Happy Monday.

Donald Trump was on ABC's "This Week" yesterday, where he flirted with birtherism again, suggesting that maybe President Obama's birth certificate was fake and, oh, that Sen. Cruz is ineligible for the presidency because he was born in Canada. Trump was in Iowa over the weekend at the invitation of the Family Leadership Summit, along with Cruz and Rick Santorum. Trump gave the keynote.

The Obama Administration is ordering prosecutors to omit listing quantities of illegal substances in indictments for drug cases so as to avoid mandatory minimum sentencing laws.

2 Good Morning Morons.  Today is Monday, August 12, 2013.  On this day in 1851 Isaac Singer patented the sewing machine.  My great grandmother had one very similar to the one he patented except that it was mounted on a wooden cabinet with a folding sideboard.  It was operated by a foot treadle at the base.

He might be okay at firing people and reducing the size and expense of government, but with a couple bankruptcies under his belt I don't really trust his financial acumen all that much. Turner Classic Movies has a wonderful 3-volume DVD set out called Forbidden Hollywood, a collection of pre-Code movies including Night Nurse, Three On A Match and one of my faves, Barbara StanwyckÂ’s gleefully immoral Baby Face.  Once the Production Code (also known as the Hays Code) came in, writers and directors had to be more circumspect in what they showed, in order not to have their films chopped to pieces by various state censorship boards. 

 

 

After the “sexual revolution” of the 1960s, where every bare ass and every “fuck” found a home in movies, many of the older directors and actors insisted that the Code made for better movies – suggestion being more satisfying than display.  But while the Code was in use, their attitudes were a little different. 

 

 

For example, in Bette DavisÂ’ 1949 film Beyond the Forest, the script called for her to visit an abortion clinic to get rid of her unwanted baby.  But the censors insisted that the clinic sign in the scene be replaced with a sign reading PSYCHIATRIST.  Both Davis and director King Vidor were disgusted by the change.  “I donÂ’t think that fooled anybody,” said Vidor.  “It was still obvious that she was trying to get rid of her baby.”

 

 

Then there was the experience of Rex Harrison and Lilli Palmer, performing in the film adaptation of their stage hit The Four Poster.  Like Rob and Laura Petrie, the stars were forbidden to appear in a double bed together, and if one was in bed, the other had to have one foot on the floor.  Harrison and Palmer put up with that, but the censors cut one exchange that had always gone over big with live audiences: after Palmer (on her wedding night) is in bed watching new husband Harrison take off his slippers, she says nervously, “IÂ’ve never seen a man. . .uh, completely. . .”  “Well,” Harrison replies calmly, “you havenÂ’t missed much.” 

 

 

The two stars protested to Motion Picture Code chief Eric Johnston.  “ThereÂ’s nothing immoral about that!” they cried.  “YouÂ’re right,” Johnston agreed.  “On moral grounds, we wouldnÂ’t have touched it.”

 

 

“Then why on earth was it cut?” Harrison asked.

 

 

“We had to cut it on religious grounds,” answered the censor.  “Because man is made in the LordÂ’s image, you understand?”

Trump's point is that as citizens, we have a right to ask the questions when someone runs for office.  His position is that "he doesn't know" if Obama or Cruz is a citizen.  Let the truth come out.

But they have to propose the amendments at the convention.  The legislature has to ratify. That IS an Art V convention.   However, it depends on the Red States sending "Red" delegates which I believe they would.  I think it would work because there are more Red States than Blue and each State only gets one vote.



The problem will come later when it takes 3/4 of the State to ratify any changes.

101 The one successful minor league stadium I can think of is the Toledo Mudhens.  The county owns the team but amazingly they hired someone competent to run the team and stadium.  The stadium is great, prices are reasonable, and they sell out fairly often.  So, it can be a success.

I don't know if the major leagues are dying.  I don't think it is going to be the national sport ever again.  It does seem to be turning in the white guy sport.  Plus they need to shorten the season so that the playoffs start in August with the World Series starting/ending the first week of October.

The idea behind an Article V convention is that amendments are immediately ratified by the States without them having to go through Congressional/Presidential approval.  It's not rewriting the entire Constitution, but rather a means to amend the Constitution without going through the entity charged with abiding by it.

 

I have my own doubts on the idea - for instance, I don't think the problem is our Constitution but the people we send to Washington.  If we have to idiot-proof the Constitution from our own elected people then we're too far gone for a raft of amendments to make much difference anyway.

Being well into my 6th decade, I was not at all shocked by West's assertians or suggestions.

One of which I believe was that not only secrets were passed, but also processed uranium.

However, the book can stand or fall on it's own merits.

What blew my mind was the sickening cabal of credentialists mentioned above that just smeared West personally, Horrowitz even black hole "disappearing" an initial positive review on his own blog after receiving his marching orders.

The take I had from the excerpts (have only read THEM so far), was that she raised questions based on documented revelations of infiltration of FDR's crew.

Some of Breitbart's headlines may have been interpreted as statements by West.

But again, what really got my attention was the reaction, tactics and people involved in the attempted take down, which arguably would be unnecessary if the book was pure fantasy.

She also draws parallels to the tactics used by the MB today.

Most people home school to give their kids a chance at a better education than the public schools,  and in many cases to also include moral and religious teaching.  Catholic parents in our parish sometimes home school because they cannot afford the school fees.

The Santorums are apparently wealthy,  since they live in that huge house in Fairfax.  There is no shortage of Catholic schools in the area.  Karen Santorum is not a teacher who would be thinking "I am trained to do this". SO I do not understand why they do not send their kids to Catholic schools.

This is a legitimate question.  Are they really cash-strapped and that is why she does it?   Does Santorum insist she home schools the children so as to build up cred with the home school voters?

This is not a criticism of home schoolers.  It is the flat-out statement that there is something odd in the whole family dynamic.

187 @Miss Marple, I can't speak for the Santorums but as a Catholic who home schools I can say that while our choice to keep our kids hone versus putting them in the parish school was initially based on money, I have since found that the education I am providing a home is, frankly, a much better one than my eldest (who was in Catholic school for one year) received at the parish school. Liberalism has infected even the Catholic schools. And it is especially so in the area of religion. Most Catholic schools are still pretty decent in the academics, although that can vary between parishes. But unless you're going to a parish school that is hard-core ultra-traditionalist the religious I structure your child is going to get there is likely to be lacking. It was certainly not what I was expecting my son to receive and I'm much happier with what he's learning in our home program.

193 In my experience, the quality of Catholic school education can be uneven although probably better than public schools in many places.

Many of the expensive private Catholic schools are very progressive and heavily into social justice (Merion Mercy Academy - Educating Young Women to Live Mercy and Seek Justice - bleh). As to the local parish schools & high schools, I guess it depends on the diocese and the neighborhood but I would never question any parents that would choose home-schooling over local Catholic schools.
