Happy Thursday.

William Jacobson has a smart post on skepticism when it comes to Snowden and Greenwald.

Democrats think a government shutdown might shake things up enough to put the House within their reach.

Gallup finds disapproval of Obamacare still outpacing approval. I'm more interested in the spike of "no opinion" people. That went from 4% to 11% in a month. Are they really people with no opinion or are they folks who have an opinion, but don't want to say it because they believe its unpopular?

The Mustache 2016? He's thinking about it.

3 The government will not shutdown. It will only shutdown if SCOAMF shuts it down. And that will only happen if the GOP ties the defunding of Obamacare to the continuing resolution. Which it will NOT do.

Passing amnesty will help the Republicans

11 From the article on the 'stache: "...he could be mistaken for just another Washington, D.C., lawyer as he makes his way to work each morning from his home in Bethesda, Md." Don't get me wrong, he is an interesting and charismatic fellow, but I sure as hell don't need, let alone want " just another Washington, D.C., lawyer" as the next President.

23

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

I only have time for a short story this morning, so letÂ’s go back to 1935, where screenwriter Sam Hellman is sitting at a table at the Beverly Hills Hotel.  William FoxÂ’s homonymous Film Corporation has just merged with Darryl ZanuckÂ’s Twentieth-Century studio and a crowd of writers, actors, executives and Wall Street bankers have gathered in the hotel ballroom to celebrate.

The star of the evening is Shirley Temple, the child star whose movies have singlehandedly saved Twentieth from bankruptcy.*  When she enters the ballroom, on her way to the stage she passes by HellmanÂ’s table.  Impulsively, he reaches out, takes her hand and spins her around.  Picking her up and holding her high over his head, he smiles and tells her what a wonderful little performer she is.

“Suddenly,” he recalled later, “a horrible silence fell over the room and I looked toward the head table.  There all the bankers from New York had turned white and were mopping big drops of sweat from their brows.  I realized then what I was doing.  Here I was holding nearly all the assets of Twentieth Century-Fox in my hands.  It scared me so I nearly dropped her.  But I managed to set her on the floor, and when I looked at the head table again the bankers were sighing big sighs of relief and the color was creeping back into their faces.”

And now it's time to get a cup of tea and sleep through another hour-long meeting.  Hope you all have a wonderful day.

*Bankruptcy seemed to be a constant with Twentieth; almost 30 years later, the studio would be shattered by the disaster of Elizabeth TaylorÂ’s Cleopatra, only to be saved from extinction by the massive grosses of The Sound of Music in 1965. . .which they then lost with the fiasco of 1967s Doctor Doolittle.

28 Bolton is "thinking about" running for president?

So is Lieawatha Warren, MA's answer to Shrillery Clinton and Nanzi Pelosi. So is Scott Brown. So is Devil Patrick, apparently.

Hell, I'm sure Poppin Fresh's man-crush, Tim Pawlenty, will get him some adulation from Tepid Air and decides that means he has A Mandate to Lead.

I'd be tempted to vote for Bolton, if he opens up and lets us all in on where he stands on domestic issues. Haven't heard a word on that.

What I Do. Not. Want. is another candidate propelled beyond their capabilities by starry-eyed sycophants, and thus is required only to BE, not DO. No Choom Boy. No Palin.

We are being used and stolen from, (think IP) on a massive level by foreign enities such as China and Russia. Sending Biden or Kerry is like sending your children to haggle with a used car dealer. Domestically? I don't know that he would be bad domestically. He seems stalwart in his conservative ways. Just because you have never seen him throw a ball, doesn't mean he can't. He would be a great President, It's all about who he surrounds himself with. I know this. He will not be buklled like the parade of meek little girls that are in there now. That being said

54 #12   J.J. Sefton,  I am puzzled as to why we are not using this issue.  (Although one thing I saw was that Boehner's daughter works for Sallie Mae).

This is a disgrace and to have all of these kids bound into servitude is just outrageous.

One thing the article didn't cover is how they also are told that they can borrow for "living expenses."  This explains why suddenly there are so many kids going on European tours and spending Spring Break in Acapulco.

18-year olds can borrow the money without parental consent,  too.

It's real good to say that they should understand,  but I remember how little I understood about even compound interest when I was 18.  Plus they are fed a line about how ANY degree will get them entry into the job market.

