Happy Tuesday.

I've got to run into the office early, so you'll have to amuse yourselves quietly this morning. Here, let's get that bulging vein in your forehead started right with the news that conservative groups are running attack ads against Republicans. Permanent Democratic majority, guys. Feel it.

14 Damn I wish I had checked earlier.

Good Morning Morons.  Today is Tuesday, August 20, 2013.  On this day in 1308 Pope Clement V pardoned Jacques de Molay, the last Grand Master of the Knights Templar, absolving him of charges of heresy.  This is after he had supported the French monarchy burning Molay at the stake and in crushing the order and literally stealing all their lands and wealth. This was not a good time for the reputation of the Pope.   And this BS pardon did little for Molay since he was already dead in an excruciating execution.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.  Thanks for the morning briefing, Vic.

If youÂ’re of a certain age, you know the name of Western star Randolph Scott.  When sound movies first came in, Paramount hired him to be a dialogue coach for Gary Cooper in the 1929 version of The Virginian*.  But while Cooper was a movie veteran by this time, he was intimidated by the whole “talkies” furor, with one scene in particular causing him trouble:  the Virginian (Cooper) has caught his old friend Steve (Richard Arlen) rustling cattle.  Both of them know the posse will have to hang Steve, and they sit on the ground talking mournfully to one another.

But Cooper simply couldnÂ’t do the scene, freezing up every time the clapstick announcing the take was clacked in front of his face.  His mind simply went blank, take after take after take.  Finally, director Victor Fleming called “cut” and told the crew they would try again tomorrow.

The next morning, Arlen came up with a solution.  Since he did the scene with his back to Cooper, why didnÂ’t they just tape the VirginianÂ’s lines to the back of ArlenÂ’s shirt?  They tried it, and the scene suddenly worked: CooperÂ’s eyes are downcast (so he could read his lines) and he speaks hesitantly (as he strained to read).  But on the screen, it looks as if Cooper is overcome with emotion over ArlenÂ’s imminent death.

HereÂ’s Coop with bad guy Walter Huston:

Permanent Democratic majority, guys. Feel it.

I imagine that for some, that would be a dream situation.  None of the responsibility of governing, plenty of time to speak at think tanks and on weekend blab fests about the pernicious influence of the Taliban wing of the GOP taking over the party and still time for a taxpayer-funded dinner at a swanky DC boite with the cherry on top of a pic in the WaPo's  "Style"  section.

As I say - a dream situation.  For some.

So.  You wanna tell me how a GOP House with a Dem Senate and a Dem President can do any more than vote to repeal Obamacare?  What?  Maybe they didn't vote enthusiastically enough?  Maybe if they wished real hard upon a star, the bills would magically get passed by a Dem Senate and signed by Obama?

So, yeah.. punish the incumbents.  Make them answer for their "sloth and cowardice"!  Burn the motherfuckers at the stake!

109 71. J.J., you're right. It's a matter of choice. And it "hurts" to deal with truth because, inevitably, it makes the corrupt uncomfortable. Not that I'll let up to ease their discomfort with scientific evidence or with faith which, today, "enjoys" scientific evidence. (Among other scientific experiments on consciousness, Institute of Noetic Sciences, Dean Radin) Bitter clingers aside, I know that my oldest brother has seen the light illuminating the error of his party's ways, and is contemplating what to make of it all now. Granted, he's not the usual by any means. Our parents saw to our classical liberal outreach growing up. But he IS an established and well regarded leader within his Democratic grassroots state organization with national connections. Vision and disillusionment. Inevitably 'evitable'. As per bitter clingers, nothing "wrong" holding to truths that are self evident. As per "fundamentalists", beware bigotry, regardless of its hue. Calling someone a fundamentalist is calling them a bigot. "Fundamentalism" focuses on imposed boundaries.

110 New NSA spy center in Utah to use 1.7M gallons of water a day in a desert climate!!!!! What insane idiot decided to build this in Utah? If this was a Nuke plant the greens would be foaming at the mouth and gnawing on dirt with their feet kicking. When the last part of HC Floyd stalled over my house, I calculated that 500,000 gallons of water per acre landed on my property. It's early and my math skills could be suspicious at this hour, but I'd guesstimate they're trying to water about 50 acres per day with 1/2'' of water. Or 100 acres with 1/4''. But the 'greens' also hate golf courses, who water just the putting greens (maybe two acres, total) on an occasionally daily basis.

