Holiday weekend Friday!

Yeah, this is gonna be a really productive day at work for Obama ... like any of the rest have been.

Exhibit A:

But, hey, they were talking about job creation or something.

20 Interesting comment I heard on Levin last night. Aside from being a client state of the Russkies for decades (as a counterweight to the US/Israel alliance), the Russkies are propping up the regime in order to block the development of the natural gas pipeline to Europe - which is why Qatar is funding the rebels to the tune of $2 billion in weapons and aid.

There can be no question of "unilateral" US action against Assad because France, Turkey, and a number of other countries have already signaled their willingness to go much further than the US in fighting Assad. It is the US that is holding them back.

25 Over at WZ, there is a story about Preznit Gutsy Call's conundrum...how can he throw a punch in the ME and not be mocked as an empty, shallow punk that is all hat and no cattle. Deputy spokesman Josh Earnest says: "What weÂ’re talking about here is something very discrete and limited. Â… WeÂ’re not talking about regime change here[.]" Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Way to go dumbass; I guess that this is just another manifestation of 'leading from behind'. Maybe one day you will learn to keep your pie hole shut and think about what you're gonna say before you say it, or at least think about the consequences that your words carry. Too bad a lot of good people now have a risk of life and limb to put weight into a lot of empty prattle. From an empty suit.

My heart goes out to you Ed and Gem, I helped care for both my parents and while my Dad was dying, my husband was starting his long terminal illness.  My Mom outlived my husband by a few years.  I have no children, so I did not have that part of the sandwich with which to cope.  When I finally began dating again, my new significant other was diagnosed with cancer of the larynx.  He is all through that, but, it is isolating and exhausting.

Remember to that care for the caregiver is critical!  More than one caregiver has wound up as bad off as the person(s) for whom they labored.  It happened to my Aunt.  She broke her health taking care of my Grandmother--mostly because she would allow no one to help her.

Morning, ‘rons and ‘ronettes.

I just bought a new book, Gloria Swanson – The Ultimate Star, a new biography by Stephen Michael Shearer that is the first full-length biography of “the greatest star of them all” in nearly thirty years.  So I thought IÂ’d tell a little Swanson story:

ItÂ’s funny and not a little bit ironic that Swanson, who, in the 1920s, was the biggest film star in the world, is mainly remembered for one role: that of has-been actress Norma Desmond in the brilliantly dark 1950 masterpiece Sunset Boulevard.  It was a role that Swanson loved and hated in equal amounts, and though it gave her the immortality she always felt her due, it also reduced her to a camp icon, forever having to endure the mockery of a succession of aging divas and swishy drag queens intoning “IÂ’m ready for my close-up, Mr. DeMille.”

But there was one Desmond incarnation that was done with love and respect: that of Carol BurnettÂ’s Nora Desmond.  Swanson, in her own words, hated mediocrity and avoided watching television as a rule.  But when she heard of BurnettÂ’s send-up, she tuned in and became a fan of the quirky comedienne; so much so that she wrote her:

“I sing – ask Sir Laurence Olivier or Alan Jay Lerner.  I dance – ask Chuck Walters.  I do pratfalls – ask Chaplin or Mack Sennett.  I am in California – ask the FBI.”  When BurnettÂ’s husband telephoned to ask if she wanted to appear on The Carol Burnett Show, she smiled, “DonÂ’t be foolish, darling.  Of course I will.  ThatÂ’s why I wrote the letter.”

She taped the show on September 14, 1973, flirting with Lyle Waggoner, dancing to “The New-Fangled Tango” and performing her signature Chaplin impersonation with BurnettÂ’s own Charwoman character.  It would be the last time Swanson would ever do her Chaplin parody.

The show (and various clips) is available on YouTube.  HereÂ’s the beginning:

Hope you all have a wonderful holiday.

Sadly, I doubt that was why TFG wanted to meet him.

