FRIIIDAAAAAAY.

Big news of the day is going to be WaPo's scoop on last year's NSA audit finding thousands of rule violations. I LOLed at this sentence: "Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who did not receive a copy of the 2012 audit until The Post asked her staff about it, said in a statement..." Heh.

The Atlantic has an outstanding long-form piece on drones, entitled "The Killing Machines: How We Should Think About Drones." It's worth a read.

Virginia man told his wife he was a CIA agent to hide his other wife from her.

Roll Call has an interesting piece about the 3 factors each party is relying on to either keep or take a Senate majority. Aaand, how 'bout a movie trailer instead of a music video?

I don't know why I let myself get my hopes up for decent fantasy fare.

Have a good weekend.

18 Heather Mac Donald Safe Streets, Overruled A judgeÂ’s appalling decision will endanger New YorkÂ’s most vulnerable residents. 13 August 2013 New YorkÂ’s 20-year reprieve from debilitating violence may well be over. Yesterday, U.S. District Judge Shira Scheindlin ruled that the New York Police Department has been willfully targeting blacks and Hispanics for unlawful stop, question, and frisks based on their skin color alone, in violation of the Constitution. She appointed a federal monitor to oversee the department and to develop new policies to end its allegedly biased policing practices. If the monitor adopts Judge ScheindlinÂ’s definition of unconstitutional policing, itÂ’s not too soon for New Yorkers to start looking into relocation plans. http://www.city-journal.org/2013/eon0813hm.html

And this differs from Saint Newt of Gingrich's pronouncement from the mountaintop that we should all be nicer to Choom Boy in what way?

If we all did the impossible and woke up to what President Historic First© and his gang of America-hating thugs  have done to the country over the past five years, people like Teh Noot would find themselves out of a cushy, no-effort job, and what would they do then?

Krauthammer has a piece at NRO today that perfectly illustrates the extent of the Republicans' willingness to bend over for the leftist traitors: he severely chastises Bark Obama for his felonies and then, in the finest Poppin' Fresh tradition, draws no conclusion. In short, like all Our Betters in Washington, Kraut Boy focuses on what is safe and profitable for himself, with no regard for nation.

A very nice girl and our first night went pretty well. She went to bed where I told her to however during the night when I got up to use the bathroom she moved into my spot. Head on pillows on everything. It took some work to get her to move. I found out she had been brought in the day before because of a move to where pets aren't allowed. I feel sorry for her old family, I'm sure they are missing her bunches right now. Husband and daughter 2 are trying really hard to be mad at me and not like her but it's not going so well!

126 "The US must pay Afghanistan huge custom fees to bring our equipment home? Only because we have a pussy in the WH."

From the link,

"The biggest problem, since Afghanistan is landlocked, is that the U.S. must fly the equipment out or pay exorbitant customs fees to Afghanistan and Pakistan. The cost of moving the containers alone could reach $237 million, officials estimate. 'At some point, actually it becomes more sensible to destroy that equipment in place than to actually bring it back,' said Hasik. ThatÂ’s exactly what the Pentagon is doing with some 2,000 of the massive eight-ton troop carriers known as MRAPS. Each MRAP cost taxpayers more than $1 million, but with 24,000 already in the Army inventory, officials decided it was more cost effective to scrap 2,000 of the vehicles in Afghanistan rather than bring them home."

Of course, the biggest proponent of the military buying this huge number of white-elephant vehicles was Joey Choo-Choo.

We can expect Biden next to advocate building high speed rail so that the things can be moved more expeditiously.

By the way, the 747 freighter that crashed at Bagram a few weeks ago, killing everyone on board, was carrying MRAPs.

128 @116

SarahW, I don't really think basketball is officially considered a "contact sport" and the small schools around here don't have field hockey or similar sports for girls -- it's pretty much just volleyball, basketball, track/field/cross country, and softball, other than a couple of schools that have soccer, which I'm not sure Liberty Union does...

Not for nothing, but this is Ohio, and even the twinky middle-schoolers and junior high kids around here will hit, if they've been properly coached. If this girl wants to kick, that's one thing, but if she's planning on playing full-contact, I don't think that's the best idea, considering the way boys in that cadre (7th/8th grade) start packing on muscle and size and hitting...