BUT what they should be doing is making noise and harassing the administration.  They need to be calling administration officials up to the Hill every day to answer questions on camera.  They need to be on every TV and radio outlet they can find,  raising holy hell.

I think this is why everyone is getting so angry.  This rather calm,  passive attitude as our country swirls around the drain is appalling.

This morning, the Muslim Brotherhood warned the United States that if the United States continued meddling in Egypt, Libya, and other potential hot spots in the Middle East, they intend to cut off America's supply of 7-11 and Motel 6 managers.

If this action does not yield sufficient results, cab drivers will be next, followed by Dell, AT&T, and AOL customer service reps.

181 Stories behind the great hymns- "Great Is Thy Faithfulness" from a poem written by a NJ native Thomas Chisholm.in 1923 It's a great hymn because it references the Book of Lamentations in which the prophet Jeremiah disgusted by human wickedness and the desolation of the people turns away from the evil and peril and reflects on the faithfulness of God. (Jeremiah 3:19-24). Even though Chisholm was a Christian it is a hymn that might be appreciated by brother and sisters of faith who are Jewish not only because it's in reference to that great book-Lamentations- but because it mentions "Lord" and "God" (yes, I know some Jews don't like to mention the name of God) without being Christological. Here is some reflection on the background of the hymn writer are interested: http://gaither.com/news/“great-thy-faithfulness”-story-behind-hymn Here is some background on the Biblical background of Jeremiah and this passage: http://www.dailyencouragement.net/hymnstory/audio/great_is_thy_faithfulness.mp3

222 FenelonSpoke - I'm not sure if you know this, but those of us that grew up Catholics never heard any of those great Hymns.  They were basically banned from Catholic Churches.

Things are a bit different these days - not that I go to church very often.  But when I have been to a Catholic church for a wedding or a funeral and they say a full Mass, the music is pretty bad.

I always got the impression that one of the big reasons Protestants went to church was for the Hymns!  Not so, for most Catholics.. But, gimme some Gregorian Chant and I'm in heaven!

The image of Christie happily hugging President Obama on the tarmac — and being AWOL for Romney, right as he was slipping in the polls — was seared into the consciousness of the conservative elite.

ChristieÂ’s inner circle has taken the complaints seriously, fearing their implications ahead of the 2016 presidential election."<

269 The Republicans don't want to win.  It was such an unpleasant experience for them during the Bush years, they were always the object of scorn and gags and meanness.  They actually like when the dems are in charge as the meaness and the scorn and the gags virtually stop and no one criticizes the dems, ever.  So DC is nice as far as their concerned.  Plus, when a dem is in charge, the republicans get invited to all the right parties.  It's a win/win for them.

304 “True prayer is only another name for the love of God. Its excellence does not consist in the multitude of our words; for our Father knoweth what things we have need of before we ask Him. The true prayer is that of the heart, and the heart prays only for what it desires. To pray, then is to desire -- but to desire what God would have us desire. He who asks what he does not from the bottom of his heart desire, is mistaken in thinking that he prays.” ― François Fénelon, Spiritual Progress Yesterday as I was driving I came across a grandfather seated outside his house on a chair, He was near the front of his driveway and he was a reading a book. To the right of him him must have been his grandson-a cute little brown haired boy of about 6 who was also looking at a book. Granddad was also watching while his little grandson sold Black eyed Susans (a flower I always enjoy). I didn't get a chance to buy some and when I came back they were not there. Anyway it lifted my spirits to see their companionship and the flowers. Today on a early walk I saw a field of fireweed. There's usually something to be grateful for if you look around. Have a great day. For those that pray, keep praying. Catch you later. :^)

307 "That's my baby boy," said the mother of the 16-year-old accused of firing the single bullet from a handgun into the back of Mr Lane. She doesn't believe her son was involved in the shooting, saying today he was not a member of a gang and definitely not the one who pulled the trigger. The father of the 15-year-old accused of being in the car admitted his son had been in some previous "kid stuff" trouble with the law, but described him as a good boy who also was not part of a gang. "I don't think so," the father replied when asked if his son could have been part of the murder. "Because he's not the type of person. He likes to wrestle. He's into sports." 326 Hey MPPP, morning how are you?

