohn heard that The Iliad, by somebody named Homer,  would make a great movie.  He called his writers together and said, “Boys, I want a one-page treatment of it by tomorrow.”  So a team of Columbia screenwriters worked through the night, fueled by coffee and fear.  The next morning, shaken and bleary-eyed, they handed Cohn a one-page synopsis.

Cohn read it.  He gave his writers a doubtful look.  “There are an awful lot of Greeks in it.”

And thatÂ’s it for me.  Hope you all have a wonderful day.

75 Sure, the protestors are idiots. There's not much you can do about that. There will always be idiots. There will always be haters. What the GOP did in nominating Romney was not only embrace taking a position well to the left of the 1990s democrat party on virtually all positions, given Romney's progressive record, but also supported a guy who repeatedly employed illegal aliens for lawn care, and rather pathetically lied about not being aware of it (since he kept doing it through the exact same company with some people who were obviously illegal). The GOP shows such insincerity on illegal immigrants, with many talking about securing the border while actually hoping to employ these people under exploitative terms. That's sanctioning lawlessness. I don't think the GOP can ever be rid of bozos with silly slogans, and no other political party can either. There will always be nuts. But they can have higher standards than to nominate flip flopping liars.

Hell Gabe, why not tell us how we have to try harder since we all hate the poor and minorities too? What good is being nice if one guy in a T-shirt causes a coblogger of the 2008 winner of the conservative blog of the year to start bitching? I say we go full bull goose loon nasty for a change.

Posted by: endeavor to persevere at July 16, 2013 03:26 AM (zZJJp)

78 Seems to me Gabe, that the problem with the Republican Party is people who are too quick to criticize us while they give the side that encourages riots, looks the other way and constantly and continuously lies and race-baits a pass. But we have to be perfect, huh? Maybe it's time, past time, we got in the streets and fought back. But that would take balls. Something too many Republicans lack. Some would rather sit back and toss criticisms at their own side.

Posted by: Uncle Rick at July 16, 2013 03:27 AM (ZbB1q)

79 I'd like to like Gabe but he makes it irtually impossible. The GOP will never get a sizeable portion of the hispanic vote. We have 30+ years of solid data that shows that gop presidential candidates have on average recieved 30% of the latino vote. As the hispanic population of california has grown democrat control of the state has grown to the point where they hold complete and irrevicable control of that state. California used to be a republican strong hold it is now a democrat fortress with 55 electoral votes and wielding tremendous political influence. And there is nothing wrong with any of those buttons or shirts. Anyone pushing to regularize 11-30 million foreign nationals is an agent of that country and seeks to destroy the USA. Marco rubio and anyone pushing this is my enemy and should be branded a traitor.

Posted by: kreplach at July 16, 2013 03:27 AM (LnQr8)

80 So you DO subscribe to the fantasy that Republicans CAN appeal to big government hispanic liberals AND that Republicans can garner enough of the hispanic vote to make a difference. Oh and also not turn off the vastly more important white vote in the process. Good luck with that

83 I have said this before, but fine tuning the GOP message is a waste of time unless and until the voting process is cleaned up and fraud is eliminated. Foreigners who observe our elections are amazed at the complete absence of any kind of voter ID. There is a reason the Dems fight tooth and nail against integrity in the voting process.

Posted by: real joe at July 16, 2013 03:29 AM (3/h0M)

84 The following comment was a preplanned one, and is not really in response to Malor's comments:

We of the classic liberal/classic republicanism brand are told we are too white, must expand, must respect. And yet, when seemingly the top two priorities of the two "groups of color" we must "respect" the most are the following:

--Lynch George Zimmerman despite what the law indicates may be done
--Bless illegals, no matter what

then we have a problem, because it shows what I always knew--that in "respect", what we are truly being told is to give in to demands that have no basis in propriety, that have no real justification, other than brute force electoral strength--in demands that have no true righteousness to them.

I am afraid I am just not interested in winning these wonderful voters if what they ask for is a "sphere of influence" within the law, where on any issue that even marginally touches upon their race, they have the veto (regardless whether the veto will be based on principal or crassness). Well, sorry, no. I'd rather the United States end. It is supposed to be a commonweal, not a protection racket or the Kingdoms of Mongo.

Here is my true belief--we will get through the next thirty years just fine if everyone is brought to believe the Experiment is always just a series of incidents away from ending--and if lovers of liberty are ready to make that so. If you would have domestic peace, prepare for domestic war.