132 14 The US must pay Afghanistan huge custom fees to bring our equipment home? Only because we have a pussy in the WH. -- The US tax payers paid huge taxes to fund the costs to take the equipment into Afghanistan, to use it in Afghanistan, and to bring it from Afghanistan. As if our experience there proved any "better" than the USSR's "liberating" the Afghans from Afghanistan. Chalk it up: Karzai/Bush-Obama Neoconservative Rules of Engagement, "Nation Building." It's good for military-industrial corporatism. It's easy to show a "profit" when your financing is not from private investors but usurps public tax funds. All the "investment" funding the expenses came from taxing Americans. Same thing, we American citizens are funding fraud and bribes with nothing productive to show for our burdens at home and abroad. When Bill Kristol admitted on Fox News Sunday that nation building proved to be a huge fiasco, who took notice? Forgetaboutit/ The US taxpayers are not paying the Afghan people anything, only providing financial bonuses for the corrupt oligarchs. And it isn't as if "our guy" Karzai is our guy, or ever was. He certainly won't ever be anything beyond his own opportunistic player, laughing all the way to the bank. It takes dimwits to expect good from evil. Stop perpetuating such spawn. Cut the unnatural umbilical cord that the big titty baby corporatist moguls constructed, draining Americans dry as 'proof' of corporate profits.

Legalize heroin by prescription but insist that all product be sourced domestically.

Watch the Afghan drug economy take an agonizingly painful and crippling mule kick to the nuts. They'll never recover after losing their biggest export market.

And fuck, it's not like we're doing a splendid job keeping foreign heroin out of U.S. junkies' hands as it is. The rate of addiction here is skyrocketing. In parts of America today, heroin has become a bigger drug of abuse -- and hence a bigger cash cow for Karzai and his ilk -- than meth.

Yeah, but Filner is addicted to abusing his power, and seems to get off wielding it over any female he can. So sexual attraction wouldn't really be a factor (like it's not a factor when some thug rapes and mugs a senior citizen). He's sick, but it's not something 1 week ate a rehab center could fix.

===========

Growing poppies in the US and US drug policy has got nothing to do with it.

Crippling their economy is a nice touch, but that doesn't  really make a statement with which your average Afghan can identify.  In the end all these animals understand is force- and chemical weapons can make a nice display of force that is quieter and cleaner than other alternatives which I would not recommend.

We are civilized people after all...

181 I think Filner really thought his attention to women was flattering to them. He was not going to sleep with grandma. He thought by treating her like she was a young thing made her feel good. I blame a lot of this on the fact that it appears many of the women tolerated his bad behavior or did not kick him in the nuts. Also, all the men around him never said anything to him? Anyway, I don't want to see him resign. Let the donks wallow in it. Let them spend big bucks trying to get him out. I want their misery to be prolonged. 198 "126 "The US must pay Afghanistan huge custom fees to bring our equipment home? Only because we have a pussy in the WH."

From the link,

"The biggest problem, since Afghanistan is landlocked, is that the
U.S. must fly the equipment out or pay exorbitant customs fees to
Afghanistan and Pakistan. The cost of moving the containers alone could
reach $237 million, officials estimate. 'At some point, actually it becomes more sensible to destroy that
equipment in place than to actually bring it back,' said Hasik. ThatÂ’s exactly what the Pentagon is doing with some 2,000 of the
massive eight-ton troop carriers known as MRAPS. Each MRAP cost
taxpayers more than $1 million, but with 24,000 already in the Army
inventory, officials decided it was more cost effective to scrap 2,000
of the vehicles in Afghanistan rather than bring them home."

Posted by: torquewrench at August 16, 2013 07:53 AM (gqT4g)"

Sell the MRAPs to China for a dollar a piece.  Afghanistan shares a border with China.  Drive them just over the border and park them.

As for trains in Afghanistan, that actually would have been a good idea several years ago.  Much better than trying to win hearts and minds.  Build rail lines north from Kabul to each of the Stans and south from Kabul through Jalalabad to the Khyber Pass and through Kandahar to Baluchistan.  Then for extra fun build a a line from Kabul east to the Chinese border and west to the border with Iran.

