Good Morning Morons. Today is Wednesday, August 28, 2013. On this day in 1845 the first issue of Scientific American was published. This magazine is still running and is the oldest magazine in the United States. Moreover, they are one of the very few magazines that printed an article that criticized the global warming hoax as unsupported by science. For which they were roundly attacked.

I'm sorry. I just can't get excited about this. This is not about the food. This is about our society where any meal less than 10,000 calories is considered starving kids to death. This is about the fact that we are raising narcissistic kids who believe that they should always get every single thing they want. I work around school-aged kids all day long. I see it every single day.

I think this time with the JEF in the WH there is a damn good chance they will. The most likely response will be to take out one of those destroyers the JEF sent over there or that British airbase that it looks like we will be launching aircraft from.
When a head of a major State says "catastrophic consequences" someone better be paying attention.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.
For a compact dose of lies and idiocy, itÂ’s hard to beat this letter in my local paper. The authorÂ’s a regular crank with delusions of superiority who considers Thomas Sowell an Uncle Tom:
I thought about refuting it, but since my reply would be an unprintable string of “fucking liar” with the occasional “SCOAMF,” I’m trying to let it roll off my back. Though if any of the Horde have suggestions for a blistering letter, I’m all ears.
So on to our story:
When it came to the Mob, there was a long history of goodfellas visiting Tinseltown to relax, rub shoulders with the stars (Al Capone was one of the first, in 1927) or, in the case of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and Moving Picture Operators (IATSE), doing their best to shake down the studios, including money laundering, threats of strikes and the old standby of outright violence.
So it would be only natural that the swaggering Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel* would make his headquarters in Hollywood, bringing along his trusted lieutenant, Mickey Cohen. Hostesses had a policy of “invite first, ask questions later,” and before long the handsome Siegel was dating starlets like Marie “The Body” McDonald and Wendy Barrie, joking with Clark Gable and making book with Jean Harlow (whose sleazy stepfather, Marino Bello, had his own underworld connections).
Cohen, too, would soon be able to slip into a monkey suit and swank it up with the best of them, but there were a few detours along the way. “On Benny’s orders,” Cohen once recalled, “I went into this private club and raided the joint. I had the shotgun on everybody. I was watching this good-looking lady and the guy with her. Goddamn, she was beautiful. I knew she was a movie person. But who the hell was she? We got the dough and the jewelry and we took off.”
Two years later, a dapper Cohen was at a party when he looked up. “There was this little blonde casing me and whispering something to Florabel Muir.”**
Cohen ignored the two until he felt a tap on his shoulder. Muir was standing there, a quirky smile on her face. “Mickey,” she said, “do you remember that little lady over there?”
Cohen looked in the blonde’s direction. “Nope. Never met her before.”
“Oh, you met her before,” Muir laughed. “That’s Betty Grable. You took her jewelry.”
So with that, here’s a picture of the Woman With the Millon-Dollar Legs and the “trimmest little bottom in Hollywood:”
Hope you all have a wonderful day.
*”Bugsy” was Siegel’s underworld nickname, reflecting his erratic behavior. But no one ever called him “Bugsy” to his face and lived.
**the New York Daily News Hollywood columnist.

I agree with you completely, J.J. And, frankly, I just don't have the energy to rebut him. But it's an example of what I was talking about yesterday - if the left isn't forcefully refuted at every opportunity, they win. Although, now that I know he thinks Sowell - Sowell! is an Uncle Tom, ignoring him seems the best bet.
Though I am tempted to find an e-mail contact for Patricia Smith and dare him to tell her that her son's death is "phony."

Don't know who, don't know why, don't know how, but we do know Obama stepped in it when he publicly pronounced an ultimatum, in his never threatening passive aggressive way. Not only did he expose himself as impotent, he exposed himself to the trap that a provocateur could set him up. So I don't really care about Syria, but I do care that Obama is dishonest, deceitful, ignorant, sly and cunning, devious, and not to be trusted. So I say let Obama be gone, and let someone else be president.
And I like wolves. If it means you have to go armed, then that is a good thing. There are more dangers out there than just lions, tigers, and bears, so being armed and capable of self defense is a good thing.