Yesterday, an incident here just proves that it doesn't matter the facts.  The usual suspects will be out in force protesting.  Two white officers were out patrolling and saw an SUV that matched the description of one reported stolen.  They stopped to investigate, and a black man got out of the vehicle.  It appeared to the officers that he was carrying a weapon.  They ordered him to come to their vehicle, and he fled.  During the chase, he dropped the weapon.  He grabbed it and turned toward one of the officers, and the officer shot and killed him.  There were protests of the shooting.

What does that say about the issue?

I'm not solely being snarky there.   Calling those on the other side sexual slurs, claiming that anyone who is a conservative is stupid and evil and, to use a term I hate, utterly otherizing the opposition sure as fuck seems to have worked for the Democrats.

Playing by the rules only works when both sides agree there are rules.   When one side doesn't and the other does?   Well here we are.

111 Posted by: Hola at July 16, 2013 07:06 AM (0a/7L) - This. Also, the GOP and Rubio in particular continues to be all for mass immigration, which means destruction for the right-wing base, which is 90% white, and a permanent leftist majority on every issue, not just some issues. A party with that commitment is no representation at all. It has to be destroyed and replaced with a party that will represent the interests of the base. Three key issues: 1. End mass immigration, legal and illegal. 2. End affirmative action; let whites have an equal shot at education and jobs. 3. Explicitly say white identity and white interests are as valid as any other. If a party doesn't agree on those three issues, you might as well stay home. Because even if your top issue is something else, like abortion, the deficit or defense, a party that continues to support demographic, economic and cultural destruction for whites will eventually lose on your main issue too. If the utter futility of the forty years since Roe v. Wade has taught us anything, it's that supporting phonies as "the lesser evil" while they continue to let leftists import most of a million extra voters a year is hopeless. You cannot let your own throats be cut while focusing on "the higher cause" - which is what idealistic whites have been doing. That just leaves the cause defenseless.

I couldn't stomach Romney's pompous supporters, so I only voted for him, but I really deeply regret it. That vote didn't help this country a bit. It probably harmed it by reinforcing this idea that the GOP should be like Romney, Mccain, Graham, Murkowski, etc. I won't do it again. The GOP has lost me as a member and volunteer and voter. I will only vote for candidates that I support, with no regard to their partisanship and really only a look at a very short list of issues I care about. I assert that the GOP has shed more voters like me than it has gained voters who want green cards. Those guys are democrats, idiots. The GOP had its long chance to balance the budget and left this country in a huge mess. All it has to offer in its defense is that the democrats are scary.

Nastiness has worked just fine for the Democrats... and continues to work for them.

Part of the GOP's problem is it's lack of nastiness, it's unwillingness to paint opponents as liars and enemies of "regular Americans."

There's two parts to an electoral equation:  make them like you and make them distrust/dislike/hate the other guy.  The Democrats get this (Kill Romney) The GOP doesn't.  Our elected officials save their ire for conservatives and tea partiers.

In short: stuff it, Malor. (Respectfully.)

P.S. Rubio is an amnesty shill.  He IS a sellout.  He IS a liar.

157 " Take a look at his record as governor of MA to get an idea. Fought against in state tuition for illegals, fought against sanctuary cities, was one of the first governors in the country to sign up to have the state police to work with ICE. He was always anti-illegals, he didn't just come up with that position during the presidential election. " Lies. Romney was a huge supporter of sanctuary cities and then paid lip service to ending them. Like everything with Romney, you have to pay attention to what he actually did. Did he end sanctuary cities in his state? Hell no. He gave an order in the closing days of his administration (Dec 13 when he left office January 4). Romney's order was simply something he left to Gov Patrick to enforce, and of course it was rescinded. Romney did nothing but the same thing Romney always did: flip flop at the last second in the most cynical way, hoping his dishonest supporters would be able to fool dumbasses. Romney had sanctuary cities in his state for years and that was 100% his responsibility and record, just like his illegal alien lawn care crew, hired repeatedly from the same guy while pretending he had no idea. Perhaps the greatest example of Romney's dishonesty is his opposition to a national Romneycare style mandate. For about two years he explained that he only supported a state level mandate. He had his own book edited to 'clarify' that this was always what he meant. Then his USA Today column turned up showing that a national health care mandate styled on Romneycare was his own suggestion to President Obama. You just can't trust anything Romney says, and that the GOP nominated Romney shows that it has shifted far too far to the left to be the solution to this country's problems.

