Friday!!!!

The Colorado recall elections against two Democratic state senators who voted for the state's new gun control law is clear to proceed.

There is an amusing reminder at Popehat that trolls aren't very smart.

Liz Cheney's first week of candidacy probably wasn't everything she could have hoped for.

A few paragraphs down in this piece on Netflix's Emmy nominations, I was surprised at the statistic "average Netflix subscriber watches 87 minutes of television on the Web site per day, more than on any cable network." Seemed like a lot to me, although my brother summed it up: "So, two shows per day." Still seems like a lot of TV.

Treasury IG says it's going to be difficult for state Obamacare exchanges to open on schedule due to the need to, y'know, test the dang things before the public is forced to use them.

Finally, I liked Man of Steel, but there's some truth to this episode of "How It Should Have Ended":

Have a great weekend.

39 ON THIS DAY... July 19th, 1969 Events at Chappaquiddick Island gained international attention on July 19, 1969, when the dead body of Mary Jo Kopechne was discovered inside an overturned car in a channel on the island. The car belonged to U.S. Senator Edward M. "Ted" Kennedy, who had driven it off a bridge late on the previous night, the 18th. He did not report the incident to police until the following morning, the 19th. Kopechne's body was finally recovered from the submerged car, and Kennedy entered a plea of guilty to a charge of "leaving the scene of an accident after causing injury". He received a sentence of two months in jail, which was suspended.

I watched Naked and afraid last night, (Costa Rica episode). The man was a whiny drama queen from start to finish...but he did work hard. He was a bit creepy too. The woman was a bit off also, and spent the episode enabling the cruel prick she was paired with. 23 years old, and her first order of business was fashioning some clothes to wear, instead of doing things like building shelter, or searching for food.

She did have a nice ass though.

When people were asking yesterday what Detroit has to sell, my first thought was a helluva lot of art.   There are major worries in the art world about what is going to happen because there are some significant works that are going to go up for sale and, depending on how the sale is done, this could crash the market.

They've even got one of the survivors on their staff now, and he was on the news last night explaining that people who support gun rights shouldn't show up because shut up, they need to "respect the victims." Sadly, the interviewer didn't bother to mention that had the theater not been a gun-free zone, Holmes might have been stopped.

For all the fantasies of going to Wash DC and starting Revolution 2.0 [useless] doing so at State Capitals, while a much longer and dicier road, is actually doable. Not advice, just sayin'. Posted by: Bigby's Bloody Shirt Waving Hands

86 Liz Cheney shouldn't be (and probably isn't) surprised by the media's treatment of her as a candidate. Her father is, and will always be, the Left's Great Satan. Don't know too much about her politics, but every time I've seen her on TV I've been impressed. She is one Republican who does not let anything slide (e.g., loaded questions) and she can easily counter any Lefty's b.s. while maintaining her calm demeanor just like her dad. Should be fun to watch this roll out. I really, really hope she's not a squish on things like immigration and gun rights.

She's a happy warrior, and even if the voting records were exactly the same between her and Enzi I'd still vote for Cheney in a heartbeat.  We don't need any comfortable conservatives...we need people who can AND WILL articulate conservatism.

Enzi doesn't.  Cheney does.  Simple.

94 Talk about failed state supported ventures failing.  Hawai'i's defunct Super Ferries.  The support equipment is going for auction.  Estimated value is $40 million and opening bid is set at $250,000.
http://tinyurl.com/lkcbmbf

The US Navy bought the two ferries, one which never entered service, for $35 million.  They are named USNS Guam and USNS Puerto Rico.  Total cost to build both ships, as financed by the federal government who put liens on them when the business folded, was close to $200 million.
http://tinyurl.com/l7zczpb

What finally scuppered the service, besides poor ridership, was the state Supreme Court ruling a law the legislature passed unconstitutional.  The law, intended to salvage a private company, was too specific the court ruled in who it benefited.

95 90 Posted by: Lizzy at July 19, 2013 08:04 AM (2mSdf) Agreed. Every time I've seen her on TV she manages to smack down with force any lefty she is debating. Let me say that no candidate is perfect. I'm sure as we dig deeper into her record and platform, there will be issues that we'll disagree with. BUT overall, she's better than Mike Enzi, who is the same as Corker and Hoeven. Ineffectual at best, and a stooge of the left and RINO's at worst. I'll support Cheney over Enzi.