There are a number of ways Russia can respond militarily and deniably. They can send their state of the art AA weapons and crews to Syria, hide them in caves and basements until the cruise missile attack is over and then bring them out to shoot down the manned aircraft so that US pilots can be paraded through the streets. They can try out their hypersonic anti-ship missiles on the US and British destroyers. Once again, they can be fired by Russian crews but Syrians will get the credit. They can attack the US and British ships with submarines. As long as at least one Syrian submarine exists to surface and claim credit, the Russian participation is deniable. Even if there are no surviving Syrian submarines, just give credit to sunken Syrian subs.
They can also do something like sending North Korea a bunch of weapons, rice and diesel fuel in order to stir things up somewhere else. They can make a deal with a few thousand Chechens to go to Afghanistan and kill infidels with new Russian weapons or be gassed with their families in Chechnya. You know that TFG is going to have a hard time juggling more than one ball at a time.

On the school lunch thing, I do NOT think the protests are from spoiled brats. Many of the favorite food items have been eliminated, the vegetables are served without salt, and the portions are quite small. My grandson has taken to either ordering 2 lunches and paying for them, or taking his own. (He is a high school athlete that needs more calories than they are supplying)
Granddaughter who is in 5th grade but is growing and tall for her age is starving by the time she comes home, especially because she has to eat at 11:00 AM.
The thing is that kids who can scrape together money to buy two lunches can make it. For kids on the reduced or free lunch, they do not get to have any extras. It's unnecessry and unhelpful bossiness on the part of Michelle Obama, who has no knowledge of nutrition and whose own diet and whose children's diets to not comply with the dictates of this program.
And I support anyone, including the kids, who protest anything the Obamas do.

Much as Choom Boy must hate to think about it, the military oaths do not refer to serving him as an individual. The last person to insist on that came to a bad end, to put it mildly.

I'm no eco-nut, card-carrying Sierra Club member. But wiping out a species isn't exactly one of my options for dealing with wolves.
What's next? Maybe grizzly bears? Oh wait, in my area it's the coyotes who are eating people annoying little dogs they leave out barking all night or the cats fighting at 3:00am. Well not anymore. WHich reminds me I need to donate to the coyote preservation society.
Even the article stated the attacks are rare. which they are.
There are certain rules to follow when camping outdoor in order to avoid the attention of any animal species, especially predators who are carnivores. I guarantee you the evidence reveals the dude here didn't follow them.

No, that's the entire point. The same anti-smoking zealots who have embraced false study after false study on second-hand smoke are paying for studies designed to "prove" that e-cigs, if not just as poisonous as real coffin nails, at least contribute to asthma and other respiratory hazards. And that they're a gateway drug to real tobacco.

Good news, everyone!
ABC, CBS and NBC said they will interrupt regularly scheduled programming this afternoon to join the cable news networks in carrying live President Obama’s remarks on the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington, at which Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have A Dream” speech.
"It won't be as good as the speech 50 years ago," Obama said in an interview Tuesday. "I just want to get that out there early". "When you are talking about Dr. King's speech at the March on Washington, you're talking about one of the maybe five greatest speeches in American history," he said.
"I mean, my speech will be awsome. They all are. But top 5? Naw.
Top 10, maybe -- but not top 5."

1. Breakfast is now offered to all, although kids not on the reduced/free lunch program pay for it.
2. The problem with the lunch menus is that it is expensive to buy 2 complete lunches, even for kids who pay (like my grandson). There are not enough calories.
3. A LOT of the people who are getting the free lunches now are children of the working (or rather, NON-working poor) who have been hit hardest by the Obama economy. Their parents have signed them up in order to stretch the food budget.
I am not unacquainted with those people who grift the system while buying booze or drugs. Fine and dandy to talk about them, but there are lots of kids whose parents are struggling. You all know the economy is crap; why can you not see that a direct result is more people trying to get school lunches paid for?
I see these people coming into the food pantry every week. People who left small towns because there is no work and are living in a run-down motel until they can find some sort of jobs. People who have been reduced to part-time work with a family to raise. People who are on a limited income due to health problems and the medicaid spend-down increase has forced them further into poverty.
I have been poor. I know what it's like. Do not be thinking it cannot happen to you.