168 Gabriel Malor: "Let me suggest that getting nasty, like the marchers did yesterday, is not a viable path to majority." - Betraying your supporters and conniving in their genocide by mass immigration and forced integration is not a viable path to gaining a lasting legislative majority, or to exercising power usefully. A party that favors the destruction of its supporters will run out of supporters, when they walk or (if they do not walk) when they are destroyed. For the base to walk out is better than for it to be destroyed. There cannot be endless loyalty up while there is no loyalty down.

179 >>So, okay. But please "splain me his state-run health care for Mass. Well I don't want to open old wounds but I will one more time. First came EMTALA. For those who aren't familiar with that law take a few minutes and read up. It was signed into law by Reagan, yes that Reagan, and forced states to treat any patient who showed up at any hospital (read virtually every hospital) that received federal funds for any reason. The kicker, there would be zero federal dollars to support this new and exciting law. Given that hospitals are one of MA's biggest industries this rapidly became a budget buster and was sending taxes through the roof. Second, you really need to understand the politics of MA. To say it is the most liberal state in the union is a vast understatement. The year before Romney was elected there was a state referendum that was heavily financed by the unions and the liberal to institute a single payer plan in MA. Yes, the first single payer plan in the state. It lost by something like 51-49%. As soon as the vote was over the liberals and unions vowed to bring it up again and again with more resources until it passed. Given that they controlled the legislature with over 80% of the vote this seemed like more than a safe bet. Third came Romney's election. Romney was forced to either come up with some solution short of the single payer or accept that the liberals and the unions would get voters they needed to get their single payer. I know this may sound like a stretch to some who don't live in MA but now that you have some experience with a government led by Obama, Reid and Pelosi perhaps you realize this was not a far fetched idea, it was going to happen. So Romney worked with the Heritage Foundation and used a plan they developed and was endorsed by guys like Newt Gingrich as a compromise. When you cut through all the noise it is not Obamacare. First, it is a state level plan, you know, federalism. Second, it only required that people who could afford insurance had to buy it rather than sucking off the rest of us who were paying for them with our taxes. Third, it had none of the odious provisions that Obamacare had for womyn's health. Yes, some of that was stuffed back in their subsequently by the legislature and Obama clone Deval Patrick but there is only so much one guy can do against a legislature and a populace that is overwhelmingly liberal. Note, I had health insurance in MA before and after Romney's plan. Nothing changed in my coverage and contra DrewM who loves to say that Romney's plan made MA health insurance some of the most expensive in the country, ah, no, it was already some of the most expensive long before Romney because MA. In fact, the cost of health insurance has risen slower in MA since Romney's plan than the rest of the country. Now them's the facts. Perfect? Nope. Anyone got a better idea that would have 1) passed in MA and is 2) better than single payer I'm all ears.

183 In March 2006 Romney actually campaigned FOR amnesty. In January 2008 he opposed amnesty (polls shifted a lot between then, as many will recall). The same thing happened with Obamacare. Romney's initial instinct was pretty much what the democrats want, but then he would see that this is a bad position to take as a candidate and he would deny he ever held that position. "Not ‘Moving Them Out’ In 2006, Romney said regarding undocumented immigrants in this country: “We’re not going to go through a process of tracking them all down and moving them out.” “We should have those individuals who are here illegally begin a process-- particularly those that are unable to be here without government support or those who are involved in crime --or beginning a process of registering for a citizenship, applying for citizenship and then carrying out the process necessary to get there citizenship" Anyone saying Romney has a good record on Amnesty is a fool or a liar. Take note of who they are so you know who to take with a grain of salt in 2016 (probably when they urge us to support 'conservatives' like Rubio, Christie, Jeb).

Pro lifers used to believe in inevitable victory, because pro-life families would out-breed pro-abort families. That theory cannot work in the face of mass immigration. The left doesn't have to out-breed the right. It can win forever as it is doing, by this combination: 1. Importing a permanent majority while breaking up conservative culture and neighborhoods through the forced integration of the imported masses. 2. "Stealing" conservative-bred kids through leftist education (starting with the TV as educator). 3. Beating the right even when it is theoretically in power, due to sellout "right-wing" politicians that don't do anything for their supporters.

200 Honestly, one day you will give up being patently dishonest to support your personal whims.

The people you've cited do not represent a majority of GOP voters. They're outliers. But feel free, as most liberals do,  to disingenuously represent them as such.