So then they end up with a degree in "fashion merchandising" and are working in a retail shop for peanuts while saddled with a huge debt.  And the democrats promote this so that their buddies on campuses will continue to brainwash, write position papers extolling them,  and generally keep the gravy train rolling.

It's similar to how union dues are used to support the dems who in turn make union-friendly policies, while the rank and file never see much benefit.

That 49% disapproval rate is way too low and the 11% who don't know is way too high.  It shows, as I have been saying, Americans really do not appreciate how big a shit sandwich O'care really is.  Let it take effect on Jan 1 and we will have a sweet platform to win back the Senate next year.

56 Regarding Bolton, as everyone should know by now, "running for President," or I suppose even  announcing one is thinking about it doesn't necessarily mean the person believes they have a shot at the big office.

The Oberlin administration has a lot of answering to do to the community, the nation, and to Oberlin alumni. How must those alumni feel to see their school smeared based on a hoax. 70 It makes me very sad that the majority of schools founded to teach Christian ideals and/or ministers have so departed from their roots that they could scarcely be called Christian at all. Oberlin is an example: "A Presbyterian minister and a missionary founded Oberlin in 1833. The duo, the Rev. John J. Shipherd and Philo P. They discovered a mutual disenchantment with what they saw as the lack of strong Christian principles among the settlers of the American West. They decided to establish a college and a colony based on their religious beliefs, "where they would train teachers and other Christian leaders for the boundless most desolate fields in the West."

I get the sense that the Establishment GOP (and Gabe, but I repeat myself) aren't appreciating the Democrat negotiating tactic here.

After the last shutdown the GOP gained seats.  Of  *course*  the Dems are going to try and pitch the narrative that it's going to be unpopular, because that's one way they are going to try to dissuade the GOP from doing it.  It's not like the DNC Media Arm that is the MSM would challenge the Dems on this narrative - but people 20 years ago were smart enough to see through the charade, and that's without all the alternative media that exists today.

Bottom line, there's no reason to automatically believe your negotiating opponent when he says your threat will actually benefit him.

80 The Stache is a big difference between our side and theirs. Making a strong stand for your party's position makes people in your party feel good. Think about the chicks who wanted to blow Weiner because he made a passionate speech on the House floor. (Talk about cheap dates. ). 81 "Democrats think a government shutdown might shake things up enough to put the House within their reach." Just like the sequester. Oh wait. ... heh. Within their reach? With gumby arms. Democrats "think". Hm, doubtful. (You have to pass it before you can read it.) Republicans match that with absolute deceit: Whatever we promised before getting (re)elected, it's the law of the land; get over it. No surprise, given Mitt's '08 statement: "Promise them anything; just get their votes." Converting the House back to Democrat Majority seems unnecessary given the likes of R-TX Congressman John Carter turn-coat v. opposition, promoting the national and state Republican Party agenda for his constituents to swallow: "Submit. There are no legitimate criticisms against authoritarianism."

119 #102  I sure learned MY lesson.  Powell is on my list of "talkers who are worthless"  right there with Romney (absolutely dumbfounded at his crappy campaign) and Palin (who led a LOT of people to think that she would run in 2012).

That is also why I place no stock in the "considering running" rumors from any of them. There is as much misleading and double-dealing in all of this as the Byzantine Court.

Example:  Guiliani making a big play and then running a campaign solely to divert votes from Romeny.  Same with Fred Thompson.  Bah.

It is also why I am not investing my support in any of them.  I will take a look at what shakes out during the primaries,  but I seriously believe that we will end up with a blah candidate.

And for those who think Christie will at least bring the fire and brimstone,  I remind you of his very underwhelming speech at the convention.  He's a double-dealing jerk.

I picked up phone and had alert from Herald. Scott Brown was thinking about running for POTUS in 2016. The idea is so dumb I couldnÂ’t stop laughing. There is no way GOP voters would seriously consider another MA moderate as nominee. Scott must have lost his marbles to even think about it, never mind voicing it to anyone.

Probably my most serious posts towards Ace have been on race and religion.  I'd actually like to think I've helped Ace reflect on Judeo/Christianity as least odious of man's religious impulses.  Ace had his dancing shoes on on the topic last evening.

"Religiosity in thinking" is long hand for "magic thinking" and the left is VERY prone to magic thinking as a trait.