You are so right about Christian Nation.  As I commented last night it makes Fifty Shades of Gray seem as good as The Great Gatsby.  Then I decided to try and pen something far better.
---
It was a dark and stormy night. The road was deserted without another car to be seen. Frederic and Greg held hands while trying to hide under the tiny umbrella, their sole protection for the bone chilling rain that fell on all of them.

"Now Sanjay remember to lift with your back." Emilie did not care if she was getting wet, the rain would just wick away from her dreads. What was important was making sure Sanjay replaced the flat tire on their Fit correctly. Emilie wondered for the thousandth time why she was dating such a rustic uncultured rube from India, then she remembered to annoy her parents and their stuck up ways.

"Yes dear, I will remember." Sanjay's English diction is perfect but he still says the words in a sing song chant. It's one of the things that endeared him to Emilie and being a truly irritating habit that grated on her Daddy's nerves.

"Man this sucks. Where are we?" Greg mutters not quiet enough, thus its followed by a grunt of pain as Frederic elbows him sharply. "What? Its a reasonable question?"

Emilie pulls up her iPhone 5 that is gold plated, "Siri where am I?" Silence. "Siri answer me." More silence and Emilie frowns. Sanjay is heard taking the spare tire out and rolling it on the gravel coated breakdown lane.

Emilie stares at her iPhone 5. Where it should say 4G and have signal bars instead it says 'Searching' She shoves the useless phone back into a pocket of her Che jacket. "Crap we are in a dead zone. Somewhere in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. And we are going to be late for the concert."

That is when Frederick finally says something in his soft Boston accident that says he comes from a monied family and education. "I think I see a light over there."

Emilie looks to where Frederick points and sure enough through the continuing drizzle she sees a single yellow light up on a hill. As her eyes adjust they pick up more details, what she thought was a house instead looks like a castle.

Obama administration asks Supreme Court to allow warrantless cellphone searches

WaPo:  http://tinyurl.com/mt28qop

If the police arrest you, do they need a warrant to rifle through your cellphone? Courts have been split on the question. Last week the Obama administration asked the Supreme Court to resolve the issue and rule that the Fourth Amendment allows warrantless cellphone searches...

...In a petition filed earlier this month asking the Supreme Court to hear the case, the government argues that the First CircuitÂ’s ruling conflicts with the rulings of several other appeals courts, as well as with earlier Supreme Court cases. Those earlier cases have given the police broad discretion to search possessions on the person of an arrested suspect, including notebooks, calendars and pagers. The government contends that a cellphone is no different than any other object a suspect might be carrying.

But as the storage capacity of cellphones rises, that position could become harder to defend. Our smart phones increasingly contain everything about our digital lives: our e-mails, text messages, photographs, browser histories and more. It would be troubling if the police had the power to get all that information with no warrant merely by arresting a suspect...

351 Those earlier cases have given the police broad discretion to search possessions on the person of an arrested suspect, including notebooks, calendars and pagers. And those earlier decisions may well have been wrong. It's one thing to note "Suspect had in his possession X" where X is whatever item: notebook, calendar, pager, crack-pipe, half-oz of marijuana, whatever. It's another thing to say, "Suspect's notebook had notes detailing Y." There are obvious safety reasons for searching a suspect and removing his personal affects. But if you want to search the *contents* of my affects, you should need a warrant.

I see on Drudge that North Korea is dealing with a chronic methamphetamine problem.  The only thing that surprises me about that is that they're able to get hold of the necessary raw ingredients to make it.

This part of the article caught my attention:

Almost every adult in that area (of North Korea) has experienced using ice and not just once,” says Kim Seok-hyang, who co-authored the study. “I estimate that at least 40% to 50% are seriously addicted to the drug.”

How North Koreans kick their meth habit is unclear. Prof. Kim, a former Unification Ministry official who now lectures at Ewha Womans University, says some of the refugees she interviewed for the study deny that ice is addictive at all.

“They say you can stop it whenever you want. All you need to do is sleep all day long, for three or four days,” she says.

Extreme fatigue, anxiety and depression are effects of methamphetamine withdrawal,    say health advocates...

To which my response is, "In other words, meth    withdrawal is just     like any other    miserable    day in North Korea, but with the shakes.    Maybe they just don't notice."