And what's the allusion here? The GOP should simply give-up or fold on intellectual discussions about substantive policy issues which have a serious affect on out country because...a certain demographic does not find them favorable?

I am a little sick of the sophistry and implied prejudices. We have a very serious immigration issue which requires some very thoughtful remedies.

Quite frankly, Rubio (to name one) was patently dishonest about the entire bill he pushed which would not only make the situation worse, but ultimately represented the type of foolish, pathos based legislating a majority of this country hate. And while I don't agree with the way those few people expressed their feelings, I certainly understand the passion.

Get off your high-horse.

Gabe is kind of like the heel in professional wrestling who is brought in to stir up the crowd in a ridiculous and over the top fashion.  It works for a bit but then it gets old.  If I wanted to read things that are the logical equivalent of gibberish and full of double standards I would subscribe to Rachel Jeantel's Twitter feed entitled, "That's raaaacist, you Cracka!"

BTW, I went by Althouse's blog for the first time since the election and saw she had turned off comments.  I gave her up because she has some very ugly views on race so it doesn't bother me any, but I found it interesting.  I notice Insty did not link to her for a long time but recently started doing that again.  I guess her volume fell off when her own content had to carry the blog.  You have to e-mail comments to her husband now and he publishes the ones he likes.  Typical left-wing idea of how things should be run.

It's not his fault for supporting what he believes, and it's not his fault for being nominated. And if the GOP is full of progressives (which it is), then there's nothing wrong with it supporting someone who has championed essentially socialist policies for most of his political career. The only annoying part is the lying about his views to cynically con a few extra voters, but that's what politicians do. The problem is that the entire country has shifted to the left, culturally and morally, to the point where we are actually voting for people who force you to buy health insurance via government coercion. These people are tyrants of the left, and the GOP is supporting them for President? Romney was far from the only one who was OK with this. Newt and others were as well.

That way, you get all the conservatives and as many moderates as possible. What the charts they show them do not calculate is the price of proving you have no principles as a political party. With no principles, and no core, there is no leadership, no courage, and no vision. So there's no future and no one with heart really wants to support the party. The people who the GOP is short changing actually do matter, so screwing them in hopes of picking up some people on the leftmost front is very stupid. Not that this would keep Reid from sooner or later getting rid of it for all nominations, then motions to proceed, then to end debate on legislation. As Vic mentioned above, it takes 67 to change the rules in the middle of a Congress. So they're going to break the rules to change the rules.

266 There are people who believe in being Nice all the time? Posted by: BCochran1981 at July 16, 2013 07:45 AM (da5Wo) Sort of. The Cult of Nice is the proposition that the most important thing to do is to make sure that no one is upset or offended in any way and that any criticism, however mild, is presented in the most ingratiating manner possible. It's placing in primary position the goal of everyone get along all the time even if that means that no one gets to have any opinions on anything ever. As you can well imagine, I have no patience for the Cult of Nice. Why? Because it's not really about being nice or being polite or being adult enough to comprehend that people disagree and to move on. It's about suppressing dissenting views. For example, I used to belong to some online writing groups where my political beliefs were in the minority, to put it mildly. Almost invariably, someone would make some snotty comment about the reich wing or the like. When I would respond, I was the one in the wrong for upsetting the community and injecting strife into the discussion. It's just not nice, you see. Pointing out that I was pushing back engendered the response that the other person may have been wrong but there was no reason why I couldn't let it roll off my back. It's about allowing those who are nasty to get away with it. Now, there's nothing wrong with being polite. I agree wholeheartedly that public political discussion can use far more politeness. But once one side throws common decency out the window, it's a fool's game not to engage at least somewhat. I'll repeat, when the other side stops telling me that I am not really a woman, that I am not really queer, that I am a cretin, that I am a racist, that I am subhuman, that I do not exist, then I will listen to propositions regarding raising the level of discourse. But until then? You shove me, I will shove back. If you don't like it? Then don't push me first.

This is a great point.  Rubio was the straw that broke the camel's back for a lot of people.  His stance and teaming up with the odious pr*ck, Schumer, did it for me.  It really brought home the reality that I can't trust even those I trusted in the GOP.  We've been the "adults in the room," but this country is now full of children.  I'm sick and tired of being called names, sick and tired of seeing liberals act like insane lunatics while I'm supposed to sit calmly and watch them froth and take over my country.  I don't advocate for throwing feces and acting in kind.  But there comes a point where we have to start fighting back.  And if that means coming out of our comfort zones, within reason, so be it.  We're losing this country.  Somebody better start doing something.