178 Well finished reading Lady of Devices and I am glad it was free.  Whilst the author does have a lovely way to describe scenes and such, it is wasted effort because of other issues with the book.

For one thing as someone else pointed out, the street urchins with hearts of gold is pat of an old trope that should have been left at the coaling grate.  Come on dress it up with a bit more challenge.  She is dressed richly and driving a landau.  Have a gang nick her thinking they can get ransom for her.  And she must think of a way getting out of such a dire situation.

Another issue is length of the novel, as in the author seems to have split a longer book into several to milk more revenue, we see the heroine reach a stopping point but nowhere close to her achieving her dreams since you must read the follow on books for that.  All I could think of was Anne McCaffrey and Nimisha's Ship where we see a proper young lady bucking convention to become a starship designer and finding love; would readers have been happy if this 361 page novel had been split up into three books costing $3.99 each instead of $6.99 for one paperback?  No we would be outraged.

All butt kissing aside, I'd wager Ace is as decent a guy and serious a thinker outside this box as he seems inside it.

I have little grief with genuine Agnostics as I once renounced my faith.  The evangelical atheist ala Jharles Chonson is another matter.  The human intellect when not forced into a total discipline uses magic thinking to make its peace with a very dynamic reality.

Our faith assures us that there is order in a firestorm and that this walk on the mortal coil is our transition back to paradise or hell depending on our deeds and veneration of the Creator.

That does not make us innately superior people, but it does give us a code and a playbook.

I've missed peeking in on you BB.

Becoming a woman won't solve his problems. They are in his brain. not his sexual organs.

Over the years, accumulating what gets reported provides a better overview of agenda behind propaganda. I've read during GWB administration of German and French CORPORATE production and sales of wmd chemicals, sold to ME nations. I'm not referencing agricultural fertilizer. And I'm not anticipating that a corporation for global profits would distinguish between buyers based on the best interest of the US Constitutional Government. It isn't as if the production of poison is confined within X or Y nation, especially as this post-constitutional era is run by global corporatism. And that problem is global, not simply an American problem. ANYTHING for profit. hobgoblin

One thing we have to do is not be too proud and dignified to run lowbrow ads on all of those stations that carry stuff like Honey Boo Boo.   Last time we were taken by surprise, and Obama put his sunny, optimistic ads and scaremongering ads on those channels and got those people to vote.

293 Imma post this repeatedly until someone runs with it, or I get tired of doing it.

IIUC, the Republicans say that they are holding back on fighting for the things they supposedly favor (e.g. Obamacare defunding, immigration law enforcement, etc.) because they only hold half of one third of the federal government.  We just need to hold tight and help them take back the Senate so that they can get some real work done.

What ---- no, really, WHAT?! ---- are they going to do differently if they keep the House and take the Senate in 2014?  They will then only control both halves of one third of the government, and Obama will veto anything they might try to advance our crazy conservative ideas.

At a guess, because of jackholes such as McCain, Graham, and Murkowski, they won't even block any of the horrible people dickhead nominates.

In what utopian world will they do anything more than continue to cave on everything while complaining back to the small government types that their hands are tied until they control the Presidency?

They are gutless now, and I have no reason to expect them to be any less gutless if they do manage to gain control of both houses of Congress.

294 I just read an article about the 20 year old German girl who got her arm bitten off by a shark in Hawii.. She died. But my point is the article says local officials have been flooded with calls asking if the beaches are safe. Jesus Christ I am forever amazed at just how fucking stupid people are. And how they think their fucking officials know more than they do. They deserve to be eaten by sharks. Thats all they are good for. Why yes Madam Imbecile, the beaches are completely safe, feel free to go there with your kids and get good and drunk while playing in the surf. The world is your playground and there is nothing to worry about. Your Government Officials will see to your safety.  Wear some steak falsies in your top for luck.

299 Today is the 528th anniversary of the battle of Bosworth Field* in 1485, when England's King Richard III (1452-1485) was defeated and killed by Henry, Earl of Richmond (later Henry VII), thus ending the Wars of the Roses (1455-1485), in which the victorious (red-rose) Lancastrians eventually prevailed over the (white-rose) Yorkists, to establish the Tudor dynasty, which later produced Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

That's fuckin' brilliant!  We had just spent the 1940s bombing the rest of the industrial world back to the bronze age and were spending the 1950s rebuilding it, and selling everything to everybody.  Conditions like that won't come again soon.  It was the only time Keynesian economics appeared to work in practice, so it's obvious why the left is nostalgic.