The rail network would be valuable to China and give them a reason to want to run Afghanistan.  A rail line from China to Iran would also give them the logistics to support an occupation army in Iran if we were to Invade the place and then hand it over to China.  The knowledge that that is a possibility would serve to moderate the behavior of the Persians.

It won't just be California.  I was living in Arizona when Judge William Wayne Justice was conducting his reign of terror by ordering the release of dangerous felons in Texas.  Every time he did this, there would be a wave of violent crime that would hit Arizona a week and a half to two weeks later and the perpetrators had just been released from prisons in Texas.  It got to the point where the news would report Texas prison releases sort of like hurricane warnings.

I seriously recommend that anybody who lives within 1000 miles of California go armed if you have a concealed carry permit for a month or so, even if you don't usually carry.  Keep a loaded gun available in your home for the first month or so after one of these court ordered mass releases.

250 150. If only that alignment were limited to the POTUS's personal affiliation. Don't get stuck staring at one tree in the forest. Obama didn't "suddenly" happen as he was produced without acknowledging his mother's and grandparents' affiliation with the CIA.* The CIA involvement messing in the ME is as old as the CIA, and in that, continues over time to prove incompetence, blow back from one administration's expedient interventionism outweighing temporary "goal." The CIA certainly has never won America any allies. No matter how much power and funds are provided the CIA, Americans still expect our Constitution's interests to define CIA interests. They do not align. The CIA sole interest is the CIA, no distractions. Since 9/11, the neoconservatives created the top heavy, abusive authoritarian governance crushing our Constitutional Governance and erasing the gnosis of Inalienable Rights from public record, from individual awareness and/or appreciation. You'd think people would notice. I dare say that pharmaceuticals help the Ministry of Truth convert the "population" to the "advantages" of abandoning "citizenship." Ironically, the Patriot Act, Homeland Security, Amnesty, (IRS) et al., all are provisions of UNACCOUNTABILITY. "It's all for our own good."

288 And leave Israel alone? And abandoning the Suez Canal, wrecking the world economy? Let fanatics take over the oil? Allow China to gain influence and control? No, don't leave Israel alone. Continue to sell/give them weapons and materiel. But (until fairly recently, at least- and it may even still be true) we've been doing much more protecting the Islamic Bloc from Israel than the other way around. The 6 Days War is evidence that Israel could have defended herself. If we'd allowed her to, we might (only might) not be having the problems we are today. As for the Suez? We're not keeping the peace between Egypt and Israel, they are. We weigh in from time to time, but they're the primary parties there. We get very little oil from the Middle East ourselves. If we would quit hamstringing ourselves regarding fossil fuels, "fanatics" wouldn't have to worry us. How are we stopping China now? We aren't opposing them militarily. We use diplomacy and trade (and the sure knowledge that we can blow them all up if we have to). Note that I'm not advocating complete isolationism, here. I'm saying that there's no need to send US Troops to the Middle East to "keep the peace." It gets good boys and girls killed, and doesn't keep the peace anyway. If you're going to send the military, have an objective, complete it, and leave.

But I do actually remember his record. He was conservative on some issues, not so much on others. He was about as conservative as he could be but he also had to deal with Congress and play the hand he was given. The middle east has been a snake pit of tribalism, religious fanaticism and war since this country was founded and nobody has figured out the proper way to defuse it yet. I sympathize with the "turn it into glass " theory but in reality it is never going to happen. So we will continue to lurch back and forth between engagement and isolation and neither of those policies will work for long. Never has, never will.

Isn't it?

Labels are sometimes imperfect instruments. I simply see no reason to expend an ounce of my life or time any longer defending corporate America's ability to do as it sees fit. Want to do amnesty? Fiiiinnnne. By all means. Going to tax you for every cent it costs, plus a little extra. Want to leave good Americans on the streets with no jobs? Fiiinnnne. But we aren't going to have paupers begging either.

Many in *corporate* America did in fact build much of what they have. But they did not hew it out of a wilderness, single-handedly, nor could they sustain what they have without others.