California Gov. Jerry Brown, laboring under a federal court order to reduce California's prison population by nearly 8,000 inmates, proposed Tuesday to spend hundreds of millions of dollars housing those inmates in local lockups and out of state.
The administration estimated the cost of the plan at $315 million this budget year – just less than one-third of the state's general fund reserve – and $415 million each of the following two years.
Under Brown's proposal, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation could move 5,000 or 6,000 prisoners out of state. Of the remaining prisoners, the majority would be housed at a privately owned facility in the Mojave Desert staffed with state employees.

I'll give you an honest, non-snarky answer, FS. I would expect the first black president - R or D - to speak at the 50th anniversary of the King speech, if for nothing else than to simply say "Look at what Dr. King endured. And look where we are today."
But he will make it about himself, since he is a solipsist and, also, can never resist the temptation to run his mouth (hello, Syria!). But, as well, he needs to engage in politicking. It would not serve his interests nor the interests of the Democrats were Obama to celebrate the integration and advances of the last 50 years. He will poison and distort King's message. He will insulge in cheap "some say" rhetoric to buttress the attendees' conviction that they are only a step away from a lynch mob. He will continue to stoke the rage of the ignorant and of the thinking part of the electorate who have seen his destruction at first hand.
He will tear down Dr. King and elevate himself. He will enrage blacks and condemn whites.
He will destroy.
He is incapable of building.

You forgot the graft. There's graft built in to most transactions, such as the administrator in charge of purchasing computers for the school buys them from his friend/brother in-law/partner in crime for 3-4X the actual cost, and then he and said friend split the overage. Then there's the school credit card scam, where teachers and administrators are issued cards and do not have to fill out any expense report/get approval unless the purchase exceeds $600. SO these cardholders just purchase whatever to their hearts content - under $600 per transaction - and the school system pays the credit card bills, sight unseen.
The Washington Times did an expose on the DC public school system spending in 2003 and I think there was more money spent on graft than actual expenses.

The U.S. Department of Education has dismissed Jewish students' contentions that anti-Israel protests at UC Berkeley created an illegally hostile and anti-Semitic atmosphere on that campus.
The department's civil rights office has determined that the campus protests last year against Israel's treatment of Palestinians, which reportedly included mock military checkpoints, may be upsetting to Jews but "do not constitute actionable harassment," according to a letter from the department released by the University of California on Tuesday.
The year-long investigation is now ending, the department said.

I read somewhere that federal calorie caps are at something like 800 calories for a lunch.
Little VIA just turned 15, and has really hit his stride on growing.
He packed on about six inches in height, and over 25 pounds in weight in the 100 days of summer.
So now he eats his school lunch, and often a second one as well.
Three hours later he is scarfing down two entrees at home, followed by supper in another two hours.
At best, the way he is growing, if he eats everything on his lunch tray, it would qualify as a "snack"

The other problem is, of course, that just giving people stuff tends to encourage bad decision making over the medium/long term.
I remember working at a shop that rebuilt computers and gave them to poor kids who completed a class. I loaded at least 1 (and probably more) of them into Ford Explorers. Now were they new? Maybe not, but being 10 years ago, the third gen explorers hadn't been on the market for that long, so it wasn't that old.
And even so, that's still some huge expense.
But why shouldn't they have a nice car, after all, they can get a computer from us (free), food from government ("free"), etc. etc. etc.
Sure there are some really sad stories are there, but we shouldn't assume that even half the people on these programs are engaging in Christian theories of virtue and human betterment (and even those who are doing so, are human, and temptation's a bitch.)