It was also a time when blacks and women were excluded from the workforce (the part of it that paid well, at least) so wages for men at every level were pretty high.

The dirty little secret of the 90% top rate is that people in that bracket had myriad write-off, exemptions, and deductions.  They often paid less--in total tax payments--than people who punche a time clock.

326 THE teenagers charged over the murder of Melbourne man Chris Lane will be isolated from one another and other inmates in an Oklahoma jail as long as they are there.

Stephens Country Sheriff Wayne McKinney said they would be held individually at the Stephens County Jail for their own protection, and as part of standard protocol for anyone under 18.

It comes as Edwards, who has been charged with first-degree murder, posted racist tweets saying he hated white people in the months before the shooting.

Edwards posted statements on his Twitter feed including a comment on April 29 where he tweeted "90% of white ppl are nasty. #HATE THEM".

Edwards also weighed when George Zimmerman was acquitted over the death of Trayvon Martin.

"Ayeee I knocced out 5 woods since Zimmerman court! lol sh*t ima keep sleepin sh*t! #ayeeee."

"Woods" is derogatory slang for white people. The feed also contains tweets glorifying violence, guns and gangs.

371 As a demonstration project, how about the House produce the Dialectic Balanced Budget Choice Act of 2013?

Be it resolved that the Federal Budget must be in balance, and that the balance shall be achieved by either Method A or Method 2, described below.

Further, be it resolved that the Choice of Method shall be made by the People, who shall text their Choice of Method ("A" or "2") to star "shit just got real".  All entries must be received by noon next Friday.  Five lucky entrants shall be eligible to win an all-expenses-paid vacation to downtown Pagosa Springs or a New Bic pen.  All prize committee decisions shall be final.

Method A, Hereinafter known as the Let's Get Spendy Method:
1)  No borrowing shall be permitted;
2) Spending for the new Budget Year shall be equal to spending for the immediately previous budget year, and;
3) FICA tax rates shall be doubled and all Personal Income Tax Bracket Rates shall be increased by an Equal Amount until the estimated federal tax collection -- based on the tax collections from the immediately previous budget year -- equals the amount budgeted for Spending.

Method 2, Hereinafter known as the Tighten Your Belt Method:
1)  No borrowing shall be permitted;
2)  Tax rates and collection methods shall remain as they were in teh immediately previous budget year, and;
3)  Spending on all programs -- Discretionary, Non-Discretionary, On-Books, and Off-Books -- shall be cut by an equal percentage until the total Spending for the new Budget Year is no greater than the total federal tax collection for the immediately previous budget year.

It's the low cut lean over game. Nothing that tawdry.

Ah...yes, I know that game!

Trivia:  I saw Jack Reacher recently and Rosamund Pike was absolutely scorching.  There's the one scene where her and Cruise figure out who the real target of the sniper attack was.  In that scene, she's wearing a top that cuts sort of low, and she leans forward a lot.  I did not know she was that endowed.  Then later on, I read she was 5 months pregnant with her son while she was filming Jack Reacher.

374 The 90% rate applied to so few its revenue effect was negligible.

However, the initial low end rate was DOUBLE what it is today around 20%, and there were no notions of EITC and such.  If you have a minimum wage job today, are single, and take standard deduction, you pay pretty close to zero.  No so back in the 50's.

Of course.  But it has nothing to do with the actual rate and its economic implications.  It's yet another tiresome round of "the rich are hoarding all this money that belongs to us!  We have to make them pay their fair share!"  It's why no-one touting this nonsense will agree to 1950s government  outlays.  It's all and only about theft.

381 So you know how the Consumer products Safety board (or whatever) and the IPAB death panel things are supposed to be untouchable, because the enabling legislation says (paraphrasing somewhat here), "None of you future Congresses can touch me!!  Neener-Neener, Bitchez!!!)?

Um...   yeah.

What about the whole, "future Congresses not bound by promises made in current legislation" thing that lets them promise spending cuts next Tuesday, but then ignore them when Tuesday rolls around?

If I'm Johnny Troll Feeding Future Congress, I'm pretty sure that I can make those things FOAD with just a simple majority vote.  Of both Houses.  And a presidential signature.