Does not mean I believe in the Democratic party of today. I do not. Take, for example, Michelle Nunn of Georgia. My beef with her is that she does not reflect the broad beliefs of the state, she is intentionally trying to hide her own (which broadly reflect prosperous Huff-Post-reading Democrats of Atlanta)--but once in office...

Nunn is basically trying to fool the people, in my opinion--to present such a bland, non-offensive appearance so as to nullify the idea that elections are referendums on direction by the people. She needs to be a little forthright on what she actually thinks, instead of just trying to win. I thus do not respect her.

But, back to the subject--overall, if corporate America wishes to continue as it is, I'm not going to waste any more time fighting for those who will sell me out in a heartbeat so as to gain the favor of pols. And that is America today. A corrupt, non-virtuous society and government.

What is needed is balance in all things. We need a way to reduce corruption, crony capitalism, and so on. And, unfortunately, since the Chamber of Commerce-types are willing to sell out liberty and virtue, I can't simply support the GOP and let the CoC types go unmolested. Personal feeling only.

Looking over a 3-year period that includes the 1st first quarter 2010 through second quarter 2013, the data for that quarter are above the average number of incidents reported in any given quarter during that period. The number of incidents in a given quarter during that 3-year period ranged from 372 to 1,162. A variety of factors can cause the numbers of incidents to trend up or down from one quarter to the next.

304 "If you're going to send the military, have an objective, complete it, and leave."

That's insufficient.

Because indisciplined thinkers in government easily get swayed by what they think will be necessary "objectives" that can't actually be accomplished by military means.

Bush got seduced by the "objective" of making Afghanistan into something it has never been in its entire history and will never be: a stable secular modern society which respects the rights of women and non-Islamics.

A shit-ton of good people have since died or been maimed for the sake of chasing that mirage of an "objective".

The "objective" of overseas military use needs to be limited to killing people and breaking things, and saying, "if there's more trouble, we'll be back with more of what we just did".

322 One caveat to this "in-kill-out" usage of the Military- I do understand that terrorists make that more difficult. Because they don't have set locations to defend, and because they are not sovereign governments themselves, getting in to where they are can pose problems. That said- those problems are the area of the State Department: negotiations to get the country in question to let us in or deal with the problem themselves. If diplomacy fails there, well, force can be used if necessary. Also, now that we've given them time to mature, it's harder to locate terrorist training camps and keep tabs on terrorists in general. But that's a problem for the CIA- not the military.

So, I try not to be a conspiracy theorist; I really do.   But this    "administration" is so shady, so duplicitous, so underhanded in all its dealings, that   even   things I would otherwise consider wildly outlandish seem plausible.     That's why listening to Jeff Kuhner this morning as he sketched out the theory for Michael Hastings' death being a CIA assassination,  I didn't roll my     eyes and go, "Sure, Jeff.  Whatever."     Rather, I found myself nodding along and saying,  "Brennan    probably got the go-ahead from Ratface the Iranian."

I dunno. There was a better attempt made back in the 1950s when the West and the USSR were both 'courting' them and the nation itself was stable, under its monarchy, IIRC. The troubles began with the USSR getting the upper hand, and the Soviet invasion was to support the Communists who were being beat back by the populace.

I don't what I would have done without President and Mrs Obama as rule models and as a person of color who cares about other person's of color. When I have my sixth child of color I will be proud to name it Barack (For male baby of color) or Michelle (For a female babby of color). I also found out I don't need a man to help me because President Obama is here to help raise my children of color and thus gives me more freedom to explore my inner needs. Thank You Presdent Obama for coming into all of our lives. We loves you.

So the FBI raided the Philly Sheriff's Office   yesterday.   Anyone got any clue what that's about?

Philadelphia Business Journal: http://tinyurl.com/plqyx4r

...Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office spokesman Joe Blake released a statement late Thursday afternoon saying, “As part of an ongoing investigation begun in the previous administration, the FBI arrived at the sheriff’s office at 100 S. Broad this morning with a search warrant and subpoena for certain records and files.”