Nothing changed in Romney's call for a path to citizenship. Go home, go to the back of the line and reapply. People pick out one partial soundbite and think they've found a gotcha. Dumb. 286 What pisses me off is it's intellectually dishonest.

We can agree to disagree on the issues. That's fine and the essence of good argumentation. Provided it is fact based, the conclusions are intellectually substantive and ultimately devoid of personal bias.

But extrapolating select situations and making broad assertions contrary to fact is both mendacious and foolish. It's not even entertaining and no, it won't keep me coming back. Quite the contrary.

I don't always agree with Ace. But one can usually determine how his conclusions were derived. He generally walks through the thought process. If there is doubt, he'll pose a question. Perhaps even engage someone in the comments.

But this is pure tripe, bordering on propaganda. I get enough of that in the media. It's actually ignoratio elenchi.

Posted by: JackStraw at July 16, 2013 08:30 AM (g1DWB)" Perry isn't that great. Granted, he's a hell of a lot better than Romney. Smarter, more successful as governor by a massive margin, and much more honest, better on immigration and the government mandate, but also better on gun rights and much better on fiscal leadership. Still, he kinda falls short. Sanctuary cities are a great example, but there are a few others. The GOP could do better, but it is very unlikely to. The reason it won't support Perry is because he is essentially 95% conservative with less than five bona fide screw ups over the last decade + of executive leadership. The GOP is not conservative. It nominated a progressive, Romney, so the GOP is progressive. The whole country is progressive. The real focus for conservatives is either secession for sane states like Texas or figuring out a way to turn the culture around so that conservatism can make a come back. Romney isn't being held to any sort of unfair standard... it's not his fault he loves socialist policies. he didn't force us to nominate him.

I do not want praise from progressives and am not staying up at night wondering if you like me.

Perry has got blemishes for sure. But he was better by far than Romney and would have got the nod had it not been for his pain-killer addled debate performances. The establishment is against us. 356 Looks like O'Mara and West reached out to Mas Ayoob to be an expert witness. No wonder he has been silent on the case. In fact, I donÂ’t take expert witness cases until IÂ’ve seen all the evidence, and the prosecution was extremely slow in providing that. I wound up not being involved. However, having been retained by one of the defendantÂ’s lawyers and consulted with another, I felt bound by confidentiality and did not think it would be professional to comment directly on the matter from then on.

358 Courting New York Muslims, Democrat candidates raced to guarantee Muslim votes. “The Muslim community is on the political map in New York,” Quinn said. “The days of ignoring the interests and the significance of this community, those days are over.” Liu, who has repeatedly visited Muslim groups, followed. “Assalamu Alaikum,” he said, offering the customary Arabic greeting. “With a lot of hard work, inshallah, we will win this election and we will change this city.” Yet, the warm messages were not enough to break the ice with American Muslims, targeted be police surveillance over the past two years. The community was already aggrieved when Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg vetoed a Council recommendation to add two Muslim holidays to the school calendar. In an appeal for support, Quinn said she would close schools for those holidays. “So if you get elected, we can count on that?” Naji Almontaser, an American citizen born in Yemen, asked. “Oh, absolutely. Absolutely,” she responded. Someone should tell this ignorant gay twit quinn that ramadan lasts a full month. And the bitch wants to close schools? Stupid whoring scrunt

She even married one of her commenters. but if she doesn't want to have a comment section that's cool. Popular comment sections are either like this blog's where you have degenerate level jokes like 'beavis, i said cuntwhistle, huhu huhuhuh', or you wind up endlessly policing the threads of a million issues. Personally, I would prefer the former approach as no normal person has enough time for the latter, but I think not having a comment section at all works fine too. Her blogging on its own is kinda lame when it doesn't provoke a threadwar, though.