Since the Aussies are blaming the gun rather than the shooter for the OK shooting, let me toss this in the mix.  On the weekend threads there was some discussion of the CDC report on gun violence that came out last week.  Basically it was a review article summarizing existing research and pointing out areas of future research that could help guide  gun  policy (watch out for this).  Here's a quote (emphasis added):

“At the societal level, income inequality emerges as a powerful predictor of firearm homicide and violence crime.  Research suggests that income inequality undermines social cohesion and social capital, which in turn, increases firearm violence.”

You know, I'd bet if the Horde decided to get together and collectively pen a Christian Nation / Handmaid's Tale, we'd come up with something that would scare the crap out of the left. With the added advantage of being well written.

Also,    allow me to reiterate my deep, abiding loathing for A Handmaid's Tale.   Is Atwood dead yet, or    is she still festering somewhere in Canada like an open wound?

Actually I seem unable to escape thinking of my version of Emilie, Sanjay, Greg, and Frederick. *sigh*

You see its all a plot by Greg. He fixed it so the Fix would have a flat out there. He was afraid Frederick would discover his dark secret of actually being a New Yorker. So Frederick had to go. Emilie and Sanjay since they are friends with Frederick, they had met at one of the posh little clubs. So poor trust fund Emilie and innocent Sanjay have to depart this mortal coil also. So they travel to the abandoned castle where one of Greg's friends has set things up. And once all is said and done, Greg will claim to be the sole survivor of another attack by the Jersey Devil while three bodies quietly decay in the acidic soil of the Barrens.

Greg covered behind one of the lions that guarded the New York Public Library as another bullet from the hidden sniper spanged off the stone mane sending little chips chattering god knows where save those which bit into Greg's untanned flesh. He bit his tongue to keep from screaming. Down the steps was a scene that made Greg's stomach lurch and try to upheave, his teech clenched down on his tongue prevented that from happening. Sprawled lifelessly with limbs akimber and bright red blood flowing down the steps, Frederick's head looked like a burst bubble, nothing left above the ears.

Heh,

There's one of your anthology stories right there.  I'm sure one better than me could draft one up about the banning of abortion, followed by an increase in rape, and women being forced to carry out a pregnancy to term.

The key in making libtards heads explode on that one is, not to question the odd rise in rapes, or what could be done to prevent it.  Libtards never car about that, they only care about the abortion part afterwards.

MWR somersaulted off her trampoline and landed on the shoulders of the nearest SEIU member.  Flexing her thigh muscles, she began cutting the blood and airflow of the union goon's head.

"How's that feel?  Too tight?  No?"

She clenched tighter as she started pummeling the top of the goon's head.  When he finally passed out from the lack of air and the blows to his skull, MWR mercifully finished him off with a curb stomp.

"Now.....where's that fucking spider?"

Watched Zero Dark Thirty finally.   I can see why Hollywood thought about giving it a bunch of Oscars and then suddenly realized maybe the film was not a message film against enhanced interrogation, or torture.  Don't care really.  Either way it was justified in a few limited cases.

Bigelow sort of plays is straight down the middle.   The waterboarding and attention slaps are   brutal and grotesque, but also effective and not nearly as grotesque   as the brutality of   the jihadis.  At first it seems like the entire movie is going to be about the CIA 'secret prisons' in   black sites.

But thanks to such a long run time, there is still a great bit on  simple human errors screwing up the most intelligent and dedicated efforts.  That's one of the main stories of humanity.   And even a mini movie on the raid itself.

I thought it would be a campaign film for Obama, but that was way off.   I don't see enough movies to say best picture, but better than 95% of the movies I've seen.   No Wreck-It Ralph, but still great.   Just kidding.

USA Women Suffrage, 1920 right to vote required a constitutional amendment. In America, land of the free, my parents were already born before my grandmothers' had the US constitutional right to vote. The Passage of the 19th Amendment, 1919-1920 http://tinyurl.com/62amx The Democrat Party v. The Republican Party The key vote came on June 4, 1920, when the Senate approved the amendment by 56 to 25 after four hours of debate, during which Democratic Senators opposed to the amendment filibustered to prevent a roll call until their absent Senators could be protected by pairs. The Ayes included 36 (82%) Republicans and 20 (54%) Democrats. The Nays comprised 8 (18%) Republicans and 17 (46%) Democrats. It was ratified by sufficient states in 1920, the Nineteenth Amendment, which prohibited state or federal gender restrictions on voting. (fordham.edu) Now go figure how it is that without any help from the Democrats, the country club Republicans managed to discredit Governor Sarah Palin, GOP VP'08. It's as if nipping her political career was McCain's point, taking her down in the bud.