101 During WWII, when the Nazis were trying to vanquish Yugoslavia, the Chetniks (Serbs) used what they called "subtle sabotage" to fight against the invaders.  (If they acted openly, the Nazis would exact vengeance against entire towns, burning them to the ground.)

So the Chetniks would, say, throw sand into the axles of trucks about to leave; or hollow out chunks of coal, fill them with explosives, and then toss the rigged coal into the coal car of a train about to pull away from the station.  This way the breakdown occurred well away from any Chetnik villages, so they couldn't possibly be blamed.

130 "The average Netflix subscriber watches 87 minutes of television on the Web site per day, more than on any cable network."

Mattering how they get that, it could be a meaningless stat. For example, my old roommate often had Netflix queued up and running in the background. So, he "watched" 10-12 hours of Netflix a day, even if he was only ever paying attention to about one show, which skews the numbers. But, I guess that's the same way to get numbers for watching TV, isn't it?

So you're a "no" on that whole "Burn, scatter, salt" idea, huh? Some ideas (you'd have to use them all, though, to overwhelm the system): tons of ethics complaints against Democrat politicians (also: RINOS, VAGs, or CLITs). I mean every little thing, take the time to file a formal complaint. Similarly civil rights complaints about each and every person/institution with whom you interact who insults you, or just doesn't treat you like frickin' royalty. For people who are not self-employed, drop your withholding to the minimum amount possible (so you know you'll owe money on tax day) and then file an extension. Other things along those lines. Basically, give the whole Federal Bureaucracy the Sarah Palin treatment.

205 From the AP! By CALVIN WOODWARD Associated Press WASHINGTON -- Another year, another round of exaggeration from President Barack Obama and his administration about health insurance rebates. In his speech defending his health care law Thursday, Obama said rebates averaging $100 are coming from insurance companies to 8.5 million Americans. In fact, most of the money is going straight to employers who provide health insurance, not to their workers, who benefit indirectly. Obama danced around that reality in remarks that also blamed problems in establishing affordable insurance markets on political opponents, glossing over complex obstacles also faced in states that support the law. http://tinyurl.com/mt6wuvq

I was thinking the same thing.  I often play Netflix as I go to sleep.  My iPhone will just play 1 episode and then stop but the web browser plays 3 half-hour episodes by default.

254 The last 3 times I've been to the local Gander Mtn, they've had no handgun ammo. None. Of any caliber. My B-i-L apparently also has his CCW, but no self-defense rounds, so my wife bought him some for his birthday. We were at Cabela's to pick up something else, and she decided to look for some. No handgun ammunition. Heck, most of their ammunition except for 20ga and 12ga was gone. I think I saw some 410 and some 30-06. So she's looking around like she's lost (I was looking at something else at the time) and one of the clerks asks if he can help. Her: "Well, I'm looking for 9mm ammunition, but I can't find any." Him: "All we have is that hollow-point right behind you."

I am responding point by point to what he said and it's rather straightforward but I am having a little trouble with a response to this. Any suggestions. Please note: This is not my immediate superior, but he is in a sense my "boss" . Wise ass comments won't cut it and would not be appropriate. I guess, if I were to give a real response to this it would be something along the lines of "That's not a true statement.  Caucasian families give their children "the Talk" about how they can't go to certain areas of cities, because chances are they'll be harassed/beaten for just being white.  The racial aspect of it isn't mentioned much, but it's implied."

Although the preferred response is "That's real retarded".

316 On Zimmerman post-verdict: I am not a lawyer but I did have what I consider a first-class education in the law, helped by the fact that the bulk of the law is very ethical and logical (at least so far as those portions the social engneers have not touched). And it seems to me that those considering self-defense laws racist in intent need to consider the undeniable fact that if not one black man existed in the world, the American laws on the subject would be the exact same, as any exploration of Anglo-American legal history would show. These laws are quite simply an indication that the responsible yeomanry get to be owners of their community and do not have to suffer crippling losses in feelings of personal dignity simply to protect aggressors. It seems to me that if those up in arms over the acquittal wish to do something vis a vis "profiling", they might look at the "fighting words" doctrine--which their brand of liberalism essentially abolished--as a path to go forward on. It would have the same potential for abuse as what they object to (probably more so), and would get repealed after some cause celbres, but then, what they want is automatic conviction when they wish it, not consistentcy. Nevertheless, the avenue is pointed out. I personally would add calling somebody a racist with no proof to the "fighting words" doctrine, but that is me. Talk about profiling.