The GoP is that demonized by the media. Plus, 40% of the base would stay home. There are two options. One, a little common sense populism and relentlessly staying unified on message. Demonize the core Democratic constituencies and poke fun at Dem hypocrisy . Do all that cool shit Breitbart did so well. No one ever believed that Romney was forced into the progressive stuff he always finds his way to, but if they did, they would have to acknowledge that Romney supported a ton of it, indeed the worst of it, after he was out of the Governor's office and on his 5-6 year presidential campaign. I never hear an answer as to why Romney supported Romneycare being nationalized. For a while, before the campaign heated up and proof came out, Romney's supporters actually denied he did this at all. Now it's more like 'la la la I can't hear you'. I held my tongue until the general election because I wanted Obama to lose, but really, the worst thing about that election was that the GOP was totally neutered as a force for conservative reform. 468 Posted by: Dr Van Nostrand at July 16, 2013 09:44 AM (s9AkV) ---- I agree completely. The biggest problems I have in convincing people to vote for conservative topics is getting them over the fact that they personally have either seen or heard several times something they consider racist, sexist, etc., come from major conservative speakers, politicians, activists. That is, they might end up agreeing with me and seeing my point, but at the end of the day they will utterly refuse to vote for the "party of Akin" or the same as those people protesting amnesty with the Mexican flag paraphernalia. I know, I know, I know, you can match and exceed this stuff 1 for 1 with democrats and liberal activists. And the double standard is total bullshit. But those are the rules of the game, and railing against them isn't going to help. I'm not saying stop making signs or whatnot, but rather be smarter about what your "cutesy" attention-getting protest imagery might look like to someone who may not agree with you 100% but whom you're trying to persuade to come over to your side, be like you, think like you, and ultimately vote like you.

How do those things make our protests stronger and more effective?

Posted by: JeremiadBullfrog at July 16, 2013 06:26 AM (Y5I9o)

You get a national party that actually organizes the protests and makes the trinkets and writes the chants. (And by the way, I'm not missing the point.)

Posted by: Wendy at July 16, 2013 06:31 AM (KydDZ)

475 Blindside and Baldy, No, no, no. No one here is calling anyone racist. But there are a LOT of people out there who interpret that imagery differently, often in a wrong and dumb way, but in politics their votes count just as much and yours and mine. For example, yes, nationality and race are not the same. But for LOTS of Mexicans their national symbols DO have strong racial overtones in a way that the US flag does not. Maybe it shouldn't be that way, maybe that's awful and irrational. But regardless, that's what lots of people actually think. So if you're trying to persuade them, maybe it's worthwhile to consider that. Or maybe you'd prefer to condescendingly huff and puff all by yourself in a corner because other people don't know as much as you about what their own lives mean? And then who's being like the Democrats? Also, the free-shit angle is only part of the problem. I don't believe that most current free-shitters actually started out like that. I do, however, think that conservative negligence of the importance of PR and rhetoric have made the Democrats' case much MUCH easier to make on the grounds of identity politics. Look at the millstone we have around our necks because of Todd Akin. I'm certain there are tons of voting people who are completely turned off to any non-free-shit message associated with the GOP merely because of that asshole's idiot comments about pregnancy. Again, it's totally irrational and dumb, but....if you want to win large numbers of votes, you at least need to avoid turning people off.

476 You get a national party that actually organizes the protests and makes the trinkets and writes the chants. (And by the way, I'm not missing the point.) Posted by: Wendy at July 16, 2013 10:31 AM (KydDZ) --- Ok, so by saying that you want the protests to be more organized and message/imagery-controlled, are you agreeing that the " Two people with racist gear and a lady with acartoonish, poster of Rubio" actually do end up having a negative effect on how conservatives are perceived by a significant number of voters?

477 Let me suggest that getting nasty, like the marchers did yesterday, is not a viable path to majority. Posted by Gabriel Malor at 07:01 AM Comments   Let me suggest that there's nothing wrong with getting nasty in politics but it's important to be selective about targets, what you're being nasty about. Racial bigotry is blatant idiocy, but expressing indignation and contempt is perfectly justified and correct when direct against, say, radical feminists advocating obvious infanticide or Muslim groups such as CAIR who absolutely refuse to condemn Islamic terrorism or members of the press who have abdicated their responsibilities and serve as the agitprop arm of the Obama Administration. Such people deserve nastiness--and maybe even a strongly worded letter.   But yes, you're right, it's usually more advantageous to say what you're for rather than what you're against; otherwise you come across as bitter and petulant--a loser, in short. Winners don't whine. Reagan knew this. All good leaders know this.

"Look at the millstone we have around our necks because of Todd Akin."

So women in vagina costumes and people with jars of feces are winning votes for the Democratic party?