515 Great News, Vic.

516 Yes, if the Tea Party keeps this up, we might get a rock ribbed conservative like McCain or Romney as our presidential candidate.  Karl Rove did more to destroy the Republican Party by winning an election than any Democrat could have done.

517 Another day, another troll and run by Gabe.

If the "establishment" or the main of the GOP was so great, don't you think it'd be self-evident?

Nobody has to tell you a flower is pretty or shit stinks . . . .

518 @480 I was expecting lefty agitprop. Even The Killing Fields has the speech which blames the US for the Khmer Rouge. ZDT is totally honest re Islam and jihad motivations. Hollywood rarely touches it. Oddly, the first four minutes of The Kingdom, opening credits, is fantastic. The Jamie Foxx counterterror movie does not suck. Did not see that coming.

520 And, morons, do you not see that a brouhaha over standing on principle is the result of cognitive dissonance among those who profess constitutional values? See you not that?

521 eh. wrong thread

522 Yes, but then they retconned the ending, for moral equivalence,

523 No lame RINOs. Clearly does not work. If my only choices are Cruz, Paul, and Christie that is my order of preference. Electability is crap when the media turns on Christie after the primaries.

524 regardless of gender, politicians whore When a conservative lady shows up, insiders paint her as if a skank so that when she's gang raped, it isn't rape-rape. Hazing initiates, "Because I Could," she "deserved" it. Pelosi Shared Values Democrats skank in public. Republican inner skanks envy the democrat libertine. The Clintons epitomize plagues of death and destruction. "We came. We saw. We killed. Hahahhah" Stick to broadcasting the horror of Hillary's bio without revisionist embellishments. Leave her portrait completely exposed in the light of day, murders and public thefts on the grandest scale. Relentless Accountability '16

526 We have a permanent Dem majority in Congress with the GOP we have now.  A difference that makes no difference IS no difference.

527 Where is your issue with Karl Rove's group going after conservatives? Must've missed that one.

Posted by: NJRob at August 20, 2013 06:57 AM (PBJNU)

528 RE: "Permanent Democratic majority, guys." Yup -- that started with the nomination of John McCain and continued with the nomination of Romney. If the Republican Party nominates, oh, say, Rubio, we can continue on our strategery to accomplish that permanent Democratic majority. I'm thrilled that conservatives are moving forward and attacking the Republican establishment. I hope they keep it up!

529 I'm not really sure why I'm supposed to be outraged at conservatives attacking shitty Republicans. Isn't that what we want them to do?

530 What good are "electable candidates" if they turn out to be a bunch of quislings that turn around and vote like Demonrats when they get in office? I'm a Floridian, and my last two Senate choices were Crist (now a D), and Rubio (del Shamnesty), I'm kinda offended at the idea that we shouldn't be putting a little chlorine in the pool. Who the hell wants to vote for somebody that doesn't represent us? To be clear, if we wanted someone that supported Obamacare or Amnesty, we'd be voting Democrat!

531 What's the point of having a Republican in office or majority when said Republican(s) have/has more in common with leftists than conservatives?

532 The sooner the GOP dies the sooner we can have a genuine opposition party in this country.

533 "Think of it this way: If Republicans have any chance of persuading the public that the conventional wisdom is wrong, and that the president's party is at fault for a shutdown showdown precipitated by Obamacare, they'd need to present a strong united front and over-perform in the ensuing messaging battle. Does anyone expect that to happen, especially in light of recent evidence? " Then to effect our strategic goals, we need a purge of Republicans until we have that unity and clarity of message. " I believe they're mistaken, but I share their intense contempt for this law; in fact, the defunding gambit may not be a bad opening posture heading into the upcoming negotiations." We were promised an end to backroom negotations; the House was going to proceed with open order. "That being said, it's counter-productive madness for conservatives to assail each other at a moment when the other side should be profoundly vulnerable. Strategic disagreements are fine. Foolish litmus tests and ultimatums are destructive." Counter-productive towards what goal? Destructive of what operation? One enemy at a time. The prime enemy in 2014 is the type of Republican who thinks the GOP has no policy commitments until it wins control of both House, Senate, and White House. The Republicans who PLAN to be disorganized and losers in the messaging. The movement to end central national economic planning is stronger, to end national social planning, is stronger when those Republican placeholders are out of politics.