Solve is a pretty big word but we could pretty dramatically reduce gasoline consumption in the United States if the EPA would end their excessive regulation of natural gas conversion of existing vehicles.  It costs about $1000 to convert an existing vehicle so that it can run on natural gas or, by flipping a switch, go back to running on gasoline.  If you also pay a few thousand to install a compressor at your house which takes natural gas from the pipe, compresses it and refills your tank, you could drive for about the equivalent of $1.00 a gallon gasoline.  Problem is that the EPA requires every kit and the mechanic who installs it to be EPA certified and the certification adds about $25,000 to the price which is why pretty much nobody does that conversion.  If you get an uncertified conversion, you are subject to a fine of $5000 per day for tampering with the emission controls on your vehicle.  If they merely required you to take the vehicle in for a smog test after the conversion and tested both modes of fuel, they could guarantee that the emissions remain low and a lot of folks would spend their own money to do the conversion.  The result would be to create another market for natural gas and, since the main customers for this type of conversion are drivers of trucks that get terrible mileage, a significant decrease in gasoline consumption.  As gasoline consumption drops so dies the price.  Suddenly people have more disposable income to spend on other stuff and the economy starts looking better.

As much as I hate to admit it, I think that Hillary would have been a less worse POTUS.  Bill would have been puppet master instead of ValJar and we would not have had this constant worsening of racial politics in America.  She would've been just bad enough, that the nation's appetite for historic "Firsts" might've been quenched for a bit.

91 Good Morning Morons

Sorry no news.  But I have this dedicated to OSP.

I got rained on at the dump yesterday despite the sun being out.  But I endeavored to persevere.  I started my trash burn and then I attacked the snake vine that was slowly taking over my yard.  After about 4 yards of hacking my back exploded.

Yellow jackets (not from GA Tech) were having a field day in my shirt.   Of course it had to be in the back where I could not reach them.

My response?  Rolling around on the ground saying ow-ow.  Then I grabbed the bottle of brown which cures all evils and retired to the porch.

92 Problem is that the EPA requires every kit and the mechanic who installs it to be EPA certified and the certification adds about $25,000 to the price which is why pretty much nobody does that conversion. If you get an uncertified conversion, you are subject to a fine of $5000 per day for tampering with the emission controls on your vehicle.  Posted by: Obnoxious A-hole at August 30, 2013 07:33 AM (31Nrp)

Yep, there is a reason that people line up and fight over the fleet vehicles for Oklahoma Natural Gas when they auction them off.  My sister's boss bought a pick-up and even though the interior of the cab was beat to pieces, she was happy.  She took it to a shop that redoes automotive interiors and had the headliner replaced, a new dash put in, and the seats re-upholstered and she was still thousands ahead.

Oh, we are gonna get Hillary.  The way this played out with the escalating racism, she is going to be an easy sell as a "First".  Most people are going to buy the stuff about how us meanies on the Right forced Barky to fall because we are racists.  Most of the public only knows her as a success because her total failure at all her jobs--yes, even FLOTUS, has been carefully managed.  Our only hope is that the truth Benghazi finally sees the light of day.

98 Obnoxious, putting cars on NG would not end the fungibility of world oil bids.
It would have an effect on the price, as it were, of tea in China, but to gain any economic advantage in possessing a rare resource, you have to end easy trade in it. In the current system, if the US builds pipelines until the cows come home, the price paid by Europeans or India or China goes down.

When Doenitz was having his happy time, we managed to build a pipeline from Texas to Ohio in one year. Because the East Coast cities could not be bothered to turn off their lights.  Ergo, the U-boats.

So, in other words, you really don't have any idea about Magic Johnson's post-basketball turn into quite the successful businessman.  Look, I don't care about him one way or the other but there's no point in ignoring that he worked hard to become a successful real estate developer, among other things.  Mock all you like, but the vast majority of his money was earned post-basketball.   I don't blame him at all for wanting to get and play up an in with Obama, given how tied up business is with government now.   It's a smart play.  I do think it's pathetic that there is a near certainty that Obama and his handlers did not take the opportunity to ask someone who knows exactly what the impact of their policies are going to be.

Then again, Magic is rich enough that the impact will probably be awesome for him, what with being able to hoover up as much of that sweet sweet gubmint money as he can.

An elusive one is "The Marines Song," from a 1937 Dick Powell musical -- but Bugs and Daffy sing a bridge that is not there in the original. It turned out to be eerily prophetic, and particularly apropos right now:

109 The small group of Republican senators who had been meeting with the White House on budget matters called it quits on Thursday. They were known as the “Dinner Caucus.” In the end, they got less accomplished than the “Breakfast Club.” Their fate, though, was predictable. The goal they were pursuing – a big, blockbuster, bipartisan, budget deal – had been the goal of many in the past three years, all with similar results. No agreement on taxes. No agreement on spending cuts. Same song, different band.