479 Here I expected images of old white people stomping on Mexicans and and demanding the w-words get deported immediately. A mostly peaceful mob burned up with the white rage throwing busboys off of roofs. No, just some caricatures of the worst traitor in TEA Party history. You are as lame as Rubio, Malor.

Posted by: Motionview at July 16, 2013 06:55 AM (6Tbb5)

480 Piss off Gabe. Drama Queen. Rubio is a cunt of the first order, and people do not like it.

Is that a question or a statement? You are making a mountain out of a mow hill over three individuals.

483 Those protesters aren't buff and virile looking, like that dreamy Tom Roberts on MSNBC.  I simply quiver when he says outrageous nonsense.

484 474 "Look at the millstone we have around our necks because of Todd Akin." So women in vagina costumes and people withjars of fecesare winning votes forthe Democratic party? Posted by: Wendy at July 16, 2013 10:46 AM (KydDZ) ---- Again, you're missing the point. Because of the biased culture we have, any perceived-conservative misstep is going to be blared out 1000 times more than intended liberal malice (cf. Deen vs. Baldwin, even though Deen supported Obama). Also, Akin was running to be a representative, so it's pretty easy to say that anything he says is, well...representative. Protesters, however, can be dismissed. You know the "mostly peaceful" narrative. Liberals benefit from that, but conservatives don't. I know it's a double standard. What I'm saying is that if we don't recognize that and play smart about it, then we're the dumb ones. I'm NOT saying don't speak out; I'm NOT saying don't make signs; I AM saying that if you're protesting the immigration bill, drop the Mexican flag imagery---it's already frickin' obvious to everyone in this country that the main immigration problem comes from Mexican illegals...we don't need to point that out, and thereby serve up imagery that is simply and easily twisted into a picture of "people who don't like Mexicans".

485 Is that a question or a statement? You are making a mountain out of a mow hill over three individuals. Posted by: Wendy at July 16, 2013 11:17 AM (KydDZ) --- I'm starting to think that you aren't really reading my comments...my full statement was one question: by saying that you want the protests to be more organized and message/imagery-controlled, are you agreeing that the " Two people with racist gear and a lady with acartoonish, poster of Rubio" actually do end up having a negative effect on how conservatives are perceived by a significant number of voters?

486 @JeremiadBullfrog: If perception is reality -- you're a racist. Period.

Posted by: Chris_Balsz at July 16, 2013 07:38 AM (zIrfB)

487 If perception is reality -- you're a racist. Period. Posted by: Chris_Balsz at July 16, 2013 11:38 AM (zIrfB) --- Exactly! But my point is that the Democrats' strategy is to hammer into low-info voters a very specific kind of perception that molds low-info voter preconceptions about conservatives and their ideas. So it's like they're winning the argument before we even open our mouths because they've already convinced the low-info voters about the meaning of the things we say and do. E.g., "You KNOW they're only against immigration because of racism because look at how they assume that all illegal immigrants are Mexicans--the pictures prove it!" I'm NOT saying this is a good argument--it's quite crap. But it is EFFECTIVE. And what I see here is a lot of (justified) anger over its effectiveness, but very little constructive discussion about how we can negate this strategy.

488 First step, stop asking whether we should censor ourselves. We shouldn't. "

489 First step, stop asking whether we should censor ourselves. We shouldn't. " Posted by: Chris_Balsz at July 16, 2013 12:23 PM (zIrfB) ----- Right. And wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone would just automatically understand that you're not racist? I mean, that's the most reasonable, open-minded option, no? Make no assumptions? Wouldn't it just be wonderful if no one made any assumptions and the political discourse of our country were rational and even-handed? But it's not. So if you want results, if you want to convince someone who's already got a few asinine preconceptions about you, if you want to win votes, you need to speak their language and not demand like some kind of self-centered adolescent that the rest of the world interpret you only in the manner than you intend. But if you want to whine about self-censorship, which is basically a fully asinine liberal claim about not wanting to suffer the consequences of other people's free choice to interpret your actions as they want, then I'm sure the Democrats will be happy to support you in your grand display of freedom as they use your words and actions to gin up the votes to eventually deny that freedom to you with the full force of law. I mean, self-censorship is a strong word. Are you seriously saying that it's a major infringement of freedom of speech to make the strategic suggestion that we drop the Mexican flag imagery from immigration bill protests?