The “talk” is common in African American families where parents tell children to expect to be treated differently and singled out. I don’t know of many Caucasian families that need to give this “talk”. Here's how I would address that one: "While it is sad that African American families have to have "the talk" that is an indictment of their own culture, not any sign of racism. It is simply true that a young black man, well dressed (that is: jeans *not* around his thighs, *not* wearing a big heavy coat in summer, etc.) will not be treated significantly different by the vast majority of the population. There is also the fact that history plays into our decision making. While the fact may be sad and uncomfortable, Blacks do commit a disproportionate amount of crime. So it stands to reason that people who are on the lookout for crime (from police to private security to store owners) will be suspicious of young Black men. This is especially true if they're dressed like a gang member. Those may be unfortunate facts, but they are not proof of any racism- institutionalized or otherwise. They are simply sad facts of existence in our fallen world. To claim that someone acknowledging these facts and acting upon them is racist is to deny that person their own status as a "real" human being. It assumes they have no history of their own; that they are "unpeople." To blame a man for being suspicious of a teenager dressed as a possible gang member is a gross injustice."

In other "Only in Florida" news:

Woman banned from public pool for wearing custom mermaid tail

LITHIA, Fla. (AP) — A woman has been banned from swimming in her community’s pool because she wants to wear a blue, silicone mermaid tail.

Jenna Conti, who lives in a subdivision east of downtown Tampa, had been in the community pool with her custom-made tail once before with the staffÂ’s okay.

Conti, who calls herself Eden Sirene while in the water, has a custom-made silicon mermaid tail. While her dream is to swim at the Florida Aquarium, she said she wanted to swim with the kids at the FishHawk Ranch community pool.

But last week, the community leaders told her it violated a policy against swim fins. On Monday night, the FishHawk Community Development board voted to keep her out of the pool because of the swim fin policy. The story has gained worldwide interest since a resident of the community posted photos of Conti in the pool on Facebook...

Okay, it's been ages since I've been to a public pool, but WTF is a "swim fin?"   Story's linked at Drudge, btw.

No, Bishop, I don't imagine you do.  You're missing the point though.

It's easy for black parents to say, 'That could have been my kid and it feels personal.'

The problem with that mindset is that it's blaming the victim.  (In Trayvon's case, he was not a victim in anything more than a technical sense, but that is beside the point.)  You wouldn't ask a rape victim why she was walking alone at night, nor would you point out that dating three men over a few months cast her character in a bad light.

If you'd like to tell parents what they can tell their children, tell them this:  Don't walk through strange neighborhoods at night, in the rain.  Work hard, do your best to care for those less fortunate than yourself, and tell the truth always.

You might need to bump the advertised compensation to get a good replacement.  What does the current one cost you and the business in terms of wasted time, aggravation, and lost opportunity costs?  Add half of that amount to the replacement's advertised comp.

That person probably thought s/he was complying with all that advice out there to address a resume to specific people and the specific people are Frank, David and/or Nancy. Yesterday we had fun with meeting times. Every single person who had an appointment showed up either 20 minutes early or 20 minutes late. At least the late people all called to let us know. Apparently there was a big accident so traffic was backed up most of the day so even the people who left in plenty of time ended up being late. The people who were early? Each and every one of them got all huffy that the lawyer couldn't see them now even though they were early. Right. Because, you see, when we set up those specific times, we mean sure sure come down whenever you want.

I have no doubt.   But the thing I love about it is that it means UNION TEACHERS WILL BE FIRED.

This is just...

Citing a $1 billion budget deficit, Chicago Public Schools will lay off more than 2,000 employees, more than 1,000 of them teachers, the district said Thursday night.

About half of the 1,036 teachers being let go are tenured.   The latest layoffs, which also include 1,077 school staff members, are in addition to 855 employees — including 420 teachers — who were laid off last month as a result of the district's decision to close 49 elementary schools and a high school program....