110 #104  The ones I know are in our hymnal are sometimes surprising.  For example,  Luther's "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" is in there,  although it hasn't been sung since I have been attending our parish.

Off the top of my head,  some others in there are "Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee", "Morning Has Broken," "For All the Saints," and "Amazing Grace."

I am not fond of the folk hymns, being as I was a high church type of Protestant before I converted.  However,  we seem to sing a lot of them because our Monsignor was ordained in the 70's (the era of complete tacky taste in all realms).

I often tell my sister,  herself a convert as well,  that we didn't join the Church for the music.  It is my particular cross to bear most weeks.

I did manage to convince our organist,  a nice guy who was an organ major in college,  to use the organ more and play a solo once in a while.  He is quite gifted and is able to make our electric organ sound like a huge pipe organ.  He said he hadn't wanted to "show off."  I was quite pleased last Sunday when instead of the closing recessional hymn he played an organ toccata.  I think he was surprised so many people stayed to listen and applauded.

You have to admit though, there is something amazing about a rich black man, using his already acquired wealth, to create more wealth, and he's NOT considered a role model for that, but for those days when  he was bouncing a ball (both on a court  and in bedrooms).

The extent to which Magic is worshiped allows him to NOT be condemned by the left  in the same manner they condemn people like, say, Mitt Romney, for essentially doing the same things.

You're welcome.  I fell in love with Swanson and old Hollywood the first time I watched Sunset; I think that was the seed that flowered into  my current avocated.  Stroheim didn't like the role of Max; years later he called it "that goddamn butler part," but no one could have been better.  And can you imagine that Wilder wanted Montgomery Clift to play Joe Gillis?

If you can, rent Queen Kelly the notorious Swanson / Stroheim film they made while she was sleeping with Joe Kennedy.  It's flat in a lot of places (and it's unfinished as well; Swanson and Kenney pulled the plug in the middle of filming), but the scene where Seena Owen as the insane Queen Regina takes a bullwhip to Swanson and whips her out of the castle while she herself is naked except for a dressing gown, is incredibly evocative.

And here it is, actually (the real whipping begins around the 2.30 mark):

Reducing US demand for gasoline by a serious amount would have a noticable effect on world oil prices which would make both the Arabs and the Russians sad.

To isolate the US somewhat from the fluctuations of world oil prices, I would recommend a NAFTA oil tax rather than U-Boats.  Since the US imports most of its oil from Canada and Mexico, a treaty among the NAFTA countries to put a $1.00 a barrel tax on oil that is imported from outside of NAFTA would not affect most US oil imports all that much but it would make oil produced within NAFTA $1.00 a barrel less vulnerable to low end price fluctuations.  To generate political support for this tax, allocate it to compensating for the cost of NAFTA citizens in each others countries.  I don't know how much oil Canada imports, but they could use tax revenues to reimburse for the medical costs of Americans in Canada.  Mexico could use it to pay for the cost of US medical students in Guadalahara.  In the US there are plenty of hospitals, schools and prisons that would love to be reimbursed for the cost of Mexican nationals.  In fact, there would probably be a political constituency to raise the NAFTA oil tax to $5.00 a barrel.

J.J., I agree.  Wilder was a great director, though his cynicism does grate on me sometimes.  Did you ever see his The Emperor Waltz?  It stars Bing Crosby as a phonograph salesman in pre-war Austria who is trying to get Franz Josef to buy one and lend his imperial prestige to the thing.  He ends up falling in love with a grand duchess (Joan Fontaine), and eventually all ends up happily ever after.  Wilder was always embarrassed by the film and never liked to talk about it, probably because it was such a sugary confection (he said he originally meant it as a love letter to Vienna, but it went awry somehow).

I like the movie, even though TCM almost never shows it.  It never fails to make me cry, but I'm a softie for that sort of happy-ever-after stuff.

If Constantin had any real guts, he'd have painted the "groomin'" theme featuring Zero with his many groomers, from the old black Commie runaway from Chicago to Honolulu, Alinsky, Bill Ayers. All those dysfunctional authoritarians who can't get it up without being malicious and sadistic, "Because I Could," gang rape the world, one person/nation/region at a time.