Posted by: JeremiadBullfrog at July 16, 2013 09:21 AM (Y5I9o)

490 "Are you seriously saying that it's a major infringement of freedom of speech to make the strategic suggestion that we drop the Mexican flag imagery from immigration bill protests? Posted by: JeremiadBullfrog at July 16, 2013 01:21 PM (Y5I9o)" Yes. You are pretending that some factions of the GOP are too toxic to be allowed to be heard -- not their fault! But they must be silenced for the good of all! Lesser evil! Lesser evil! I mean I read the comments. The party has been hijacked by revolting invade the world invite the world (TM Sailer) neocon types in a bizarre alliance with the most revolting of Christian fundamentalists(if you doubt it just read WorldNetDaily or watch CBN for two minutes-these are not fringe outlets) Take a clue out of the Conservative party in Canada who distance themselves from neocolonists and their apologists as well as hyper Christian loons while at the same time propagating bourgeios values and business friendly policies. They have a strong pull among minorities Posted by: Dr Van Nostrand at July 16, 2013 09:44 AM (s9AkV)" To which you wrote: "I agree completely. The biggest problems I have in convincing people to vote for conservative topics is getting them over the fact that they personally have either seen or heard several times something they consider racist, sexist, etc., come from major conservative speakers, politicians, activists. " And you want these people to shut up. Falsely imagining that Jeremiah Bullfrog is still fresh enough to be heard. As I said, you, too, are perceived as a bigot; if you imagine you can be salvaged from "reality", so can those others - but, you don't want to. Why oh why would we associate the Mexican flag with illegal aliens? Could it be that their government facilitates illegal aliens and has demanded amnesty from the floor of our Congress?

Posted by: Chris_Balsz at July 16, 2013 02:57 PM (TbVAj)

491 "Right. And wouldn't it be wonderful if everyone would just automatically understand that you're not racist?" No stupid, the press will call you racist without ANY justification. They will manufacture it from nothing. They will call it code words and dog whistles. The press will do this no matter how much you generously bitch at protesters on their behalf, or how much you filter yourself down to milquetoast nothingness. They will call you racist because it makes you flinch and upbrade their enemies in your smug, self important, futile quest to appear blameless in the face of a campaign of repetition of libels. Since you are too dumb to understand what is going on you are too dumb to have any authority regarding what to do about it. You are essentially wondering why the ventriloquist lets the dummy say those awful awful things. You don't get it.

Posted by: Cakefinger at July 16, 2013 03:14 PM (OsCtd)

492 Cakefinger, let me see if I have this right.

Because leftists and their allied media will paint conservatives, no matter what we do or say, as ignorant irrational bigots whose political positions are based solely on our nasty tribalistic antipathy toward anyone who isn't a white evangelical Protestant, conservatives should just come right out  & publicly confirm that vile accusation against conservatives and do so in such a way that there will be no doubt left in the public's mind that the left was right to stereotype us that way?

I'm just trying to understand the logic advanced by you & others here which holds that actively corroborating leftist smears against conservatives somehow hurts leftists & helps to advance the cause of conservatism in the eyes of those we've all been trying to persuade so the conservative agenda might be allowed to prevail.

Doesn't crap like this ugly caricature conflating all Hispanics - even Americans of Cuban ancestry - with the quintessential KKK-style image of a lazy Mexican on a donkey give leftists more credibility?

Doesn't it & our knee-jerk defense of it make the left righteous truth-tellers whose word is more accurate & reliable than ours in the eyes of everybody else and doesn't it make conservative positions more suspect & more unattractive to all those we've been trying to persuade of the rational merit of those positions?

That specific imagery has an ignominious past & is absolutely 100% weapons-grade toxic, as every good Stormfronter knows, but I guess the prime takeaway message for the voting public that conservatives believe all dark-skinned people with vowel-y last names are all the same ethnic menace to America no matter what continent they or their parents happened to have been born on is sooooo much more important than the now-subordinated message that Rubio's bill is an unmitigated disaster for all Americans, right?

The people turning themselves into pretzels here in order to defend the indefensible are actually defending LEFTISTS against genuine conservatives objecting to self-sabotaging garbage like this & are actively helping to discredit the conservative position on the Senate bill by promulgating the conclusion that our opposition to it is borne of nothing more than raw ethnic bigotry rather than arrived at through solid deliberative reasoning based on sound moral principles.

But oh yeah, let's exact revenge upon the leftists for smearing us by proving to the world they were absolutely right on the money about us & our bigoted opposition to the Senate bill. That'll show 'em, you betcha.