An elementary school in Carson on Tuesday became a pioneer in a $1-billion effort to provide iPads to every student in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
Broadacres Elementary School handed out the Apple tablet computers ahead of most campuses in the nation's second-largest system. The idea is to work out the kinks before other schools and hundreds of other students receive the devices.
Broadacres is one of 47 schools set to distribute iPads over the next few weeks. The devices for these schools will cost about $30 million. Supplying tablets for the entire district, about 650,000 students, will cost about $500 million. Upgrading schools to a campuswide wireless system will cost another $500 million.

If they want to tax the pot I'd say probably so.
They're such fucking idiots.
I wouldn't care if they taxed it so the price of an ounce of good stuff was under $50 dollars (my friends tell me it's $300 -$400 on the black market), but it looks like the states that have legalized it are taxing it so much you might as well as buy it from a street dealer.
All for something that costs about $5 dollars an ounce to grow.
Now those left wing idiots who were so strongly for legalizing + taxation are choking on the prices. Good for the idiots - but they'll still never learn from it that getting the government involved always ends up in a disaster.
I think people should be able to grow their own (like brewing beer) and even take it to the state fair to win ribbons.

It's a loosing issue though because it's kids complaining about food.
In every household, from time immemorial, kids have complained about food, and parents have said "shut up and eat your peas."
Do these new lunches suck? Sure. are they result of a power mad crazy woman? yes.
Will the media just show all the green beans and such being thrown away causing LIVs to shrug their shoulders? You Betcha.
Furthermore your fighting against two of those "truisms"
"Poor people need assistance." and "Kids should eat healthy." It's not polite to disagree with those mixed company, so you'll get a bunch of LIV bobbing heads that don't understand why we're angry about it. "It sounds good, why isn't it working?"
It's also the symptom of a much bigger disease.

You should check out what's happening in CO with the legalization of pot.
First, the state is considering legalizing recreational pot because they can tax the purchasers, they can tax and license the sellers, etc. [Insert image of state legislator rubbing his hands at the thought of these tens of millions in tax revenue].
Second - and this is the scary part - the state has been, shall we say, lax about protecting its medical marijuana registry list. They allow law enforcement to access it outside of the specified parameters, they have temps updating it without having them sign non-disclosure forms, etc.
So they're taking the pot heads to the cleaners and exposing them to law enforcement abuse and/or robbery.
Lovely!

Employer based insurance has totally fucked with the any prospect of a health financing market. As a result the perceived affordability of healthcare is a mess.
Maybe it was expensive to care for, maybe their insurance would have left them with huge bills. Normally there'd be some way to handle that (loans, payment plans, whatever.)
There's really not much in that area for healthcare.
But let's look at a similar case.
Earthquake hits. Destroys my house. Totally need to rebuild.
I have a 15% deductible on the earthquake rider on my home (because that's the norm here.)
Which means I gotta come up with 30-40k myself for the repairs. I have 3 options really
1) Take from all my cash/stock/retirement etc. reserves (including liquidating things like cars etc.)
2) Find a way to finance it (loans, etc.)
3) Declare bankruptcy.
And various combinations of these. That's how the system works. And it's not an unfair system really. Some people will be able to rebuild, perhaps some rebuild smaller, or take more time. Some will have to liquidate heavily to do that.
And Some won't be able to. They'll go broke and eventually maybe get back on their feet.
Why don't we treat healthcare in a similar way?