148 alexthechick - Team SMOD: "So, in other words, you really don't have any idea about Magic Johnson's post-basketball turn into quite the successful businessman."

I read his site that listed his interests. Some real, some overblown, some resume inflation. He was a historic basketball player and made historic money (deservedly). And that is the source of his success. So much more of his gains are due exclusively because of the name "Magic Johnson and the Lakers". Brand. Brand. Brand. Not business acumen except for an ability to a) not be stupid enough to blow it on foolish things (like so many peers) and b) sell a brand.

Kudos for using everything you have to get ahead but let's not presume to think he's a business Einstein. Were he to sell shoes and shirts called "Joe Bob's Keds" because his name was JB, no one would be interested and he'd be broke. Because he is an NBA legend, his shoes and shirts and Vibe and Soul Train are moved product.

You know who else is a smart, successful business person? Paris Hilton. The widely-diversified genius that is Paris Hilton. Is it unfair to equate the two? Sure. A bit.  Because Magic started from the ground up and made his own bones. But the success is attributable to his skills as an NBA player where the physical trumped the mental. I will grant that he is smart enough to hire the right financial advisors and communications team to keep the brand alive. While they surely lack his jump shot and passing game, I'll bet their little green eyeshades fit better. Obama should've interviewed them, but then that wouldn't have been a nice photo-op.

If, however, a nest is located where problems could arise, such as under a deck or near an often used door, removal is justified. Ground nests of cicada killers and other digger wasps can be destroyed by placing an outdoor use insecticide dust containing carbaryl in and around the nest entrance during the night. The dust particles will adhere to the wasps as they come and go from the nest. Cover the nest opening with a shovelful of soil after all activity has stopped.

Thanks for the clarification.  I have always read it described as a bullwhip.  And frankly, I have no doubt Von would have shown welts and a slashed gown (trust me, Von's a fascinating character), but Swanson would never have let him do it.

Speaking of that Isotta-Fraschini in Sunset - Von didn't know how to drive.  The car had to be towed through the Paramount gates into the lot, but Von was so intent on getting the scene right (and so intimidated by the big machine) that twice he drove the car into the gate!

The Sunset car has been fully restored.  I can't find a current picture of it, but here's a pic of a 1928 I-F that is almost identical:

221 This may not be causal, but most people I know that suffer from migraines spend an inordinate time in front of computer screens. I wonder if a change in lighting and maybe a screen filter could cut down on the occurrence of these migraines.

I have done everything.  Special keyboard, special mouse, special chair, two monitors to reduce eyestrain--you name it, I have done it.  There is a reason that I am never here for the ONT.  I recently added another BP med that has been shown to help reduce frequency of migraines.  I carry a list of allergies to medicines in my purse, my guy carries a copy in his wallet, there are 17 medicines on it--most of them pain meds or migraine meds.

I do love you Oldsailors Poet, and I do appreciate that you care.

A ray of hope...

In the battle for my pond, I started with conventional weapons - fountain and aerators.  Then it escalated to chemical warfare with hundreds of pounds of aluminum sulfate as a flocculant.  I even had to get a paddle boat to distribute it correctly.   That failed miserably.

Yesterday I launched a biological attack with some spheres filled with enzymes and bacteria.  This morning, it appears to have had a positive effect.

Thank god.  The only thing left was nuclear.

MPPP:  Oh, yes, Sabrina.  Thanks for the reminder.  She was recently introduced to  Bogie via The Big Sleep.  Kept asking what was going on and I had to tell  her, too complicated, don't ask, just watch the movie.  I told her the story  about Raymond Chandler not knowing how one character met  his demise, so  if he couldn't figure out his own story, I couldn't either (and  I've seen it countless times).   My dad raised me on the classic movies and  I'm glad my daughter is developing an appreciation for them as well.  I often  share your  stories with her.

Apparantly Slate believes the Obama's and the Clinton's are bad people because they chose private schools for their little darlings.

Additionally, Obama is willing to pursue unilateral action against a tyrannical regime willing to kill its own citizens, in direct contravention of everything he said about his predecessor.

Also, is there any discussion in the media - any at all - regarding HOW Assad came to be in possession of chemical weapons?

What kind of monitor? And have you had someone optimize refresh rate? (That's done by setting the video card/driver software.) Do you receive a lot of glare from windows or overhead lighting?

