— Gabriel Malor Happy Monday.
It's looking a lot like pilot error. NTSB isn't saying for sure yet, but there's no reported or observed mechanical failure and the pilot only had 43 hours of flying time on the 777. "The plane was travelling 'significantly below' its intended speed and its crew tried to abort the landing just seconds before it hit the seawall in front of the runway."
Cash-strapped cities are seeing Obamacare as way to unload retiree health costs on the U.S. taxpayer.
Islamists attempted to storm the army barracks where former president Morsi is being held. Some people are dead (the number keeps changing), and the Muslim Brotherhood is calling for an uprising. The Muslim Brotherhood, as is classic for this type of thing, claims that they were engaged merely in peaceful prayer when they were shot at by the army.
Eliot Spitzer is running for NYC comptroller . . . against his former madam. What is it with these people? Is there seriously nothing else the Spitzers and Weiners of the world can do except run for office?
Animated sequel Despicable Me 2 beat the stuffing out of Gore Verbinski's the Lone Ranger at the box office this weekend. The masked vigilante's $48.9 million haul doesn't seem so bad except that the film cost over $250 million to make, not including promoting costs.
The Hill joins the chorus of Beltway media outlets noting that Obama has to turn things around or his second term is gonna be a big fat failure. National Journal's Josh Kraushaar had perhaps the best of these pieces so far, "Obama's Crisis of Competence."

Bring it on. Every legal gun owner in the state of Florida should prepare for the possibility of riots and have some sort of plan of action. If a mob sees a group of armed citizens ready to defend their homes and businesses they might think twice.
Every sheriff or police chief should announce that anyone - white or black or plaid - who decides to smash and grab as justice for Trayvon will have their heads ventilated. And be ready to back that up with deadly force. It's long past time the thug community got told in no uncertain terms that the rest of us are sick of being cowed into submission because of the threat of a riot.

Conservative advocacy group American Action Network will unveil a new television ad Monday titled “Surge,” highlighting the provisions in the so-called border surge plan included in the Senate legislation that passed last month.
The ad touts Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush as “conservative leaders” who back the border surge, and it calls the measure the “tough border security America needs.”
“The conservative border surge plan is tough, enforceable, takes away discretion from the Obama administration, and that would finally secure the border,” Dan Conston, the group’s communications director, said in a statement to be released later Monday. “We hope Americans call their congressperson and tell them to support the conservative plan to secure the border.”

I'm actively rooting for the death of the big Hollywood blockbuster concept, so I don't mind at all.
I did see World War Z over the weekend. Big budget. They should have made a smaller budget movie, or made something closer to the book. That would have been nice. Instead, we got Brad Pitt's serious face for two hours, and gaggles of cgi "zombies" that may or may not have been zombies.

Eliot Spitzer is running for NYC comptroller . . . against his former madam. What is it with these people? Is there seriously nothing else the Spitzers and Weiners of the world can do except run for office?
Nope. They are talentless, useless sacks of meat. So of course they're only qualified for politics.
It's looking a lot like pilot error. NTSB isn't saying for sure yet, but there's no reported or observed mechanical failure and the pilot only had 43 hours of flying time on the 777.
I know nothing about what it takes to become a pilot on a commercial airliner, but I always assumed it would require closer to 100 hours, at the very least. A nice, large, triple digit number. I don't know that it would make much difference, but it would be enough of a sop to keep the ignorant passengers like me from fussing. I can't be alone in thinking 43 hours is awfully short for such a sizeable aircraft.

Animated sequel Despicable Me 2 beat the stuffing out of Gore Verbinski's the Lone Ranger at the box office this weekend. The masked vigilante's $48.9 million haul doesn't seem so bad except that the film cost over $250 million to make, not including promoting costs.
Nothing about the "Lone Ranger" trailers or posters that I've seen have given me any idea A) what the hell the plot is or B) whether or not they stayed true to the Good Guy in the White Hat archetype that was the Lone Ranger's governing idiom. Not to mention having Johnny Depp slathered head to toe in black and white body paint might SOUND alluring, but it doesn't really work like that.
Odds that Hollywood abandons its "tent pole films starring guaranteed-returns A-list celebrities" model of filmmaking? Still holding steady at zero. They don't care about the domestic market.

Of course they were. Don't you reichwingers know that Islam is the religion of PEACE?

Ten thousand hours in a 777 cockpit wouldn't make up for two minutes of brain fade.
Granted, there are differences between the control layouts of, say, a 747, 777 and a DC-3. That was true with all the light aircraft in which I had some flying time, too.
But a competent pilot could fly any damn one of them, especially on a relatively calm CAVU day. This was not a situation where the pilot had to respond to some catastrophic issue. All he had to do was fly the damned plane.
I was surprised to hear Sullenberger say the NTSB would have to investigate the shutdown of the airport's landing-assist system, as if that might have been a major factor. If the pilot can't land an airplane all by his lonesome under average conditions he should not be in the left seat.

More book balancing at the expense of the federal government. I like that many states have Balanced Budget rules, but until the federal government also has one, it's pretty F'ing meaningless.

47% of babies studied have flat spots on heads
An education campaign launched in 1992 to have healthy babies sleep on their backs is credited with a 50% decrease in the infant mortality rate in the U.S. from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
But along with the decline has come greater awareness of a condition called positional plagiocephaly, in which an infant's head is flattened or misshapen, from too much time in the back position in the first months of life.

This is Commiefornia we're talking about. A public sector organization in Commiefornia. You can be sure that the drivers of that vehicle were selected for reasons other than operational competence. Ticking the right box on the "diversity" mix is what matters here. Actual ability to perform the job hired for does not matter at all.

I remember it being said that the Axis particularly hated American troops, because a) American troops had no problem targeting officers and b) You could kill the American Officers and the troops would keep trying to reach their objective. Those were (I'm told) 180 degrees off the way the rest of the world did it.
We don't so much have a "line of command" as a "Oh, fine, if you insist" of command.
The American army has such a thing as a "Battlefield Commission" ( see Murphy, Audie) the rest of the world - not so much. Americans have always been an enterprising bunch - even in the military. Somebody has to lead in combat - so an American will do what is required.
Posted by: [/i] [/s] [/u] [/b] . An Observation at July 08, 2013 05:19 AM (ylhEn)
The Wehrmacht actually were the first major army to routinely plan to handle combat losses of officers, something that started long before WWII. Subordinates were trained from the very first day to be able to smoothly step in to command. And they did.
German officers also overwhelmingly thought the American army to be poorly officered and incompetently led. What they disliked about fighting Americans was the absolutely unending flow of U.S. material and weapons that they just could do nothing about. It's tough to beat an enemy when that enemy will routinely soak up losses at a rate of 7 or 8 to 1 (as was common in American v. German armor battles) and still be able to sustain the fight.

When I was ten years old, I was home alone and heard a noise. I didn't know that some kid on the other side of some idiot conflict had claimed my older brother had a gun and somebody had called the police. I stepped out of my room to find a Ventura County Sheriff's deputy at the other end of the hall doing the full Hogan's Alley pose, ready to shoot me.
He had me come into the living room and my sister's dog, a smallish Great Dane, was in the back yard and becoming very upset. I went to try to calm the dog and the Deputy Jackass threatened to shoot him if I didn't succeed.
I suppose I could have developed a very negative attitude about cops in general. Ventura County certainly wasn't hiring the cream of the crop back then.