Furthermore, the people she supposedly cares about are being hurt the most.
School administrators don't like it, parents don't like it, the kids don't like it. It is a FAILURE.
So when I try to explain why this is a bad program, I get a bunch of people saying the usual attacks on welfare people, the parents should send lunches, blah, blah, blah.
I understand that no one is really starving in America. I am not a dimwit. What I do NOT understand is why no one sees that this is a good issue which points out how the Obamas are meddling in all aspects of our lives and making things worse.
It's like the college loan scam. I have repeatedly tried to explain how kids are being victimized by the government and the schools, and all anyone here has to say is how they should have known better. So now Obama is portraying himself as the savior of college loans when HE AND THE UNIVERSITIES HAVE CREATED THE PROBLEM.
Another opportunity to pry voters out of the dem party is lost because people cannot see the issue as an opportunity, and instead want to prove how they were smarter than those dumb kids.
I am just disgusted, so had better log off for a while.
Posted by: Miss Marple at August 28, 2013 05:43 AM (GoIUi)
"Actually, you mean gross revenue of $250k/year.
From that, the building needs to be purchased/rented. Utilities, maintenance employees, etc. Lunch. And that's assuming a) the parents release the full $25k to the teacher (a bad assumption) and b) the teacher is actually worth that much (also a bad assumption, as any teacher worth a shit has long since fled Detroit). "
So, you don't think it's possible for someone to take 250K and rent enough space for 10 kids (preferably within a block of their homes), cater breakfast, lunch and dinner if they need it, keep it clean and heated/air conditioned, lighted, etc?
Also, if that were the deal and the teacher's salary was what was left over, you don't think the best and the brightest wouldn't flock to Detroit to teach?

Posted by: Oldsailors Poet Palin/Bolton 2016 at August 28, 2013 09:32 AM (XIxXP)"
This brings up an issue that I think should get more attention. Most towns of any size have a MLK street, road or boulevard. All well and good. If I am in an unfamiliar town, I make it a point to not get a motel room on that street or even to visit the area if I can avoid it. If I am driving on the interstate, I do not get off for gas at the MLK exit. It seems to me that it would be a good thing if other black historical figures were honored with streets named after them in the same neighborhoods. Marcus Garvey, Crispus Attucks, Malcom X, W.E.B DuBoise, Fredrick Douglas all should have streets named after them. It will serve as an incentive for people to learn more about black history and it is a real courtesy to out of town visitors.

"I think you blithely skip past a lot of business and economic realities in your zeal to push a snake oil solution."
I'm pretty good at business and economic realities.
With that in mind, it's my contention that a private individual who has a talent for teaching could, with minimal trouble, solve all the logistical problems associated with educating kids and make a good six-figure income at $25,000 per kid.
It's also my contention that other individuals would compete to educate those same kids. From this competition, accountability and results would flow.
If the sum of $25,000 per kid was more than what is being spent now, I could see where some would argue. However, it's less.

"I'm not sure I can come up with a price that would make me move to Detroit..."
You must not have children.
If you did, and a pure voucher for 25K was being offered, you and thousands of others would band together to buy houses and lots in the same neighborhood just to get that voucher.
You would endure the time that your only security would be you and your neighbors looking out for each other and the lack of other city services because the payoff in education for your kids would be so big.
Eventually, the people like you would outnumber the people who currently live in Detroit and you would start voting for a more traditional government.
But you would do it.

Great Idea, I want the fried twinkie concession on that day.

My buddy went to a big hippie rockfest last weekend and they were selling chocolate dipped bacon strips!
There were still some people selling pocket sammiches filled with some stir-fried stuff that looked like puke (traditional Grateful Dead concert food). It's nice, though, to see some young-uns selling real food (meat) at a concert.

"Navycopjoe argues that the Detroit school system is doing a fantastic job educating the kids there, while only spending $25,000 per year on each one"
That is the argument.
You're either saying that the money spent by the Detroit (and other inner-city) school systems is well spent and that vouchers are a bad idea or you're not.
I think for a while there, you and others were thinking that these public school systems were costing far less and that the figure of 25K was a crazy large number. Now, you're starting to figure out what the actual costs are but you can't back down from your anti-voucher position.
"...certain moralistic fallacies which cripple your argument."
What "moralistic fallacies" are you talking about?

"With the number of fallacies you rely upon to make your argument..."
You keep using this word "fallacies". I don't think it means what you think it does.
What is it you think is not right?