In our labs, I used to set that because if there was any flickering or glare at all, I could sense it and it would drive me nuts. I'd just feel odd (but no migraines) within a half-hour of desk work. My peers couldn't detect the unoptimized screen until I showed them the different settings. Now flatscreens have fewer problems these days, but contrast/color or text blur could be causing stress.

A few years ago (seems more like decades), we were assured by all the smug prog intelligentsia that Bush lied, there were NO chemical weapons in the ME, nor was any country there even thinking about nuclear weapons! Now we have someone in the ME using "home-made" chemical weapons against his own people so we must ride to the rescue. Sounds like a debacle in the making to me and I expect action on our part after ValJar gets her final directions from Iran.

254 226. Hrothgar, ground hornets (symmetrical holes in the ground aren't all from spiders) mud dobbers haven't stung us. But yes, scorpions, hornets and wasps have stung me. It's the small ones, not digger wasps, and I don't even see them when it happens. Most recently about two months ago when I moved a floral arrangement from my front door, yes know that fire sensation from an irritated little hornet. The intensity of the pain at the immediate sting, swelling, and numbness that moves rapidly from the point of the sting on a finger, through the hand, and up the arm through my blood. Scary. At least with the instant pain, you know you've been stung or bitten, and can take immediate counter measures. Whereas, I've suffered wolf spider bites from yard work when we first bought our home in a new, country development outside of town. You don't even know they're chewing away on your leg unless you SEE the damned spider that finds a good hiding place inside your cuff. At which point, you react.

257 Syria is one of five states that have not signed and seven that have not ratified the Chemical Weapons Convention,[5] which prohibits the development, production, stockpiling, transfer, and use of chemical weapons. However, in 1968, Syria acceded to the 1925 Geneva Protocol for the Prohibition of the Use in War of Asphyxiating, Poisonous or Other Gases. In the aftermath of the 2003 invasion of Iraq Syria denied that it had chemical weapons,[6] but admitted it possessed such weapons in 2012.[7] The Syrian president had earlier alluded to a chemical weapon capability in public statements, in 1990 and 1997.[8] Western non-governmental organizations have stated they believe Syria has an active chemical weapons program.[9][10][11][12] The U.S. has stated that the Syria "has had a chemical warfare program since the mid-1980s", In 1988, a U.S. analyst described Syria's CW capability as more advanced than that of Iraq, however, Israel stated in 1989 that Syria had the "potential for chemical warfare, but not more than that".[8] Syria reportedly manufactures Sarin, Tabun, VX, and mustard gas types of chemical weapons.[13] Independent assessments indicate that Syrian production could be up to a combined total of a few hundred tons of chemical agent per year.[14] (To provide context for this estimate, 190,000 tons were manufactured by World War I participants.[15]) Motivation[edit source | editbeta] A number of reasons have been postulated for Syria's adoption of a chemical weapon strategy in the 1980s:[8] to act as a deterrent to Israeli use of nuclear weapons against Syria to compensate for the loss of Egypt as a military ally after the signing of the Egypt–Israel Peace Treaty in 1979 after recognising the limitations of Syrian air power against Israel in the 1982 Lebanon War, Syria adopted an alternative missile strategy, which required a non high-explosive warhead to compensate for lack of missile accuracy to act as a deterrent to its powerful neighbour Turkey in any possible dispute.

I absolutely agree with your assessment of the movie plot.  The confusion is  quite distracting, but the dialogue is fabulous.  I always wondered if that  story about Chandler was apocryphal.  The worst part about the movie for  me is that I've never cared for Lauren Bacall.  Martha Vickers, who played  her sister, was a far superior actress which was evident even in her limited   role (which was reportedly deliberately cut because she was getting too  many accolades during shooting and  Bacall felt upstaged by her).

I really need to read the book.

It really is very disturbing.  There are people, like Magic Johnson, who can, apparently, walk and chew gum at the same time, and yet they seem to sincerely believe that Obama will "create jobs."  Not just athletes, either.  People with diplomas and newspaper subscriptions and stuff.  They believe the lies, too.

Obama might as well be selling people on the idea that he's personally building a time machine in the basement of the White House.  Or that he's in training to fly himself to the moon by flapping his arms REALLY FAST.