378 >>"I heard an African American father on the radio yesterday talk about how he had to have the “talk” with his teenage son. The “talk” is common in African American families where parents tell children to expect to be treated differently and singled out. I don’t know of many Caucasian families that need to give this “talk”. Obviously, Trayvon's parents never had this talk. Had he expected to be treated differently his first reaction would probably not have been to attack the person he thought was singling him out but rather to be prepared to diffuse the situation by responding like a rational human being. But perhaps you should tell your Bishop that he is flat wrong about white parents not having the "talk" with their kids. Up until very recently, I lived in a major metropolitan area. The area I lived in was pretty upscale (and incredibly diverse with folks from literally all over the world). There was no racial profiling that I ever saw or heard of but you can bet your bippy there was lots of criminal type profiling. Because it is an affluent area home break ins are the biggest crime issue and everyone, cops, store owners and residents, are always on the lookout for the criminal element, of all pigment types. But every white parent I knew was very clear with their kids that there were certain sections of the city you did not go if you were white. Forget the night, not in the light of the brightest day of the year. And it wasn't the cops or authorities you had to watch out for it was the residents. Ask your Bishop if he really wants this open conversation on race. If so, ask him if he wants to have it in Harlem, of East St. Louis, or South Central LA. At night. I doubt he really wants to have a real conversation.

So much for thanks: As the U.S. accelerates its exit from a decadelong, $100 billion reconstruction effort in Afghanistan, American generosity is getting an unwelcome penalty in the form of taxes and fees imposed by President Hamid KarzaiÂ’s government on U.S. contractors supporting the rebuilding effort.

Everything from exiting military equipment and food for troops to new federal contract dollars are facing levies, customs fees and fines — a wave of taxation estimated to slice $1 billion or more off the top of aid that was supposed to go to the Afghan people. Instead, it’s going into the coffers of the Karzai government...

There're consultants for everything.

Rich parents hire play-date consultants to help kids play better...

NY Post: http://newyorkpost.com/p/news/local/muffy_can_play_AP6ELbpb1BiTQgonhOrCTJ

It’s pay to play — for kids!

Posh Manhattan moms and dads are taking parental obsessiveness to new heights — by hiring $400-an-hour recreation “experts” to organize play dates for their children.

These pricy pre-planned play times are monitored by instructors who teach them the proper way to socialize with their well-heeled peers in order to maximize their chances of getting into New YorkÂ’s elite private schools.

“Some kids need a little bit more work” at learning how to play, said Suzanne Rheault, the CEO of one of the firms that organize play dates, called Aristotle Circle. “Sometimes [parents] hear from our experts that there are some areas to improve.”...

I should be a consultant.   I could    be a   "How to   invent new and exciting insults"   consultant.   I'd make millions.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Another year, another round of exaggeration from President Barack Obama and his administration about health insurance rebates.

The only Sibelius getting any play is the dumb scrunt trying to run HHS. Hell, living in Arkansas, I can't find a decent sauna in August. 511 Are play dates just something that happens in cities? When I was growing up, everyone went to a public or catholic school in their neighborhood. There was never a shortage of kids to play with on your own block. A neighbor had her kids in some expensive Jewish nursery school. Every night after dinner at this time of year, my mom would send all 4 of us kids out with containers to collect dandelions, mustard greens, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, burdock (which she called "cardoons") hickory nuts, walnuts, staghorn sumac...etc. etc. you get the idea. I've gone back to foraging recently, a pleasant throwback to my yoot and a great way to connect with nature and get some exercise. I tell you what, a couple of wild raspberries pack more flavor than a whole flat from the supermarket.

Veggie Tales was my eldest son's go-to videos/music.  I first heard them when he was initially in the hospital for chemo.  The video had some kind of Silly Song countdown. When they got to the last two songs, Pa Grape realized that one of them had him in it and one didn't, and he obviously wanted to rig the voting.  He asked if " Have we counted ALL the votes, including these ones that I just found in the closet?  After all, we wouldn't want to deny the will of the people."

We needed to call housekeeping to clean up all the grape juice I and my visiting buddy spewed all over the room. This was in 2002, and I was immediately hooked.

138.Similarly civil rights complaints about each and every person/institution with whom you interact who insults you, or just doesn't treat you like frickin' royalty.

I saw this first hand in the mid-80s. our black union that wasn't technically a union but still negotiated separately had a lawyer for president. he initiated an EEOC complaint every other day. then, when it came time to promote the whites, females and Hispanics that actually excelled on open, competitive exams, he went to the left leaning local paper and cried racism. the headline? "discrimination complaints skyrocket in x-department". the solution was to create new, superfluous staff positions and fill them from the bottom of the register (where a passing score in the 50s just happened to place enough blacks to "qualify" the test as non-discriminatory) with his constituents. His MO is now SOP for grievance groups countrywide.