The statement said SheriffÂ’s office employees gave the agents full cooperation and that there would be no further comments from the office due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

The SheriffÂ’s office has been under scrutiny since the tenure of John Green, who resigned in early 2011 after being accused of running an office full of insider dealing and cronyism...

Egypt is falling down like London Bridge, and Bammy is having swanky parties on the Vineyard.

Power-packed Vineyard party for Obama

NY Post: http://tinyurl.com/prcp2hs

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts’ cocktail party for President Barack Obama and wife Michelle in Martha’s Vineyard last night was attended by a host of notables close to the administration. Guests included newly nominated ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy, Obama’s senior adviser Valerie Jarrett, National Security Adviser Susan Rice, Attorney General Eric Holder, former “car czar” Steve Rattner, 32 Advisors’ and member of the president’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board Robert Wolf, lawyer and leading civil rights activist Vernon Jordan. Also there were movie mogul and Obama booster Harvey Weinstein and his wife, Marchesa co-founder Georgina Chapman, Larry David, Carly Simon, Peter Chernin and California Attorney General Kamala Harris...

I can do better.

You know how your brain sort of has a default setting that it resets to when you're not really thinking about anything?   Like when you're focused on a task,    such as    hammering a nail,    so stray thoughts don't really come into play.    But it's not like your brain is QUIET;  it's still keeping itself occupied in the background.   Well MY default setting is random music, playing on an otherwise constant loop in my head.

For the longest time, that "default" music was "Age of Aquarius."  How long you ask?

SIX FUCKING YEARS, that's how long.

All four years of college and two years of work.   OMG.

Just abandon the MRAPs in place. Monuments to Biden's brain fart.

The Afghans will never be able to afford to run the things. Not without Uncle Sugar's hugely expensive fuel convoys. (Getting POL, petroleum/oils/lubricants, into that country in quantity is tremendously costly to do.) These things suck down fuel like nobody's business.

And the Afghans are not a maintenance culture. The MRAPs are total maintenance hogs, requiring massive and constant contractor support and parts airlifts. They'll all be immobile hulks within months of the US leaving. Back to donkey transport for the Afghan "army".

466 I don't like the stop and frisk policy. Years ago I got the treatment because I had long hair and a smile on my face. The cop just did it as a buzzkill. When I asked him why he stopped me he claimed I "resembled a suspect" and drove off. I tried asking him who was the "suspect" and what was he wanted for. The cop told me "none of your business" as he drove away. I'm tired of the militarization of cops, their penchant for shooting dogs, their beating up people who film them and especially their feeling that they are above the law. This stop and frisk policy was enacted by King Bloomberg. It's just an invitation for police harassment. Giuliani did a much better job cleaning up NYC without enacting policies that violated the 4th Amendment.