And people believe he can fix the economy!  A man who has not created so much as a lemonade stand.  He's going to use his super-smarts to figure out how to tinker with an economy of 350 million people, which is really just a part of a global economy of 6-7 billion people, and somehow divine the solution that will fix it all.

I believe that, in the future, the majority of people will have a working understanding of complex systems that far exceeds what most people understand today.  The way that most people today comprehend that life begets life -- biogenesis has largely replaced the medieval concept of spontaneous generation.  Or how helio-centrism has largely replaced geo-centrism.  Or how the germ theory of disease has largely replaced the miasma theory.  Or how chemistry has replaced alchemy.  No one really believes the whole "four humors" any more, right?  Most people get the basic concepts of modern science.

But when it comes to the basic ideas behind complexity (which includes economics), we might as well still be in the Dark Ages.  The idea that the President (especially THIS President) is capable of deciphering the GLOBAL ECONOMY and do just what needs to be done for the betterment of all ...

It's just so stunningly stupid that he might as well be going on TV to tell us how he's using an astrological chart and some crystals to turn lead into gold.

Listening to these idiots is like being dropped into Europe in the year 1300 and watching as the most important, powerful people around are discussing a dinosaur skull that's been dug up from some farmer's field, and they all sincerely believe it's from a dragon.  How do you go about telling them they're wrong?  When they react by saying that you're the crazy person for talking about these "dinosaur" animals?

*tin foil hat*

And to   continue my previous comment,    a chemical weapons attack in Syria would be about the only thing that would get the West involved in this clusterfuck, right?   That or a nuclear strike.     Well it's a helluva lot harder to fake a nuclear strike than a chemical attack   thanks to the radiation the former    would emit, plus we're all pretty sure who does and does not have nuclear capabilities around the world.

So let's say the "rebels" (aka al Qaeda-friendly terrorists) have figured this out.   They know our idiot Preezy and his enablers like Juan McLame are willing to help them out, but they're coming up against significant pushback from other members of     Congress.   So let's say these "rebels" decide to fake a chemical attack,   since conventional bombing and the death of hundred of thousands of Syrians hasn't moved the needle in   terms of eliciting    Western aid.   Doing so would kill two birds with one stone:

A) it would make them look far more sympathetic on the world stage, and

B) It would then be more likely that the US and other Western allies would respond with force.   "Hey, this is great," the Syrian "rebels" think.  "We can get the US to bomb Assad for us, and all it costs us is some   stage makeup and a few bullets to shoot at approaching UN investigators to keep them away    so they can't prove or disprove what happened.  Genius!"

Right?   Yeah it's crazy and     paranoid, but this frigging "administration" has made me doubt      the most straightforward explanations     in every situation, regardless of the actors involved.

*takes off tinfoil hat*

That's why I keep saying: where's the proof it happened?  And where's the proof it was Assad who did it?

But     I'm preaching to the choir, I know.  And it doesn't matter anyway.   Obammy is going to    bumblefuck us into WWIII because he's    a pathological liar and a stunning narcissist   with the intellectual capacity of a walnut.

347 Phinn, dinosaur, dragon /semantic hobgoblins/ With his signature alone, Obama "created" a whole new level of bureaucracy government jobs paid by US taxpayers, ObamaCare, an example of lost wealth and growth of authoritarianism. Throughout his career, Obama "created" more opportunism for the pinstripe corrupt attorney frauds that rape tax funds allocated for civic development projects. Obama "created" the ultimate corrupt abuse in the Unions, for the "talented tenth" top dogs who are eating all the laborers that still pay their dues, but are already waking up, smarting from their open wounds (raided union funds for membership). THAT will be an ugly sight, when US Labor turns on its Union bosses and the POTUS. Meanwhile, our government functions according to a global fascist/communist synthesis of Marxism. And yes, purge the legality that enables kickback union bosses and politicians who forced smaller businesses out of business to promote global enterprise that in turn outsources outside the USA, imports immigrants to replace the US workforce (blue and white collar), all funded by the US taxpayers who get DEBT in return for black hole investments. Nothing positive will come from this meeting because either a) He's just going to hang out with the Pres, b) He'll angle for something favorable to himself/his business interests (like they all do), and anyway c) The President won't take any good advice anyway since he's smarter than anyone else in the room.