I grew up in a Jewish neighborhood in NYC in the late '50's--early '60s, when the Holocaust still hung like a dark shadow over every Jew. We were frequently told, both at home and in Hebrew school, that we must always be exemplary in our behavior, so that "THEY" wouldn't be able to find an excuse to repeat the Holocaust. There's a lot of blame the victim in this advice--and in fact most German Jews WERE exemplary Germans--but it was probably one of the things that led to so much Jewish prosperity in the US. I wonder how this compares to the advice given by black parents to their kids today. (And I'm afraid that it is true that blacks are more likely to be singled out ,but I suspect that this is because of the thuggish behavior embraced by a part of the black community, which has been romanticized and glorified by the Left for almost 50 years.)

Can't Liz Cheney go after someone other than Mr. Enzi? Look at his voting record--it is mostly quite solid.

Late to the party.

Good for Colorado and the recall drive. I live in WI and had to live through that bullshit for 2 years involving my Governor Scott Walker and my State Senator Terry Moulton. Its about time what is good for the goose is good for the gander. Fuck 'em and beat 'em like a rented mule.

Have a great weekend Horde.

579 If the blogger wanted to actually have something done about the ranting federal employee, then it should've been sent to the Inspector General for that agency so there'd be a formal referral to the agency's management that would have to be acted upon.

580 Detroit should send shutters down the spines of legislators in California

581 "Mike Enzi is on par with Corker and Hoeven." Mike Enzi voted against amnesty and TARP. Not sure Liz Cheney would have. In fact, she almost certainly would not have bucked any Bush spending, since her father said "deficits don't matter" and her husband was the appointed general counsel for Bush's OMB. She is also pro-choice and pro-gay marriage. Basically, Wyoming would be losing the most conservative senator after Tom Coburn, Ron Johnson and Mike Crapo, according to the most recent National Journal rankings, and gaining a carpetbagger whose "hard-line conservatism" is on par with Lisa Murkowski's. I like Liz Cheney, but not in this race. If she wanted to help the team, she should have jumped in the VA primary to challenge Mark Warner. McDonnell is in big trouble, and Cuccinelli is a weak candidate. Instead, she is damaging the Wyoming GOP and the national party with this bizarre, narcissistic infighting. Face it, she wanted a coronation, not a tough fight. I don't get this "committed fighter" campaign of hers.

582 Just got back from the weekly grocery haul at Walmart. My wife bought some sort of alcoholic drink and the register actually prompts "Is customer under 40?" I could have been a douchebag and acted like it was the fault of the poor guy scanning groceries for $8 an hour, but why act like a pussy to the person that doesn't have a say in whether or not they check for ID. If they want to be employed, they follow directions at the till.

583 Wegmans has to proof everybody who buys any form of alcohol, 100% of the time, zero exceptions. Even if you're a hundred years old. I know that the cashiers have to do it or lose their jobs, and I begrudge no one their jobs, so I don't make any deal out of it. A lot of them apologize to you under their breath.

584 Pres Obama just stated that Martin could have been justified in "standing his ground" on that sidewalk because Zimmerman was following him, if Martin had a weapon. Wow.

"I heard an African American father on the radio yesterday talk about how he had to have the “talk” with his teenage son. The “talk” is common in African American families where parents tell children to expect to be treated differently and singled out. I don’t know of many Caucasian families that need to give this “talk”.

Ugh.  Take a guess who the bishop heard.  None other than Steadman Holder at his NAALCP speech a couple days ago.  This is definitely a case of "Shoot the messenger.   Please!"

586 592 Morseus,

Which is a willful misrepresentation of the law...

Martin was a guest, Martin was a minor, and Martin was the aggressor...

Obama is an evil asshole.

Actually, the Detroit Institute of Arts has one of the most magnificent collections of art anywhere, ranging from antiquities to Old Masters to all the 20th Century schools, plus decorative arts like pottery, textiles, and jewelry.  What is really maddening is that money from the awful suburbs is what has been keeping them afloat.  It's even got iconic Diego Rivera murals inside that some idiots want to take down and sell.

They've had Democrats and Big Labor ruining Detroit for half a century now.  The city council morons keep asking for money, not understanding that you need to GENERATE money to keep a city alive.  This is what Giuliani had to explain over and over to NY libs -- stop scaring money away!  Maybe one day the Motor City will get its Giuliani.  Perhaps young entrepreneurs can revive it one building at a time.  There's so much worth keeping!