489 294. admittedly, I'm posting my thoughts before catching up with the comments since 9:17 Neoconservative interventionism has a prime disregard for national sovereignty, which blows back onto ourselves when we attack a nation, "Because I Could." Our own politicians and bureaucrats have hijacked our Constitutional Republic from governing our nation. Our government officials deny inalienable rights. "We The People" are deemed cattle, certainly not citizens by whom the government governs. Our "citizenship" is melting in the authoritarian pot, smelted down with all peoples of the earth, here or elsewhere, as fodder. Nietzsche was right when noting that if you pursue the dragon intently, at some point you become what you pursue. Jesus wasn't the only wise man warning people to take care when deciding what to treasure. When you become terrorists in order to fight terrorists, there's no difference. In short, THAT illustrates the moral fallacy of a self righteous war on terror, which term itself is illogical (war on tactic). No, I am not saying that self defense is evil. Not at all. National Defense of borders, territory and citizens IS the purpose for government. Since 9/11, we Americans have been re-evaluation our circumstances. But we allowed ourselves to relent for authoritarian bureaucracy labeled "Patriot Act" as if "In Politicians We Trust". Gullible is bad enough. But downright bigotry is far worse, ridiculing those demanding public records be released for public accountability, 9/11 Commissioner's Report entire files still kept in the dark, "in order to not affect electoral results" election after election... I am saying that the US Government and military-industrial complex have taken interventionist warfare into the realm of universal insanity. Destruction of all for profit, paid for by the taxpayers in serfdom. After viewing a series on civilization that Netflix streams, "East To West," the point was clear that initially, Arabic "Islam" shared the same quest for knowledge and expertise in philosophy, arts, innovative science as their genetic relatives the Hebrews -- absorbing cultural advances as they expanded from region to region, and striving through scientific experiments to advance knowledge of the natural world. Coincidentally, Europe was in the Medieval Era, the "Dark Ages" that occurred within the first thousand years of Islamic Empire that treasured literacy and learning. Western Civilization's Dark Ages occurred during Islam's Renaissance. So what the hell went so wrong, and why is everything today twisted with hate, we must go figure. Because genetically and culturally and even religiously, "fundamentally" the Arabs were every bit as inquisitive and proficient in philosophy, sciences and arts, absorbing from cultural empires through time of millenia as their cousins the Jews enjoy in reputation, or as the most brilliant Americans, etc. And prior to Muhammad by 600 years, "fundamentally" the Jesus followers knew that the kingdom of god is in our hearts, that Jesus' kingdom is NOT of this earth -- so there goes Constantine's directive usurping Christianity as his state religion to coerce empire by the sword. And the United States of America "fundamentally" is a Constitutional Republic, though our citizenship and governance are usurped by neoconservative authoritarians regardless of party affiliation, driving America into assimilation as FEUDAL. I think that we're all currently permeated by a global phenomena, perhaps a natural human response to the globalist dictate to assimilate as serfs or die. Each region on earth, in response to that phenomena, wittingly or not, "clings bitterly" to their own tribal "brand" of recent-fundamentalism. ("Fundamentalists" so tagged represent ill informed strong willed dogmatists who fail the mark in terms of the Golden Rule, mutual respect regardless of gender, color or creed.) It's a yin/yang action/reaction: "Resistance is futile, you will assimilate" is the same principle everywhere, no matter the difference in region/race/creed. And no one likes forfeiting their existence in favor for what they find to be corruption/destruction, disdainfully beguiled as "progress" or what an authoritarian mandates to be good for you (that being, whatever profits authoritarians). The Dreamer Has Awakened Constitutional Renaissance '16 Inalienable Rights! sweet

In short, glorying in anyone's agony completely fails to address what's coming down the pike on YOUR head. NYC, CA, or Detroit all are what they are because of themselves, their own decisions have consequences. But don't delude yourself into thinking that somehow you are insulated from fallout. Even if the federal government authoritarians ignore the bankrupt cries for deliverance, the inhabitants who turned places into shit are relocating. And as likely as not, they'll move next door to you. They'll move in a voting block that will nullify whatever normalcy you've managed to maintain to date.

>>>Neoconservative interventionism has a prime disregard for national sovereignty, which blows back onto ourselves when we attack a nation, "Because I Could."

It originated as the idea to export our Revolutionary ideals, popularly "Democracy, whisky, sexy" but more seriously as international Classical Liberalism versus International Communism, a wrinkle in the old Cold War paradigm. As such, I'm completely onboard. What it got perverted into is another matter.

557 "A lot of that is Venezuelan sludge. We are the only country that can refine it, IIRC.

Posted by: fluffy at August 16, 2013 09:20 AM (z9HTb)"

No.  Thanks to the EPA it is not possibly to refine Venezuelan sludge in a US refinery, comply with regulations and make money all at the same time.  Venezuelan sludge is refined on Aruba.  They have essentially no restrictions on emissions as long as the pollution blows out to sea.   There is a prevailing wind that is pretty consistent.  The refineries are all built along the lee shore and the air pollution from those refineries is so severe that it is marked on marine navigation maps.  There are days when if you accidentally sail into one of those downwind pollution areas, you will die.

Evening all.  Did anybody see Rifftrax Live! ream Starship Troopers last night?  I'd forgotten how splendiferously gawdawful, yet hypnotically beautiful, this turkey is on the big screen.  Much like Casper himself!  I busted a gut when they called a gun-toting NPH "Doogie Howitzer".

Best line: Rico (Nelson): "So, doin' anything tonight?" Carmen (Murphy): "Oh, Neve Campbell and Matt Dillon"
